Hi Everybody and welcome to our 6th issue! This issue we celebrate icons and iconic moments. Everyone has an icon; I have many. Icons are people who inspire you in different aspects, whether they are style icons, icons within the fashion industry or not. For instance Steve Jobs inspires me, yet he has nothing to do with my chosen career path whatsoever, but he inspires me to believe in yourself and do what you want to do and just take risks, whilst people like Erin Wasson and Alexandra Spencer inspire me in relation to fashion and style. Icons can be anyone and as you read through this issue you will learn about various icons including mine and Laura’s. Enjoy!

When I think of icons in fashion, I think of those whom have contributed greatly to the fashion industry, or those who serve as positive role models for those aspiring to work in the field. There are many people who have influenced me to dream bigger and to always try new things. The first is my grandmother, who is constantly trying different projects, travelling to new places and living her life to the fullest. Not to mention, she is one of the most elegant and fashionable person I know and she always looks flawless. Carine Roitfeld is one of my most respected icons in the industry. Since her resignment from French Vogue she has kept herself busier than ever with her CR Fashion Book magazine and her role as the international Fashion Director for Harper’s Bazaar. At almost 60 years of age, her career and upcoming endeavors are thriving, and I aspire to be as influential and original with my work one day, as she is.

I think although fashion can be branded as a superficial and shallow industry; there is great room for creativity and passions within it and I encourage everyone who aspires to be the new Anja Rubik in the modelling industry or Carine Roitfeld, in the magazine industry (like myself!) to pursue your dreams, never be afraid of what seems unreachable and find a niche in the industry that hasn’t been filled yet ... and go for it! I hope you enjoy the editorial and cover of this month’s issue. It was such a fun day, and I am very pleased with the results. THE CITY OF LOVE

by Laura Woods

What do you think of when you hear the word Paris? Some may think of food - croissants, Êclairs and baguettes. Not necessarily the healthiest assortment of food, but delicious nevertheless. Others may think of love. From romantic picnics underneath the Eiffel Tower to quiet walks along the Seine, it’s no wonder why Paris is the prime destination for honeymooning couples or those in love with the idea of being in love. >

But for many aspiring fashion designers, stylists and writers the city is asso with fashion. Paris Fashion Week is no doubt one of the most anticipated in the fashion calendar; with a large string of high profile designers prese their collections during this week including Karl Lagerfeld, Phoebe Ph Celine and Isabel Marant. Fashion has also played a crucial role in the cou cultural life and society; with ‘haute couture’ originating from Paris in the and the city home to the headquarters of fashion houses such as Dior, L and Hermes; all labels that are associated with luxurious and tailored piec

A chic persona is no longer purely earned from the clothes one wears, but instead through the actions and words that are spoken. Carry yourself in a proud, but respectable way whilst speaking only the truth and not purely for the purpose of dominating another. Invest in timeless pieces such as a black structured blazer, black skinny jeans and a silk button up top, whilst wearing delicate jewellery primarily sticking to neutral colours. And alas, follow the simple rules of Parisian women whom have carved out a path in determining what it means to be chic. As Coco Chanel has famously stated, ‘Elegance does not consist in putting on a new dress’.

“I try to take a couple of hours every day writing out new ideas for Kalayaan..”

06:00 am

08:00 am

10:00 am

12:00 pm

I usually wake up with my cat above my head, as he waits for me to get up every morning. I start my morning by checking my emails and Instagram before heading straight for coffee - decaf of course! I call stores on the East Coast, as soon as they open so I can talk to the buyers. I spend a few hours making phone calls and emailing line sheets of our collections to various buyers. By that point I have completely forgotten what I need to do for the day and start a new To-Do list. After I have made notes of all the stores that want fragrance samples, I pack up sample packets and mail them off to the stores. Some days I have bloggers who are interested, so I send them a candle along with samples as well. I typically send out between 10-20 sets of fragrance samples to different stores, so it can be a rather lengthy process. I usually take a little break and check on my Instagram. I try to post something every few days to stay in touch with my followers. I love networking and meeting new people, so I find that Instagram is a great way to startup a conversation with someone ... hopefully someone who wants a candle!! If we are in production, I always check with my team to make sure that we are on schedule and that the candles look and smell perfect.

