In a perfect world, there are small, medium, large and extra large. But any woman who is buying a swimsuit can tell you that there are a lot more than four sizes. At Hush Intimate Apparel in downtown Brighton, swimwear can be sized to fit more than half the store’s 169 different bra sizes, said store owner Lisa Nelson. The same is true at Sunny J’s in downtown Howell. Staff at both stores will custom fit swimwear just like they fit bras. At Sunny J’s, you will find swimwear sized from 4 to 6 up to size 24 and in cup sizes from A to H. “We’ve got a good variety of color,” said Christyne MacDermaid, a staff member at Hush. “Red, pretty light gray, and florals. And they’re not your

grandmother’s florals; we’ve got all kinds.” The colors this year are bright and bold, and the geometric shapes are sharp and crisp. Swimwear at both stores is geared toward women not only of all sizes, but all ages as well. “Some moms want to make sure their daughters are covered on the beach, too,” said MacDermaid. Both stores carry swimwear all year, but especially at this time of year, when the air is turning warmer and spring break means a beach vacation and thoughts turn to bikinis or at least a tankini. MacDermaid at Hush said the store carries swimwear in a majority of the bra sizes and makes sure everything is covered so nothing falls out at the wrong time or spills out the top of the suit. Some

Smell the wood smoke. Hear the drops of sap fall into the metal pail. Taste the sap coming out of the tree. It’s all part of the multisensory experience that awaits you at Kensington Metropark at Maple’s Sweet Story, the guided tour of Kensingston’s sugarbush. A sugarbush is a grove of maple trees where workers harvest sap to make into maple syrup. Kensington’s sugarbush is adjacent to the farm. Park interpreters and historical reenactors will be on hand through the end of March on Saturdays and Sundays from noon until 3 p.m. The program gives a comprehensive look at what it takes to harvest maple sap and make it into syrup. Park interpreters walk guests through the whole process, from identifying a maple tree to collecting the sap to cooking it down into syrup. Farm Manager Debbie Cavallaro said Kensington’s sugarbush area covers about 3 acres and

More than 1,000 students in Pinckney Community Schools have done their part of the 19th annual Empty Bowls soup dinner fundraiser. Will you? The event will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday in the commons area of Pinckney Community

Students have been preparing by fashioning ceramic bowls that will be distributed at the soup dinner benefit, which raises money for the Livingston County distribution center for Gleaners Community Food Bank. “My favorite thing about Empty Bowls is knowing that when I make one, people are

Kensington shares story of making maple syrup early spring, “when (they) actually see it happening, it’s surprising.” She said the sap runs fastest on days when the swing between daytime and nighttime temperatures is the widest. Each group that goes out with a tour at Kensington will tap a tree and hang a bucket. The sap begins dripping immediately. Taylor-Sluder said, “You want to have it when you tap into the tree you see the liquid; the sawdust looks wet when you pull your drillbit out.” Taylor-Sluder said the sap is only about 2 percent sugar. “It’s barely sweet…I tell people, ‘I hope you’re not surprised it looks like water, because basically it is. It’s not thick and rich and golden brown. It’s not syrup. It has to be boiled down to 66 percent sugar (before it becomes syrup).’ ” Technology for boiling the sap down to sugar has changed over the years. American Indians poured the sap into hollowed logs and dropped hot stones into the sap to heat it to boiling. Colonial settlers used big cauldrons over open flames. More recently, syrup makers heat the sap in condensers in a sugar shack. Kensington has examples of all three methods. The season ends when the maple trees develop buds. The sap changes at that point, and doesn’t taste sweet anymore. Such sap is called “buddy”; Cavallaro uses words like “pungent” and “rancid” to describe the flavor, saying it becomes even more pronounced in the evaporator. “There’s no wondering” when the sap won’t make good syrup anymore, she said.

This is the second year Kensington’s program has officially included an Algonquin winter camp complete with historical re-enactors. In years past, the park set up a wigwam, but there wouldn’t necessarily be anyone there to perform demonstrations or answer questions. The park is not licensed to produce syrup commercially, so workers don’t sell syrup produced from the sap they harvest. However, it does have locally produced syrup on hand for purchase after your tour, priced at $7 for 8 ounces or $10 for 16 ounces. It also has maple cream, maple sap that’s been boiled past the syrup stage and then whipped. Fill up with a pancake breakfast at the farm before or after your tour of the sugarbush. Breakfast, available at the Farmhouse Grille from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., includes three pancakes, sausage and juice or coffee and costs $5. Admission to Maple’s Sweet Story costs $3 for adults, $1 for seniors and $1 for kids 3-12 years old. Children younger than 3 get in free. Reservations are a good idea for large groups. A vehicle permit is required for admission to the park, costing $5 for a daily pass or a $25 for a yearly sticker. Taylor-Sluder said, “Bundle up and come out. A Hartland Township business is looking to generate public interest in a piece of World War II history. Elaine Boria, owner of Finders Keepers Home Decor, a store that opened in November, said an anonymous Hartland Township woman recently brought in the helm of the S.S. Knute Rockne. The S.S. Knute Rockne — named after the legendary University of Notre Dame head football coach — made 10 voyages from May 1943 to June 1944, four of which were through battle, according to official paperwork that accompanied the helm, Boria said. The helm is made of wood and brass and was fashioned in 1941 in Grand Haven, she said. Boria said she has been in contact with the university and may contact some famous alumni to gauge their interest in purchasing the piece of history. “Notre Dame was interested in it, but they have very limited funds in the archive department,” Boria said. The owner, who is remaining anonymous and who previously displayed the helm at a hotel she owned, is asking $9,000. “It has all the paperwork, all the serial numbers. It’s really a quite interesting piece,” Boria

