Travel Calendar Adrenaline Kick 4 of the Best MAGAZINE ISSUE V 1st Special Edition May 2024July 2024

DEAR TRAVEL ENTHUSIASTS,

WELCOME TO THE JOURNEY THROUGH OUR LATEST MAGAZINE.

We are a bit proud that this is already the fifth issue that is presented to you today. I remember well when the plan for it was conceived—it retrospectively feels like its own intercultural project.

I was visiting my son and his family in Melbourne. Inspired by good conversations and lively exchange, it suddenly became clear to me that this is what I wanted to do next for Dabuka: write stories that combine information with concrete travel tips.

Of course, turning an idea into reality takes some time, and if Tarek and my son hadn't supported me again and again, the project might have remained just in my head. But it became a reality, and we are delighted every time someone takes the time to browse through our magazine. We also greatly appreciate every piece of feedback, as stories are not only meant to be told, they are meant to continue living in the minds of the listeners or readers.

Currently, I am thinking about why our slogan is "Call it a dream." We try to make dreams come true, which we have managed to do several times.

One example was a cultural event that we moved to the desert. Against the backdrop of the sunset, sitting amidst the sand dunes, spectators could watch a ballerina and listen to a clarinetist. Afterwards, a guest came up to me and said, very moved: "I would never have believed that this personal dream of mine could become reality."

In this spirit, we are convinced that it is always possible to fulfill wishes that one may sometimes not even admit to oneself.

Dream and let us know!

Warm regards,

SANDBOARDING IN FAYOUM - BY NADINE FROM MUNICH, GERMANY

Sandboarding in Egypt

Having two German friends visiting in Egypt in the beginning of April 2024 I wanted to show them the desert combined with some physical activity. We reserved a daytrip to Fayoum for “Sandboarding”.

We definitely enjoyed the trip with Dabuka a lot. The whole journey went very smoothly and the guide/driver/cook was punctual, very very friendly and everything we could potentially need was accounted for.

Further, we really appreciated the flexibility throughout the journey regarding the activities we could do and the places we could visit. It was clearly much more than a sandboarding experience witnessing the endless sand dunes, watching the sunset and enjoying the freshly prepared dish in addition to the exciting drive through the desert.

e know a place that has already combined dreams and reality and could now do so again.

Twenty kilometers west of Alexandria, a diverse building complex dreams away between bushes and trees with

which it has literally grown together. In the year 1982 the interior designer and artist Ishaq Azmi founded here a fine arts establishment under the name of “Al Shona”(thegarner).Azmiwasintentupon collecting the acquisitions of artists belongingtodifferentschoolsofartuntilhe managedtocreatealivelyartisticactivityin “AlShona”thatisflankedbythenumerous resortsontheNorthcoast.

Al Shona has been empty since 2010 after resignation and later death of the founder We, i e Maged Ishaq Azmi, son of the founder and the Art Design Center Heliopolis still feel the special spirit of this place and want to revive it for the greater good.

Why and why now? From the beginning, Al Shona was driven by the vision that art and culture connect and bring people together Today we need dialogue between people more than ever and therefore see a real need to build bridges through exhibitions, workshops and cultural events Artists are particularly sensitive people, which is why this place is exactly the right place for them Alexandria can still be the starting point for a Mediterranean dialogue today It could be a piece of identity of Egypt to connect the world

In challenging times around the world, the fire that once ignited one individual’s passion can be a light for many generations to come Good luck for Al Shona

How It All Began (see Magazine No 2): My way from Germany to Tunisia – Libya – Egypt – (Part IV) Conclusion

As a German-Egyptian, I have always traveled back and forth between both countries and cultures And – certainly not to the delight of my parents – my life decisions were based on visions that I was willing to implement on my own if necessary and with an uncertain outcome I remember one example: 30 years ago, I traveled by car from Germany to Egypt via Tunisia and Libya