14:00 pm

16:00 pm

18:00 pm

20:00 pm

I try to take a couple of hours every day writing out new ideas for Kalayaan. Whether it is a gift bag for buyers, a new fragrance collection, holiday ideas or any sort of new marketing - anything that will help expand my company. I will typically meet with someone on my team to go over my ideas. I take a little time to check the Kalayaan website. I add the new stores that our collections are in, check the traffic to see if people are checking out the site and find new ways to improve and update the website. I constantly have deliveries coming in so I usually go through all of my boxes for the day and re-organize my office. In my evenings, I like to take a little time to relax. I have 3 cats, one of which is scared of everything. I have now taught her to come to me when I give her a can of food, so I like to take a bit of time to help her become less shy! I also try and visit my parents to catch up on the day with them. I don’t spend much time away from work and I try to get any last minute sample packs put together for the next day. Back to my social media! I learned that a lot of company owners check their social media at night so I like to talk to buyers in the evening when the day has settled. I usually end up making a few new connections to reach out to for the next day.

REMEMBER WHEN..

Alexander McQueen by Carly Morrison

Alexander McQueen is one of the few designers I personally have connected with whilst studying fashion. His work often expressed the distinction of life and death-the complete combination of dark and light. What could be more iconic and distinctive than such subjects? Throughout the last year of his life he was anxious and depressed, which led to him tragically committing suicide on February 11, 2010 following the death of his beloved mother, Joyce. His inspiration for the final collection came from the art of the Dark Ages, trying to find the beauty and light within it. He completely shut himself off from the Internet, something we rely on to keep in touch, but something that can also isolate us from others, ironically.

His research included studies of medieval religious icons; pillars of hope, forces of good and evil, hand loomed jacquard and structured satin-not over lustrous, but enough to look perfected and elegant whilst remaining. 80% of his collection remained unfinished at the time of his death; and the 16 finished outfits were shown in a small collection to 40 people, some fashion editors, others close friends. There’s something truly beautiful about observing the Fall 2010 collection, as we see every statement that echoed throughout his work. Prior to creating his own label, McQueen worked as the chief designer for Givenchy, his ’97 FW collection featuring bold armor, distinct flecks of gold embroidery and flashes of white and gold, capturing the true essence of angels. Years later, under his own namesake label, his S/S 2001 show, Asylum, was a collection alike many of his shows which had a strong theatrical sense during the presentation. The audience was surrounded by mirrors with a naked masked woman breathing through a tube; followed by moths being released in the room as the collection was finishing.

McQueen has been praised for his efforts to inject emotion into his work and his detailed craftsmanship which expresses feelings, stories and a state of mind accurately. His fashion is an art form in itself; and displays the attributes of quality over quantity. His very last collection showcased the immense strength he had not only as a designer, but on a personal level too. He is, without a doubt one of the most talented designers of all time and has left behind a legacy in fashion and art that will be remembered forever.

ANJA RUBIK

BY YAMINA BOUKLEKA

Born on June 11, 1985 in Rzeszow, Poland, Anja and her veterinarian parents fled the country’s communist regime and moved to Greece at the age of three. Throughout her childhood, she and her family moved between France, Canada and South America, during which she benefited from a cosmopolitan education. In 1992, they moved back to Poland after the fall of the Berlin Wall. During a local beauty pageant a French modeling agent discovered her. Whilst she finished her education, she modeled during school vacations. In 2000, Next agency found her auditions for Paris Fashion Week and the young Polish model made her debut on the catwalk during the Fall/Winter 1999 Ready-to-Wear collections at the Akira Isogawa show, followed by Rochas, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, Nina Ricci, and Paco Rabanne. After graduating from the British High School in Paris, Anja moved to New York City to pursue her new career as a model. In 2005, she met Mario Testino who helped raise her profile. From a campaign for Jimmy Choo, shot by the designer himself, to campaigns for Armani, Versace and Chloe. Anja Rubik became a regular fixture on the pages of many fashion magazines. Her Nordic blond hair and fair, angular face propelled the model to stardom; turning the heads of top designers and photographers alike.

She has been featured on the covers of various magazines, including French, Korean, Latin American, Japanese, Spanish, Australian and German Vogue. Plus, Korean and French Numero, Nylon and Elle.

