Introduction
It has been a privilege for me to spend more than half of my life at the Music Hall and Dallas Summer Musicals (DSM). My mother brought me to the theatre as a young child to watch performances in the Band Shell, and I started working at the Music Hall at Fair Park while still in high school. Those years add to the memories that flood my mind as Dallas Summer Musicals celebrates its 75th year of bringing the Best of Broadway to Dallas.
As an assistant to legendary DSM General Manager, Charles R. Meeker Jr., I also enjoyed working alongside Tom Hughes who was an assistant as well. Tom had just returned from the Korean War and, together, we were like sponges soaking up all that we could learn from Mr. Meeker. As the years progressed, both Meeker and I would depart to work on the development of Six Flags Over Texas with Angus G. Wynne, Jr., the visionary developer of Great Southwest Corporation. Tom Hughes took over as Managing Director and, some years later, asked me to serve on the Executive Committee. A bit of trivia, but in 75 years, the musicals have been managed by one man and his two assistants.
Tom’s untimely death in 1994 prompted the DSM Board to ask me to take the Managing Director position. The bar had been set high by my two predecessors. However, having come full circle in my career, the opportunity to spend my energies where my heart had always been was too good to pass up. The mission of Dallas Summer Musicals has remained consistent through the years. As the preeminent nonprofit presenter of Broadway theatre in North Texas, DSM produces, presents and promotes excellence in live theatre with year-round performances. In an effort to have first rights on new productions, DSM has also invested time and funds into Broadway shows currently running in London, Germany and New York, as well as shows classified as “works in progress” that we “hide out” in other cities while we work on each aspect of the production before they are presented to an audience. Our goal is to constantly have new works in the pipeline that Dallas may enjoy live theatre of the highest quality without leaving home. Although our audience is diverse in age, the selection of shows is driven by our commitment to bring family entertainment that everyone can enjoy and do so at affordable prices. Thanks to the contributions of dedicated DSM Officers, Board of Directors, Producers Circle, the Guild and Associate Producers members, as well as season sponsors WFAA, American Airlines, Texas Instruments, The Dallas Morning News, and our family of sponsors and patrons, DSM will continue to serve the North Texas community and accomplish our mission. Along with the staff at the Music Hall, I have had the opportunity to work alongside many talented artists – both on stage and behind the scenes. Some of the performers who have made the history of Dallas Summer Musicals brighter have returned to our stage to celebrate with us. In addition to these talented performers who will leave us with new memories, this 75th Anniversary Book commemorates the history of Dallas Summer Musicals from its start as the Opera Under the Stars through the 2015 season. The creation of this book is also meant to be a token of our appreciation for your continued support. Prelude
The history of the Dallas Summer Musicals begins in 1941 with Opera Under the Stars in Fair Park’s Band Shell. It was not altogether a bad idea to be performing out of doors in 1941, if the alternative would have been indoors without the benefit of air-conditioning in the 100-degree-plus temperatures typical of summertime in Dallas. What was important was an audience experiencing the magic of live theatre. Opening night came on June 12, 1941, with a production of Sigmund Romberg’s Blossom Time, an operetta based on the life of Franz Schubert. The first season was co-produced by a group of local Dallas businesses and The Shubert Organization in New York City, producers of touring theatrical productions. Ten shows, running a week each, were planned for the first season, but the season was so successful two additional shows were added. Ticket prices ranged from $.30 to $1.10, and the season ended with a profit, despite the fact that a third of the performances were rained out. The onset of World War II prompted the cancellation of the season in 1942, but the summer theatre resumed operation in 1943 when a group of local businessmen established a nonprofit organization to produce the season, under the name Starlight Operettas. A series of ten shows were presented that year, and another ten in 1944.

