The Daegu Opera House (headed by Bae Sunju) just released an official poster with intense images, announcing a series of spectacular orchestra performances for the 15th time. This year, the Opera House has 7 different posters. The posters are the image of the festival that the audience first encounters. After taking portrait-oriented photographs, which reflect the characters of each opera work, the Opera House selected images from regional tourist attractions, such as ‘Independence Movement Road’, ‘Dalseong Marsh’, ‘Sincheon’, and combined them to create these posters. As a result, stylish yet strong posters have been created. The theme of the ‘The 15th Daegu International Opera Festival’ is 'OPERA & HUMAN', and will showcase a wide repertoire of classics and creative works. The opening piece is Verdi's <Rigoletto>, which was made by the Daegu

Opera House, followed by Puccini's <Il Trittico> and Verdi's <Aida>, a collaboration of the Daegu Opera House and the Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra. Then <Immortal Love>, an homage to the original opera that premiered in 2009, will be performed. The opening performance of the fifteenth festival is Verdi's tragic opera, <Rigoletto>. The performance is directed by Hendrik Müller, a German director who presented his unique production of ‘Magic Flute’ in 2015, and will be conducted by Julian Kobachev of the Daegu City Symphony Orchestra, who is known could be the next Karayan's. This performance will be the perfect way to begin the festival, featuring, Leo An, a baritone who has performed in the world's major opera theater stages, Baritone Piero Terranova, who has taken many roles at

the European major opera theaters, including La Scala Theater, and many other renowned talented vocalists of the Korean popular vocal scene. The second featured opera is <Il Trittico>, meaning three-sided painting, is a collection of three one-act operas composed by Puccini, inspired by Dante's 'Divina commedia', and suggests diverse and deep insights about death. It is expected to be a fascinating show given that three pieces have rarely been performed at the same time. This performance is in collaboration with the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan, which is one of Asia's leading music organizations. Furthermore, the audience can enjoy three performances with different atmosphere at the same time. The greatest Italian opera composer, Verdiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s masterpiece opera <Aida> will be on stage as the third main opera. Regarded as the grandest of all grand operas, Aida is characterized by creating a beautiful melody between vocals and then orchestra, while featuring magnificent and spectacular stage effects which place greater emphasis on the chorus and ballet. At the festival, this opera sells out months in advance, proving that it is the most beloved opera among residents. The upcoming performance is expected to become a hit under veteran director, Lee Hoesu, who has produced dozens of operas in domestic and Italian stages, with his assistant conductor at from the Minnesota Opera, and top performers who are recognized as "Aida specialists". In 2009, the opera <Won's Mother>, which received a warm applause from the audience on the opera festival stage, was reborn with a new title, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Trumpet creeper, a sky flowerâ&#x20AC;&#x153;. The inspiration for this creative opera attracted worldwide attention. Letters from mummies were unearthed in the Andong area in the 1990s and were approximately 420 years old. The Daegu Opera house ambitiously adapted these letters to suit the stage. This great performance will perfectly combine three crucial elements; a solid story line with dramatic tension; direction by Chung Kapgyun, the best creative opera director in Korea; and beautiful music conducted by Baek Jinhyun, and sung by talented vocalists. -continued on p10-

Bae Sunju, the head of the Daegu Opera House, emphasized that the festival was especially focused on a ‘change’ and ‘leap’ in the program. First of all, the main opera, which used to be performed five times per week, has been reduced to four. The fifth performance slot will highlight the never-before-seen Opera Concertante. The ‘Opera Concertante’ is a concert opera that focuses on the music itself rather than the stage effects or devices. In 2017, the Deutsche Opera Berlin in Germany and the Mörbisch Operetta Festival in Austria are working together on an ‘Opera Concertante’ to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the Daegu International Opera Festival. The main opera and 'Opera Concertante' is scheduled to be on the big stage of the Daegu Opera House, while the ‘Salon Opera Series’ will be performed during the week at different theaters with a capacity ranging from 100 to 400 seats. The main focus of the festival has shifted from a main opera to a variety of works and anincreased number of performances, providing audiences with more performances in different places during the festival. In addition, the festival goers can enjoy a well-prepared concert, with the opening ceremony of a large-scale free outdoor concert, and a ‘Luciano Pavarotti 10th anniversary Concert at the end of the festival, featuring Angela Gheorghiu, the world-class soprano, and Ko Seonghyun, the best baritone in Korea. A series of events for audiences and citizens will continue to be held, including a ‘Backstage

Tour’, a popular event that allows visitors to feel the breath of the stage, and the ‘The 8th Vocal Concours for Amateurs’, which has always been the centre of attention by music lovers in the country. Recently, I read one of the endless articles in the vein of ‘How to overcome the sweltering summers in South Korea.’ And after living in Daegu for a year and a half, I am skeptical about the notion of ‘beating’ the heat. I think it’s best we accept the inevitable misery brought on by the scorching summer months, however, I do believe in lessening said misery through a number of nifty hacks. My favorite hack? To stay indoors in the comfort of an air conditioned room, preferably at a restaurant with inviting decor serving delicious grub and beverages while enjoying the company of good friends. That’s where Hue Blanc comes in.

최근에 ‘한국의 무더운 여름을 극복하는 방법’이라는 내용의 끝 없이 긴 기사 중 하나를 읽어보았다. 대구에 산 지 일년 반, 필자 는 더위를 ‘물리친다’라는 생각에 회의적이다. 모든 것을 태워버 릴 듯한 여름이 가져온 피할 수 없는 고통을 받아들이는 것이 최 선이라고 생각한다. 그러나 그 고통을 다양하게 좋은 방법을 통 해 줄일 수 있다고 생각한다. 필자가 가장 좋아하는 방법을 묻는 다면? 에어컨이 틀어진 방의 안락함 속에서 실내에 있는 것이다. 가급적이면 멋진 인테리어가 있고 좋은 친구와 함께 시간을 보내 는 동안 맛있는 음식과 음료를 내어주는 식당에서 말이다. 바로 휴블랑이 제격이다.