She has also modeled for designers/ brands such as Victoria’s Secret, Givenchy, Chloe, Christian Dior, Hermes, Valentino, Gucci, H&M, GAP, Lanvin, Balmain, Belstaff, Armani, Lacoste, Isabel Marant, DKNY, Barneys New York, Jimmy Choo, Estee Lauder, Roberto Cavalli and Chanel. Her haute couture clients include Valentino, Chanel, Christian Lacroix and Elie Saab and Polish jeweller Apart. In 2006, Anja Rubik became the new face of Estee Lauder and Tommy Hilfiger. The same year she modeled for Vogue Paris for the first time, photographed by Craig McDean for the magazines 2006 September issue. In 2007, Chloe chose her to represent the fashion house’s eponymous perfume alongside Chloe Sevigny and Clemence Poesy in a campaign shot by Inez and Vinoodh. Anja Rubik fully established herself as a top model when she appeared on the cover of Vogue Paris’ June/July 2009 issue, and was shot by Inez and Vinoodh once again for Christian Dior’s New Look fragrance. In the April 2010 issue, Anja Rubik appeared on the cover of Vogue Paris’ beauty supplement. Plus, Anja is the muse of Parisian designer Anthony Vaccarello. Since 2010, she has appeared on Top Model Zostan modelka, the Polish edition of America’s Next Top Model. In her personal life, Anja Rubik married her partner in crime, Serbian model Sasha Knezevic on July 17th 2011 in Majorca, Spain. Peter Dundas, creative director at Emilio Pucci, designed her dress.

Karl Lagerfeld’s Slim down

Alexander McQueen’s Death The entire fashion industry was absolutely shocked to hear the news that Alexander McQueen had tragically ended his own life, having not been able to cope with the death of his mother Joyce, who died just nine days before.

When Karl Lagerfeld debuted his new, thin frame in 2001 he shocked the industry with his 42kg loss, which he lost in just over a year.

Louis Vuitton A/W 2011 Kate Moss smoking isn’t exactly a rarity; but she left front-row goers shocked when she walked the Louis Vuitton A/W 2011 show smoking a cigarette. Trust Kate.

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK MICHAEL KORS MICHAEL KORS HAD FEMININITY IN MIND WHEN DESIGNING HIS SPRING/SUMMER 2014 READY-TO-WEAR LINE. HE DID JUST THAT WITH FLOWING SUMMER DRESSES AND MINI CIRCLE SKIRTS RANGING FROM BLUE LACE TO BLOSSOM PRINTS. BASIC EVERYDAY PIECES HAD A CERTAIN POISE ABOUT THEM, LIKE THE SLOUCHY PANTS THAT CAME IN A KHAKI SHADE, BUT STILL RADIATED ARTISTRY. SCHOOLGIRL ATTIRE WAS GIVEN THE ‘KORS’ TREATMENT THROUGH CAMEL AND DOUBLE FACE COTTON PLEATS. Founders of DALLIANCE, Laura & Jasmine let you in on what were their favourite collections from ss14. LAURA. NEW YORK: Zimmerman

Model of the show: Rose Smith who is impossibly beautiful ... Australia’s Daria Werbowy. Favourite moment: Corseted swimwear integrated perfectly into the collection; amongst party dresses. Vibe: Playful and fresh! Would be good with ... Even more Mania Mania jewellery.

LONDON: Christoper Kane

Model of the show: All the way from Australia, Gabby Dover, Jemma Baines and Catherine McNeill all made appearances. Favourite moment: The final seven looks were reminiscent of a child’s biology textbook complete with playful arrows, flowers and sheer elements. Vibe: The flower motifs and strategically placed petal cut outs exuded a botanical watercolour art work. Would be good with ... a somewhat softer set dressing.

MILAN: Gucci

PARIS: Haider Ackermann

Model of the show: Anja Rubik can wear a potato sack and still look amazing!

Model of the show: Kati Nescher is definitely now one of my favourite models!

Favourite moment: Look 42 ... with the black sheer layering and delicate material, Anja looked like a dark, opulent mermaid. Vibe: Energized Luxuriance Would be good with ... ‘Dissolved Girl’ by Massive Attack

Favourite moment: David Bowie inspired hair. Vibe: Masculine fluidity Would be good with ... even more looks!

JASMINE. NEW YORK: Diesel Black Gold

LONDON: Zoe Jordan

Model of the show: Andreea Diaconu is such a beautiful model; her face sturcture, those brows and that figure. She looked incredible at the Diesel show.

