2008” and Tuscumbia Country Club, Wisconsin’s oldest golf course. Charter a fishing trip on Big Green Lake or wait for a snowfall to join the ice shanty villagers on the “hard water”. The Green Lake Conference Center offers breathtaking views of the lake and fall colors from Judson Tower, as does Majestic Balloons, a hot-air balloon ride not to be missed. Or enjoy the natural scenery and varied terrain from one of many bike trails, then freshen up and partake of fresh local food served up at one of Bon Appetit magazine’s “Best Restaurants in America” or an equally appetizing Friday Fish Fry. Green Lake will keep you busy with events and festivals such as the Concerts in the Park all summer, the Green Lake County Fair, Fine Arts Show and Battle of the Bands in August, the Wisconsin State Chili Cook-off and Golden Days Harvest Festival in September, and musical and cultural events at the historic Thrasher Opera House all year long. Be sure to check the calendar of events for all of the details.

Throughout the year, locals and visitors come to Ripon to take part in a myriad of eclectic events. The Friday Night Concert Series at the Village Green is a summertime favorite. Cookie Daze, the first Saturday in August, is a wonderful family festival featuring crafts, games, kid-made rockets and, of course, cookies! During Septemberfest we celebrate the beauty of our fall season with live music, the Watson Street car and motorcycle show, a charity sponsored dog walk, local food vendors, and other fun-filled activities for the whole family to enjoy (don’t miss the fantastic Beechwood Farm corn maze in northern Ripon with hidden trails on 15 acres of corn!). The beloved Dickens of a Christmas weekend kicks off the holidays on the first weekend in December. Start Friday evening off with the warmth of hot cider or hot chocolate, caroling, horse-drawn carriage rides, and snack on roasted chestnuts while viewing living scenes in our downtown storefront windows known as Living Windows (Friday night). Saturday features Breakfast with Santa for the kids, Christmas Shopping throughout our unique stores, an Annual Quilt Show, Enchanted Forest, and a holiday Tour of Homes showcasing some of the distinct properties in our area.

}}} Birdwatching

in Green Lake Country

White River Marsh Wildlife Area

G

reen Lake Country is blessed by its wealth of habitats for birds and wildlife, and many locations have trails and are open to public access. Depending on the time of year, some places will vary considerably in what birdlife might be present, while other sites might provide great opportunities to find birds during any season. The best time of year for birdwatching is spring and summer – especially April through July – when individuals are engaged in territorial displays or breeding activities. Starting relatively close to the lake, there are a number of Green Lake Conservancy sites that provide a good birdwatching experience. One of the best is Sunnyside Conservancy, which is located along Silver Creek Inlet, and contains several lagoons surrounded by two miles of trails. Other conservancy hiking areas include Hammer’s Trail and Winnebago Trail, both of which are located within the Green Lake Conference Center and overlook the lake. Norwegian Bay Conservancy has a long boardwalk that extends through a marsh to the shore of Norwegian Bay. More information about these and other conservancy sites can be found at the website: greenlakeconservancy.org Just a little further from the lake are two very large stateowned properties that can provide wonderful birding opportunities. The White River Wildlife Area (located just north of Princeton and west of Berlin), and the Grand River Wildlife Area (just west of Kingston). Another option is the Snake Creek Wetlands Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad right-of-way between Swamp Road and St. Marie Road. The Mascoutin Valley State Trail is also a walk not to be missed. All of these sites are marked on the maps.

Best reason to move to Green Lake Country?

Great place to raise a family, great schools & parks, great golf courses, centrally located between Madison, Milwaukee, and Green Bay. Only 3 hours to Chicago. (Vickie)
