From the Publisher’s Desk...

Wow!

. The end of 2010! The years just seem to fly by. This year Today's Equestrian has seen a few changes. We are now a glossy color magazine and I think our layout looks great. I hope you are enjoying the beautiful color pictures. I'm so proud to be able to highlight all of our area’s riders and horses this way! I'm amazed Barbara still puts up with my busy schedule. She has the nicest way of reminding me that the deadline is approaching. She has now learned to give me a two week notice, then a one week notice, then a three day notice, then the final, “Today is deadline day!” Yes, it is true––I do a lot but I also need a gentle push (or a hard shove) to make sure deadlines are met! I hope you enjoy this issue. As always, we have some great gift ideas and some 2010 highlights. If you read my article (or if you read any dressage news whatsoever), you will know that the famous horse Totilas has been sold to Germany. Dressage has changed so much over the last years. Germany was always thought of as unbeatable when it came to dressage. Germany dominated the sport but now the tides have changed and it’s the Dutch. To see the world’s best horse be sold from Holland to Germany is quite shocking/stunning. Rumors had the price between 10-15 million euro! Some reports showed that Totilas' breeding income for one year was near 1 1/2 million euro. That's impressive! If you had a crystal ball 15 years ago I don't think anyone would have believed you if you predicted this. It will be interesting to see what becomes of Totilas now. At this point in time no rider has been named. Let's just say ticket sales at the show where Totilas makes his debut will be very good! I would also like to thank everyone for their generosity regarding Rick Albertson. Unfortunately, Rick had a bit of a setback but because of your kind donations he is being very well taken care of. Cancer is an awful disease and I'm hoping the next decade will see an end to it for once and for all. If you want to get into the holiday spirit and donate to a great cause at the same time, go to the Bone Marrow Foundation’s website (www.bonemarrow.org) and buy tickets for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular Event. Before the show they have a fun dinner for the kids where they can have their picture taken with Santa and the Rockettes. If you cannot make it to the show yourself, you can buy a ticket for a child with cancer and not only help this great cause, but share the fun of a great New York City tradition with a sick child. One of our area equestrians, Christina Merrill, is the head of the Bone Marrow Foundation and she works tirelessly to help people in need of transplants. I hope you never need her help but if you can support her by attending the show that would be wonderful. Another way you can help is by shopping at Long Island’s great shops in Manhasset as 25% of all sales will go toward this great cause. Everyone at Today's Equestrian would like to thank you for all of your support throughout 2010. I feel very lucky to live in such a great horse community. However you celebrate your holidays, celebrate them in a big, but safe, way. I once had a sponsor (who is still a great friend) who used to take us all out for a huge dinner every time we did well. I finally said to him, “John, you don't have to buy us all dinner every time we do well.” He replied, “You've got to celebrate the good times every time.”

Have a Great 2011! Ashley Holzer

What’s new around our region New Horse Trails in Manorville, LI

Suffolk County Parks Department has just opened new horse trails in the core of the Long Island Pine Barrens Forest Preserve. Named Manorville Hills County Park, the trails stretch throughout five miles of prestine countryside that meander through hills and valleys displaying bracken fern glades under towering pitch pine and oak trees. The trail is mostly soft sand covered with pine needles and is six to eight feet wide. Horses can be trailered into the parking area which has been paved with crushed stone. The parking area even has a mounting ramp with wheelchair accessibility for handicapped riders. The Park is located east of County Road Rt. 111 about three miles south of the Long Island Expressway at exit 70 and four miles north of Sunrise Highway at exit 60. Although the park can be enjoyed by all riders, permits must be obtained by both residents and non-residents of Suffolk County at locations at Sears Bellows Park, West Hills, Blydenburg, Cathedral Pines, South Haven, Theodore Roosevelt or West Sayville Main Office. HITS Announces Return of Million Dollar Grand Prix for 2011 Show Season

As the buzz from the first ever Pfizer $1 Million Grand Prix continues to penetrate the show-jumping world, HITS, Inc. is pleased to announce that it will continue its history-making, million dollar Grand Prix for the 2011 show season. HITS will host the event at its HITS-on-the-Hudson show grounds in Saugerties, New York on Sunday, September 11, 2011 as the grand finale to its 2011 show season. “I’m incredibly pleased with the success of the Pfizer Million,” said Tom Struzzieri, HITS President and CEO. “We set out to create a loyalty-type program for our HITS customers and at the same time raise the bar of competition here in the United States. As a result of the support we received from of our customers, sponsors, and the show-jumping community we were able to achieve both of these goals with this event. I’m excited to build from this momentum and use what we’ve learned from this year's event to help make it even better for 2011.” Once again, riders will need to bank eight qualifying classes to become eligible, and then the top 40 riders based on money won on their leading horse will earn their spot in the line-up for the class. Like this year’s class, HITS Management will have five additional spots to award to riders not otherwise qualified and a Wild Card Grand Prix class on Saturday, September 10, 2011 will provide the winner, if not already qualified, a final slot. The HITS 2011 show schedule will include 56 Grand Prix classes. The HITS Ocala Winter Circuit will offer riders 14 qualifying opportunities, while the HITS Desert Circuit will host 16 qualifiers, four of which are FEI World Cup Qualifiers. 14

The HITS Arizona Winter Circuit will feature six qualifiers. During the 2011 spring and summer show season, HITS Culpeper will offer five Grand Prix qualifiers and HITS Saugerties will provide 15 opportunities to qualify. All HITS Winter Circuit Prize Lists are available at www. HitsShows.com. Ω

Country Riding Shop Moving

The Country Riding Shop in Setauket, Long Island, is moving––but not too far. The shop, which has been serving the equine community for over 47 years, is just shifting over to the left of its present location to make room for a commercial bank. All its regular merchandise and stock will be available, as will its friendly and helpful staff that Long Islanders have grown to depend on when making purchases for both horse and rider. Although there may be a short interruption due to the move, Debbie Moore, owner of the shop, says they will certainly make up for any inconvenience by offering a great sale from November 26 to December 3––just in time for holiday shopping. The store is located at the intersection of Rte. 25A and Bennetts Road in Setauket, Long Island. Ω

