PRESIDENT’S REPORT Hello Members, We have now returned to quarterly journals for you to peruse what is happening at your Club. I hope you have had the chance to visit our updated dining venues across the Workers Group venues all of which are receiving fantastic reviews. At Workers Blacktown, Jesse is cooking his way into the hearts of our patrons with his culinary delights at our new look Cucina Locale Revolving Restaurant. Make this your choice of restaurant to celebrate that special occasion or just make every visit special.

Rose garden located at Workers Blacktown in front of the car park.

Grange Buffet at Workers Sports is getting plenty of praise with revised menu and fresh new look buffet. The sushi train is a very popular addition. Brett and Nickayla at Westview Restaurant at Workers Hubertus Country Club would love you to call in. This restaurant has a lovely relaxing atmosphere so reserve your table and enjoy your meal. The Board and Management have much to consider over the next few years as we continue to develop our diversification of income streams. This ensures we are not heavily reliant on gaming and allows our Club to grow for future generations. The Board, Management, Staff and members are proud of our Club and as we work together as a team we can achieve our goals. In previous reports I have written about the proposed over 55’s Resort and Aged Care Facility. To achieve this, we need to move our sporting fields to the Walters Road area of the Complex where we intend to build a Sports Centre of Excellence. A presentation was held on Tuesday 15th March 6.30pm in Diamond Showroom to show our members of the intentions of this development and the reaction and feedback was positive. At our AGM on 10th April we will ask members to vote on making the Resort and Aged Care Facility Area non-core so we can expedite building decisions. I would like to thank my Board colleagues for the time and dedication they put into their position as Directors of the Club. It has been a very busy time and will continue to be with meetings and decisions on very important issues relating to the Clubs future development. I know it takes a toll on their family time but I really appreciate your passion and support you give me as President.

New children’s play area.

Being President of our Clubs (Workers Blacktown, Workers Sports and Workers Hubertus Country Club) is a position I am proud and honoured to hold but I can only do this with the support of our members. Thank you for the support you have shown me to date. We are now into stage 2 of the building development at Workers Sports where you will discover a “family friendly atmosphere” including a children’s fun area which will incorporate a “special” water area. We also have the large screen and relaxing atmosphere for you to enjoy. Pizza and Gelato will also be available.

New undercover seated outdoor lounge area. Many of our members have lost family and loved ones over the past twelve months. I offer my condolences and hope you can find comfort in visiting the club and talking to friends. It was the anniversary of the loss of former Club Treasurer Maureen Mackey in February. To honour this special lady, we unveiled a “rose garden” located at Workers Blacktown in front of the car park. When you pass by - take time to reflect on Maureen. Keeping Smiling and be Kind to each other.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Hello Members, 2015 was a notable year for the Blacktown Workers Club Group as we celebrated the Clubs 60th anniversary while 2016 will be a year of diversification and major business development. We envisage that good controls on expenses will occur in 2016 as we consolidate our business in preparation for the development work we are proposing in the future. The Sports Club has in place the latest in state of the art kitchen equipment and air conditioning that will ensure efficient operation, reduced operating expenses and minimal maintenance works required. The building works for the Sports Club outside area commenced in mid-January and are expected to be finished mid-year. These renovations will see an improved larger children’s play area as well as upgraded sound and vision system to allow for the best in sports programs to be televised on the large 170 “LED screen whilst enjoying the upgraded modern outdoor facilities. What about the new bar, gelato and catering facility as well. This will be the go to place to bring the family to. The Board, Management and our builders are continuing to develop the plans for the major diversification project at the Sports Club involving the proposed development of a new sports centre of excellence to be constructed on the current industrial land on Walters Rd and the consideration of an over 55’s seniors style resort living, aged care and childcare facilities on the current sporting fields adjacent to the club on the Reservoir Rd side. We continue to have meetings with our builders, architects and Blacktown Council as we progress with this development proposal. These are exciting times ahead as we work to diversify our business model and ensure the long term success of the Club Group. May I remind all members of the 2016 AGM to be held at Blacktown Workers Club Campbell St Blacktown on Sunday 10 April 2016 commencing at 9.00am in the Diamond Showroom. Only full financial members at the time will be eligible to attend. Doors will open and registration will commence at 8.00am. Again I remind you of our Responsible Service of Alcohol policy under the NSW Liquor Act 2007 and the various signs throughout all of our Clubs indicating the Code of Practice for the supply and service of alcohol. This is the law and our staff are all trained and are required by law to ensure it is enforced. To those members who lost loved ones my condolences.

