USA Ayrshires US Ayrshire Highlights… A Year In Review The last year has been marked by successes as U. S. Ayrshire breeders strive to breed and develop cows that exhibit the desired traits of outstanding production, functional type, longevity and low somatic cell counts. The actual lactation average for the breed increased from 2014 to 2015 by 640 pounds of milk, 16 pounds of butterfat and 19 pounds of protein with an actual breed production average of 17,894M (8,117 kg). The Mature Equivalent (ME) average per cow is 19,191M (8,705 kg). The production winners and Elite Cow Performance Index (CPI) cows show the adaptability of the Ayrshire cow in the variety of climates and management systems used in the U.S. U. S. Sires Bulls on the Active AI list provide breeders with options in their breeding programs to focus on areas for improvement in production, type or health traits with 18 to 20 bulls listed. Anmar Passeli Passion-ET has topped with the list in the past year with PTAs of over 2,000 pounds of milk. A strong group of young sires also provide the opportunity to use the genetics from the top sires and outstanding maternal lines. Elite CPI Cows In the United States, Ayrshire cows are ranked by Cow Performance Index (CPI) three time a year (April, August and December) with the genetic evaluations calculated by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). The CPI formula is based on six traits with the following emphasis: 25% butterfat, 25% type, 6% daughter pregnancy rate (DPR), 5% udder depth and 4% somatic cell. A list of the top cows is published. This VG-88 point Kildare Percy-ET daughter completed a 365day lactation at 3-01 with 25,290M 5.1% 1,286F 3.9% 978P. Gable is also the breeder of the # 8 and # 10 cows. Mackinson Ristourn Paisley, a 93-point Lagace Ristourn daughter owned by Matthew Mackinson of Pontiac, Illinois, ranks as the #5 cow. Paisley’s Special K dam has lactations over 24,000 pounds of milk. Hawksfield Modem Bronara Rose, an EX91 Lagace Modem daughter, ranks as #6. She is owned by Charles Sayles, Perry, Michigan. In her third lactation at 3-11, she produced a lactation of 20,970D 4.0% 842F 3.3% 699P in 305 days. Bronara Rose is the granddaughter of Hawksfield Bronara-ET, EX-94 4E, who is a past recipient of the ABA Living Lifetime Production award and has lifetime production credits of 352,302M 15,073F and 11,824P.
The #7 cow is another Van-De bred cow, Van-De Obliques Cricket Crazy. She is now owned by Lynn Lee and Dave Koss of Epworth, Iowa. One is a Van-De bred cow, Van-De Orkko Firefly Foxfire, EX-90, who is currently owned by Fabian Almedia, Cleburn, Texas. Foxfire is the dam of Ecuafarm Burdette Firefox, a young sire being sampled by Genex/CRI. Another #10 High CPI cow is Donald Gable’s Conebella Percy’s Lavonia, a first lactation VG-83 Percy daughter. Her 88-point dam has two lactations over 20,000 of milk. The third #10 ranking cow is S&M-Ayr Burdette’s Dixie, an EX-90 Burdette daughter with a best lactation of 6-05 305 days 25,040M 4.4% 1,113F 3.2% 801P. Dixie is owned by Mike Zook, Honey Brook, Pennsylvania. Shows Autumn in the United States is the season for colorful leaves, football, bountiful harvests and national Ayrshire shows. Four national shows are held in locations in the eastern, mid-western and southern parts of the country. The 2015 show season could be described as “youthful” as many of the champions were young cows and many of the owners were youth. The influence of Palmyra Tri-Star Burdette-ET was evident as three of the four grand champions were Burdette daughters.
