Expertise and Research Keep Ericsson Ericsson’s TEMS group is committed to being on the cutting edge of technological advancements. The pre-eminence of the TEMS portfolio in the market is driven by research, cooperation, and participation in the global telecommunications community. Through the expertise and hard work of the people within the organization, TEMS has become an acknowledged leader in the field, particularly in the area of speech quality measurements. One way we demonstrate this leadership is through our participation in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). This is an international organization within the United Nations System that meets to coordinate global telecom networks and services. TEMS currently participates in a study group within
the ITU’s Telecom Standardization (ITU-T) branch, investigating Quality of Service for end-to-end communications with a focus on objective Speech Quality evaluations.
Dr. Cotanis participates in this particular subgroup because of her expertise as well as our portfolio’s background as leaders in the Speech Quality area.
We are represented in the ITU-T by Dr. Irina Cotanis, a principal engineer whose extensive background in both theoretical and practical aspects of telecommunications makes her the perfect choice to represent TEMS in the ITU. Dr. Cotanis holds a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Wireless Communication.
Currently, the ITU-T is driving an improvement process for speech quality metrics throughout the industry. Being a part of this study group gives us a voice in how the new standards are developed and implemented. The new standards will improve the correlation between the objective standards and the subjective experiences of subscribers. This will make speech quality measurements more useful to operators than ever.
She spent seven years as a lecturer and professor on the principles of mobile communications. She then worked as a researcher in various aspects of wireless telephony before making the move to Ericsson TEMS in 1998.

TEMS Investigation CDMA can simultaneously collect data, scanner, and air interface measurements from up to four phones (including one configured as a modem), a DTI scanner, and a navigation device. This generates huge amounts of information that can be used to pinpoint, identify, and correct network problems. The challenge of presenting all this raw data in a useful, logical way has been met in a series of organized Views. The tool uses over 40 pre-defined views, many of which can be configured using filters, adjustable thresholds, and sorting features. In addition, Custom Views are also available to facilitate in-depth analyses. Together, these Views display data testing analysis, radio link layer measurements, air