A columnist called Charles R. Meeker Jr. “the Ziegfeld of the Southwest.” Michael Jenkins, for whom he was “a true mentor,” characterized Meeker as “a grand impresario and flamboyant figure.” More than any other person, Meeker was responsible for transforming a modest summer series of light operettas into the powerhouse that became the Dallas Summer Musicals. A native of West Virginia, Charlie Meeker came to Dallas in 1932 to attend Southern Methodist University, graduating four years later with a degree in journalism. He immediately entered show business by going to work for the Interstate Theaters organization, which operated vaudeville palaces (by 1936 largely converted to movie theatres) throughout the Southwest. In 1944 the State Fair Association decided the Starlight Operettas needed a full-time executive director, and it tapped Meeker. Meeker quickly began to book more contemporary Broadway musicals, and he made a number of physical changes to the Fair Park Band Shell, including a moving platform system that allowed rapid changes onstage. In 1947, he persuaded Mary Martin to open her national tour of Annie Get Your Gun in Dallas, setting box office records (105,000 people in two weeks). Two years later, he revived Rodgers and Hart’s Pal Joey, with its original Broadway star, Vivienne Segal. Almost written off at its debut in1942, Pal Joey, thanks to Meeker’s production, returned to Broadway the next season and won critical raves.

Meeker oversaw the move into the Music Hall in 1951. The next year he revived Porgy and Bess, with Leontyne Price and William Warfield. Some might have called it risky to stage a show with an all-black cast at a mainstream theatre in the South. But Meeker was a gambler, and in this case his gamble paid off. The production was a sensation. After its premiere in Dallas, Gershwin’s opera went on to a worldwide tour. Throughout the 1950s, Meeker kept the stars marching across the stage of the Music Hall— Debbie Reynolds, José Ferrer, Jack Benny, Gisele MacKenzie, Jeanette MacDonald, Judy Garland, and many, many more. He also brought in major musical directors, such as Franz Allers, who went on to conduct My Fair Lady on Broadway, and top choreographers. As one columnist observed at Meeker’s death, “Meeker knew all of the show business greats. Nobody will quibble with that. It takes one to know one.” Underneath a conservative exterior, Meeker was a born showman. “He didn’t snap his fingers and do time-steps and say Hiya baby, in public,” wrote one columnist. “But in the privacy of a musty music hall rehearsal, he would doff his banker’s gray pin-stripe suit jacket and show one of his people exactly how Durante did that shuffle, or how Sinatra cocked the fedora, or teach a tenor from Ohio how to phrase a line in a jingle.”

Meeker was also something of a juggler. While managing the State Fair Musicals, he also staged such affairs as the Cotton Festival in San Angelo and was entertainment director of the Statler-Hilton’s Empire Room in downtown Dallas. He resigned his post with the State Fair in 1961 to produce shows at the new Six Flags Over Texas. He also produced the annual Miss Teenage America Pageant, served as public relations consultant to numerous firms, and, near the end of his life, even operated “Charlie’s Place” in the basement of the Fort Worth Sheraton, presenting what one critic called, “the best damn dinner-theatre variety show that most of you never saw in your life.” Meeker died suddenly of a heart attack in a Houston hotel room in April 1976, just shy of his sixty-third birthday. He had just left a rehearsal for a convention show. But he also left a legacy of show business memories with thousands of audience members and a thriving institution in the Dallas Summer Musicals. He also left two disciples, Tom Hughes and Michael Jenkins, who, between them, would carry his legacy into the twenty-first century.

A tall, imposing, bronze figure stands in the lobby of the Music Hall, looking down benignly on passersby. Any vintage Summer Musicals fan can immediately recognize the personality represented in such lifelike fashion. Unveiled in 1996, the statue was created as an affectionate tribute to a man, Tom Hughes, who for more than three decades was considered to be nothing less than “Mr. Summer Musicals.” Although Hughes followed in some giant footsteps when he took over the reins of the musical theatre from Charles Meeker in 1961, and was successfully followed by Michael Jenkins, who has put his own impressive stamp on the theatre series, Tom Hughes left a distinct and enviable legacy behind. During his long tenure at the helm of the Summer Musicals, he became nationally recognized as one of the most astute and successful producers of musical theatre in the country. Above and beyond that distinction, he was also one of the most likable and congenial figures you might ever meet in or outside the world of theatre. Anyone who was in the audience when Hughes mounted the stage at the Music Hall, a trademark walking cane in hand (he had more than 100 in his collection), to comment on the show or offer some behind-the-scenes tidbits, could probably surmise that Hughes relished the role of actor as much as—if not more than—that of producer. But, in self-deprecating fashion, Hughes would confess that he didn’t think he was really a very good actor; his role was as producer of shows and theatre manager.