EMMA SCHAUDER WINS NATIONAL PHA MEDAL FINALS

The early evening of Friday, September 24, 2010 saw Emma Schauder, 15, of Greenwich, Connecticut ride to victory in the National Professional Horsemen’s Association of America Medal Finals. Once again, hosted by Old Salem Farm, the class was contested by the top 30 riders, based on points, over the past year. The finals class is conducted in the same format as the class is throughout the year in that a test is built into the course. Course designer, Daniel Fitzsimmons, challenged the riders with a counter canter jump that required careful planning in order to hold the counter lead and a trot jump that proved to be more difficult than it appeared to be. Emma and her mount, Let’s Win Again, did just that. They negotiated the course seamlessly making it look effortless. Judges Carolyn Vincent and Lynn Peters were impressed enough with her effort to put her in the top spot. Training with her mother, Christina Schauder as well as Beacon Hill Show Stables and Stacia Madden, Schauder has had a very successful 2010 show year. In her second year of qualifying for all of the medal finals, Emma was Reserve Champion of the CHJA Master’s Medal Finals, 4th in the Zone I Maclay Regionals, 13th overall in the USEF Talent Search Finals (placing 2nd in the flat phase out of 90 riders). She also was the recipient of the Margot Graham Moncure trophy at the Fairfield Westchester PHA June horse show which is awarded to the rider with the highest score for an equitation ride over fences. Emma also competes in the jumper division aboard Ah Ha. Together they were 4th in the $15,000 Children’s/Adult Jumper Classic at the Manchester Classic and were 4th in the Marshall and Sterling Children’s Jumper Finals. Schauder and the other top eight riders received scholarship monies to further their equestrian education. When she is not riding, Emma enjoys spending time with her friends as well as reading, writing and watching Vampire Diaries and Glee. Her dream is to one day compete in a hunter derby. Looks like she’s well on her way to that dream! Ω

Lakeside, NB native Denielle Gallagher-Legriffon led the Canadian riders to victory at the NEDA Fall Festival CDI-W Y/J Saugerties, held in Saugerties, NY, September 16–19, 2010. Denielle did not have to travel very far for this victory as she is located at Ramapo Equestrian Center in Suffern, New York where she teaches upper level dressage. Her husband, Bertran Legriffon. is head trainer and manager, specializing in jumpers. Denielle and Abrikos, her 19-yearold Russian Warmblood stallion, earned the pair’s first Grand Prix victory of their career when they captured first place in the Grand Prix Special. Denielle and Abrikos also finished fourth in the Grand Prix. “Earlier in the week, our Grand Prix test went really well, but during the Special, Abrikos was really focused and on my aids. He performed all the movements very well during the test,” Denielle said, who is the first rider hailing from New Brunswick to win a CDI Grand Prix Special test. “I am very excited and happy with him. We are now focusing on Dressage at Devon.” Ω

Drill Team at Twin Lakes

Last year Twin Lakes Farm in Bronxville, NY expanded its activities by adding a drill team. Currently the team has a dozen members preparing for a December performance. The Twin Lakes Drill Team was the brainchild of Liz Tarter who owns the barn with her husband, Scott. “It’s an exercise in team work,” she said. “It’s nice in so many ways for the riders to do something as a team.” Co-captains Erika Johnson and Ashley Olin agreed. “I enjoy being a part of something, said Johnson who is a captain for the second year. Olin noted, “It’s you and your horse and you’ve got to work with a larger team.” Johnson and Olin are responsible for inspecting the school horses used in practice, ensuring that each team member cleans and puts her horse away correctly. “Each team member is responsible for caring for their own horse,” stated Liz Tarter. Choreographer is Twin Lakes trainer Kristina Anderson. After the team’s fifth practice session, she said, “They’re doing a good job, they’re having fun, and they’re good at remembering the patterns.” Anderson, a native of Sweden, is a former professional ballet dancer. Olin feels that this background helps her in creating the artistry of the movement the team performs. Ω

Move over, Ben Affleck, there’s a new mule kickin’ in your wife Jenn Garner’s stall. Or rather, a chestnut horse, Mr. T, owned and trained by Dutchess County’s Rex Peterson. ather those you love around the table and the barn this holiday season and let’s look back on a year that included hosting the first World Equestrian Games in the USA, and cheering on our own Ashley Holzer and Pop Art!

The lovely young ladies of JustWorld International held a private screening in New York City on October 11 of the fabulous new flick, Secretariat (a fave of Ashley H’s too). In attendance were Gabby Hero, Brianne Link, Isabel Ryan, Allie Tofflon, Alexa Effron, Alex Crown, Sydney Shulman, Gabrielle Bausano, Aleesha Malwani, and Katherine Strauss. The private screening, at the oh-soRegal Union Square Stadium 14, donated 100 percent of its proceeds to JustWorld. Now that’s what we call a winner!

A little bird tells Stella that quite the gathering of horsemen old and new is expected March 5 when Rutgers University hosts an IHSA show and celebration of its New Jersey riding team’s history. Coach Kelly Francfort is putting the call out to all RUET alum of previous Rutgers University equestrian teams to please contact her as she plots a special celebration.

Have you heard about the other horse at Tina Konyot’s Connecticut dressage barn? While Calecto V wow’ed ‘em at WEG, Tina hopes to give a five year-old OTTB (off-the-trackThoroughbred) a second chance at life: “So many nice Thoroughbreds are out there. Many can go on to have wonderful lives as dressage horses, hunters, jumpers or eventers.” She says the horse, Vegas Lord, came through Racing Hall of Fame trainer (and boyfriend), Roger Attfield. “Vegas Lord came from Europe and just needs a new avenue. He is beautiful, and a nice mover, and will be a great project for after the World Equestrian Games.” Another Calecto V? “We will have to see what discipline he takes a liking to.”

Good & Plenty

A certain Hilton was predisposed to saying “You are not on The List,” and now the North American Riders Group has introduced its own “preferred course designers” list. “We believe that collaborative efforts between show managers and exhibitors create positive change for all involved in show jumping,” says NARG president, Chris Kappler. Fourteen FEI and 11 USEF Licensed Officials have made the NARG list. Who’s there? See for yourself: www.NARG.org

Our U.S. Secretary of State in spurs? Hillary and Bill Clinton have been shopping for a new, more private residence than Chappaqua. According to the Journal News, they’re eyeing a Bedford property that includes stables and a riding ring. The Penn National went oh so healthy! Show publicist Marty Bauman (who never seems to age) was eager to let riders know that Centerplate featured breakfast bars, fresh fruit and vegetables, salads, soups and six different healthfilled sandwiches. There’s no margin for error in breeches so it’s good to see show calorie counts go down.