A journey through multiple countries always has special milestones at border stations After various adventures at the previous borders, I had now successfully left Libya behind and reached the Egyptian border I already felt almost at home and was initially warmly welcomed But then, a border guard suddenly felt the need to ask me for a fire extinguisher, which I did not have and I normally didn’t need For this fellow, the fire extinguisher became the center of the universe, and he insisted on me handing over the vehicle registration, so he had a guarantee that he was doing his job well I figured out the easiest way to get rid of the nagging person: to give him my German vehicle registration, and I would buy a fire extinguisher in no time. That is what I did and

drove on In the passport control processing hall, I encountered a cow, casually standing there observing its surroundings Spontaneously, the thought crossed my mind: "Cows are happy creatures They are outside the law, can move as they please, and don't need a fire extinguisher..." But since I'm not a cow, I stood in line at passport control, mainly among Egyptians who worked as guest workers in Libya When I finally approached the counter attendant, he –

naturally – took offense at first that I presented a German passport with an Arabic name and birthplace of Cairo That had to be checked again Eventually, I was summoned to the office of state security – I felt somewhat strange about it But the gentleman in plain clothes who chatted with me there revealed after a while that he knew my father and therefore, of course, I could enter without any problems Well then! They even asked if I needed anything else from state security – but I politely declined (who on earth needs anything else from state security besides trying to have as little to do with them as possible?)

Now it was no problem to acquire the magnificent specimen of a fire extinguisher from the company "Bavaria" and rush back to my car and the gentleman with my vehicle papers I found the gentleman quickly – however, he had the next surprise in store for me "Vehicle papers?" – never seen Naturally, I became very active now and insisted on searching for my papers – which, however, remained unsuccessful In the border area without evidence that this car belonged to me – that simply wouldn't do. So, with the courage of desperation, I sought out the next superior and told him the story While he was willing to bring the uniformed lad to a military court for misappropriation of

7

documents – that still didn't bring back my papers I did feel a small sense of satisfaction at the thought of how much fear the border guard might now be experiencing – but above all, my overwhelming desire was to finally be able to drive home Our chatter had by now attracted general attention, and something happened that I would now describe from today's perspective as an "Egyptian solution" In principle, it's impossible for a country to issue vehicle papers for a car from another country But a customs officer had his "bright five minutes" and sent me Ahmed – essentially just an overweight lackey for odd jobs, I'm sure But this Ahmed was a clever fellow and accompanied me on an odyssey through customs, where he told each responsible supervisor many wonderful stories (after all, I still had a Carnet de Passage from the ADAC in Germany and also a copy of my German vehicle registration). And indeed – 24 hours later, it was done – my car and I had officially entered together – a German car with Egyptian papers – somehow that suited me

I never saw Ahmed again – but he has a firm place in my heart

The last 700 km to my parents' house now felt almost like a walk I was proud of myself too – I had made it!! The day after my return, as I washed my car, a red stream of sand from Cyrenaica poured onto the street The visible traces of the journey seeped into the asphalt. So that I could fully rejoice in my arrival, I now wanted to fulfill a promise: Once, a senior official had helped me a lot when I entered Libya, and I had promised to let him know when I arrived safely in Egypt At that time, I didn't live in the digital age yet, and to be able to pass on such a message, I had to arrange for an international call at

the office. It took two days for a connection to be established, there were cracks and static, and the friend who had set up the connection for me hung up in fright just as it seemed to be working You never knew who else might be listening I left it at that and hoped that my Libyan friend would interpret "no news as good news"

I knew that in three months' time, I would start on that same trip in the opposite direction, and I would look up my first “Libyan friend“ What I didn’t know by then was, that I would make that trip yearly for the next 18 years

Beyond the renowned wonders of Egypt's Nile Valley lies a lesserexplored realm—the western desert, home to remnants of Roman influence