Or, perhaps, it would be more appropriate to refer to him as an impresario. There was an old-fashioned quality about Hughes. He could have competed with the legendary Flo Ziegfeld, but, with all his formal and distinguished mannerisms and his love of theatrical traditions, Hughes was able to move along with the times and successfully gauge audiences’ reactions and tastes. Surely no one ever loved being involved in the world of theatre more than Hughes. Born in Dallas in 1931, he spent his childhood in Carrollton, played clarinet in the high school marching band, and produced and directed a school play. He majored in speech and drama at North Texas State and did graduate work at Michigan State. He gained some additional theatrical experience staging dramas while stationed in Japan during the Korean War. Leaving the service in 1955, he migrated to New York City seeking work as an actor. It was a fruitless effort but may have been the best thing ever to happen to Hughes, since it prompted him to return to Dallas as Meeker’s assistant; thus, he was in place to take over operations at the Music Hall when Meeker departed to pursue other theatrical ventures. Hughes’s theatrical activities were not limited to the Music Hall and the Summer Musicals. He also managed The Majestic Theatre after it was remodeled as a venue for live theatre; he was involved in various touring theatre series over the years; and, close to his heart, he returned to the University of North Texas campus each spring to perform, as an actor, in a production benefiting the university’s drama department. In an interview several years before his death, Hughes remarked that if he were one day to disappear, everything was in place for the Summer Musicals to continue “just as they are.” Perhaps looking down today from another perspective, he would be happy to see that, although his presence is missed, the Summer Musicals continue to thrive and be an integral part of the community’s theatrical life. Michael Jenkins By Bob Porter
One of Michael Jenkins’ most vivid childhood memories dates to when he was a 10 or 11-yearold youngster growing up in Oak Cliff. “I would ride the streetcar to Fair Park, where I would get on the Ferris Wheel,” he says. “Then, I would ask them to stop when I got to the top so I could look over into the Band Shell and see the performers rehearsing for their next show.” Jenkins was recalling, from across the desk at the Music Hall he has occupied since 1994, the beginnings of his life-long love for musical theatre. It is a love that was also sparked when he was still a youngster by the Broadway show records he listened to at home. During his childhood, the only musical theatre in Dallas was being produced out of doors in the Band Shell—where Jenkins both observed rehearsals from atop the Midway’s Ferris Wheel and, with his mother, always attended the shows when they opened. Ironically, some four decades later, Jenkins leads a dual career life style that, in a sense, combines Fair Park’s Midway with musical theatre—as presented today in the airconditioned comfort of the Music Hall. It is also a dual career that typically involves 80-hour workweeks, and logging more hours in airplanes than, perhaps, American Airlines’ chief pilot.

His interest, Jenkins says, has always been theatre management—despite his mother’s observation that she had never seen a classified newspaper ad seeking a theatre manager. “I never wanted to be a performer myself,” he explains. “My interest has always been backstage.” Jenkins’ first job in the theatre was as usher at the Music Hall (augmented by the chore of painting seats in the Cotton Bowl). Dallas Summer Musicals. Tom Hughes was a fellow usher. When Meeker left that post to join the staff at Six Flags Over Texas, Jenkins followed. “Charlie Meeker was an inspiration and mentor,” says Jenkins. “Other influences that have been important to me were Angus Wynne and Luther Clark at Six Flags, Paul Baker at Baylor University, and Broadway producer David Merrick.” When Meeker and Clark left Six Flags in 1969, Jenkins decided to open his own business— “or rather an office,” he says. His company, LARC (Leisure and Recreation Concepts), began to attract business from all over this country and abroad developing theme parks. But Jenkins continued to have a link with the Dallas Summer Musicals as a season subscriber and board and executive committee member. He also invested in some 120 Broadway shows over the years through LARC.