Arianne Zucker plays mischievous Nicole Walker on the TV soap opera, Days Of Our Lives. but in real life, she’s devoted to her horses, Syracuse (rescued from an auction and nursed back to health from a series of injuries) and Belgian Grand Prix mount, Albatteh. She certainly doesn’t need a script to describe how riding “feeds her soul.”

Here’s an argument for stilettos – to keep your feet in the stirrups, of course! 16th century marauding horsemen likely introduced the idea to Europeans, inspiring men to wear high-heeled boots while riding, until comely French queen, Catherine de Medici, borrowed the idea to boost her own short stature. “Once something becomes popular among women, men stop using it,” said Margo DeMello, author of Feet and Footwear. Back off from my Manolo Blahniks, cowboy. Ω

Red Oak Farm Hosts Charity Horse Show

On Sunday, October 31st, Red Oak Farm. Stirling, NJ, hosted the Third Annual Kickin’ Childhood Cancer Charity Horse Show to benefit the Valerie Fund Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders at The Children’s Hospital at Monmouth Medical Center. It was a fun-filled family event featuring equestrian competition, a hunter derby, silent auction, pony rides, food, crafts, a raffle and toy drive, all of which helped to raise more than $20,000 for the Fund. Sisters Sandra Siliato and Bethie Dayton co-chaired the show in memory of their brother, Jimmy Walters, an avid horseman who died of childhood cancer at 15 in 1974. At Red Oak Farm, the entire farm family pitched in to support the event. Dayton, head trainer there, feels it is important to involve her students in their fundraising activities in order to “teach them about the privilege of giving.” This includes her own daughter, Libby, 19, a sophomore at Rutgers University, and Autumn, 9 years old and in 3rd grade, the daughter of Siliato. Libby and members of the farm’s Junior Committee raised additional money by braiding the manes and tails of the show horses. Parents and other volunteers solicited donations of food, baked goods, and other services as well as donated items and gift baskets to be used in the silent auction. A highlight of the day was the hunter derby, won by Remi Heller of Short Hills, New Jersey on her horse, McJagger (see Show Shots). The Halloween Costume Class was also a hit. Diane Douglas, a freshman equestrian team member at nearby Centenary College, came home for the weekend to

help Libby oversee the efforts of the Junior Committee. Training with Dayton for the past 7 years, she and Libby have worked all three of the Charity Horse Shows soliciting gifts, setting up for the silent auction, and assisting in running the actual show. “It has been immensely rewarding for me. Not just having the show run well and getting lots of entries, but knowing that we actually helped.” So much time and effort goes into this one-day show. It has taught Diane Douglas and all of the other students at Red Oak Farm that there are many ways in which young people can get involved to help others. “I am so proud of these young kids for stepping up and Autumn Siliato, 9 years old, gave up a day trying to make a of trick and treating on Halloween and difference”, said instead volunteered at the Red Oak Farm Dayton. A NEW ERA OF HORSE FEEDING

Winter Riding

I keep my horse at home and have limited access to an

indoor. I'm dreading winter. What

would you suggest I do to help keep

my horse fit and schooled through the winter so we can start showing in the spring without too much catch-up time?

A.

Wow that's a hard one. If you keep your horse at home and

have limited access to an indoor ring

O RGANIC H ORSE F EED

over the winter, I have two suggestions:

One, you put your horse in a barn

that has an indoor ring so you can

ride him on a regular basis. If this is not a financial possibility, then my second suggestion would be to put

snow pads and some borium on his

shoes and plan to ride outside all winter or get his shoes drilled and

tapped. This way you can screw in caulks in both his front and hind

shoes and ride him outside or ride flat footed when you have a chance to ride indoors.

You can keep your horse fit doing

power walks and trotting. Cantering will build his endurance, but power

walks and trotting are the best way to keep your horse fit. Ω

Horse Show Dogs of the Month

mma Brandow and her Mom, Liz, had a great time with their family dogs at a recent Long Island horse show, sporting their pooches in Halloween E costumes. Cody, a 3-year old male, came dressed as a bumblebee (left) while

Casey, 2, was true to her gender as a ladybug. Both dogs are Jack Russell terriers, “and very playful,” Emma said. The dogs get along beautifully, playing hide and seek together, although they do have individual interests. “Casey is a good hunter and brings us big surprises,” said Liz, “while Cody loves to jump and play soccer.” But whatever their separate passions, both dogs seem to thrive on the excitement of horse shows. This may sound crazy but what is a "half halt" exactly and how does it benefit my horse?

Answer

First of all, I try to keep everything as simple as possible for my students and horses. A half halt is used to displace more weight over the hind end of the horse, which in turn balances it and allows them to be prepared and ready to perform what is being asked of them. I use the image of a teeter-totter with one side of the teeter-totter being the head of the horse, and the other the back end. If weight drops down in front you have to realign it by placing some weight back to the other side for it to be in balance. Having lived in Germany for a long time, I speak German. The word "halfhalt" in German is "halbe parade." The way they use the word "parade" really helped me understand the whole meaning of half-halt. They use the word "parade" not to always come to a complete "halt" but for a downward

the "whole" transition to walk or halt. This can also be done at the canter once the rider is very coordinated and balanced at the other gaits. It does take time to make this adjustment so the half halt looks almost invisible, but with practice and clear aids it will become easy. Ω

Ask Ashley

transition. They would say, "parade" to walk if you were in trot and needed to go to walk, or parade to halt if you were in walk. This made me visualize the half halt as half (or any fraction of), a downward transition. I say, "any fraction of" a downward transition because a half halt can be thought of as 1/8 of a downward transition, or 3/4 of a downward transition, depending on how much balancing your horse requires! I simply tell my students to start a clean downward transition. Once they can do that, I ask them again for the transition but instead of doing the whole transition, I tell them to simply ride on again, as soon as they feel the transition beginning, and the weight of the horse transfer to the hind quarters. It does take a bit of timing and a control of your body! To help them with the timing, I play the "red light, green light" game. When they are trotting, I simply say "red light" and as soon as I see the horse distribute his weight correctly, I say "green light" and they ride forward again. The amount (or intensity), of the half halt then depends on when I say "green light." This fun game really shows riders how to easily affect their horse's balance. If the horse gets too strong and doesn't listen to the aids, I simply make them do