The vibe 분위기 I headed over to the restaurant to try out its new summer menu (and cope with the humidity). Like a true Millennial, I am about an all-encompassing dining experience. The food is obviously the main event, but the details matter. How am I supposed to enjoy my meal if I’m distracted by the questionable color scheme and the uncomfortable chairs? Rest assured, Hue Blanc delivered with its feng shui. The first impressions of the aesthetic hit the mark: big, open and spacious layout; plenty of natural light coming in through the arched windows; beautiful wooden tables; a lovely brick wall making for a rustic, warm feel. To boot, they have a patio perfect for eating al fresco. 에 맞게 되어 있다고 해도 된다. 심미적인 부분에 있어 첫번째 인 상은 적중했다. 크고 넓게 트인 레이아웃에 아치모양의 창문을 통해 들어오는 충분한 자연광과 아름다운 나무 테이블, 소박하고 따스한 분위기를 만들기 위한 예쁜 벽돌벽이 있었다. 이런 분위 기를 더 강조하기 위해 야외 공간에서 식사가 가능한 테라스 공 간도 있다. 간단히 말하자면 내 스타일이다. The food 음식 Although ‘Hue Blanc’ is French for ‘white hue’, the food is Western influenced with nods to Korean flavor profiles. The menu offers an eclectic array of options including steaks, pasta, rice dishes, pizzas, salads and side dishes. The drinks menu has the staples: beer, wine, cocktails and sangria. We opted by ordering a couple staples from their main menu (the turf steak and gambas) and one item from their newly unveiled summer menu (the ribs). -continued on p14-

우리는 감바스부터 먹기 시작했는데 어이가 없을 정도로 맛이 있 었기에 훌륭한 선택이었다. 새우는 완벽하게 조리되었고 마늘향 이 나는 소스는 딱 좋을 정도로 매콤했다. 필자는 혼자 3분의 2나 되는 새우를 먹어치우는 나쁜 친구였다. 하지만 아무리 먹어도 충분하지 않았다! 다음으로 나온 것은 지글거리는 새우와 스테 이크 세트였다. 이 메뉴에는 커다란 새우와 구운 감자, 샐러드, 휴 블랑에서 만든 소스 몇 가지가 함께 나왔다. 육즙 가득한 스테이 크의 가격만큼 값어치를 한다고생각했는데, 스테이크는 2만원도 하지 않았다. 고기는 돌판 위에 올려져서 나왔고 테이블에 와서 도 여전히 익는 중이었다. 고기를 얼마나 익힐 수 있는 지 조절할 수 있는 점이 좋았다. 고기가 익는 냄새는 정말 황홀해서 감바스 를 향한 집중력이 떨어졌다. 미디엄-레어로 고기가 완벽하게 익 었을 때, 마침내 맛을 보았고 그 퀄리티와 식감, 맛에 매우 만족했 다. 데리야끼 소스와 견과류의 맛이 나는 소스에 대해서도 팬이 되어 버렸다. 틀림없이 대구에서 먹어본 최고의 스테이크 중 하 나였다.

휴블랑이라는 말이 프랑스 어로 ‘하얀색’이지만 음식은 한국인의 입맛에 맞게끔 현지화된 서양 스타일에 영향을 받았다. 메뉴에는 스테이크, 파스타, 라이스류, 피자, 샐러드, 사이드 디쉬를 포함하 여 여러가지 종류가 있었다. 음료로는 맥주, 와인, 칵테일, 상그리 아 등 기본적인 메뉴가 있었다. 우리는 메인 메뉴에서 기본적인 음식 몇 가지(스테이크와 감바스)와 베일을 벗은 새로운 여름 메 뉴(립) 중 하나를 골랐다. We started off with the gambas which was an excellent choice because they were ridiculously scrumptious. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and the garlicky sauce had a nice amount of kick. I was a bad friend as I easily ate two thirds of the shrimp on my own. I couldn’t get enough! Next came the sizzling turf steak. This dish was accompanied by a large shrimp, a baked potato, a side salad and a few sauces made in-house. I thought this was well worth the price of the juicy steak, which was under 20,000won. The meat came on a stone plate and was still cooking as it arrived at our table. I liked that we had control over how much we wanted the steak to cook. The smell was so intoxicating that it distracted me from the gambas. With the meat perfectly cooked to mediumrare, I could finally taste it and I was very satisfied with the quality, texture and the flavor. I was also a big fan of one of the sauces that had hints of teriyaki and nutty flavors. This was easily one of the best steaks I’ve had in Daegu. 14

