Diving safety since 1983

DISCOVER DAN

DAN Europe is an international network of divers and experts working together towards a common goal, making diving safer.

We’re an international non-profit medical and research organisation founded in 1983, dedicated to the health and safety of the global dive community. We’ve come a long way since then, and what started out as a group of passionate divers exploring the seas and developing underwater safety has grown into an affiliate diving community trusted by over 400,000 members worldwide. Our mission is simple, we help divers and their families by providing emergency medical assistance, promoting dive safety and conducting vital research. We also offer education, products and services to beginners, experts and all kinds of explorers in between. Our network protects what good divers value most, the ability to explore hidden worlds in safety. Above all, we’re a family of divers assisting one another every step of the way.

WHY IS IT SO IMPORTANT?

WHAT DOES IT COVER?

HOW MUCH IS COVERED?

It’s a hotline fully dedicated to divers, managed by DAN’s medical network, handling over 5,500 emergency calls per year and offering timely assistance in case the unexpected happens.

Sending out a helicopter or speedboat to assist a diver in the middle of nowhere can bear considerable costs. DAN’s reliable service providers make the process quicker and more effective.

Treatment of dive injuries can be very expensive, especially abroad and when specialised care and hyperbaric therapy are required. Reliable insurance coverage is essential.

Divers are travellers, which is why we cover costs deriving from non-diving related injuries and diseases, so that you can enjoy your diving holiday with total peace of mind.

Diving professionals are offered a € 4,000,000 cover for third-party liability. This specific insurance is made for professionals in need of comprehensive protection against another party’s claims, including legal defence.

TRAINING

DAN first aid courses and practical training help prevent dangerous situations and prepare you in case of emergency.

Basic Life Support

Knowing how to behave in a critical situation is of paramount importance. Here is why you should attend a DAN Training course: •

courses are developed by a team of medical and educational specialists

each specialised course teaches a specific area of First Aid

the techniques and skills are varied and designed specifically for each course

courses give the amount of time necessary for the instruction of theory and, especially, practical skills

courses are recognised internationally and adopted by academic bodies, law enforcement agencies, rescue teams and healthcare professionals.

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

Since 1994 we have been conducting various medical and scientific research which we share with International Divers Alert Network (IDAN).

Understanding the many kinds of diving environments and conditions, and how our bodies react to them is important to us. It helps us make diving safer and helps to arm the next generation of divers with the knowledge they will need to safely take our passion to new places and new levels of expertise. Thanks to the dedicated work of our researchers, volunteers and the wider community, our research has become a point of reference for the international medical diving community. Circulating gas bubbles | Identification of best ascent profile | Causes of unexplained diving incidents | PFO and risk of DCI | Asthma and Diving | Diabetes and Diving | Pathophysiology of breath-hold diving | Flying after diving | Rebreather diving physiology.

DIVING SAFETY LABORATORY

One of our most interesting projects is our Diving Safety Laboratory (DSL).

It’s a physical, mobile research laboratory that has all the necessary tools to gather field data for medical and scientific research. Anyone can participate in this research and we offer training at different levels for anyone interested in our volunteer programs.
