The Iowa City City Council consists of seven elected officials who serve on the council outside of their own professions, looking to make informed decisions and better the city.

MAZAHIR SALIH • • • • • • • • • • • •
Mazahir Salih was elected to serve on city council in 2018, serving until 2022, and was elected by the council to serve at-large as Mayor Pro tem from 2020 to 2022. Immigrating from Sudan, Salih is proclaimed to be the first Sudanese woman to hold public office in the U.S. Salih has lived in Iowa City for six years now, with these six years being filled with work and advocacy. Salih has earned degrees and graduated from the University of Sudan for Science and Technology, Kirkwood Community College, and Ashley University. Outside of her council responsibilities, Salih is the co-founder and community organizer for the Center for Worker Justice, as well as an on-call EEG technician at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

BRUCE TEAGUE • • • • • •
Bruce Teague was elected to serve on city council in 2018, serving until 2022. Teague was elected by the council to serve at-large as mayor, from 2020 until 2022. Residing in Iowa City since 1993, Teague has attended school in the area, graduating from both Kirkwood Community College and the University of Iowa. Teague is the Owner and CEO of Caring Hand & More LLC (Home Health & Family Services) in addition to CHARM Homes (Property).
LAURA BERGUS • • • •


Laura Bergus was elected to serve at-large, for a four-year term on the City Council, lasting from 2020 to 2024. Bergus has lived in Iowa City since 1981, attending the University of Iowa for both her undergraduate and graduate degrees. Bergus works as an attorney and mediator at Hayek, Moreland, Smith & Bergus, LLP in Iowa City.

SUSAN MIMS • • • • •
Susan Mims has served on city council for 11 years, currently finishing her third term. Mims serves District B, and was first elected in 2010. From 2012-2015, Mims was elected by the council to take on the role as Mayor Pro Tem, and has since served as a councilor. Mims attended the University of Iowa and has lived in Iowa City since 1977.
JOHN THOMAS • • • • •
John Thomas currently represents District C and has since being elected to city council in 2016. Thomas attended and earned degrees from both the University of California-Berkeley and the University of Michigan. Thomas served as a registered landscape architect while he lived in California. Thomas is now retired and has lived in Iowa City for the past eight years.
PAULINE TAYLOR • • • •
Pauline Taylor is currently serving her second term on city council, representing District A. Taylor was first elected in 2016, and then was elected by the council to serve as Mayor Pro tem from 2018-2020. Taylor earned her degree from the University of Iowa, and is a retired registered nurse, previously working at UIHC. Taylor has lived in Iowa City since 1977.

JANICE WEINER • • • • • • • •
Janice Weiner was elected to serve at-large, for a four-year term on city council, lasting from 2020 to 2024. Weiner grew up in Iowa City, attending K-12 school here, then moved for her academic and professional school, as well as her career, but ended up back in Iowa City in 2015. Weiner attended Princeton University, then later graduated from Stanford Law School. Weiner is a retired U.S. Foreign Service Officer, and spends her time outside of her council responsibilities working with other local services and organizations.