Join us on an expedition into this forgotten landscape as we uncover the secrets of Roman forts and trade routes, illuminating a chapter of history often overshadowed by the Nile's grandeur

The Darb el-Arbayn Trade Route:

The Darb el-Arbayn, an ancient trade route, served as a vital artery connecting the Mediterranean with SubSaharan Africa Along its path, merchants traversed desert oases, facilitating the exchange of precious commodities such as spices, gemstones, and silk This route not only fueled economic prosperity but also

facilitated cultural exchange across distant lands

The Role of Forts:

Roman forts dotted the Darb el-Arbayn, strategically positioned to safeguard travelers and ensure the flow of goods These fortresses, while serving as military outposts, also functioned as bustling hubs of commerce and cultural

interaction They provided a sense of security amidst the harsh desert environment, fostering trade and cooperation

Spread across the vast sand dunes of the western desert of Egypt lies a network of Roman fortresses that not only secured the borders of the Roman Empire but also monitored the flow of trade between Rome and Sub-Saharan Africa Among these monumental fortifications, three stood out prominently: the fortress of Dionysias, Dimeh el Saba, and Qasr el-Ghweita

The Heart of Roman Presence: Dionysias Dionysias, also known as Dush, stood as the most powerful of the Roman fortresses in the Kharga Oasis Its strategic location secured the southern border of the Roman Empire and controlled the crucial trade routes through the oasis As a symbol of Roman authority, Dionysias was not merely a military stronghold but also a nexus of trade and power in the region

The Pillar of Trade: Dimeh el Saba

Less imposing but equally significant, Dimeh el Saba played a pivotal role in safeguarding trade routes and facilitating the exchange of goods and information between Egypt and the Roman Empire. As a trading post, it was a focal point of commerce and an integral part of the Roman defense network in the region

The Protective Wall of the Western Desert: Qasr el-Ghweita

Completing the trio of Roman fortresses, Qasr el-Ghweita formed an unyielding line of defense against hostile incursions into the western desert of Egypt Though less renowned, its role in securing borders and monitoring trade routes was invaluable. Together with its counterparts, it formed an impregnable barrier against desert threats

The Invisible Thread of Coordination

Though each fortress had its own

significance, they were bound together by an invisible thread of coordination and collaboration They formed a seamless defense network that ensured the security of the region and facilitated the free flow of trade and communication. Along the Darb al Arbayn, the vital trade route between the Roman Empire and Sub-Saharan Africa, these fortresses stood as testaments to Roman power and unity

The Importance of Trade Routes:

The trade routes crisscrossing Egypt's western desert were lifelines for the Roman economy, facilitating the exchange of goods and ideas Caravans traversing these routes brought prosperity and cultural enrichment, contributing to the vibrancy of the Roman Empire

Embark on an adventure into Egypt's western desert and uncover the hidden treasures of Roman history From the bustling trade routes to the silent ruins of fortresses, each discovery offers a glimpse into a world shaped by commerce, culture, and conquest As we trace the footsteps of ancient travelers and soldiers, we gain a deeper appreciation for the enduring legacy of the Roman Empire in this remote corner of the world

Personaltraveltips

Often the first reaction we get from people when we say we have travelled to Socotra Yemen is you guessed it “is it safe?” I had the same question as I decided to travel to Socotra So I thought I should investigate to be sure that we weren’t heading off into the middle of a war zone like completely irresponsible people But in reality, the biggest danger you’ll face is probably the risk of porcupine fish spikes in your foot as you walk the beach Yep, that happens And in all honesty, sounds way worse than it actually is

So is Socotra safe, it most absolutely is The war on the mainland feels very removed and disconnected from the laid back island life style of Socotra

Currency

The most widely accepted currency in Socotra is US Dollars The tours are essentially all inclusive and after you have paid your trip and put aside money for tipping the driver, guide and cook, there is little else to pay for Though it’s definitely a good idea to bring a little extra so that you can purchase small souvenirs here and there

Tipping

It is recommended to tip the guides,driversandcooks10-20 USD each per day. This indicationrangesbetweenfairto generous, sodependingonyour overall level of satisfaction you canmakethecallhere.

