Public Transport Bus Buses run all over the city. All the buses leave from a stop marked as Tržnice in the centre of Karlovy Vary. Karlovy Vary HISTORY

n August 1370, Charles IV, Holy Roman Emperor gave city privileges to Karlovy Vary, the place that subsequently was named after him. According to legend, Charles IV was a keen hunter and one day, while hunting around the Krušné Mountains and the Slavkov Forest, one of his dogs fell into the first of the town’s famous springs. Charles supposedly used water from the afore mentioned spring to successfully treat a leg injury and subsequently convinced himself about the curative power of the waters. Amazed by this, he demanded that a town be built around the miraculous spring. Karlovy Vary’s popularity for being a spa town further increased following publications by doctors such as David Becher and Josef von Löschner. Whilst testing the composition of the town’s waters, Doctor Becher invented a potent herb liqueur which is known today as Becherovka, one of The Czech Republic’s most famous national drinks. This newly found alcoholic beverage combined with the magical powers of the waters resulted in further growth and more and more visits from Europe’s aristocracy some of whom included world-renowned composers such as Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Wagner and Tchaikovsky. By the early 20th century Carlsbad (Karlovy Vary) was the most famous spa town in Europe and

boasted a booming tourism. However, both world wars lowered the attendance figures dramatically. Karlovy Vary did not enjoy that much freedom after the Second World War, as the spa sources were nationalised in 1948, and the clientele was mainly restricted to the citizens of the former Soviet Bloc countries. Western tourists started to come back after the 1989 Velvet Revolution, which led to Czechoslovakia’s independence from the Soviet Union. Since that time the number of tourists has been increasing and there has been a steady increase of Russian business presence in Karlovy Vary.

Im August 1370 gab der böhmische König und römisch-deutsche Kaiser Karl IV. Karlsbad StadtPrivilegien, dem Ort der später nach ihm benannt werden sollte. Der Legende nach war Karl IV ein begeisterter Jäger und eines Tages, während einer Jagd rund um das Erzgebirge und dem Kaiserwald, stürzte einer seiner Hunde in die später erste berühmte Quelle der Stadt. Karl IV. verwendete das Wasser aus der Quelle angeblich zur Behandlung seiner Beinverletzung und in der Folge überzeugte er sich von der heilenden Kraft des Wassers. Davon erstaunt verlangte er, dass eine Stadt rund um die wundertätige Quelle errichtet werden solle. Die Popularität von Karlsbad als Kurort wurde durch Veröffentlichungen von Ärzten wie David Becher und Josef von Löschner weiter gesteigert, hauptsächlich jedoch durch den starken Kräuterlikör mit dem Namen Becherovka, erfunden durch die Familie Becher und heute berühmtestes Nationalgetränk der Tschechischen Republik. The following is a rundown of some of the most popular treatments you can experience at Karlovy Vary and an explanation of how they can be beneficial:

Drinking Cures: Bechers drinking cure: Probably the most famous treatment in Karlovy Vary. Doctor David Becher introduced it in the 16th century as a very effective way to treat the musculoskeletal and digestive system. The dose differs from one to five litres a day and uses combinations of the 13 springs.

Baths:

he healing power of local springs in Karlovy Vary was discovered in the middle ages, long before the city was established. The first reference about mineral water treatment comes from the 14th century when Charles IV healed his injured foot with the water. Currently, 79 springs have been discovered in and around the town, 13 of which are used for internal and external therapies. The majority of these 13 springs can be found on five beautiful colonnades called: Sadova, Mlynska, Trzni, Zamecka and Vridelni. Apart from carbon dioxide, springs also contain traces of radioactive elements which stimulate the regenerative processes.

Bubble Bath: Bathe in spring water at a temperature of 38°C with massaging bubble streams, resulting in skin perfusion and muscle relaxation CO2 Bath: Bathe in spring water at a temperature of 35°C enriched with carbon dioxide, resulting in strengthening of the nervous and immune systems, improvement of blood circulation and muscle relaxation. Dry CO2 Bath: This consists of wrapping the body in a plastic bag which is then filled with CO2, resulting in increased oxygen levels in the blood, vasodilatation and blood circulation improvement Mineral bath: Bathe in spring water enriched with mineral salts, resulting in whole organism regeneration, heart and kidney function stimulation and blood circulation improvement.

Massages: Lymphatic Drainage: Lymphatic nodules and vessel stimulation help flush out toxins, build up the immune system and regenerate skin. Hydropuncture: Massage with streams of mineral water resulting in relaxation, and improved blood circulation.

