Making a Difference The world’s first digital computer was invented at ISU by John Atanasoff. Lipitor, the biggest-selling drug in history, was developed by alum Bruce Roth. George Washington Carver (pictured) was a world renowned plant scientist, who earned two degrees from Iowa State.
Academic facilities The Hixson-Lied Student Success Center (pictured) was opened in 2007. It includes space for academic tutors, a resource library, computer labs and study rooms. The Rod & Connie French Athletics Academic Center (second floor of the facility) is dedicated for student-athlete use only. It is conveniently located for easy access.

A great place to live With a population of more than 60,000, Ames is revered for its friendliness and its varied entertainment and cultural opportunities. Main street often bustles with parades and festivals (below) and Campustown (right) is full of shops and eateries, popular among students.
Beauty of Iowa State ISU has one of only three campuses nationally to earn a medallion (for its beauty) from the American Society of Landscape Architects. Iowa State is located minutes from an interstate exchange meaning that it is less than a day’s drive from Minneapolis (204 miles), Kansas City (208), Omaha (131), St. Louis (295), Milwaukee (290) or Chicago (307). The state capital -- Des Moines (pictured) -- is 30 minutes from central campus. Located in the heart of the midwest, Ames boasts a small-town charm with large city amenities nearby.

Entertainment options range from Big 12 athletics to Broadway shows; pop artists to comedy acts and dance recitals to operas. Steady Improvement In 2014, the Cyclones began a new era with the hiring of head coach Tony Minatta. The Cyclones banner 2013 season concluded with the second-highest finish ever in school history as the team earned the four seed in the Big 12 Championship. Iowa State built off its 2012 campaign, where the Cyclones grabbed the fourthmost wins in program history.
Brand-New Facilities In 2012, Iowa State announced the opening of the $13 million Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclone Sports Complex features a brand-new stadium, locker rooms press box, team rooms and easily accessible parking. The Cyclones can also practice at the $10 million Bergstrom Indoor Training Facility that opened in 2004. Iowa State finished fifth in average home attendance in the Big 12.
Supporting the Community The Iowa State soccer team won the Cyclone Challenge Award two of the last six years. The award goes to the ISU team that made the greatest contribution to the community. Five members of the ISU squad spent their 2010 Spring Break providing assistance to those in need in Haiti.
Academic Success In 2013, Iowa State had 14 student-athletes earn Academic All-Big 12 honors. Senior Jessica Reyes led the Cyclones, posting a perfect 4.0 GPA, earning First Team Academic All-Big 12 honors. Iowa State’s 14 honorees were the second-most in the Big 12.

Playing Professionally Since 2011 three Cyclones have continued to play soccer professionally. Mary Kate McLaughlin played for the Vancouver Whitecaps. Jordan Bishop was a member of the Boston Breakers organization. Elisa Berzins played professionally in Iceland.