From our "Adrenaline Kick" series.

Adrenaline is also referred to as the survival hormone It enhances our perception through neurotransmitters in the brain. An adrenaline rush increases the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood to provide a boost of energy According to Firdaus Dhabhar's experiment at Stanford University, this can result in cancer forming less frequently and slowly, and strengthens the immune defense

Do we need adrenaline rushes? Science journalist Urs Wellmann has posted in his book that stress makes us awake, healthy, and fit. "We need stress to live," according to Dr Peter Heilmeyer, head of the rehabilitation clinic in Isny In addition to warning about Burn-Out Syndrome, he now also warns about Bore-Out Syndrome It derives from the English "to bore" (to be bored)

Dr Joachim Kugler, psychologist and physician at the Technical University in Dresden said: "Stress ensures that we evolve It is the path to selfactualization."

Read the dunes Learn to understand your environment Understanding the different types of dune formations allows you to set the right trail

Read the sand For some it all looks the same, but for a skilled desert driver the different surfaces and sand colors make a world of difference An area with a rippled sand pattern for instance provides a reasonably hard surface due to variations in grain sizes that is causing the rippling effect A completely flat surface is often much more unstable, especially during and around the summer period

Look where you’re going Assuming you have an end location/coordinate in mind, when setting the trail be mindful of where you are going At high points try to look ahead to know where you are going and anticipate how to get there Don’t be afraid of the unknown Whatever is behind the dune’s crest, you will be able to descent it Keep momentum A key skill for desert drivers is to maintain the right momentum Especially in a challenging terrain when it’s hot and dry and the sand is loose the most important aspect of desert driving is to maintain the right balance between traction and momentum Accelerating too fast, especially from a standstill position is a great way to dig yourself in Know where to stop Don’t use the break if you don’t have to

Going up and down When ascending and descending make sure to go up and down the dune in a straight direction to ensure equal weight distribution to the wheels

Keep distance Make sure to keep safe distance from each other when driving in convoy As the lead car sets the trail the driver will often stop or slow pace to look ahead Keep sufficient distance and make sure the vehicle in front of you has sufficient maneuvering space to reverse if necessary

"Dabuka Blue" – Our Personal Offer on Lake Nasser

Life sometimes has surprises in store for everyone – personally, I never thought I would become a boat owner. However, what some call coincidence led me on a trip with Tarek to Aswan last year, where an idea was born that has now been realized in wood and steel: We now offer not only land journeys but also water voyages.

Originally a fishing boat, it can now accommodate up to 10 people and travel from Aswan to Abu Simbel and back. With a carefully selected interior and a crew that pampers guests around the clock, we aim to combine adventure and comfort.

What sets it apart – a hallmark of ours! – is its individuality. Far from the crowds, our Dabuka Blue charts its own course. Each stop is different and offers unique exploration opportunities.

Our captain and tour guide are happy to accommodate guests' requests whenever possible.

Here are excerpts from an initial proposal: (Abu Simbel – Aswan)

You will embark on our luxury safari boat –“Dabuka Blue” - in Abu Simbel at lunchtime. Get familiar with your floating home for the next days.

We sail around four hours to Kasr Ibrim, also known as Ibrim Palace.

Amada - Pennout - Wadi el Arab (Luxury Safari Boat)

Breakfast on board. First thing in the morning we will glance at the various nomadic birds that visit Lake Nasser annually (at certain seasons) as we leave our boat to pursue the temples of Amada, Pennout and El Derr.

These temples have been moved by the UNESCO and many other global organizations.

Tour name: Dabuka Blue

Duration: 10 days

Price: on request before it became

“Dabuka Blue”

The temple of Amada is considered among the most interesting temples in Nubia. They were built by the king Thoutmosis III and the king Amenophis II.

