PROJECT 1

BIRKENHEAD BOTANICAL MUSEUM & RESEARCH CENTER

BRIEF REDEVELOPMENTMENT OF BIRKENHEAD

Create a masterplan which shows three design phases over the course of the next 30 years which can be implemented in stages to redevelop Birkenhead’s Industrial, Residential and Commercial sectors. Once completed choose a site within study area and propose a struture based on theme of masterplan that you think will improve the Birkenhead area.

LOCATION Birkenhead, England

A botanical museum to highlight key components of the planet’s ecology, biodiversity, and climate to the community and teach the citizens how to care for plant life in an urban setting. The Botanical Museum is to be designed as a cultural institution which occupies the interface between science, and public. As such, the intent is not just research but to create a hub that can offer unique insights into public understanding of scientific issues as it relates to plant life. The botanical Museum’s purpose would be to make sense of the science which shapes the lives of the people of Birkenhead thus helping create a scientifically literate society and inspire upcoming generations.

Site

Site is located near the habour which has been brought unto the site presenting a high commercial area which will attract tourist as well as locals near to the site The main pedestrian path through the site is adjacent to the site and creates easy access to the most dense residential area and the Birkenhead Park Site is located in the phase one zone of the site which constitutes predominantly mixed use buildings (commercial, institutional and residential) Dense population of residents within ten minutes walk Easy access to Birkenhead Park an the visitors center

I’m proposing a museum which is multi functional however, the main function would be research for biodiversity, taxonomy and systematics of plants, including bryophytes, ferns and flowering plants, all of which would be utilised throughout the site following the new masterplan based on urban farming. The structure would act as a landmark keeping with the understanding of how the area works. An additional function of the building would be the study of plants and fungi. This research will become a fundamental contributor to medical science, conservation, genetics, agriculture, food-web studies, soil science, climate studies, anthropology, and many other fields. The museum has a beautiful botanical garden and runs a wide range of courses, workshops, school visits and events for all ages.

PROJECT 2

MUSIC MUSEUM OF JAMAICA

BRIEF

THE GATEWAY TO KINGSTON

Create a new design for the Music Museum of Jamaica . A structure that celebrates the status of Kingston as The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Creative City in Music. The structure’s design program should include but not limited to Gallery/Exhibition spaces, Cultural hub, Library Facilities & Auditorium. The Music Museum of Jamaica is mandated to be the national archive for all of Jamaica’s music forms. It is envisioned that The Music Museum of Jamaica will celebrate the poetry, power and unifying force Jamaican music has on its people, the region and the world.

DESIGN INTENT

The intent is to attract and invite the community onto the site and create a space where they feel welcomed, comfortable and experience different emotions as the journey through the building ensues. Creating nodes and multiple “spill out” spaces for patrons of the surrounding communities to relax and enjoy the beauty of the coast gives expression to the design and thus views and interactive spaces are necessary in the design.

SECTION B-B

DESIGN CONCEPT

The concept of the design is to depict architecture as ‘frozen music’ creating a parallel art of harmonic and rhythmic order thus creating a structure that emerges as a suitable place for musical ornamentation, social interaction and diversification for the nearby communities. Expressive shapes and hierarchy will be utilized to demonstrate the transcendence and influence that music in Jamaica has had over the years, whilst linking the relationship between music and architecture as an abstract art form by incorporating rhythm, proportion and harmony in the design paying homage to the clear cultural lineage of music in Jamaica.

Architecture can be seen as the means to utilize the basic needs of human beings and the subtle variations of individuals as the source to create magnificent spaces that encourage unity between human vs. human and human vs. nature. Therefore, while designing this Urban Housing Complex, the main intent was to create spaces that encourage gathering of the residents of the community. However, it was also important for the residents to feel protected and have an element of privacy in their own spaces. Hence, the site is not entirely open but instead consist of niches in between the buildings that are intended for different activities. The spaces are protected by towering buildings, which act as a buffer from the noise offsite and COURTYARD create a cool microclimate that will encourage the use of the space at any time. It was also very important to design each building to guide natural lighting and ventilation in the interior spaces without decreasing the level of privacy for the residents. “The purpose of Architecture is to improve human life. Create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities in life. The infinite variety of these spaces can be as varied as life itself and they must be as sensible as nature in deriving from a main idea and flowering into a beautiful entity. The overriding essence is found in the intangibles, life–heart–soul–spirit–freedom–enduring within the structure.” STUDIO INTERIOR –John Lautner, Architect

PROJECT 5

GRENADA NATIONAL LIBRARY & ARCHIVES

BRIEF

CIVIC INTERVENTION

Demonstrate an understanding of the social context of St. Georges. Demonstrate technical knowledge of human climatic comfort, structures, materials and construction principles. Apply the design process in the creation of a design solution for the given site and demonstrate an ability to utilize graphic and model making skills in the communication of a design proposal for the Grenada National Library & Archives.

LOCATION St. Georges, Grenada

Design Intent The intent is to create a multifaceted building, which attracts the people of Grenada onto the site through the means of a comfortable, sustainable and expressive structure (identifiable as a landmark of the city of St. Georges). It is also intended to have a building that pays homage to the traditional design commonly preserved on the island while introducing complimentary modern styles, which maximize on climatic conditions present on the site. Creating multiple spill out spaces for patrons of the surrounding communities to enjoy the beauty of the landscape. The coast gives expression to the design, by affording the structure a dual function for the community(lookout) and also presents numerous opportunities for passive cooling. JOHN’S STREET ENTRY

Design Concept The concept of the design is to depict a contrast in Architecture, traditional vs. Modern. The concept therefore, affords a more modern style to be incorporated on the site paying homage to the traditional building style, while establishing a connectivity that links traditional to the modern style. This was accomplished through the strategic allocation of programs and external vertical circulation between the structures. Expressive shapes are also used to honour that which is traditional to the country (nutmeg spice)

Structure of exoskeleton for presentation Core and Outrigger Structural System. The Core walls of the building are reinforced concrete walls, which are the major structural load-bearing elements and they provide rigidity to resist deflection caused by strong winds. The External Frame
series are made up of steel columns located at the building’s perimeter, with steel beams connecting the steel columns to core walls. Steel bars are also used to reinforce concrete to add extra structural performance. The skin of the external frame is made from steel and runs five storeys on the northern facade and three on the southern and western façade in an effort to enhance the rigidity of the external frame making the structure more sound. Building load from columns on the upper floor is transferred down to fewer main columns (super / mega columns) through huge truss system and then down to the foundation.