TREASURER’S REPORT Hello Members, I hope all our members had a good start to the New Year. The Blacktown Workers Club are proud to be major sponsors of charities in the Blacktown area. On the 2 February the Club held the Anita Cobby Inaugural Memorial Charity Dinner and over 700 people attended. Almost $200,000 was raised and this will go towards the building of ‘Grace’s Place’ named after Anita Cobby’s mother. This will be a safe and secure refuge for children and adults. Best of luck for our Sporting Bodies teams as they are getting ready for the winter competitions. Blacktown Workers Baseball Club Women’s team members; Kim McMillan, Lauren Donnellan, Breanna Donnellan, Belinda Hay, Olivia Bannon, Elise Izzard, Mindy Latimer and Maddison Lenard contributed to NSW winning their 3rd straight National Championship. Team members competing in the Men’s National Championships U/18’s also received medals. The inside renovations at Workers Sports is now complete and everything is nice and new. I encourage members to go along and try the great food available at the Club. The only work that remains at Workers Sports is the outdoor family area which will be completed shortly, weather permitting. Best wishes to all for 2016. IN LOVING

MEMORY May Her Light Shine Forever.

30 years and the memory of Anita Cobby lives on. On Tuesday the 2nd of February 2016, exactly 30 years from when 5 men raped and brutally murdered this young nurse, a special dinner was held at the Blacktown Workers Club, the Anita Cobby Inaugural Memorial Charity Dinner. 700 plus people pledged their support on the night to the wishes of the Late Garry and Grace Lynch (Anita’s parents) that one day something good would come from something bad. That wish has become reality with all the proceeds from the charity dinner going towards the building of “Grace’s Place” (named after Anita’s mother, Grace).

(Premier Mike Baird)

The night began well with Simon Bouda as Master of Ceremonies delivering a warm welcome to everyone’s attendance. Introducing first Kay Kelly our Club President. “As Club President it was such an honour to announce the Blacktown Workers Club Group would donate $50,000 on behalf of our Directors, Management, Staff and Members to commence the fundraising on the night.” – Kay Kelly. Following that Blacktown City Council Mayor Stephen Bali promised to donate land for Grace’s Place located in Blacktown. The Honourable Michael Baird MP Premier NSW stated he would have to match the Clubs generous gesture pledging another $50,000 and with extra donations, raffles and auctions another $100,000 was raised on the night. The night was attended by special guests including His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retired) Governor of New South Wales, NSW Deputy Police Commissioner Nick Kaldas APM, Anita’s younger sister Kathryn Szyszka and Homicide Victims’ Support Group Executive director Martha Jabour.

(Workers Club Group Board of Directors)

Just before Kathryn spoke a chilling memorial video was played to the sound of Anita’s favourite song by the Eurythmics – The Miracle Of Love. Kathryn then courageously reminded the attendees on the night how kind, how beautiful and how much of a free spirit Anita was. She wasn’t just a beauty queen, she was a hardworking nurse. “Nursing isn’t for the faint hearted but Anita loved it saying it gave her purpose, all she really wanted was to help people” – Kathryn Szyszka. Martha Jabour said that “Grace’s Place” project would cost $2.8 million and is aiming for completion in September 2018, marking the 25th anniversary of the start of the Homicide Victims’ Support Group. Martha also mentioned that “Grace’s Place” would be the very first Centre in the world that is dedicated to giving those who are directly affected from homicide a safe and secure refuge. “We want the children affected to come back to life” – Martha Jabour. The night was drawn to a close with silent auctions, a raffle and even a comedian /ventriloquist by the name of Darren Carr who ended the night on happy note, leaving everyone with smile on their face. To top that off Simon Bouda then rounded out the night by donating an extra $7000 from his team at Ride For Justice.

(Simon Bouda)

Proceeds from the Anita Cobby Memorial Charity Dinner will help to build Grace’s Place.

Funds continue to rise with donations still coming in for Grace’s Place. Great feedback has come across all mediums, from Channels 9, 7 and ABC doing live coverage on the night with further stories extending to millions of viewers around Australia, social media stories on Facebook and various websites continue to reach hundreds of thousands of people, spreading the word and the memory of Anita Cobby and Grace’s Place. Donations can still be made by calling 1800 191 777 or emailing info@hvsg.org.au On behalf of the Board of Directors, Managers and Staff we would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Gary Raymond and his team, all the detectives that were on the case, all the special guests, to all the sponsors and to everyone who made this night what it was. It was truly a unforgettable night, in loving memory of Anita Cobby.

May her light shine forever.

Grace’s Place will offer a safe and secure refuge with professional counsellors on site supporting those le" behind, especially children, through devastation and grief. The facility will be operated by the Homicide Victims’ Support Group (Aust) Inc. (Artist Impression of Grace’s Place)
