he burning of the Provo Tabernacle in December 2010 was mourned as the end of an era for the city. One year later, that mourning has transformed as the fire and its fallout are increasingly — and somewhat surprisingly — understood as a pivotal moment in the city’s emerging renaissance. When he saw the fireravaged building, Mayor John Curtis said he felt an overwhelming sense of loss.