We ended our meal with the succulent ribs platter. And while the previous dishes were excellent choices, we definitely saved the best for last. I couldn’t believe how massive the ribs were and we attacked them as soon as they hit our table. On the first bite, the meat was so tender that it almost fell off the bone. It was heavenly. When I looked up to my friend as she devoured a rib, I joked that it was bigger than her face. I was only slightly exaggerating! The platter could easily be shared between three people as it comes with a generous side of potato wedges, fried shrimp, side salad, coleslaw and rolls. The great thing about the platter is that one can make sandwiches from the assortments. Besides the size, I especially enjoyed the sauce because it was spicy and not overly greasy. While the ribs were the highlight of our meal, be warned that this is a deliciously messy dish. So I recommend a different dish (sigh) while on a date regardless of how tempted you are because these ribs are finger licking good. For your information, the platter is one of the summer menu. 우리는 육즙이 가득한 립 플래터로 식사를 끝냈다. 그리고 이전 에 나온 요리들도 훌륭한 선택이었지만 확실히 최고의 메뉴를 마 지막으로 남겨둔 듯 했다. 립이 얼마나 거대했는지 믿을 수가 없 었고 테이블에 요리가 올라오자지자 마자 먹기 시작했다. 처음 한 입 베어먹었을 때 고기가 정말 부드러워서 뼈에서 거의 떨어 질 뻔 했다. 천상의 맛이었다. 친구가 정신없이 립을 뜯고 있는 동 안 고개를 들어 친구를 보고는 립이 친구의 얼굴보다 크다고 농 담을 했다. 아주 조금 과장을 한 것 뿐이었다! 플래터는 웨지 포 테이토, 새우 튀김, 샐러드, 코울슬로, 롤빵이 함께 나오기 때문에 세 사람이서 충분히 나눠 먹을 수 있다. 플래터의 매우 좋은 점은 나온 음식들로 샌드위치를 만들 수 있다는 것이다. 크기 외에도

Like her restaurant, she’s very warm and inviting and happy to suggest a recommendation. Hue Blanc is located downtown, on the second floor above Julliard. It is directly across from Big Ben and Kiki’s. The operating hours are from 12:00 pm through 11:00 pm Monday through Sunday. They only have break times during weekends, from 3:30 to 5:00 pm. In last month’s issue, we took a look at the Samsung Lions and their history as one of the KBO League’s most successful teams. For this issue, we wanted to take a closer look at the inner-workings of the Daegu Samsung Lions Park in addition to all of the good eats and drink available to visitors. 지난달 기사에서는 삼성라이언즈와 한국야구시리즈의 가장 성 공한 팀 중 하나로써의 삼성에 대한 역사를 살펴보았다. 이번에 는 방문객들이 즐길 수 있는 먹거리 및 마실거리에 대한 모든 것 과 더불어 대구 삼성라이언즈파크의 안에서 일어나는 일을 가까 이에서 보고 싶었다.

Samsung Lions Park

The new 24,000 seat stadium, which opened last year, replaced the 10,000-seat Daegu Citizen Baseball Stadium which was the oldest in the country. Built in 1948 and renovated before the launch of the KBO League in 1981, the old stadium lacked many facilities now seen as essential for a professional baseball team such as clay and natural grass turf, trainer’s rooms, and an indoor practice facility. 지난 해에 문을 오픈한 2만4천석의 새로운 경기장은 1만석을 갖 추고 한국에서 가장 오래된 경기장인 대구시민경기장을 대신하 게 되었다. 1948년에 지어졌으며 1981년에 한국야구시리즈가 시작되기 전에 보수를 했었던 시민경기장은 클레이와 천연잔디 운동장, 트레이너실, 실내연습시설 등 현재 프로 야구팀들에게 필수적이라고 여겨지는 시설이 많이 부족했다.

While the players and coaches undoubtedly appreciate the improved conditions of the new Samsung Lions Park, there are also a great many benefits to baseball fans, eaters, and drinkers. We spoke to the man in charge all things food, beverage, and operations, Kwong Yeon Lee, to get an idea of just how much the new park has to offer. 의심할 바 없이 선수들과 코치들이 새로운 삼성라이온즈파크의 더 나아진 환경을 환영했고, 야구 팬들과 음식과 음료를 즐기는 사람들에게도 혜택이 되었다. 새로운 경기장이 얼마나 많은 것들 을 갖추고 있는 지 알아보기 위해 식음료와 운영에 대한 모든 것 을 담당하고 있는 이광연씨와 이야기를 나누어 보았다. Whereas the “concessions” of the old park were a bunch of little independent stands, booths, and coolers located outside of the park, the new stadium contains 49 concession booths within the stadium from 15 different vendors. And there’s a Burger King! On a game day, the ~150 employees serve up everything from hot dogs, pizza, and fried chicken to more traditional Korean offerings such as ddeokbokki and samgyeopsal. To give us an idea of the unique array of food available at the Samsung Lions Park, Mr. Lee took us on the three-stop “Lions Park Taste Stars” (# 라팍맛스타 on instagram) food tour around the stadium.

이전 경기장의 가게라고 할 수 있는 곳들은 경기장 밖에 독립적 으로 한가득 있던 작은 가판대, 부스, 음료용 쿨러였던 반면에, 새 로운 경기장에는 건물 내에 15개의 브랜드에서 출점한 49개의 가게들이 들어와 있고 버거킹도 있다! 경기일에는 150여명의 직 원들이 핫도그, 피자, 후라이드 치킨부터 떡볶이와 삼겹살 같이 좀 더 한국의 전형적인 간식까지 모든 것을 판매한다. 삼성라이 온즈파크에서 먹어볼 수 있는 특별한 음식에 대해 알려주기 위해 이광연씨가 경기장을 돌아다니며 라팍맛스타(인스타그램 #라팍 맛스타) 중 세 가지를 소개해주는 음식 투어를 해 주셨다. Stop one is “Lions Park Samgyeopsal”, which I am told is the most popular menu item at the park, a generous helping of pork with sides of rice, kimchi, vegetables, and bean paste for ₩18,000. Stop two is “Lions Park Herb Boneless Chicken” which comes with a side of the best potato wedges I have ever had for another ₩18,000. Stop three was the “Grand Slam Set” which was a great mix of spicy ddeokbokki, a couple types of fried dumplings, jeon, and some deep-fried cheese rice-cake all for the price of only ₩12,000 won. If you only pick one of the three stops, I recommend going for number three. -continued on p18-