Dakka- Wadi El Seboua- Meharraqa (Luxury Safari Boat)

Breakfast on board. On this day we travel down Lake Nasser with the goal of discovering three relocated temples, known for their unique sculptures and delicate beauty.

Dakka (Greek: Pselchis): Erected in the same site by the Nubian king Ergamenes II along with Ptolemy II whilst they shared rule over Lower Nubia in the Third century. Later, the temple was refurbished by Roman Emperors Augustus and Tiberius. Wadi El Seboua: Accessed through a pathway of sphinxes bearing Ramses's effigy, this temple was built by the Pharaoh Ramses II in dedication to the Gods Amun-Re and Ra.

Kalabsha - Beit El Wali – Aswan (Luxury Safari Boat)

Breakfast will be served as we make an early departure towards Aswan city. This particular route features a beautiful display of the Lake's banks.

Kalabsha was known with the name of Mandoulis dates back to the time of the Romains In the old days it was located in the city of Kalabsha and then rescued and moved to its actual location

Beit el Wali means the house of Saint;

Of course, there are many ways to join this boat tour – one option is the breathtaking desert road through the oases to Aswan (see our website)

But as the saying goes, all roads lead to Rome I am very excited about the expansion of our fleet and also eager to hear your feedback!

Smooth sailing and best regards, Dorothee

MOUNT KILIMANJARO - A once in a lifetime experience

Tanzania is an Eldorado for outdoor enthusiasts seeking thrilling hiking and trekking experiences With its diverse landscapes and breathtaking natural wonders, this East African country offers an abundance of opportunities to explore waterfalls, encounter wildlife, and immerse yourself in stunning scenery Among the most renowned options is Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, soaring to an impressive 5,895 metres or 19,341 feet Scaling Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, is a popular choice for adventure seekers from around the globe

Our example:

8 day Kilimanjaro Lemosho route

This non-technical Kilimanjaro camping route is relatively new and one of the most popular routes currently chosen for ascending Kilimanjaro because of its beauty, views, and route profile The trip begins in the isolated west Kilimanjaro area, through the forest reserve, and is often much quieter due to its remote starting point The path approaches the Kibo cone through the Shira Plateau, finally connecting the southern circuit and passing the small “scrambling” (using your hands and legs) segment at the Barranco wall, which genuinely gives you that mountain climbing sense without any special equipment or experience

GOOD-TO-KNOW

To climb Mount Kilimanjaro, it is important to have a good level of fitness

The altitude, basic facilities, and rugged terrain can put a significant strain on your body You need to be prepared for the physical and mental stress that comes with enduring diverse temperatures and varying altitudes, while trekking for several consecutive days.

While it is possible for reasonably active individuals with a healthy lifestyle to summit Kilimanjaro, the level of preparation and training you undertake can greatly impact the difficulty of the climb The more you prepare, the more enjoyable the climb will be for you We recommend engaging in regular hiking with a backpack containing some weight, such as books, several weeks before the climb. This will help your body acclimate to the added weight and conditions.

Please note that climbing Kilimanjaro is aendeavour, anditiscrucialtoconsult with a qualified guide and adhere to safetyguidelinestoensureasuccessful andsafeascent

Despitetakingpreventativemeasures,it is still possible to experience altitude sickness

This condition is relatively common during Kilimanjaro climbs due to reduced oxygen levels at higher elevations, which can result in symptoms such as headaches and nausea It is important not to ignore these symptoms and to listen to your body while mountaineering. Altitude sickness typically subsides upon descending

Always remember to prioritise your safetyandwell-beingduringtheclimb

As you know – you should try to make yourdreamscometrue We’rehappyto helpheretoo

Desert Ship Experience

A Camel Safari through the White Desert

We know that many of you have repeatedly asked about journeys with camels – until now, we have always declined because we didn't have trustworthy contacts. This has now changed, andweareveryexcitedtobeableto offeryouthisspecialhighlight.Afterbeingdriven from Cairo to the Bahareya Oasis by car, you willswitchmodesoftransportandtravelthrough the White Desert and nearby sand dunes with yourcaravanandalocalguide. Funanduniqueexperiencesareguaranteed!

