Capital PRIDE GUIDE 2019

Page 1

On behalf of the Board of Dakota OutRight, welcome to Capital Pride! Capital Pride 2019 is a celebration of the struggle for equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and all Queer people everywhere. It is a year of milestones in our community, and we’re happy you are here to share in them. This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that marked the beginning of the modern LGBTQ movement. In that New York City alley on that fateful night, our trans progenitors, like Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, said “enough” and stood up for the entire LGBTQ community. 50 years later, we are grateful for their power and their service. For us in North Dakota, that fight continues, and in Bismarck, 2019 marks another milestone: this year, we’re taking our celebration to the steps of our state capitol. Our presence here is a symbol of how far we have come, to be welcome in a space of such public purpose. But it’s also a symbol of our ongoing fight in these same halls of power, where our community’s needs are so often ignored. 50 years ago, they called it “gay liberation.” Today, we call it LGBTQ equality. And 50 years from now, be assured that our community will be as present and welcome within those halls of power as we are now among them. Thank you very much for attending our celebration. Relax, enjoy the entertainment, and have PRIDE in the continuing fight ahead. From all of us in the Dakota OutRight family, Happy Pride!