Model of the show: Liu Xu looked great at Zoe Jordan. I’m such a supporter of the Asian models and I’m thrilled to see them storming the runway.

Favourite moment: The metal eyelets and mirrored hardware on garments and accessories; in conjunction with loose fitting boyfriend pants and silk tops.

Favourite moment: The contrast between sheer and leather fab rics played a nice part in the collection, as well as the messy untouched hair that gave the collection more of an urban touch.

Vibe: Ballerina meets biker chick. Would be good with ... Less pink! Sorry, not a huge pink fan

Vibe: Elegant rebels. Would be good with ... More than one slip dress!

MILAN: Roberto Cavalli

Model of the show: Meghan Collison and her elf like features fascinate me everytime. She looks perfect for a role in Lord of the Rings, high fashion and runway. Favourite moment: The bohemian vibe of this whole collection was perfect for me as recently I’m experimenting with more Bohemia styles rather than my usual rocker and edgy look. I particularly loved the v-neck slip dresses; and the detail within this collection was just amazing! Vibe: Bohemian gypsy with a cool edge. Would be good with ... Even more fur!

PARIS: Zadig & Voltaire

Model of the show: There is no questioning that Hana Jirickova is a beautiful model, but at Zadig & Voltaire she looked stunning coming down the runway. Favourite moment: All of it! I would honestly wear most, if not all of this collection! Vibe: This collection has a great festival and rock vibe to it; it would definitely look amazing at Glastonbury ... and in my wardrobe! Would be good with ... More looks and of course, muse of the collection Erin Wasson!

NYFW

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK BY MENNA ELZAIRY

The most important time in fashion has come around, once again: Fashion Month! As always the month kicked off with New York Fashion Week, with some S/S 2014 collections being highly praised by fashion critics and other receiving somewhat disappointing reviews. Starting with Prabal Gurung, his S/S 14 collection resembled Prada and Dior, but unfortunately was nothing new or extravagant. Gurung stated that his collection is a celebration of the elegant women and how ‘she’s becoming an endangered species,’ with his spring muse being the iconic Marilyn Monroe. Structured, modest clothing in whites, pastels and prints was complimented with bright pink lipstick, not a trace of edge or rock and roll present in the collection. Alexander Wang’s collection wasn’t as strong as his previous S/S 2013 collection; and was predominately set around relaxed silhouettes and linen pyjama dressing. The ‘Parental Advisory’ sweater has quickly jumped straight to the top of wish lists’ of hipsters and those seeking that effortless model off duty look.

The sweater will no doubt be a hit with celebrities including Miley Cyrus and Rihanna and will most likely be replicated in chain stores like Zara and Forever 21 in no time. Erin Wasson, Wang’s muse and close friend, closed the show whilst Georgia May Jagger made her Alexander Wang runway debut.

Rodarte gathered a widespread of criticism for their LA street style inspired collection. It included leather fringed skirts and bra tops that were perhaps the furthest thing away from elegance and chic. Nicole Phelps from Style.com believed the collection was reminiscent of something that would appear on the Nasty Gal shopping site.

PHOTOGRAPHS

Perfectly timed for release during New York Fashion Week, the Tyra Banks: Presents 15 exhibition shows the supermodel in a series of untouched photographs taken by Udo Spreitzenbarth. All the images are of Tyra emulating the iconic fashion photography that launched her fellow supermodels into stardom. Tyra’s muse selection, including Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne & Cindy Crawford has caused quite a discussion. Whilst I was pleased to see the absence of clichéd icons, Audrey and Marilyn, I can’t help but think that the most iconic images should be those that shaped modern fashion and pop culture. The Image of Princess Diana attending the Serpentine Gallery benefit in 1994 will go down in LBD history. On a night were Prince Charles was airing a tell-all documentary discussing matters such as his infidelity, Diana was photographed at the event looking confident, sexy and full of life. The next day images of Diana appeared in every tabloid paper and were the ideal rebuttal. Not only is this iconic image a perfect example of how our outfit choices reflect what we want to project. It also represents the power of the LBD and why every woman should have one in her arsenal. Demi Moore’s famous shoot of her naked pregnant body for the cover of Vanity Fair changed the stigma of pregnancy for women. Coming out of