Training an Off-The-Track Thoroughbred By Olivia Rutigliano, 15 years old

R

Bethpage, NY ecently, curiosity has spiked about adopting off-the-track thoroughbreds. For some, adopting a thoroughbred causes the concern of racing injuries and the rehabilitation and retraining that some horses may need. If willing to spend the time working with these horses, thoroughbreds can become excellent show horses. On the show circuit, it is becoming more common to see ex-racehorses successfully showing in jumpers, equitation, and the hunters. Last April, after years of wanting another horse, I adopted a four year-old, 16.1 hand thoroughbred named Lunaticonthegrass. I literally pulled him out of a field and loaded him on the trailer. Knowing that this horse had little to no training as a riding horse, everything I did was done with extreme caution. But the longer I had him I began to realize how quiet and sweet he was. As time went on and I got to know my horse, I loved him more and more. With the help of my mom, an experienced rider and some natural horsemanship techniques, Luna changed from skinny and scruffy to an impressive sport horse. As great as he is, we did go through the ups and downs. Early training was frustrating at times like teaching Luna his leads or jumping through lines. Being gelded later in his life, Luna also had dominance issues over things like food. Winter was a challenge. The cold weather and icy ground was difficult with such a young, green horse. We decided to move to an indoor after the first heavy snow storm when Luna became a handful and the ground was just too slippery and dangerous to ride on. Being in an indoor helped tremendously just because I was able to ride. Having Luna a year now, he has grown to almost 17 hands and has filled out well. He goes hunter pacing and foxhunting. Being as quiet as he is, my younger sisters ride him all the time. Over the winter, I showed him in small indoor schooling shows in both the hunters and jumpers, pinning in every class, including a few blues. I have jumped him bareback and bridle-less.

Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

He’s a horse my whole family loves. Due to a minor injury, I did not show Luna through the summer but look forward to showing indoors this season. Having Luna and being through so much with him has proven it a challenge at times but has been such a great experience. It’s amazing to know that I have had such an important role in every aspect of his training from ground work to his first steps under saddle to showing him. I feel a sense of accomplishment knowing that I didn’t just get on a push button show horse and ride but went through the struggles

of owning a completely green horse. It has created such a bond between us. Luna has become part of the family. For those out there looking for a horse, do not overlook off-the-track thoroughbreds. They can be extraordinary riding horses. Ω Juniors! Do you have a horsey experience you would like to share with our readers? We’d love to hear from you! y favorite horsey holiday memories occur each winter, during the closest snow to Christmas. A herd of my students and I go trolloping through the snow on horseback over the 180 acres of Hunters Crossing. This is a lot of fun and I look forward to it every year.” Ω

President, NJPHA Trainer, Summerfield Farm, Pittstown, NJ USEF Learner Judge, working toward "r" certification or many years, just before New Year's Day, we used to hang a sign up in the barn announcing our Annual New Year's Day Holiday Ride. We would gather our horses up in the trailers and head to Jockey Hollow for a big trail ride, followed by a huge tailgate party in the parking lot. We always had the best time. I think I should resurrect that tradition this year!" Ω

rable horsey holiday was the year I received my first horse, Rosie. When I got her, I was thrilled and it was one of the best things that happened to me in my whole life. I remember the day I got her. I was at a Baymar Farms Horse Show and I got my first grand champion in the Mini Stirrup and they announced my name and said I was the new owner of Rosie. We have a wonderful bond. She's my girl, my favorite horsey gift.” Ω

y most memorable Christmas of all was when I was 14. My parents decided to finally buy me a horse. They came to grips with the fact the horses were not just a phase. The right one came along just before Christmas. She was the best present I could have ever imagined! A green 5 year-old chestnut mare, four white socks and a blaze. She was so flashy and so lovable! My mom, who is not involved with horses at all, even loved her. She kept petting her, telling me she had the softest nose! We ended up having a great partnership and show career together." Ω

“M

y most memorable horse-related Christmas.....that’s a tough one because my family always complained that I was never around for the holidays because of the horses! But I remember one year in particular when the girls at the barn and I had a fantastic dinner celebrating the season wearing leis and hitting a piñata in Florida! We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating Christmas in the heat.”

Ed Note: Courtney continues to progress in physical therapy following an accident that resulted in a head injury and coma last March. She is thrilled to be riding again on therapy horses, saying, “Yep, those therapy horses are true gems. We all have things we were meant to do. Dressage horses are meant to move fancy, but these horses were meant to take care of people. They both need, and deserve, our love.” To keep abreast of Courtney’s progress, visit her on Facebook or on her website at www.CourtneyKingDressage.com. Ω

A Rider’s Viewpoint

T

By Ashley Holzer

Dressage

The Opening

The competition opened with a huge ceremony that included outstanding equestrian and artistic performances as well as a few surprises. They even had Muhammad Ali make a round of the arena in a beautiful old car! The performance that stood out in my mind was Stacey Westfall. All I can say is WOW. If you don't know about this lady, she rides her horse through the reining pattern BUT without a saddle or bridle! Hurry, go to Youtube and take a look! After seeing that, I felt like a bit of a beginner! Eitan Beth-Halachmy, known for his Cowboy Dressage routine, wowed the crowd, but as he exited the stadium, he slumped off his horse. The staff did a great job of quickly attending to him and the show went on without a glitch. I was delighted to hear the other day that Eitan is no longer in critical condition and it looks like he will be able to ride again. Thank goodness this is now happy news!

he World Equestrian Games were spectacular. Held at the Kentucky Horse Park, the huge facility hosted endurance, reining, vaulting, driving, dressage, jumping and the Para Games. People from around the world gathered in this place, where the horse truly is king, or queen! The site was world class although the only detraction was the size of the facility and lack of transportation. If you were one of the lucky ones to obtain a golf cart, you certainly had a lot of friends during your stay! Those of us who didn't came away with great memories and a trimmer physique. The latest reports show that an impressive half a million (507,022) people attended. That's a lot of people! It was aired worldwide on the web and TV. NBC covered over 8 hours of this great event. I have competed for Canada at many international competitions but this one was special. My experience was memorable. My horse peaked at the right time and my 8th place result is the best I've ever had at a World Games. What made these Games so special were the fans. To ride with your fans supporting you is indescribable. I couldn't believe it when I woke up the next morning, still on cloud 9 from my horse's performance, to hear, "You won't believe what's on the front cover of the newspaper!” It was a picture of fans in the stands, holding up a sign, cheering me on as

I entered the ring. Let's hear it for the fans! They cheer you on when you need it the most and rally behind you when things don't go as well as planned. The attendance at WEG shows how many supporters our beautiful sport has. I would love to recap everything that happened at WEG, but that might need too many pages, so I will just summarize what I found were highlights as a competitor. Some are great, and some are unfortunately sad.

