For 10 years, Cmdr. Dan Scheuermann of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office worked the streets with Rajah, his narcotics detection dog. The black lab proved an able partner — between 1996 and 2006, Rajah assisted in more than 1,000 search warrants and detected more than $1 million in illegal drugs. Rajah also achieved national champion status in both team and individual drugdetection competitions. “Rajah was a great partner, and working with Rajah was probably the most rewarding experience I’ve had at the sheriff’s office, said Scheuermann. Rajah, who retired from police work in 2006, became a pet in the Scheuermann family’s home until her death in 2011.

when the exhibit finishes its run, presented Kamarainen with a gift as a token of his appreciation — a black lab stuffed animal. “Heroes of Today was the citizens committee’s first exhibit that solicited work from middle schoolage artists. Three submissions were received by the committee after the call for art went out. In addition to Kamarainen’s “Rajah, pieces in the exhibit include “Olympic Hero Inspiration by Matthew Craig and “Reflection of a Hero by Winter Craig. “Heroes of Today will be on display through August at the Wescott Library, and then will be moved to the Heritage Library in Lakeville where it will hang for three months.

The beloved canine received an unexpected tribute recently when 13-yearold Brynn Kamarainen of Eagan submitted a portrait of the police dog to the “Heroes of Today youth art exhibit at the Wescott Library. Kamarainen created the portrait, titled “Rajah, this spring with colored pencils, using a photo of the dog posted on the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office website. She presented the portrait to Scheuermann last week at a ceremony in the Eagan library’s lobby that was attended by Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows and Chief Deputy Tim Leslie, as well as Jean Erickson of the Dakota County Public Art Citizens Advisory Committee, which sponsored the exhibit. Scheuermann, who said he plans to hang the portrait of Rajah in his office

The exhibit, Cultural Perspectives: Bringing Heritage Home, is on display July 10 to Aug. 24 at Ames Center, 12600 Nicollet Ave., Burnsville. The exhibit asks artists to describe cultural traditions or values within our global community. Their artwork visually conveys cultural distinctions in each piece, either conceptually, abstractly, or realistically. They creatively draw attention to a cultural premise, trend, or means of keeping a culture alive. Many entries represent a personal memory or story. The Cultural Perspectives exhibit ties in with the International Festival of Burnsville, which was held July 12.