This put him in the position of being the first person to receive a call to help the Summer Musicals in late 1994, following the death of Tom Hughes. Hughes’s death left the operation on the brink of folding. Jenkins’ interest, he says, when he got the call while in Spain working on a theme park project, was simply to get the Musicals back on firm footing, then leave the operation to others. Instead, he quickly found himself devoted to not one but two full time careers—resulting in a schedule that would floor most individuals and leave them a physical and nervous wreck. Jenkins appears to thrive on the demands, however. Always neatly dressed, with a deceptive calmness of demeanor, he has the ability to juggle numerous demands at once, melding current activities and problems with plans for future seasons and projects.

When he was fourteen, helping out in Charles Meeker’s office, Jenkins saw an advertisement calling for investors in a Broadway show. Intrigued, he worked all summer saving money. By September, he had earned $2,300 of the $5,000 minimum; recognizing his dedication, his mother loaned him the other $2,700. “If the show had been a flop,” he admits today, “my show business career might have ended right then.” But it wasn’t. The show was My Fair Lady, and Michael earned enough royalties to buy his mother a new car. His show business career was launched, and Dallas is the richer for it. In 2008, a top-level group of business and civic leaders, both local and national, were invited to support the leadership team of DSM as advisors and to serve as goodwill ambassadors in the community. The Chairman’s Circle supports one of Dallas’ most beloved arts organizations.
DSM Associate Producers is a dynamic group of young professionals between the ages of 21 and 45. Their mission is to support DSM by cultivating future patrons and leaders of DSM, and to make DSM part of the culture for young professionals in Dallas. The group provides opportunities for social engagement, community involvement, and to learn about the production of musical theatre.

Outreach Programs
Dallas Summer Musicals’ efforts are focused on five interrelated programs that address our community’s needs. These programs are funded in full by contributions. For most children, attending their first live theatre performance is an experience they remember all their lives. Yet for many low-income children in our community, attending a real Broadway production may not be within reach.
Seats For Kids
The Seats For Kids program provides a meaningful arts experience for low-income, at-risk, and special needs children. DSM works with Title I schools and agencies across North Texas to provide free tickets to a performance for student groups and their chaperones. Teachers and Program Directors are also furnished with a StageNotes study guide. The study guide offers suggested topics for classroom discussion, activities that support language arts and writing skills, and ideas to encourage the student to involve parents, friends, and mentors in follow-up discussion. Fortunately, for thousands of Metroplex children, the Seats For Kids program has made a lasting impression on their lives.

Stage Right
Created in partnership with the Dallas Police Department in 2005, the Stage Right program introduces at-risk youth ages 10-15 to arts and cultural events. Stage Right seeks to raise awareness of the arts, increase appreciation for different lifestyles and increase self-esteem. Participants attend a 12-week summer program that follows the “Positive Action� curriculum that seeks to improve society by teaching and promoting the positive actions that lead individuals, families, schools/sites, and communities to success and happiness: feeling good about who you are, what you are doing and how you treat others. Dallas-area teachers, counselors and programs for at-risk youth recommend students for the program as part of their ongoing efforts to keep them from joining gangs, getting involved in drugs and crime, or engaging in other activities that prevent them from being successful in school. Participants are rewarded with a field trip to attend a DSM performance and Q&A with the cast.
DSM Kids Club
The DSM Kids Club is a free club for all children who attend Dallas Summer Musicals. Members receive a passport to keep track of the shows they attend each season and background information about each show. There is also helpful advice on proper theatre etiquette. There are lots of fun opportunities for Kids Club members that include parties, meet and greets and Q&A’s with show cast members, backstage tours and even cool prizes! DSM wants musical theatre to be an enriched and treasured experience for children to carry with them into their teens and adulthood.