První zmínka o léčbě pomocí pramenité vody pochází ze 14. století, kdy sám Karel VI. poznal hojivé účinky gejzíru na své poraněné noze. K dnešnímu dni bylo v Kalrových Varech a okolí objeveno 79 pramenů, z nichž 13 je využíváno v lázeňství. Většinu jich můžete ochutnat na pěti krásných kolonádách v centru města: Sadová, Mlýnská, Tržní, Zámecká a Vřídelní. Při degustaci si ale dávejte pozor na teplotu vody, ta se pohybuje mezi 30°C až 72°C. Nejteplejším a nepochybně i nejznámějším pramenem je Vřídlo, jehož voda dosahuje teploty 72°C a tryská do výšky 12 metrů. Nachází se na stejnojmenné Vřídelní kolonádě. Základním kamenem léčby v místních sanatoriích je samozřejmě minerální voda, která je bohatá na CO2 (oxid uhličitý). Množství této látky se u různých pramenů liší v závislosti na teplotě, při které voda vyvěrá ze země. Kromě oxidu uhličitého obsahuje voda také stopové množství radioaktivních prvků, které podporují regenerativní procesy. Níže jsou popsány nejčastější léčebné procedury, keré jsou ve zdejších lázeňských domech ordinovány, a jejich blahodárný efekt.

Glass-making is of course famous throughout the Czech Republic and one of the most admired makers is the Moser Company. In order to be eligible for a VAT refund you must reside outside the country in which you are making your purchases. You are only eligible for a VAT refund if you spend a minimum amount in one store on the same day. Be sure to ask inside the store for details about how much the minimum amount is. The following steps must be followed: Step 1: Ask the shop assistant for a Tax Free refund voucher and complete this form in the store. Step 2: Upon leaving Czech Republic, present your purchased goods, passport, shopping receipt and the tax free form you filled out whilst purchasing your product. Make sure you have this form stamped by Customs. 34

Step 3: Claiming your refund. Ways of claiming your refund vary from company to company, but most tax free companies suggest that you post your stamped form to them and you should subsequently receive a refund direct to your credit card or bank account. There is also the possibility of presenting your stamped form to a tax free company’s cash refund location (normally anywhere in the world) for an instant cash refund. The questions is often asked: what goods are eligible for a tax refund scheme and the simplest way to answer this is by stating that the tax free schemes can be used for any taxable goods that are exported for personal use. Calculating your refund is quite simple. The VAT rate in Czech Republic is 20%, so if a dress is displayed at €100, including VAT, then the VAT amounts to €16.50. (Dress price: €83.5 + 20% VAT = €100.) The refund amount will thus be €16.50, minus a small handling fee.

s most people are probably aware, the vast majority of tourists visit Karlovy Vary for reasons which revolve around health and relaxation, and for a love of the quiet life, so the nightlife scene isn’t quite as vibrant as you would find in most other Czech towns and cities. However, when darkness falls over the spa town, there are a number of hotspots which are both entertaining and enjoyable. A nightlife scene just wouldn’t be the same without the chance to have a flutter and the Pupp Casino Club is highly recommended for those who wish to strike it rich, but more importantly, it is recommended for those who wish to have an enjoyable night out. Those who seek their thrills on the dance-floor don’t have so many options, but the discos which are available in Karlovy Vary tend to be very entertaining. Live music lovers are quite spoilt for choice, as many of the bars, hotels and restaurants offer evenings of jazz, blues, classical music and much more. You can even find open mike nights and jam sessions at certain venues. One of the most modern buildings in the town is the KV Arena, which as well as playing host to the local ice-hockey team, is also the location for various concerts and dance events, so be sure to check their agenda during your stay.

The Famous NIGHTLIFE

hen it comes to alcoholic beverages in The Czech Republic, beer comes first, but there is another drink which ranks high on the Czech list of favourite tipples and that’s the herbal liquor known as ‘Becherovka’, and it is produced right here in Karlovy Vary. Becherovka is flavoured with aniseed, cinnamon, and approximately 32 other herbs and it holds an alcohol content of 38%. It is often used to help indigestion and several former Eastern Bloc countries use it as a remedy for arthritis. It was formerly known as Becherbitter and is often referred to as the ‘14th Spring’ in Karlovy Vary.

Becherovka Drink The father of Becherbitter was Josef Vitus Becher, who in the late 1700s rented a still-house somewhere in the town and started to experiment with alcohol. His son Johann Nepomuk Becher (known as ‘Jan’ in The Czech Republic) took over the business in the early 19th century and from that point onwards the drink began to boom. Becherovka’s mysterious recipe remains a secret. Today there are only two people in the world who know the entire production process. This duo are the only ones allowed to enter the Drogikamr room, where the herbs and spices are prepared. Some of the herbs are imported from abroad, and some of them grow around Karlovy Vary. It is normally drank as an ice-cold shot, but in recent times it has also become popular as a mixed drink and is regularly combined with tonic water.

Významné místo má však na českém řebříčku také bylinný likér jménem Becherovka, který se vyrábí právě zde v Karlových Varech. Za nezaměnitelnou chutí Becherovky se skrývá anýz, skořice, dalších 32 bylin a 38 % alkoholu. Likér je často užíván také pro zlepšení zažívání a v několika státech východního bloku dokonce k léčbě artritidy.