첫번째 메뉴는 ‘라이온즈 파크 삼겹살’이었는데 경기장에서 가장 인기있는 메뉴로, 1만8천원에 밥, 김치, 채소, 된장을 곁들인넉넉 한 양의 삼겹살이 나오는 메뉴이다. 두번째는 ‘라이온즈 파크 뼈 없는 허브 치킨’인데 이제껏 먹어본 것 중 최고의 웨지포테이토 가 함께 나오는 메뉴로 역시 1만8천원이다. 세번째 메뉴는 ‘만루 홈런세트’인데 매운 떡볶이, 튀긴만두, 전, 치즈가 들어간 떡도그 가 함께 나오며 이 모든 음식이 단돈 1만2천원에 판매되고 있다. 만약 이 중 하나만 뽑아야만 한다면 마지막 메뉴를 추천한다. Of course, no baseball stadium experience is complete without a little beer (for me, anyway). Prices at the old park were lower, but you had to exit the game and the park in order to buy drinks. At the new park, beer is conveniently located at the vast majority of the concession booths. Draft Hite can be purchased nearly everywhere, but there is craft beer available on the first and fourth floors and at D-First Sports Pub located on the ground-level of the stadium. 물론 맥주가 조금이라도 없다면 야구장에서의 경험은 완벽하지 않다(적어도 필자에게는 말이다.) 이전 경기장의 맥주가격이 조 금 더 저렴하지만 맥주를 사기 위해 경기장을 나가야 했다. 새로 운 경기장에서는 편리하게도 대부분의 입점가게에 맥주가 있다. 하이트 생맥주는 거의 모든 곳에서 구매가 가능하지만 1층과 4 층, 경기장의 지하에 있는 D-First 스포츠 펍에서 수제 맥주를 살 수도 있다. D-First Sports Pub, while attached to the stadium, is open every day unlike the rest of the concessions. It’s a huge pub with a surprisingly authentic American sports bar feel. The bar is surrounded by TVs which, on game day, were of

course mainly tuned to the Lions/Giants game. Their food menu includes lots of appetizers like nachos, cheese fries, french fries, and buffalo wings. They also have pan pizzas (all around ₩14,000), hotdogs, etc. In addition to their craft beer, they also have a wine menu. On game day, we tried the sampler (₩12,000) flight of craft Pilsner, Weisen, Dunkel, and IPA. They also offer a Strong Pilsner. All went down without a hitch. D-First 스포츠 펍은 경기장에 들어서있지만 다른 입점가게들과 는 달리 매일 문을 연다. 놀랍게도 미국식 스포츠 바의 분위기를 제대로 갖춘 커다란 펍이다. 바는 TV로 둘러싸여 있는데 경기 당 일에는 물론 라이온스/자이언츠의 게임에 주로 채널을 맞춘다. 메뉴는 나초칩, 치즈감자튀김, 감자튀김, 버팔로 윙과 같이 많은 애피타이저를 포함하고 있고, 팬피자(피자 메뉴 1만4천원선)와 핫도그 등도 있다. 수제맥주 이외에 와인메뉴도 갖추고 있다. 경 기 당일에 필스너, 바이젠, 듄켈, IPA 크래프트로 샘플러 메뉴(1만 2천원)를 마셔봤다. 이 곳에는 스트롱 필스너도 있다. It should be noted that the pub takes reservations and requests, from wedding receptions to the random 3am foreign sporting event. If you’re having a hard time finding a spot to watch your favorite game or match from home, consider giving them a try. They also have a VIP room on the fourth floor for a more baller experience. 펍에서는 예약이나 결혼식 피로연부터 새벽 3시에 열리는 외국 인들의 스포츠 관련 이벤트까지 특별한 요청도 받는다는 것을 알 아두면 좋겠다. 한국 밖에서 열린 경기를 볼 수 있는 장소가 찾기 힘들다면 이 곳을 체크해보길 바란다. 그리고 더 근사한 경험을 위해 4층에 VIP룸도 준비해 놓았다.

Before settling into our seats for the game, we made one last stop at the Samsung Lions Gift Shop. According to Jong Su Kim, manager for the last two years, the gift shop sees over a thousand customers every game day. Jerseys are the most popular item, especially for player Lee Seung Yeop. Jerseys range in price, and a player’s name can be added for an extra ₩20,000. If jerseys aren’t your thing, there are tons of items available from ₩5,000 baseballs to the ₩259,000 luggage carrier that the players use while traveling. 경기를 보려 자리에 앉기 전에, 마지막으로 삼성라이온즈 기념품 샵에 들렀다. 지난 2년 동안 샵의 매니저를 하고 있는 김종수씨 에 따르면 매 경기일마다 천 명이 넘는 손님들이 온다고 한다. 유 니폼이 가장 인기가 있는 품목인데 특히 이승엽 선수의 유니폼이 가장 인기 있다. 유니폼은 가격이 상이한데 추가로 2만원을 내면 선수의 이름을 새길 수 있다. 만약 유니폼에 관심이 없다면 5천원 짜리 야구공에서 선수들이 이동할 때 사용하는 25만8천원짜리 여행용가방까지 다양한 상품들이 준비되어 있다.