“What made these Games so special were the fans. To ride with your fans supporting you is indescribable!”

Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

It was then onto Dressage. The first upset came when extremely successful Jerich Parzival, ridden by Holland's, Adelinde Cornelissen, was eliminated during the Grand Prix test, when the judge observed blood in the horse's saliva during the halt and rein-back. Unfortunately, the horse had bitten its tongue, and even though the amount of blood was minimal, the rule is very clear when it states that any blood appearing on the horse is contrary to the horse's welfare and results in elimination. A picture of the tongue later showed how tiny the spot was. How terribly sad for poor Adelinde. She was out of the competition. Being a great competitor she didn't pack up and go home. She was there to cheer on her Team and we saw her at the Para Dressage ring lending a hand. The sold-out dressage freestyle was electric. USA's Steffen Peters aboard Ravel was on fire, as was England's Laura Bechtolsheimer and Mistral Hojris, and the famous Dutch combination, Edward Gal and Moorlands Totilas. I'm sure most of you reading this article know who Totilas is and if you don't, get back on Youtube immediately and take a look. This horse/rider is so spectacular anyone can recognize it. When I first saw this combination in Hickstead, England, my 10 year-old son remarked that I should buy Totilas as soon as possible. When I asked why, his comment said it all. "Mommy, You will NEVER beat THAT horse!" Totilas brought the crowd to their feet in Lexington, too. The stands were filled with people from every discipline wanting to get a glimpse of this magical horse. He did not disappoint. To watch this horse is truly breathtaking. The judges even joked, "There's Totilas, then there's everyone else!" The one thing that WEG will be known for forever is that it was the last performance for Totilas and Edward Gal. Just after the WEG, the rumors were rampant that Totilas would be sold, and just a few weeks later the rumor was confirmed. Moorland's Totilas was sold to Paul Schockemoehle of Germany. To this date no new rider has been announced but it does feel like a bit of an end to what was so good; it was almost surreal. What the future will bring for this wonder horse we will not know, but for those who had the gift of watching Steffen Peters and Ravel him and Edward, he will performed to a bronze medal remain unforgettable. for the USA.

Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

The final medals were: Edward Gal with the gold, Laura Bechtolsheimer with the silver and Steffen Peters with the bronze. (I think that was the first time ever that Germany was not in the dressage medals. A sad day if you were German!) I had to leave after the dressage but due to the extensive coverage on the FEI website, NBC, and the wonders of texting, I was able to feel like I was still there.

Eventing

The eventing crowd arrived in droves! My friends who drove from Canada parked themselves by the water jump at the crack of dawn to get the best spot. My husband even stayed to watch a bit of it. This time Germany won the individual gold. Michael Jung made the cross country course look like a nice hunter round! Britain did end up with the Team gold and CANADA with the silver. (I just want to give a shout out to David O'Connor, Canada's coach. for a top notch job.) New Zealand came away with the bronze.

Diana Berthold

The first day of competition started with Endurance. What actually impressed me the most was the medal presentation the day AFTER the 100 mile event. To see these medal winners tear around the stadium like they had been on a light hack the day before was inspiring. As this was going on, so was the Reining. Olympic Dressage champion Anky Van Grunsven traded disciplines at these Games and showed up on the Dutch Reining Team where she put in her personal best! I find that pretty impressive! Needless to say, Team USA took the gold medal, but don't they always? They've won every Team competition since it was introduced at WEG 12 years ago.

A rider walks the Rolex water jump on the Eventing course.

Vaulting

Talking about making things look easy, the vaulting was amazing. These people make me FEEL stiff. I can't imagine doing what they do on the ground, let alone on top of a horse! Winning the Team gold was the USA, led by Devon Maitozo, while British gold medalist Joanne Eccles needs to thank her family a lot! Her dad is the longueur and her sister the coach. Not sure how that works so well, as I can't imagine my kids ever training each other, yet it obviously does! Switzerland's Patric Looser beat his coach and won the Individual Men’s gold medal. I bet his next lesson might have a lot of sitting trot without stirrups (or flips without even a harness!)

Now on to jumping. Germany again came away with a gold medal, this time in Team Jumping. France brought home the silver and Belgium the bronze. On Germany's team was US born Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum who is a good friend and an unbelievable rider and MOM. Meredith just had a baby a few months ago! Who says you can't do it all? The individual medal final in jumping is very different than any of the other discipline's finals. The top four riders have to not only jump the course on their own horse, but they have to switch horses and jump the course for a total of four rounds each. That makes it exciting, to say the least! Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum This final proved rode on the German gold medal that the jumping team––just a few months after world also has a having a baby, who seems to be superstar. Well, having a great time at the WEG! actually two superstars! Eric Lamaze's Hickstead, cleared EVERY single fence, in EVERY round, with EVERY rider that day. Unbelievable. Some horses are amazing! Belgium's Phillippe Le Jeune did the same thing! He didn't knock down ONE fence in all four rounds. That's pretty special! Phillippe came away with the gold, Abdullah Al Sharbatly from Saudi Arabia the silver, and Eric Lamaze the bronze. Rodrigo Pessoa finished a close fourth on the Harrison family's wonderful horse HH Rebezo. What a night!

Pop Art

Driving

The driving had now begun and people were on the course cheering like crazy for Tucker Johnson who ended up with a bronze medal around his neck. Second was Ljsbrand Chardon from Holland. The winner (with a broken left hand, may I add) was Australia's Boyd Exell. Boyd had broken his hand in a riding accident a week before. Some people just persevere!

