CENTRALE TERMOELETTRICA DI PORTO TOLLE
One of the biggest powerplants in Europe, built from 1980 to 1984 and property of ENEL s.p.a., can provide 8% of the national energy demand. It was powered with diesel until 1995, then with the petroleum derivate ‘orimulsion’. The fuel might be soon converted to ‘white carbon’, while a recently proposed nuclear conversion plan was abandoned after the italian referendum against nuclear power. The high chimney is visible from all over the Delta.
SOLAR ENERGY PRODUCTION
In 2100 the old thermo-electric powerplant will have been closed and the enregy demand will be completely satisfied by solar panels located above lagoons, in order to protect water form heating caused by solar irradiation. This will both provide energy for the Delta region and allow better shellfish farming.