an era where woman were required to hide their bodies under oversized dresses that resembled tents. This image not only inspired others to do the same, from Britney Spears to Claudia Schiffer but inspired the fashion elite to create modern maternity wear. Today there is entire industries dedicated to just that. The images of Madonna wearing those famed Jean Paul Gaultier corsets are, still to this day, extremely memorable. Her Blonde Ambition tour caused such controversy; even the Pope was calling for Christians everywhere to boycott the event. Madonna’s response to the criticism was that “The tour in no way hurts anybody’s sentiments. It’s for open minds and gets them to see sexuality in a different way. Their own and others”. We are lucky to live in a society where conventions are questioned and celebrities continue to push the boundaries for us. But remember change had to start somewhere, and this was evidently one of the beginning moments for accepting those who want to do something different. This image of Jean Shrimpton attending the Melbourne Cup in 1965 with no gloves, hat and a dress that finished above the knee was another moment in fashion history that captured headlines. Whilst I am a fan of preserving some forms of tradition, the photo is extremely iconic in the sense that it simply challenged the expectation of the time and encouraged woman to be more creative with style. In a day and age where risk taking is expected from the fashion industry, it’s nice to reflect where that inspiration came from and celebrate those reasons for such a powerful change.

ROCK CHIC BY SAARA BLOM

There is a particular type of style that never seems to go out of style: the effortlessly and eternally cool rock-chick look. Tousled hair, a sometimes riotous mix of denim, menswear and vintage, all accessorized with a couldn't-give-a-f*** smirk. Rock-chick chic is a look many have tried to emulate since (debatably one of the first of her ilk) the doe-eyed Marianne Faithfull, rolled out of Mick Jagger's bed and into the public consciousness. For more recent examples, think Chrissy Amphlett of 'The Divinyls,' Courtney Love and now, face of Equipment fashion, Alison Mosshart, better known as one half of 'The Kills', who also possesses similar style to the perennially coveted style icon of recent times, uber-supermodel Kate Moss. Other devotees, who like to get their rock-chick on, include second generation singer and model Lou Doillon who is the daughter of Jane Birkin, a popular actress/singer during the 60s and 70s, and the inspiration behind the cult Birkin bag. Models such as Australian Abbey Lee Kershaw and European stunners, Anja Rubik and Freja Beha Erichsen, also favour this style of dressing. Beyond talent and beauty, and a style that transcends whatever happens to be 'on-trend', these women all exude that certain je ne sais quoi. But cutting yourself a fringe and smearing on some eyeliner, realize that what you wear isn't enough to give you that indefinable edge ... like any truly iconic style, you've either got it or you don't.

Walker is a legendary British fashion photographer. Every image that is shot manages to wow the audiences every single time, with his over the top themes and extravagant settings there is no surprise why Tim Walker has become one of the most well-known photographers in history.

Tim Walker began his journey and relationship with Vogue at the age of 25 and now at the age of 43 Tim has had countless editorials and cover with publications such as LOVE Magazine, W and lets not forget all the different Vogue editions from around the world. In addition, Tim has also picked up many awards including ‘Isabella Blow Award for Fashion Creator’ and the ‘Infinity Award’. Tim Walker is unquestionably an amazing photographer, artist, filmer and

{

Walker’s love for photography began in the Conde Nast library (Conde Nast being the people who own Vogue, Glamour and GQ). Tim was working on a project before enrolling at Exeter College of Art where he studied a 3-year course in photography; from one beginners project to now being an award winning photographer is a big step, but if anyone could do it, it’s Tim.

Tim has shot, you begin to realise that the exhibition and book clearly states exactly what he is, a story teller. He may take a different approach to story telling, but he tells stories through imagery; through fashion and through his magical and fascinating approach. He is an icon, a one of a kind and an inspiration to thousands and every time the news comes out that he is shooting something new people anticipate what he is about to show; another extravagant and mind-blowing piece that will most likely go alongside his other images that have become one of the most recognised and iconic images within fashion.

PERSONAL ICONS JASMINE AND LAURA, THE FOUNDERS

AND OWNERS OF DALLIANCE MAGAZINE SHOW YOU THEIR ROLE MODELS IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY. ALEXANDRA SPENCER If you are an avid blog reader like me, it’s fair to say that many fashion blogs can across looking rather similar to each other. Although personal style bloggers may all have different fashion senses; their format and blogging technique is quite repetitive. Alexandra Spencer’s blog 4thandbleeker. com pushes the boundaries of ordinary blogging with her self-produced editorials showcasing her style and favourite clothing items.