Let me introduce you to “Elybaden” in the Shinwalseong area which will make you want to jump right out of your bed, pack everything and go right this instant. I’ll review Elybaden where I stayed all day long. 올해 여름은 웬일인지 그렇게 덥게 느껴지지 않는다. 기분 탓일 까? 무더운 날씨가 도와주지 않으니 워터파크도 해변도 왠지 멀 게만 느껴진다. 사실 물놀이를 갔다 오는 일은 마음처럼 쉽지는 않은데, 완벽한 물놀이를 위해 준비해야 할 것이 너무나도 많기 때문이다. 여벌 옷과 수건, 자외선 차단제, 선글라스, 멋진 수영복 과 그에 걸맞는 몸매까지! 몸은 침대에 누워 있지만 마음만은 이 미 워터파크에 떠 있는 당신을 위한 도심 속 해변이 여기 신월성 에 있다. 필자가 오후부터 밤 늦게까지 온종일 체험해 본 엘리바 덴 신월성점에 대한 생생한 리뷰를 전한다.

You may already be familiar with ‘Elybaden', the public bathhouse in Daegu. Yet, you may not be aware of the fact that it has recently opened its new water park service. The new additions include a spa, sauna, fitness center, and even an infinity pool reminiscent of an indoor minibeach. Now let’s take a closer look into one of the main attractions, the Infinity Pool. Elybaden’s Infinity Pool, located at the top of the building in the middle of the city, reminds you of the famous Marina Bay Sands Hotel swimming pool in Singapore. Looking at the artificial palm trees, tanning zones with sunbeds, outdoor pool, and cost efficient pubs, the Infinity Pool area is so much like a beach that you lose yourself and forget that you are actually on top of a building. Moreover, as it is an outdoor pool designed especially to attract young people; there are even photo zones here and there, where you can take beautiful and atmospheric photos. One of the most charming aspects about the Infinity Pool is that its daytime atmosphere differs greatly from its night time atmosphere. In the daytime, there are people of all ages, young and old, enjoying the pool. At night, the area changes into a romantic lounge with trendy music flowing out of the speakers and colorful lights painting the pool’s surface. Luckily, I visited Elybaden during one of the two days they open until 10 pm, Friday and Saturday, and was able to enjoy this nighttime atmosphere. Looking over my hometown Daegu’s nightscape, with a bottle of beer in hand, was a magical experience. 도심 한가운데 우뚝 서 있는 건물 옥상에 새롭게 개장한 이 곳 인피니티풀은 싱가폴의 명소 마리나베이샌즈 호텔 수영 장을 연상케 한다. 인공 야자수가 있는 태닝존과 썬배드, 야 외풀, 각종 주류를 판매하는 카페테리아를 보고 있노라면 이 곳이 해변인지 건물 옥상인지 헷갈릴 정도다. 또한 젊은이들 을 겨냥한 야외풀답게 곳곳에 멋진 사진을 찍기에 안성맞춤 인 스팟이 존재한다. 인피니티풀의 가장 매력적인 점은 낮과 밤이 명확히 다르다는 것이다. (금요일과 토요일에는 밤 10 시까지 야간개장을 실시해 색다른 풍경을 볼 수 있다.) 낮에 는 다양한 연령대의 손님들이 이곳에서 물놀이를 즐긴다면, 밤에는 트렌디한 음악이 흘러나오고 색색의 조명이 야외풀 을 밝히는 로맨틱한 라운지로 탈바꿈한다. 익숙한 대구의 야 경을 바라보며 마시는 맥주의 맛은 가히 환상적이다. 카페테 리아의 주류와 음식 역시 가성비가 훌륭한 편이다. If you enjoy the panoramic view of the roof, move down to the lower floors and enjoy the spa and relax in the dry sauna area. therapy room, and cave room. If you choose not to sweat and just want to enjoy the atmosphere, you can sit in the lounge area which is a large square and eat baked eggs and enjoy rice drinks. In the middle of the square they even play movies so that families can lie down, relax and enjoy a movie or two. Moreover, on the same floor is a large pool area which can accommodate up to about 200 people. There are mini slides, a bucket zone, and a kids’ zone so that you can avoid the hot summer heat with your children. 엘리바덴에 와서 9층 옥상만 즐기고 간다면 이곳에서 제대로 놀 고 갔다고 할 수 없다. 옥상의 전경을 충분히 즐겼다면 본래 스파 전문 시설이었던 이곳에서 스파를 이용하고 찜질광장에서 쉬어 가도록 하자. 전통 불한증막, 황토방, 360도 파노라마 영상을 활 용한 아이스 미디어방, 복부 찜질을 즐길 수 있는 원적외선 테라 피방, 노곤한 낮잠을 자기에 좋은 토굴방까지. 찜질광장은 말 그 대로 커다란 광장의 모습이다. 광장 한복판에는 가족이 편하게 누워 관람할 수 있는 영화가 상영된다. 같은 층에는 200명을 동 시에 수용 가능한 넓은 공간과 미니슬라이드, 버켓 존, 키즈 존이 마련되어 있는 패밀리풀 역시 준비되어 있어 아이들과 햇빛을 피 하기에 제격이다. Having enjoyed Elybaden myself, I can say for sure that Elybaden is one of the best relaxing retreats in our busy city. Furthermore, Elybaden even allows you to save money through selective payment according to the facility you want to use (instead of having you pay for the entire service). I strongly recommend Elybaden to families that want to enjoy comfortable water activities, couples who want to spend quality time, or friends who want to take memorable pictures together. Gelateria Haltavoca Tasting The Ice-Cream Dream

Three years ago, my friends and I were walking down Anjirang Makchang-street, where we stumbled upon an ice-cream cart where a charming Korean lad, Giho Baek, was selling homemade gelato. After two years of selling gelato from his cart, Giho finally opened his shop in Manchon-dong in January 2016. 3년 전, 친구와 함께 안지랑 막창 골목을 걷고 있었다. 그 곳에서 어느 매력적인 한국 남자, 백기호씨가 직접 만든 젤라또를 팔고 있는 아이스크림 카트와 맞닥뜨리게 되었다. 카트에서 젤라또를 팔기 시작한 지 2년, 기호씨는 드디어 2016년 1월, 만촌동에서 가게를 열었다. Upon completion of his military service, Giho moved to Australia, where he worked at various Italian restaurants in Sydney and Perth. It was there that he discovered his love for making desserts, and especially gelato. Upon his return to Korea in 2014, he decided to pursue this dream. More than three years later, at the age of 27, he can proudly say that his dream is becoming a reality.

