du Buhari administration in seeing to the success of the West African country, formerly known to be wartorn. President Yemi Osinbajo has revealed that his job as the nation’s Number Two citizen is a very difficult one. Osinbajo said that the job of the President or Vice President was so difficult that one could not do it for a lifetime. The Vice President in a statement on Tuesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Laolu Akande, said this while answering questions from pupils of LEA Government Primary School, Life Camp, Abuja, as part of events marking the 2018 International Book and Copyright Day on Monday. When a pupil asked how Osinbajo creates time for his wife and children despite his tight schedule, the Vice-President said, “We

live in Aguda House, where we see each other practically all the time. “But I must say that it is very difficult because I travel a lot to different parts of the country, and so I am not usually home, I am not usually in Abuja. “That’s one of the reasons there are tenures for the President or Vice President; four years, eight years maximum. “So you can’t do this kind of work for the rest of your life because it’s very difficult.” When asked what his duties are as the Vice President, Osinbajo said he assisted the President in carrying out his big responsibilities. “As the Vice President of Nigeria, I assist the President of Nigeria in carrying out his responsibilities, and those responsibilities are very big indeed.

“The President has responsibility to about 200 million Nigerians and all Nigerians expect him to provide leadership, in some cases amenities. They expect him to be a firm leader, and because we are so many and we are in different places, it’s a very major responsibility. “So I assist him in carrying out those responsibilities. I’m here, for example, talking to you, children in LEA School, as part of my responsibilities of encouraging and working with young people to make young people aspire to achieve great things, so that they also get the chance to be good Nigerians, to be as active and contribute to the country.” Akande made the transcript of the question and answer segment of the event available to journalists.

PDP decries FG’s assault on Ekweremadu, Melaye, Wamakko, Kwakwanso, others Tunde Opalana, Abuja

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has decried what it described as continuous assault and harassment by the Federal Executive against some lawmakers and the institution of the National Assembly, particularly, the Senate. The party was irritated by the arraignment of Senate President Bukola Saraki, Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu and other senators on trumped-up charges as well as attempts to rope in the Deputy Senate President on charges related to treason. Also, it condemned the harassment and arrest of Senator Dino Melaye, Tues-

day for his support for the Senate leadership and his criticisms of the excesses of the executive arm. The party’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan in statement Tuesday, said Nigerians have noted how the leadership of the Senate and elected senators of the Federal Republic are being harassed, arrested, detained and even arraigned on trumped-up charges for holding opinion divergent to that of the executive arm. He said “since the emergence of the current leadership of the Senate outside the preference of the APC and the executive arm, the Senate has been under attack while senators who show support for the leadership are being hounded and harassed by agents of the executive.

“ Currently, Senators Aliyu Wamakko, Rabiu Kwakwanso and Danjuma Goje are all being harassed for holding opinions that do not suit the whims and caprices of the executive. “Only last week, the security architecture in the National Assembly was compromised, paving the way for the invasion of the Senate chambers by strangers who disrupted proceedings, harassed and threatened our lawmakers and forcefully took away the mace. “We know that the unrelenting assault is aimed at silencing strong dissenting voices, emasculate the legislature and prevent it from playing its constitutional duties of checking the excesses and impunity of the executive arm”.