The Para Dressage Championships

Talk about perseverance, the Para riders are phenomenal. I don't even know where to begin. If it was up to me they should all get medals. Really big medals. Germany and Great Britain dominated the freestyle medals in all grades. At the press conference for the 15 medalists, the athletes spoke of their incredible partnership with their horses and appreciated the recognition these Games gave them as athletes. Gold medal winners included Germany’s Hannelore Brenner on Women Of The World (79.20%) in grade III, Germany’s Dr. Angelika Trabert on Ariva-Avanti (75.90%) in grade II, Great Britain’s Lee Pearson on Gentleman (82.50%) in grade Ib, and Great Britain’s Emma Sheardown on Purdy’s Dream (78.55%) in grade Ia. The grade IV freestyle concluded the Para Dressage World Championships and saw Great Britain’s Sophie Wells on Pinocchio (78.50%) who won the gold while Belgium’s Michele George on FBW Rainman (78.05%) earned the silver medal, and bronze went to Frank Hosmar and Tiesto (77.25%). They are all truly inspirational. As WEG concluded I feel lucky to have been a part of this event. I always feel it is important to thank my tremendous sponsors and supporters: Purina, Farm Vet, Ecogold, Samshield, SSG Gloves, Back On Track, Meadowbrook Horse Transport, Holly Jones, Lindsay Kellock, Dr. Meg Mullin, Dr. Brad and Carolyn Amery, Tom Tadeschi, Dr Geoff Vernon, Evi Pracht, Rolex, Diane Fellows, Robert Dover, Equine Canada and, of course, my dear friends and my wonderful family, especially Emma, Harry and my understanding husband, Rusty. Lexington, Kentucky

Home of the WEG and Horse Lover’s Ultimate Destination! By Diana Berthold The World Equestrian Games for me was an unbelievable once-in-a-lifetime experience and so much more. The thrill of it all took my breath away with great horses, people, demonstrations, vendors––and to think I was there in the midst of it all was like something I never would have imagined! Besides the Games themselves, I had the opportunity to visit several of the surrounding places of interest. Here are some of them:

Claiborne Farm, Former Home of Secretariat

Claiborne Farm is one of the most famous of the many thoroughbred breeding farms located in Kentucky and has been in the Hancock family for four generations. Reservations must be made in advance in order to be admitted to a tour of this fabulous farm, and we were fortunate to have been given the opportunity by a vet who services this farm. Since people wanted to see these beautiful places, learn more about the horses and the industry, the many breeding farms worked together on the idea which resulted in the creation of the Kentucky Horse Park since these farms found it hard to accommodate visitors in the middle of their busy operations.

hooves, and claim their great health not to the Kentucky blue grass, but the limestone beneath. Nearly two hours flew by as Tony shared the history of the farm, horses, and his experiences in thoroughbred racing in an exciting and even humorous way. Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom visited Claiborne Farm twice. The farm currently employs about 80 people and in the past up to 150. When Secretariat was syndicated for 32 shares at $190,000 per share, it was unprecedented and did not even guarantee a live foal. Just this year, the farm will guarantee a live foal with their contracts and those five men are responsible for the stallions to be bred three times a day during breeding season. Mares imported from other countries are the last to be bred in the season. Claiborne Farm is where the great Secretariat, 1973 Triple Crown winner, was conceived, though not foaled, and he was buried in full body in an oak casket, and his tombstone is adorned with one dozen fresh red roses. Many other famous thoroughbreds have been buried there as well. Bold Ruler, Mr. Prospector, Round Table, and Swale are just a few of them. Last year, in Paris, the first Secretariat Fair was held and the winner, whose horse most resembled Secretariat, was awarded $5,000. The owner had just bought the horse the previous month and after seeing the horse, Walt Disney Studios purchased the horse for the movie Secretariat.

In the Countryside

In the southeastern Appalachia Mountains in Irvine, we stayed in a 150+ year log cabin at the Snug Hollow Farm on a beautiful 300 acre farm with Barbara Napier, innkeeper, and vegetarian cook extraordinaire. She has stories to tell, great food for breakfast and dinner, music, and a cook book where she shares her wonderful stories, recipes, photographs, etc. I was neither a vegetarian nor a cook, but have been both since I returned home. Not far from there is a place called Berea, which is considered one of the top 25 art destinations in the country and the capital of the arts in southeastern United States. As a horse woman, artist, quilter, and musician, I felt like I was in heaven. In Berea, you can visit the many artists’ studios and also their work at the Artisan Center on RT I-75. Kentucky proudly displays “Quilt Blocks,” made of two large plywood sheets, painted in different quilt block designs, mounted on many of the old large dark barns along the roadways and especially on the music highway RT 23.

On display in Triangle Park, across from the Lexington Convention Center, were lifesize horses such as a Sea Creature (right), and a Quilted Horse (below). Far Bottom: A 975 pound horse made entirely of chocolate was on display at the Lexington Convention Center.

How My Trip Began

Six weeks before the WEG my best friend called from Florida and told me that we had to go, that it was an opportunity of a lifetime since it was going to be held here in the United States, and she was not going to take no for an answer. Each of us had just experienced our ultimate health challenge of a lifetime and here she wanted to plan something that I thought would be impossible since arrangements for travel and lodging for these games were made quite some time ago. With the huge crowds, it could have been a bit daunting, but it was an amazing adventure and the organizers had it well orchestrated. I watched Ashley Holzer ride Pop Art in the Dressage segment, and followed the riders along the spectacular course in the Cross Country Event. I am so glad to have had this great adventure with my best friend, stayed in such a wonderful place where I could inhale the culture and the breathtaking scenery. Where else can you drive and see one beautiful horse farm after another, or the wonderful scenery in the mountains, and meet such interesting people? It was great to see people of many nations waving their flags as they supported their athletes here in our great United States. As much as I didn’t want it to end, I was so inspired that I couldn’t wait to get home to work in my quilt and art studios, share my story with my husband, children, and friends, and see my own horses even though they may not have won medals or races. Ω

The University of Kentucky and Lexington Convention Center

We were greeted by Tony, who is one of the five men who run the breeding operations and is responsible for the three stallions that he presented to us during our time there. ....Eddington, the massive mahogany bay that stands with great presence, resides in a stall which bears the plaque of other famous past residents such as Secretariat. Pulpit, the fresh chestnut, son of Preacher, is his neighbor across the aisle. Lastly, Arch, the bay with the white blaze that has a craving for peppermint (red ones, not the green ones), can be found down the aisle from Eddington. These very valuable stallions are bathed every day, spend most of their time outside without blankets, are not given supplements with the exception for their 50