ELIN KLING I admire Elin, greatly for her hard work and endless new business ventures she is undergoing. With what started out as a fashion blog where she recorded her daily outfits; quickly lead to her becoming one of the world’s most successful fashion entrepreneurs.

CARINE ROITFELD Anna or Carine? At DALLIANCE, Carine Roitfeld is more our kinda girl! I admire how much she raised the bar of Vogue Paris during her time there; and how she does her own thing whether it may be shocking or controversial. She doesn’t try to fit in within the lines of ‘acceptable’ and includes current events and topical themes within her editorials.

J

CARINE ROITFELD Like Laura said, Carine is our kind of girl. Carine is a huge inspiration to me due to the approach that she takes towards editorials and fashion. Carine is a risk taker, and a good one at that! Pretty much every risk she has taken, whether that is with Vogue Paris or even leaving Vogue Paris they have worked. Carine is an incredible businesswoman; she is someone who inspires me not to be afraid. Plus, she has killer style for someone who is 59!

EMMANUELLE ALT Emmanuelle Alt took over Carine’s role at Editor-In-Chief of Vogue Paris once Carine literally handed the job over to her prior to her departure. Emmanuelle is not only the Editor-In-Chief of Vogue Paris, but also a mum reminding us that even if you have the world greatest and busiest jobs do not leave the ones you love behind.

HEDI SLIMANE Hedi Slimane is like marmite, some love him, and some hate him. Me? I love him. Some people have only heard of him since his collections at Saint Laurent, and admittedly I am one of them. But since looking at the work that he has produced as a photographer and creative director I have quickly fallen in love with his edgy portfolio. There are not many people’s portfolios that I can look through for hours on end, but as I scroll through Hedi’s site I find myself spending an excessive amount of time wishing I had his job and portfolio. Hedi is different; he is a lot darker than most photographers and creative directors, but what makes him great is that he sticks with his style and fully believes in his work.

Looks or Personality?

DALLIANCE journalist Claire Turner looks into this topic as she pays reference to some of the most influential people and characters in fashion Way back in the 1990s, before its cultural revolution, Sex and the City was clearly onto something with their second episode entitled ‘Models and Mortals’. At the end of the episode Carrie, pessimistic about the monotony of attraction towards models, is enlightened by the simple clarity of Mr Big who states “There are so many beautiful women out there … at the end of the day you just want someone who makes you laugh”. Big wasn’t talking about the attraction to a potential lover, but instead he was referring to the need for genuine human emotion; something often reserved from most people’s opinions on models. Models seem to exist only within an unreachable sphere, leaving us with nothing but desire and idolization of their immac-

ulate beauty. However, as many are aware, beauty is fleeting and the modeling industry is thought of as rather superficial. So why is it then that we continue to hold their beauty in such a demanding field of light if they are so separate from us? If so many women are so beautiful why, when it comes down to it, do certain beauties appeal more to us than others, and what is so fundamentally important about a model who can also ‘make us laugh’?

DRESS SHABBILY AND THEY REMEMBER THE DRESS; DRESS IMPECCABLY AND THEY REMEMBER THE WOMAN - COCO CHANEL

The desire of genuine beauty is something so prevalent, so inherently ingrained, and so much that is a part of how we construct ourselves each day is caused by the desire for aesthetic beauty, seen in magazines. Though I think fashion is extraordinary in its own right, a great model will empower the fashion; she breathes life, charisma, and personality into the garment extending its potential into a living work of beauty. A creed I aim to live

by, spoken by the messiah of fashion herself Coco Chanel, explains: Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman. Super models, are pioneers of style with the way they wear the garment, explore the attitude, the mood and also express their humanity. It can be thought of as pumping life into fashion. As frequent fashion consumers, we use fashion to express our individuality and present to the world who we are. A supermodel is no longer one to rely on purely their looks but instead comes with an admirable amount of personality which she can adapt to any garment; like a chameleon.