기호씨는 군복무를 마치고 나서 호주로 이사를 갔고, 시드니와 퍼스에 있는 다양한 이탈리안 레스토랑에서 일을 했다. 바로 그 곳이 기호씨가 디저트, 특히 젤라또를 만드는 것에 대한 애정을 발견하게 된 곳이었다. 2014년 한국에 돌아와서 그 꿈을 쫓기로 마음을 먹었다. 3년도 더 지나서 27살이 되었을 때 자랑스럽게 그의 꿈이 현실이 되었다고 이야기할 수 있게 되었다. Haltavoca, meaning “Let’s lick” in Korean slang, has both sorbet and gelato options. The sorbet is the perfect way to chill on hot Summer’s day in Daegu. Customers can choose from a wide variety, ranging from Blood Plum to Nectarine, and Lemon Sorbet. Gelato lovers will have their sweet tooth ask for more once they have tasted one of the many creamy options. The most popular gelato is the white rice one. It might sound strange, but the taste will amaze you. The Organic Basil offers a refreshing taste, whilst the Milky Cherry gives you a chance to taste gelato heaven. Customers can even treat themselves to Lotus biscuit gelato.

In addition, the festival has prepared plenty of activities using the natural environment of the Yeongnam Alps and hands-on experiences in addition to showcasing the movies. So you’ve been in Korea for a while now. Maybe you came to raise money to pay off those increasingly expensive college loans or try your hand at living overseas. Whether you’re twenty, thirty, forty, fifty or even sixty-something, or if you’ve been here for a couple years or decades, there is a place where you can go to meet other people looking to move back themselves. You can also meet those who have already made the move back successfully.

Most people wanting to return home are unsure of where or how to exactly start, unaware of exactly what it takes to make that seemingly overwhelming move back across the big blue. Logistics, housing, visas, employment, and education are just a few of the challenges we discuss and offer advice on. Husbands, wives and children can complicate this process and now the resources you need to make that big step are at your fingertips.

Enter the Repat Network: a group created with the idea of bringing expatriates back home. We are “a community helping long-term expats plan, execute and successfully repatriate.” One tidbit I will share as a teaser is that the visa process is similar for most countries and can generally be accomplished without attorneys. Many expats (myself included) have applied for, and succeeded in getting a spousal visa. We have outlined the steps necessary in both English and Korean. Additionally, the RepatNetwork.com site itself has just undergone major update. The onboarding process for new members now walks people through a minicourse on the repatriation process with videos and documents made specifically for the group over the years (with expertise from different content creators). In addition to the website itself, we have both Facebook and LinkedIn pages where you can connect with other people. Do you need someone else to look at your profession profile, resume or CV? Do you need endorsements or more connections to reach that magic number 500 on LinkedIn? Well, you’ve come to the right place. Every week the admin encourages to post your progress as it’s a great way to stay motivated. You will quickly develop friendships with people sharing your same problems and/or concerns. Sharing personal and professional gains is highly encouraged so go ahead and post something you are working on, even if you could get some personal benefit (e.g. money, subscribers to your YouTube channel, etc.) Just make sure that you post about it in a way that is helpful, educational, or inspirational to others in the group. OK, so youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve decided to head back but what will you do when you get back home? If you still feel like teaching, there are teachers who have repatriated successfully to their home countries. Some have gone into university administration, become foreign student liaisons, licensed teachers, instructional designers, and educational technologists and/or started teaching at local and international schools. Conversely, there are former EFL/ESL teachers (among other professions) who have transitioned or are currently transitioning into UX/UI design, SEO, web development, programming, nursing, physical therapy, finance, solar energy, project management among many other attainable, and financially stable employment options. Do you not see yourself working for someone else? There is a portion of the network dedicated to entrepreneurship. Some successful entrepreneurs include homestay and summer camp founders, YouTube content creators, HR corporate trainers and many others so whatever trajectory you may have, the network can help you get there. Hong Kong is a melting pot of Eastern and Western culture which is visible in everything from the architecture and food to its traditions and fashion. This also means that it has a lot to offer to every traveler - it’s perfect for a cityscape, island getaway or nature adventure. 홍콩은 동양과 서양 문화의 용광로이며, 건축과 음식에서부터 홍 콩의 전통 및 패션까지 모든 것에서 이를 보여준다. 또한 이 말은 모든 여행객들에게 많은 것을 제공해준다는 의미이기도 하며 그 렇기에 도시의 풍경, 섬 여행 혹은 자연 속의 모험을 즐기기에 완 벽하다.