Fromthereportofaparticipant:“Iquiteenjoyed riding a camel – my problem was more with getting on and off. These animals are quite large, and when they prepare for you to reach solid ground again, they suddenly bend both frontlegs, kneelingdownsoyoucandismount. However, I underestimated the momentum of this movement and didn’t hold on tight. Suddenly, I was sliding down the camel’s neck at increasing speed – right into the next sand dune. You can imagine – there was laughter, andIfeltabitsillyatfirst.Butitonlyhappened once, andlaterIwasproudtoreallybefriends withmycamel.” (Michaela,Switzerland)

Didyouknow?

Unlike most other even-toed ungulates (see giraffes), camels move in a pacing gait, meaning they alternately move the left and right pairs of legs. For this reason, they are also called "desert ships" as they rock the rider.

Both animal families (lamas and camels) are very friendly and relaxed animals, quickly overcoming any apprehension. They tolerate hectic movements and spontaneous loud expressions much more than, for example, horses.

The camels are gentle and characterized by greatintelligence.Theyarecalmandefficient, regardless of the climatic conditions. They sharethesamefeelingsastheirowner:ifhe becomesfrightened, thecamelsconsequently reactanddefendhim.

Route: Cairo – Bahareya – Crystal Mountain – Black Desert – White Desert –Farafra – Bahareya – Cairo

Whattowearonacamelride?

Loose-fitting, breathable clothing is ideal, allowing for a greater range of motion and flexibility Opt for pants or long skirts rather than shorts or dresses, as these will protect your legs from rubbing against the camel's coarse fur Avoid too tight or constricting footwear, as your feet may swell in the heat.

"7 Days of 'Butterflies in Your Stomach'". New Tour!!

We all know that laughter is healthy. But do you know that particular feeling of butterflies in your stomach when you're full of anticipation and excitement about doing something wonderful, waking up each day thinking: "Now, now, now... I'm looking forward to everything that's coming, life is good!"? This feeling often resides in the desert—just like on our round trip from Hurghada through the Western Desert and back.

Travel the ancient caravan routes of the Bedouins through sand dunes, which also serve as overnight camps. Even today, our Bedouin guides can tell you many stories.

Tip: For those who think they have back problems and therefore cannot sleep on the ground—the sand dunes are a soft bed, you just need to shovel your sleeping spot to fit your body before bedtime

And if you think the desert—and this one in particular—is just a landscape, you are mistaken. The special energy felt in certain places heals stress, tension, and other ailments of civilization. However, we also know that not everyone is keen on going without a shower for very long. Therefore, this tour is planned so that on day 4, we stay overnight in a Bedouin camp where a warm shower will provide a particularly good sense of well-being.

A warm spring opposite the camp is also available for a different kind of bathing fun. Since the camp is near the Dakhla Oasis, we will naturally visit this particularly noteworthy oasis with its picturesque old town, whose origins are in the Islamic era, and where we also find beautiful spots to enjoy a sunset. The tour then leads to the Kharga Oasis with the Hibis and Bagawat temples, as well as Coptic graves. A final night outdoors in the area of Umm Labakha invites you to dream before the journey comes full circle the next day back in Hurghada.

TheBedouin’sSong

I’mjustabedouin:

Interesting facts about Bedouins: For centuries, information among Bedouins was passed down orally, through stories and poems, often with rhythm and melody discussing politics and economics, sometimes accompanied by dances. Usually, several individuals engage in a kind of call-andresponse singing. Even today, it may happen in the evening by the campfire that some crew members grab pots, spoons, or other objects and start to sing.