Day In The Life

The Girls of Wilde Willow

Wilde Willow 6:30AM The team is up feeding kids, choosing outfits and juggling emails to check what has come in overnight and what needs to be managed for the day. 7AM Stella checks social media pages and organises stock for wholesale orders. 7:30AM Breakfast-for Rachelle it is fresh eggs from her chickens, for Stella it is all about managing the production line to feed her two little boys, bird, two cats, dog and three fish and for Kiah it is the craziness of getting out the door to reach daycare for her little boy and get to her day job on time. 8:30AM Kiah and Rachelle hold morning phone meetings to discuss weekly newsletter outlines,

changes to website and social media pages. Changes are passed onto graphic design and website techs. 9AM-12PM Morning mayhem. Stella manages courier pickups for retail stockists and drops offs of new samples and bulk from manufacturers. Stock take is completed and all garments checked for quality control. Packages are wrapped; each in soft tissue and tied with gold printed Wilde Willow ribbon-attention to detail is important! Stella always tries to take a moment in the morning to play with her boys in the sunshine; this is a time when she finds great inspiration for the brand with light and shade, colours, textures and shapes. Rachelle and Kiah juggle their day roles (Rachelle works

in Law Monday to Friday and Kiah owns her own hair product company) whilst coordinating customer invoices, wholesale orders, manufacturer communications, and agent queries across QLD, VIC, SA and TAS. 12-5PM Afternoon chores, email checks and post office duties sit on the list. 5PM The real WILDE WILLOW day begins! The WW girls meet to discuss new samples and any adjustments. New designs are sketched, fabrics considered for new designs and photo shoots coordinated. 6:30PM Dinner dates with partners, kids and pets. Time out to catch up on the day’s events, coor-

dinate bath time and take a breath. 7:45PM-9PM The WW girls all check emails, respond to social media enquiries, and set up emails for the following day. Rachelle wraps orders made online after 4pm and uploads new products and photos to the website for future arrivals. 9-10PM Final emails are between the WW girls. We also browse on social media to see what is trending, research potential fashion agents and review latest colour palettes in the market. 10:15PM This is our time to reflect; to ponder on the fact that every day we are able to do what we love and share our passions with our best friends. Another day

filled with excitement and challenges-seeing the Wilde Willow label grow so organically. Love it!

Nighty night.

Stella’s Typical Day 6AM I’m up by 6:00am (usually) with my 4-and-ahalf-month-old son Phoenix. I feed him and then get straight on to reading through WW emails / orders. 7AM I like to check social media pages and organise stock for any of our wholesale orders whilst spending time with my fiancé before he heads off to work. 7:30AM My 4-year-old son Coby wakes up and I prepare breakfast for us (and our seven animals; a bird, two cats and dog and three fish), I grab a shower with the two boys and get us all ready for the day. 8:30AM Around 8:30 I sort through our wholesale orders and book couriers for delivery to our retail outlets. 9:45-11AM Courier arrives and I receive our new samples and bulk from our manufacturer. Put my youngest down for a nap; enjoy a refreshing juice while I do my regular stock take and quality control. Plus, Rachelle and I will split stock. 11AM My youngest wakes up and I will feed him and then make morning tea for my four-year-old. Then I will take them outside for a play and some sunshine. I am always finding inspiration from our beautiful surroundings for future designs. Light and shade, colours, textures and shapes all catch my eye. 11:30AM I read through new emails and reply to enquires while my youngest is bouncing away on my lap. Although it is demanding for me sometimes, I love that I can have him with me while I am working. 11:45AM Now it’s time to sort through our new orders and carefully wrap each one in soft tissue and tied with gold printed Wilde Willow ribbon. Attention to detail is important! 12:30PM Now I’m ready to post on social media pages and organise lunch for my beautiful boys and me. 1PM Check and organise any new orders that have arrived, wrap them up, then my boys and I go down for my

1st post office run. I also send off orders to our international customers. 2PM I will read and reply to emails whilst having a much needed Chai. Ahhh, a bit of me time. Courier picks up wholesale orders. 2:30PM Set up son’s pencils and paints and start our creative session together. Then, I will sketch/design and brainstorm for future collections. 3:30PM Afternoon tea time for boys and wrap any new orders.