Central / Kowloon - The Cityscape

센트럴/카오룽 - 도시 풍경 On my first day in Hong Kong I spent hours walking around Old Town Central which is a collection of history, food, art and culture. There is so much to see and taste along the way that I was surprised 5 hours had passed since I began. It is a wonderful way to get a taste of Hong Kong and its amalgam of culture. My second day in the city took me to Kowloon where I explored one of Hong Kong’s mega malls and then spent the warm afternoon relaxing at the West Kowloon culture district. The Nursery Park, in the culture district, offers wonderful views of Victoria Harbor and is a great place to picnic, read or watch the sunset. In the evenings I would take the - very cheap - Star Ferry across Victoria Harbor to get a spectacular skyline view of Hong Kong. Central and Kowloon shine at night with its numerous bars and clubs to explore ranging from the high end to your average pub. Not being a night owl myself I only ventured to Sevva Rooftop bar on my last evening - a swanky bar with artisan drinks and city views to kill. While the city had so much more to discover I was also itching to explore other aspects of Hong Kong.

홍콩에서의 첫날, 역사와 음식, 미술, 문화를 한데 모아놓은 올드타운 센트럴을 걸어다니는데 시간을 보냈다. 걸어다닌 지 다섯 시간이 지났다는 것에 깜짝 놀랄 정도로 걸어다니는 동안 볼 것과 먹어봐야할 것들이 가득했다. 홍콩의 맛과 문 화의 혼재를 즐길 수 있는 아주 좋은 방법이었다. 도시 안에 서의 두번째 날은 카오룽에서 보냈는데 홍콩의 거대한 쇼핑 몰 중 하나를 돌아다니고 서카오룽문화지구에서 느긋하게 더운 오후 시간을 보냈다. 문화지구 안에 있는 먀오푸 공원 은 빅토리아 항구의 아름다운 뷰를 선사했고 소풍, 독서, 노 을을 감상하기에 딱인 곳이었다. 저녁에는 홍콩의 장관인 스 카이라인 뷰를 보기 위해 스타 페리를 타고 싶었다(아주 저 렴하다.) 밤의 센트럴과 카오룽은 고급스러운 곳에서부터 보 통의 펍까지 다양하게 있는 수많은 바와 클럽 때문에 반짝 였다. 필자는 올빼미 스타일이 아니라 마지막날 저녁에 세바 루프탑(Sevva Rooftop) 바에만 갔다. 정성들여 만든 음료와 끝내주는 홍콩의 뷰가 있는 호화스러운 바였다. 도시 내에 찾아 볼 거리가 가득했지만 홍콩의 다른 면을 탐험하고 싶다 는 마음이 간질거렸다. -continued on p38-

New territories - The Nature Adventure

뉴 테리토리 - 자연 탐험 This led me to the New Territories which is perhaps the least explored part of Hong Kong but offers the most incredible landscapes, wetlands and mountains - it is the most rural and least developed area of Hong Kong. A trip starting from the Central region takes about an hour with a train or bus transfer but the destination is worth the distance. On my first day exploring the new territories, I headed to the Hong Kong Wetland park in the northern part of Tin Shui Wai. The numerous wetland creatures, bird hides and walking paths made for a great activity on a warm day. On my second day in the area I ventured to Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden (KFBG) - a little known jewel hidden in Hong Kong. The KFBG lies along the northern slope of Tai Mo Shan, the highest mountain in Hong Kong. Once there you can hike or take a tour bus to see the forest, theme gardens and vegetable terraces. When you finish exploring the mountainside I suggest stopping at the KFBG restaurant, which is fully vegan and supplied by local farmers in keeping with their mission of harmonising their relationship with the environment. It was one of the most beautiful places I visited in Hong Kong and a well worth escape from the city.

이 부분에서는 필자를 뉴 테리토리로 이끌었다. 아마도 홍콩에서 가장 알려지지 않았지만 가장 멋진 풍경, 습지, 산을 보여주는 곳 인데 홍콩 내에서 가장 시골지역이고 개발이 안 된 곳이다. 센트 럴 지역에서 시작한 여정은 기차나 버스로 약 한시간이 걸리지만 그 거리를 기꺼이 가 볼만 했다. 뉴테리토리를 돌아본 첫날에는 틴수이와이의 북쪽에 있는 홍콩습지공원로 향했다. 따뜻한 날에 할 만한 활동을 위해 많은 습지 생물과 관측소, 산책로가 만들어 져 있다. 이 지역에서의 둘째날에는 ‘카두리 실험 농장과 식물원 (KFBG)’에 가 보았다. 잘 알려지지 않은 홍콩의 숨겨진 보석과도 같은 곳이었다. 농장은 타이모 산의 북쪽 비탈에 길게 자리잡고 있으며 타이모 산은 홍콩에서 가장 높은 산이다. 그 곳에 가면 숲 과 테마 가든, 채소를 키우는 밭을 보기 위해 등산을 하거나 버스 를 탈 수 있다. 산쪽에서 탐험을 마치고 나면 농장의 식당에 가 보 길 추천하는데, 메뉴는 완전히 채식이고 환경과 조화로운 관계를 만들어가는 일을 하며 살아가는 지역의 농부들이 재료를 공급한 다. 홍콩에서 가 본 곳 중에 가장 아름다운 곳 중 하나였고, 도시 에서 벗어나 볼 만 했다.

an island adventure in the middle of your scape it will only take you an hour ferry ride to arrive. This is exactly what I did when I decided to explore the small but picturesque island of Cheung Chau. You can easily walk or bike around this island within an hour or two but it still leaves much to see and do from its temples, to beaches and seafood restaurants. After having walked around I stopped for a taste of some fresh seafood at one of the numerous establishments and was not disappointed. I then lazed the afternoon away enjoying the view and a cup of coffee while I waited for the sunset. It was a wonderful, easy and cheap island getaway. 홍콩에 좋은 점 중 하나는 대중교통이다. 버스에서부터 기차, 트 램, 페리까지 다양한데, 이는 홍콩이 돌아다니기에 편리하고 주 머니 사정에 무리가 가지 않는다는 것이다. 또한, 만약 여행 도중 에 섬에서의 모험을 하고자 한다면 페리를 타고 섬에 가는데 한 시간 밖에 걸리지 않는다는 것이기도 하다. 작지만 그림처럼 아 름다운 청차우 섬을 가보기로 결정했을 때 정확히 필자가 한 일 이다. 이 섬에서는 걸어서 혹은 자전거를 타고 한두시간 내에 쉽 게 돌아다녀볼 수 있다. 하지면 섬의 사원부터 해변가, 해산물 레 스토랑 등 여전히 볼거리와 할거리가 많이 남아 있다. 걸어서 돌 아다니고 나서, 신선한 해산물을 맛보기 위해 수많은 식당 중 한