We traveled to Lexington to see the special art exhibit at the University of Lexington, and the Lexington Convention Center. Main Street was closed due ticket sales at the King Theatre for the red carpet treatment for the premier of Secretariat that evening, October 3rd. The University of Kentucky had a collection of works on loan and a special exhibit by Polish artist Andrew Pater who traveled to Kentucky and made his home there. There you could view his famed pastels of jockey silks from Keeneland, as well as oils of horses, dogs, and livestock. There were vendors in Triangle Park, which is across from the Lexington Convention Center. Along the streets were the fabulous lifesize fiberglass horses painted Going in Circles, Quilted Horse, a village landscape, a sea creature, and many others. At the entrance of the Lexington Convention Center, we were greeted by the extraordinary aroma of a 975 pound chocolate cake horse which also boasted its incredible recipe which included 320 pounds of confectionary sugar and 70 pounds of chocolate and that was just some of the ingredients for icing! Inside were lifesize bronze sculptures, art from around the world (even Mongolia), a mechanical horse demonstrating riding lessons, and more. Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

GREAT

GIFT IDEAS For

HORSE LOVERS

For the Rider

P Keeping warm this winter, whether at a show, schooling at home, or riding the trails, will be a cinch with the specially made riding wear from some of our favorite manufacturers. Kerrits has a line of winter breeches that are fleece lined, as does Ariat, and are available at your favorite tack shop. P Arbitrage Tack is excited about their new line of Fuller Fillies which are breeches and show shirts designed for the rider with the fuller figure. The breeches are cut wider at the hips and waist so the rider does not have to purchase a larger size and have to deal with breeches that are much too long. The breeches are $80 and up and the shirts, also cut wider, start at $65. P Ride like Steffen Peters, or at least train at home like the WEG double Bronze medalist, using the same Eponaire One Way Pro cordless headset he and wife Shannon love using because of its easy conversion for use with public address (PA) systems. If eventing is your thing, you're in good company with several WEG riders who relied on Hit-Air Safety Vests, which expand like little air bags if you happen to fall down and go boom. P For a fun fashion statement, the savvy equestrian could match her horse this year with a line of matching attire by Joules. For the rider there are jackets and vests, with coolers and quarter sheets for the horse in the same plaid. Available at Neptune Feed and Saddlery from $48.99 and up. P To keep your hands warm and comfy this winter––and looking great––a gorgeous collection of Signature Gloves for riding are available at Heart & Soul Tack. Made of leather with knit palms and velcro straps, they come in lots of colors or you can customize your own. They are perfect for either schooling or showing because of their flexible fit. $75 and up. Gift cards available so your rider can choose her own color combination! P Have you seen the great looking riding gloves by Lilo? In black leather, they are adorned with a silver bit and are chic enough to wear even when you’re not at the barn. $69.99 at North Fork Saddlery. P New this year from Ariat is a line of great looking belts. They are designed with either a simple spur or go all the way to bling. From $30-$50 at The Tack Shoppe. 52

P For the rider who wants to show up at the barn or a horse show in classic style, Equestrian Outfitters has a beautiful wooden grooming box with a reproduction of a George Stubbs painting on the side. It is a beauty, and only $40. P A great idea for a stocking stuffer for your rider would be a couple of those disposable foot warmers that go into boots. They really do their job for a day, and then toss them away. At only $1.49 a pack, you can pick up a couple at Country Riding Shop. P They say don’t look a gift horse in the mouth, but you will certainly have trouble taking your eyes off the great gift selections at www.HorseBaskets.com. This website company offers dozens of different gift baskets for everyone on your holiday list. For instance, there are gift baskets for show days, for leather care, for grooming supplies, a new foal, a new horse owner, and oh, so many more! Standard and expedited delivery is available, guaranteeing that your rider will receive her decorated gift basket in time for the holidays. P For those into fox hunting, Horse Leap in Amenia, NY, specializes in vintage and new fox hunting riding attire for men, women and children. The shop also has new and antique whips and other hunt appointments. P You won’t believe all the great gift ideas at www.EngravingSpot.com! From those popular leather bracelets and belts with engraved plaques of horses’ names, to the more practical tack trunk and halter plaques, there’s something for every horse owner. Owner Jody Rogers prides herself on fast delivery, so be sure to check it out!

Just for Women

P For unique fashion jewelry, check out Heart & Soul Tack which proudly offers a hand-crafted line of Catherine Canino jewelry. The pieces are created from mother-of-pearl from the Pacific Seas and enhanced with stirrup hooks, horse shoes, and other equestrian details. Bracelets, necklaces and earrings run $100-$300. P..For the gal on your list who loves Indian jewelry, Equestrian Outfitters has two huge display cases of silver and turquoise bracelets, rings, earrings, and necklaces from $4 to $200. P If you or your rider are hooked on sterling silver jewelry, check out Horse Leap’s great selection of vintage bracelets, pins, earrings, necklaces and rings, all with horse motifs. Priced from $19 and up, they make great stocking stuffers. P A beautiful selection of ladies’ scarves with equestrian themes can be found at North Fork Saddlery. In assorted colors, they are the perfect fashion accessory. $39.99. P A fabulous line of equestrian-themed handbags is available at Rider’s Choice. The bags are faux leather with embroidered horses, horse shoes, etc. All prices. P A full line of gorgeous equestrian handbags by Rebecca Ray Designs can be found at Heart & Soul Tack. The bags have images of horses, dogs or foxes, and are equipped with blanket snaps. They are crafted from fabric and micro-suede and are totally customizable. $325-$500. So popular was the collection last year, that Heart and Soul is now carrying keychains and belts from Rebecca Ray, starting at $50. P If you’re a fan (or collector) of Coach Handbags, you can find vintage and gently used ones at Horse Leap. The shop also carries used Etienne Aigner and Dooney & Bourke bags, from $20 to $60 each. P. Horse people never have enough equestrian-themed sportswear, and Little B has addressed that this year by ordering tons of funwear for women and kids in all sizes. Choose from t-shirts with either long or short sleeves, as well as sweats––all in great horsey designs. For men, too! Starting at $20 and up. Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

P For the horse show dad who has a sense of humor, a cute selection of sweatshirts with funny horsey quips can be found at Arbitrage Tack. They come in all sizes and are $25 and up. P If your guy (or dad) is special, then he deserves something special.....like a golf car! For Kids