THE MAN BEHIND THE MULTI-BILLION COMPANY

LEVI strauss

BY REBECCA AIEZZA

Levi Strauss didn’t dream of the glitz and glamour that coincides with a life in fashion; rather starting as a humble New Yorker hoping to start up a drygoods business in San Francisco. Upon his arrival to San Francisco, a prospector enquired as to what he was selling. Explaining that he had rough canvas materials ideal for tents and wagon covers, the prospector replied, “You should have brought pants. The miners need ones strong enough to last”. Little did he know that it was this comment that sparked a movement that would revolutionise the entire fashion industry-the invention of the blue jean. The birth of the original 501 Levi jeans was purely out of necessity. This prospector was a tailor and entrepreneur named Jacob Davis. After proposing a joint venture, he bought Strauss’ canvas materials and began to repair the miners torn pants and reinforce the rips with copper rivets. Realising the sturdiness of the material, they began to manufacture the entire garment out of Strauss’ materials; and as of May 20, 1873 the blue jean was born. The reputation of Levi jeans stretched far wider than the American mining community. Levi jeans were actually first featured in Vogue Magazine in 1935, but it wasn’t until the 50s that Levi jeans really stepped onto the fashion scene. Thanks to the Hollywood costume designers of the 50s, movie stars began sporting the iconic 501 jean. James Dean swooned the

hearts of all girls in Rebel Without A Cause, and Marlon Brando showed off a rather perky behind in A Streetcar Named Desire. Their debut in American film made the 501s the supreme statement against conformity; with American youth trying to imitate their movie star idols. This led the jeans to be banned from schools, restaurants, even movie theatres. This only exacerbated the rebellious movement.

The reputation of Levi jeans stretched far wider than the American mining community. Levi jeans were actually first featured in Vogue Magazine in 1935, but it wasn’t until the 50s that Levi jeans really stepped onto the fashion scene. Thanks to the Hollywood costume designers of the 50s, movie stars began sporting the iconic 501 jeans. James Dean swooned the hearts of all girls in Rebel Without A Cause, and Marlon Brando showed off a rather perky behind in A Streetcar Named Desire. Their debut in American film made the 501s the supreme statement against conformity; with American youth trying to imitate their movie star idols. This led the jeans to be banned from schools, restaurants, and even movie theatres. This only exacerbated the rebellious movement. With Time Magazine (date) naming the 501 jeans ‘the fashion item of the twentieth century’, designers could not ignore the rampant growth of the 501s and began slotting the blue bottoms into their collections worldwide. The 70s marked the sexual revolution of denim-highlighting the beautiful curves of women’s bodies rather than hide them away. Calvin Klein completely refigured the stigma attached to denim. Previously symbolising the rugged, brute American miners, Calvin Klein used Brooke Shields to transform denim into a sex symbol.

The controversial imagery and irresistible sex appeal of sneakily exposed flesh burned the Calvin Klein name into the world’s fashion consciousness. This sexualisation of denim saw Calvin Klein rein in massive profits-a mere $12.5 million per week on their blue jeans alone. It can be said that a large part of Calvin Klein’s success is attributed to the original 501 jeans and their influence.

the opening of her boutique SEX. Never before has a retail boutique specialised in skinny jeans and punk scenester attire-bringing the slim fit denim to the masses. But the skinny jean was not in-ground into the wardrobes of women around the world until fashion icon, Kate Moss, was photographed in a tight pair of slim fits. Skinny jeans were the ‘It’ pants.

This sexual revolution continued with the introduction of woman’s best friend: the skinny jean. Continuing the celebration of womanly curves Gloria Vanderbilt created the first stretch denim in 1976. The skinny jean was born.’

The blue jean has transformed throughout the decades: from straight leg to flare, from blue to tartan, from ripped to cuffed, from faded to acid wash and everything in between. However, the denim movement wasn’t confined to the bottom half. Designers began to reform denim fabric to make jackets, vests, skirts, tops, even bags and hats. No one will forget the photograph with Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears in head-to-toe denim.

The skinny jean exploded. However, their popularity in the music industry saw their rise in the men’s fashion industry. The punk subculture of the 1970s popularised the skinny jean and made way for all new denim prints. Bands such as the Ramones, Sex Pistols and The Clash introduced the red tartan jean which continues to pop up in season trends throughout the decades. Skinny jeans had no intention of slowing down; being seen on heavy metal bands in the 80s and on the iconic Michael Jackson and Freddie Mercury in the 90s. It was Vivienne Westwood who brought this punk-inspired look into women’s wardrobes with

Who would have guessed that one single garment, originally made as work wear, could completely evolve the fashion landscape? Levi Strauss’ influence over the fashion industry supersedes fashions elite, including Coco Chanel, Donatella Versace and Christian Dior. Fashion has seen its fair share of styles and fads, but the blue jean has stood the test of time. Its permanency in fashion credits it as the ultimate fashion icon.