In a city like this, no one knows who you are. Fade and disappear into a sea of anonymity. Like a grain of sand flowing through the bottleneck, collecting at the bottom of the chronograph. Time moves on and so do the people in this city. Blink and they might disappear, not stopping as they move about their day. The last grain drops and the hourglass turns over to repeat itself, passing by new grains in the bottleneck.

Think of this artsy street as the “Insa-dong” of Daegu. As you walk along, you’ll see art galleries, studios and antique shops. You can stop in shops to buy art or just to browse through the incredible work of local artists. While you can enjoy exhibitions throughout the year, this street is particularly busy every October with the Bongsan Art Festival. Another highlight of this area is the Bongsan Culture and Art Hall where you can catch some performances and small-scale exhibitions.

The late Kim Kwang-suk, a famous Korean folk singer-songwriter who was popular in the 1980s, is still admired by many Korean music lovers today. You can definitely feel the love for the late artist as you stroll down the 350 meter long street that was designed to remember and honor him. The walls of this street are plastered with murals of Kim and you can hear his music faintly playing as you stroll along. On the weekends, you can visit a flea market here and there are also several famous restaurants in the area such as Daehan News, Two Bbul, Pic&iq (picnic), Percent, Barazi, Gajok and Laura’s Mill. 73

Seomun Market Area Established in the Goryeo Dynasty, Seomun market was one of the three major markets during the Joseon dynasty. After the Korean War, a large linen and cotton wholesale and retail market was created. The textile industry is the traditional industry of Daegu. Seomun market is a lively place for locals and tourists alike that truly showcases an original part of Daegu culture. You can find an assortment of food as well as affordable, well-made market goods. Convenient Facilities Parking building The eight story parking ramp is located between Dong-san shopping district and sector two. There are two entrances and the ramp can hold 660 cars. It costs 500 won to park for 30 minutes with a 250 won charge for each additional ten minutes of parking. You can pay at an automated machine on the first floor. Credit cards and transportation cards are accepted. Parking lot There are two sections that hold up to 350 cars. It can hold 60 cars in the Dongsan shopping district and 50 cars in the basement of each of the five additional sectors. ATM You can find them at various places around Seomun market. There is also one located on the first floor of the parking ramp. Information Center It is located right next to the entrance of the parking ramp. You will see a sign that says, “Information Center”. Inside, you can collect all the information you need about tourist destinations in Daegu as well as more information about Seomun Market.

Things to remember while shopping

Transportation Subway (Sinnam Station of Green Line) To find “Yangmal alley (socks alley),” take subway line two to Sinnam station and take exit number one. Right after you exit, look for an alley on your right. Yangmal alley merges with a main road. Walk along this road or about seven minutes (350 meters) and you will see an arch that is the entrance to Seomun market. Dongsan Shopping District You can find dishes and flatware in the basement. On the first floor, you can find baby goods, children’s clothing and many more household items. On the second floor and above, you’ll find cute clothing for a reasonable price.

District Five It’s located at the outer corner of Seomun market but is always packed with people. On the first floor, you’ll see shoppers buying dishes either for commercial use or for their own homes. The second floor sells clothing.

Distrcit One The first floor sells linen and silk fabrics, and the second floor sells Korean made clothing and luxury bedding. This spot is visited by Koreans of all ages taking a look at the colorful, luxurious fabrics.

AJin Shopping District This place is ideal for artists and designers, “Home-Fashion” crafts and it sells hand-made clothing. Along the streets of this district, you can find various tools and materials such as buttons, feathers, ribbons, zippers and laces. “Mending Street” is lined up and down with sewing machines and seamstresses and tailors who have been sewing for over ten years – another special feature of the Jin Shopping District.

District Two This building burned down in 2005 but was recently rebuilt and revived with a brand new facility. In the basement, you can grab a bite to eat. They sell things like strawberry cakes, pork belly, Jajangmyeon, Mon-na-ni Tteok-bokki and grilled bulgogi. The first floor is retail and clothing and the third and fourth floors sell fabric. This spot is always popular for Daegu locals, but receives an influx of foreign shoppers in October buying fabric for Halloween costumes. District Four District four is a general store. On the first floor, you will find a random mix of tuxedos, garments, crafts and traditional Korean souvenirs. You can buy silk fabrics and bedding on the second floor.

Myungpoom Plaza Myungpoom Plaza is a fashion center located in Seomun market. The first floor sells jewelry, accessories, imported goods, shoes, dishes and baby goods. The second and third floors sell underwear and women’s clothing. This is a one-stop shop plaza with a little bit of everything Dried Sea Food District The dried sea food district of Seomun Market sells dried fruits, nuts and (of course) an uncountable amount of dried sea food. In fact, 60 to 70 percent of all dried foods sold in Daegu are sold here. An added bonus is that you can buy the goods for about 20 or 30 percent cheaper here than you can at the market. To get here, walk past the arched structure and you will see it on your left.