said. “The S.S. Knute Rockne was one of the most successful merchant ships of World War II.” Liberty ships like the S.S. Knute Rockne were produced in mass numbers during World War II, sometimes in a matter of days. The helm, specifically, is the device that steered the ship, much like a steering wheel in a car. Boria said this particular helm was painted by members of the crew during voyages. The helm is one of many unique items at Finders Keepers, Boria said. The store sells a variety of fabrics, headboards, mirrors and furniture as well as numerous other items that fall in other home decor categories. In addition, Boria said, Finders Keepers is making a serious effort to look for consigners. “One thing we are looking for right now is consigners, and we’re having a very good record of turnover for merchandise,” Boria said. Pinckney Restaurant Weeks kicked off Sunday, and for two weeks, local eateries in southern Livingston County will feature excellent deals on their dishes in hopes of attracting extra customers. Participating restaurants in the communities of Pinckney, Lakeland, Hamburg, Hell and Whitmore Lake will feature dining specials for $15 or less — some will feature two dinners for $15 — to give customers an opportunity to discover the variety of food the area has to offer. Many locations will be creating new entrees for the promotion, according to local real estate agent Rick Beaudin, also known as the Pinckney Pirate. He’s helped spearhead the event, networking with customers and promoting it on Facebook. “It’s been the talk around town. Everybody’s all excited,” said Beaudin, noting the idea piggybacks off what other Michigan cities such as Detroit have done to promote their eateries in the past. “It’s been a volunteer effort, but it’s going to pay

off,” Beaudin said. “It’s going to bring in people from the outside.” Participating restaurants include the Dam Site Inn, Pinckney Diner, Pinckney Pub, Peaberry Bean & Beats, Pamora’s Pizza, Village Deli, Zukey Lake Tavern, B-Line Bar, LaVita Bistro, Boogie Woogie BBQ, Marco’s Pizza, Checkerz Pizza, Mimi’s Diner, RJ’s Grill and the Whitmore Lake Tavern. Fowlerville ‘dreamer’ reflects on ‘Biggest Loser’ experience By Amanda Whitesell DAILY PRESS & ARGUS

The self-described Fowlerville “dreamer” who made a name for herself on “The Biggest Loser” this season says “loving yourself” should be No. 1. Cassandra Sturos, 25, one of 20 initial contestants on the “The Biggest Loser,” was voted off the ranch in the week-10 episode of the weight-loss reality show that aired March 6 on NBC. “I feel so protective of any girl with self-doubt,” said Sturos, who was insecure about being overweight while growing up. “It’s that poison — I don’t want any girls to feel that way. “Any girl should –– period — love herself.” Sturos was the last of three Livingston County residents to be voted off the show. Nancy Rajala of Fowlerville, her grandmother, was sent home in the fifth week, and Ben Shuh of Marion Township sacrificed his time on the ranch after the first week, saying he missed his wife and nine kids. Sturos, the oldest of 10 children, said she now enjoys fixing herself healthy meals, such as fish with pico de gallo, and Greek yogurt with strawberries and cinnamon. Prior to the show, she used to make herself a “big breakfast” of chocolate-chip pancakes and potatoes and do a lot of “sitting around.” Instead of “turning to peanut butter cups” after arriving home from the ranch, Sturos said, she took up running. She has since run her first 10K (6.2-mile) run, and has set a goal

of running a half-marathon and marathon one day. “I took out all my aggression in the gym,” she said. Before Sturos left the ranch, she had lost a total of 66 pounds on the show, dropping from a weight of 239 when the season began. To date, Sturos has lost 81 pounds, but she had lost 90 in the show’s “Where Are They Now?” video clip. The video showed her in New York City interviewing for a job with Condé Nast Traveler magazine and hunting for an apartment. She had wanted to move to New York City to pursue a writing career but, prior to the show, didn’t have the confidence and self-esteem to be successful there. Sturos earned a bachelor’s degree in English/writing from Northern Michigan University. “I’m an adventurer, and I want to travel,” she said. “I want to visit other cultures and taste unique foods, and go to Bali and have the world’s best waffles.” Sturos said she doesn’t think she could ever describe in words her experience on the ranch. “It was the best experience of my life — hands down — the most phenomenal journey,” she said. “It was so much more different than I ever thought or dreamt it could be.” Sturos impressed trainer Bob Harper. During the first workout, he told her, “You are the kind of girl that I love.” Contestant Kim Neilsen of Georgia gave her some words of encouragement after the red team’s decision to send Sturos home. “The reason they voted for you is
