RE-OCCUPY Large, vacant lots with no purpose have filled American city-scapes as a result of urban decay. These lots are often privatized and take up a total landmass approximately the same size as Israel. My initiative was to reclaim this land and return it to the public for usage. I created the Re-Occupy park system to push locals to reconsider their use of empty space, discarded objects, and the relationship of public/private property. I housed the movement under the facade of a larger non-profit, developing a step-by-step guide to taking action and launching an official website. I then held the inagural ribbon cutting ceremony for Kansas City’s first Re-Occupy park to usher in the movement.

RECESS In a collaborative process with designers Isabelle Brown and Baillie Weibers, we created and developed an augmented reality gaming environment targeted at combating the apathy many teenagers have towards physical activity. Through our research, we found that teenagers are often motivated by social interaction and entertainment, leading us to gamify the exercise experience. Recess uses nostalgic imagery to feel familiar, delivered using sarcastic rhetoric that’s tailored to appeal to teenagers. By circulating the system through high school gym curriculums, we can overcome accessibility issues and provide students of all household with our Recess kit, including; a pair of our AR goggles, motion tracking wristbands, and the link to download our free app.

BRIEF Identify a target audience and, using mutiple forms of media, create a cohesive system of interventions that will motivate this audience to be physically active.

PENINSULA STATE PARK As the only designer employed by the Friends of Peninsula State Park, I’d previously done work managing social media pages and updating their website. They then approached me and asked if I’d be interested in coordinating the redesign of their website. I started by conducting interviews of adults with young children, in an attempt to better learn what draws in young families. I then went through their current website, notating the structure and organization of their content. Together, we developed an updated sitemap, and I distilled my research into a concise proposal for the look and feeling of the new website. The design was approved by the board with minor edits, and is currently in development.

BRIEF Redesign the Peninsula State Park website in order to modernize the Park’s web presence, appealing to a new demographic of younger families without distancing the Park’s current audience (primarily adults aged 50+).

EARBUDS In a collaborative process with designers Isabelle Brown and Alex Izaguirre, we crafted the framework for the podcast streaming application, EarBuds. We took inspiration from what we felt were the most intuitive sound based interactions and developed that into a comprehensive sitemap and mockups for desktop, mobile, and smartwatch based applications. We specifically tailored the app’s design to the season-based structure of podcasts, integrating references from video streaming services, thus creating a new way of navigating sound-based archives. Each application took into account a variety of contexts, integrating concepts of hands-free usage, voice activation, and seamless device-to-device transitioning.

L.O.T.U.S. An acronym for the “Local Operating Technical Upkeep System”, this project came from firsthand observations of my peers attempting to deal with various issues. The current way of handling IT issues often involves bouncing between FAQ’s pages and calling technicians, all while dealing with a language barrier filled with technical jargon. This led to a series of interviews with ITAM technologists and tech-industry professionals. I pulled together functional aspects of FAQ’s pages, call-based customer support systems, computer health autodiagnosis software, and cloud-based databases into a concept for one seamless, coherent structure that lives as an integrated feature in a computers operating system.

WE MISS THEM In a collaborative effort with the Kansas City based non-profit Communities Creating Opportunity, we developed a strategic campaign to try and address the increasing levels of urban violence in the Kansas City area. By hosting workshops for families who’ve recently lost a loved one to violent events, we help amplify their voices and experiences with our violent climate. Together, we are creating a series of posters that serve as publicly facing memorials to be placed at the site of the incident, showing that our love is stronger than our pain, and our city will not stand for this anymore. Launched simultaneously would be a series of posters prompting passers-by to add their name to the poster if their life has been personally impacted by urban violence. Both poster series will live digitally on a web-based archive, serving to document the campaign.

BRIEF Collaborate with a local, non-profit organization to create a service, product, or campaign built around designing for social good.

THE FOLLY JAZZ SERIES In a collaborative effort with the Folly Theater, the students at KCAI competed to design a series of posters for their 35th annual jazz series. My poster system relied on a typographic template, inspired by the Folly Theater’s iconic sign. My poster for Lee Ritenour was selected to be used as promotional material for his installment in the series, and my design was adapted to fit a digital billboard along the side of US-71, along with a facebook promotional page.

BRIEF Create a robust system for designing posters that can be developed into individual, yet cohesive pieces.

BRUSHBANK MUSIC FEST Having been handed an unedited text document containing the necessary information, I was tasked with organizing the information into a coherent set of documents to help with event programming. This entailed mapping out the space, sequencing the artists, assigning artists to each stage, and developing a name for the festival. Using this information, I conducted a series of interviews that informed my designs for the corresponding poster and tearaway program, allowing the user to take information regarding the lineup and event space along with them. The imagery and type treatment were informed by local garage-bands, alluding to the origin of all of these artists as low-key performers. The design materials were also intentionally “acidic, further adding to the experimental, technically adept, and abrasive voice to be heard at the festival.

BRIEF Utilizing an unedited initial text document, organize the information given into an easily digestible program for a summer music festival to be held in Theis Park, then develop a poster and corresponding takeaway to advertise the event.

HIVE COMPLEXES This project was developed as a response to the following question; how can we build more for less. My aim was to look at how to elevate affordable housing, making it feel more luxurious without elevating the associated cost. Through the use of hexagonal shapes, a form which gives no wasted space and takes less materials to build than the traditional rectangular room, I created a series of floor plans utilizing the conventions of American housing layouts in the smallest space possible. These plans were 3D rendered to better visualize the space. The complex was then given a robust identity, complimented by a custom typeface, and applied to wayfinding and signage.

BRIEF Develop a method to make traditional luxuries accessible to disadvantaged populations through design .

NEXUS OS In a collaboration with designers Sydney Sanders and Alex Izaguirre, we crafted an approach to tackling social isolation and digital overconsumption in our culture. In tandem with research from the Center for Humane Technology, we designed an update to the existing IOS system, pushing people away from using their phones and towards having more meaningful social interactions. Our 4-part strategy starts with providing awareness to the user of their own habits. Then, we move to discouraging the use of the phone as a distraction and encouraging self-control. Finally, we have to provide an alternative for socialization that can address phone-withdrawl symptoms.

BIG PICNIC In collaboration with fellow designer Tori Green, we worked with representatives from the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art to craft a theme for their annual Big Picnic event. This year, the Big Picnic was also the first retrospective exhibition of the work of Wendell Castle. Our proposal centered around the work of Wendell Castle, pulling a selection of keywords from his artists statements, composing a visual language off of this core set of ideas to be developed into the event materials. The corresponding sculpture hunt highlights a selection of sculptures from the museum’s garden, providing a series of wooden blocks that visually reference each sculpture and giving kids the parts to make and decorate their own sculpture collection necklace. Our proposed children’s activity used pre-filled balloons and quick-curing plaster to give kids the ability to quickly sculpt with their own hands, and paint the resulting form.

VIRTUAL LOOM Working within my existing knowledge of web-encoding languages, I developed a variation on traditional Canvas interactions. Using this, I was able to create a self-generating drawing tool based on a series of randomly generated variables. These variables include: the number of lines, lineweight, color, velocity, and direction. I also coded the lines so they bounce off of the frames of the webpage, and attempt to ‘avoid’ the mouse. This interaction allows the user to create their own composition based on the positioning of their mouse.

BRIEF Use HTML, CSS, and JavaScript languages to quickly create a unique, motion-oriented composition within a webpage.