DSM Academy of Performing Arts The DSM Academy of Performing Arts was founded in 1999 and operates as an affiliate of the Tom Hughes Foundation, Inc. in five locations in the Dallas area. The Academy is proud of its diverse and ethnic student population. It has granted over 400 needbased scholarships and helps to prepare the amateur and the professional for involvement in the performing arts. The goal of the DSM Academy of Performing Arts is to enrich the artistic lives of our community. Recognizing the positive influence of the arts on the human experience, the Academy strives not only to increase appreciation of the performing arts, but to teach those arts professionally. DSM helps support the Academy’s goal by providing facilities and financial support to accommodate more than 400 students throughout the year.

DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards DSM High School Musical Theatre Awards celebrate, recognize and encourage student achievement and spotlight the importance of musical theatre in arts education. DSM’s High School Musical Theatre Awards are patterned after Broadway’s Tony® Awards and celebrate the power of the arts to significantly improve all areas of education. Awards are given in 15 categories, as well as scholarships, as show business veterans and community leaders and celebrities come together to spotlight the achievements of high school students and their school’s musical theatre programs each year. Winners of the Best Performance by an Actor and Actress will receive an all-expense paid trip for five days to New York City to represent their school in the National High School Musical Theatre Awards (the Jimmy® Awards) for the chance to win prizes and scholarships.

Curtain Call Gala With the community’s support, the Curtain Call Gala has quickly become DSM’s signature annual fundraiser. Each year the Gala is a grand celebration of sights, sounds and festivities—a spectacular evening of dazzling entertainment preceded by an elegant seated dinner and an exceptional live and silent auction. With headline entertainers ranging from singing sensations José Feliciano, Dolly Parton, Michael Bolton and Dionne Warwick to Broadway legends Michael Feinstein, Linda Eder, Mitzi Gaynor, David Cassidy, Cathy Rigby, Ben Vereen, Tom Wopat, Jay Johnson, Sutton Foster and Vivian Reed, the Curtain Call Gala is truly an event not to be missed! Each year funds raised at the Curtain Call Gala allow DSM to honor its promise to introduce children to the magic of artistic expression, nurture the performers of today and tomorrow, and enrich audiences with superb theatrical experiences.
The Curtain Call Gala was created as a way to generate funds to support Dallas Summer Musicals’ mission to bring the Best of Broadway to Dallas and provide for children’s education and outreach programs. In 2005, the DSM Board of Directors put together a dynamic Special Events Committee that provided the vision and leadership to guide and execute the inaugural event. The Gala Committee, under the direction of the DSM Board and staff, orchestrated a blow-out first-year event called “Light My Fire” with featured entertainer José Feliciano. The private and corporate community met the challenge head on. They sponsored tables, donated items, and showed up to realize that raising money for DSM had turned into one of the most fun events of the year.

DSM Guild For over 30 years the DSM Guild has been the premier hospitality and welcoming arm of Dallas Summer Musicals. The group is a 100% volunteer organization which plans and hosts opening night cast parties, organizes and serves weekend buffets, and provides the touring companies with helpful information. In addition, members of the Guild can participate in Q&A sessions with the casts and have the opportunity to enjoy social events that enhances their musical theatre experience. Music Hall Music Hall History
Designed in Spanish Baroque style with Moorish architectural influences, the Music Hall at Fair Park made its grand theatrical debut on October 10, 1925, with the musical premiere of Sigmund Romberg’s, The Student Prince. In 1951 the Music Hall underwent its first major renovation by installing much-needed air conditioning. In 1972 the Music Hall was remodeled again by expanding the lobby areas to create a grand foyer for the ticket office and space for the Crystal Terrace Restaurant. This project also enlarged the backstage area, providing a spacious annex and ample dressing rooms. The final touches included acoustical improvements and the installation of more comfortable seats creating a seating capacity of 3,420. In 1999 a refurbishment of all 3,420 seats was completed, the theatre was re-carpeted, the interior repainted and a permanent gift store, infrared headset station and guest relations center were created. Sound System upgrades started in 2008. Since then the Music Hall has constantly had upgrades to the sound to make a better experience for patrons. Future plans to the Music Hall include lighting upgrades in the lobby, upgrades to the bathrooms, and continuing to upgrade the sound system.
