HISTORY OF THE TEXAS ANNUAL ... For those not familiar with the evoluti on of this exhibition, it is wort h repea ting the following facts . In 1940 the d irectors of the Museum s in H oust on , Sa n Antonio and Da llas organized a painting and sculpture competit ion open to all a rtists of the state. Then the lar ge cities ha d local exhib ition s for their reside nt artists, but the small towns offered no opportun ity and the artist livin g on ran ch or farm had no cha nce to exhib it. First called the T exas Ge nera l, in its second year it was re- named the TexasO klahoma Ge neral beca use one muse um in that state pa rt icipa ted. Th e first two exhib ition s were held in Jan uary, February and March of 1940 a nd 194 1. But the year 1941 was to see an other T exas G eneral in O ctober beca use State Fa ir of Texas Association requested an exhibitio n of Texas art d urin g the Fair. Th e original plan of the three or iginat in g museums was that in alternating order one of them wou ld collect the entries, hold the jud ging, exhibit the sho w an d th en circu late it t? the other two. All three would contr ibute pri zes an d sha re cost. O ther age ncies in Fort Worth, Austin, Beaumo nt a nd Lubboc k have exhibited the show at differen t times. Fort Worth, though not a sponsor, has contr ibuted a prize yearly . T exas Genera l was chosen for the name beca use prints, dra win gs and cera mics were included. By th e time of the elevent h consecut ive competition in the seaso n of 1949-50, these ca tegories were withdrawn since specia l competitions for ea ch ha d come int o existence. That year the exhibit ion was called the Texas Pa intin g a nd Scu lpture Annual. That name has stu ck ever since. T he State Fair re-en tered the scene in 1952 by promisin g a Purchase Prize'F un d of $1,000 yea rly if th e exhibi tion could be fea tu red at DM FA during the fair . Since th en D MFA has orga nized the exhibit ion a nd show n it fi rst with contin ued help from San Anton io a nd H ouston in th e for m of prizes, shared circulation cost and exhibition . T he first of the a nn ua ls in 1940 had seven prizes totaling $350, not incon siderable rew ard then . This year prizes for the 22nd competit ion amounted to $4,050 of which $3,300 is money for six purchases for th e perman en t collections of the sponsor ing museums. Beca use of th e st ead ily increasing n umber of artists subm itti ng to thi s exhib it in past years, it has been necessary to limit th e numb er of entr ies to one per artist. Even so, 465 entries were submitted to the 1960 exhibit by artists in 67 Te xa s town s. The jury accept ed 79 work s.