P Every little girl (or not so little girl) loves a music box, and Country Riding Shop has quite a collection to choose from, all with horses, of course, and starting at $10. P Breyer Horses and accessories are always on top of the list for kids, and every year a new horse joins the Breyer herd. This year look for Chester Weber’s Jamaica. P Keep in mind that Breyer also has a smaller version of horses and accessories that have a smaller price tag as well. In fact, The Country Riding Shop will put together a customized gift box of the miniature Breyer models and accessories for under $50. P Because Breyer horses never really get old, you can even pick up some used ones. Add to your youngster’s collection for those she’s missed and are no longer in production, or give the toddler on your list a chance to play with a couple at low, low prices. Only $5 and up at Horse Leap. P And don’t forget to keep the kids’ feet warm and dry this winter. The Tack Shoppe has great looking rubber muck/rain boots in two different horsey patterns for $40 a pair. Team them up with toasty warm horsey fleece socks, also in horsey patterns, for $6.95 and up, and you won’t be able to get your kid out of the barn. P For the child or teen on your list who loves photography, get her started with scrapbooking, a hobby she can enjoy for the rest of her life. Arbitrage Tack has horsey scrapbooking pages that are totally inspiring and fun. This new shop also has lots of other fun gifts: sticker books, rubber stamps, puzzles,

With most items priced under $20, they also make great gifts for kids to exchange with their friends. P Some kids can never have enough plush horses and if you have (or know) one like that, you’ll find a great selection at Equestrian Outfitters, from only $6 and up. P Don’t overlook a chance to spruce up your youngster’s room with great looking sheets and quilts from Arbitrage Tack. in a choice of either a galloping horse or hunt design. In pink with a pony appliques, they are priced $20-$40,at Arbitrage Tack.

For Everyone

P Regardless of your riding discipline, all horse people love donning a cowboy hat. Little B Barn specializes in cowboy hats and boots and has probably the largest selection in the east for men, women and children from all the leading manufacturers. To make sure you give the correct size, you can purchase a gift certificate. P Another shop with a large selection of cowboy hats for everyone is North Fork Saddlery which run in price from $35$49. Closer to home, GSO can bring their design work inside, too, to create the barn of your dreams P Snuggle up with a good read this holiday season with the third edition of For the Love of the Horse by our own staff member, Ann Jamieson. Acclaimed as “a little gem of a book” by Practical Horseman, the stories are bound to uplift your spirit and give a deeper appreciation of the horse. Three volumes are available at $17.95 each or get the set of three books for only $45. Give Ann a call and she will autograph them for you! www.LoveOfTheHorseBook.com

For Your Trainer

P One of the most thoughtful gifts you could give your trainer this year (or any other year) is a horse show photo taken at a favorite show. P Next, head out to The Tack Shoppe to pick up a decorative horsey picture frame to put it in, either in metal or wood. They come in all sizes and are priced from $15 and up...and the wood ones can even be personalized with a brass plaque. P ..We heard about the most perfect trainer gifts from The Clothes Horse. Only about $100 which includes monogramming, we guarantee your trainer will love it!

Shopping for the (Picky) Dressage Rider

Let's face it. We are not called Dressage Queens for nothing! To say we tend to be on the "picky side" might be an understatement. Yes...we really do care if the circle is exactly 8 meters, and the shoulder-in stays on 3 tracks the entire time! So call it a job hazard. We are picky. Normally this doesn't affect our personal lives too much, but when it comes to gift giving, I've heard the odd frustrated comment, "She's impossible to get anything for. If I buy a horse book it’s always the WRONG horse book!" So I've decided to help out and give you some great ideas for the dressage royalty on your gift list! Ashley Holzer

The Jumpline Designs Dressage Letter Bracelet or Ring from Centerline Jewelry

We may be detail oriented but somehow those dressage letters and their placement can all get the best of us. Who came up with those silly letters that often rhyme, making the poor people reading the test at the show the brunt of the dinner conversation? "I never would have gone off course if she had said B (not E or C or D or G) more clearly." These beautiful pieces of jewelry actually show the dressage ring so there's no reason to frantically search for the test book when having to set up your dressage ring correctly! Crafted in stainless steel, the rings come in sizes 6 ,7 and 8. Bracelets have a seamless clasp. www.JumplineDesigns.com

Fits Dressage Breeches

These breeches are super comfortable––and let's just say a comfortable dressage rider is a happy rider! These unique breeches have leather areas but not the typical full leather seat. These segmented patches allow for stretch where you need stretch! I've tried them out and I highly recommend them. I was worried I would feel the seams or that the material under the leather would feel too thick. I was proven wrong. The seam-free, gusseted crotch is also pretty fabulous but that might be TMI! They are very nice to ride in, even when you have to ride for 6 hours! Oh, and did I mention that they are very slimming, too? At your favorite tack shop or visit www.FitsRiding.com

A Riding Helmet

Finally dressage riders are coming to their senses and donning helmets. In Canada they have made them mandatory in the warmup ring, and the FEI went as far as to say that they recommend the use of safetyapproved helmets in dressage warm-up areas! I love the Samshield helmets for the show ring. They are beautiful and truly horse show worthy. I have a blue suede one to match my blue tailcoat and a black one to match my black jacket. They are truly stunning and designed with the latest technology that addresses most rider complaints: sweating and headaches. The helmet’s incredible airflow addresses the sweating problem, while headaches and red marks are prevented because pressure is eliminated on the front of the head. The use of memory foam for the side and top padding provide an amazing and surprising comfort. Another bonus is that the inside insert is removable and washable.

Der Dau Boots

If you want to do the "made to order" thing at its most luxurious, visit Der Dau and get some made-to-order boots. These boots are works of art and are made in Brooklyn, New York. At Der Dau your imagination can run wild. They have everything from your typical black show boot to the wildest fashion boots that will make people drool on Madison Avenue! If you do a rush order they might even have them ready for the Florida circuit!

A Horse Show Kit

DAV Rain Boots

This takes a bit of effort but it will be greatly appreciated. Get a small makeup bag and put in those things riders are always running out of at shows: Maybelline waterproof mascara, sunscreen, safety pins, travel size hair spray, tissues, lipstick, bobby pins, hair elastics, Advil, 10 bucks for lunch, and a shiny penny for good luck!

Everyone needs rain boots, but have you seen the DAV Victoria Rain Boots? I love the ones that lace up the back. They have a soft fleece lining and have the shape of true riding boots! Perfect for mucking around at the dirty barn and then looking dapper while picking up a few groceries!

Apple iPod Shuffle

With a new iPod shuffle, dressage riders can load their freestyle music and listen whenever their hearts desire. These small devices make practice easy. Clip it to your jacket, put in the ear plugs, put on your helmet and off you go! If you order online at Apple.com, you can even get it engraved for free and look like a real hero!

Perfect Riding Gloves

Face it, we are always losing them and we have to ride in them. You may think riding gloves are a little boring so to jazz it up a bit, do what I do. I buy the SSG gloves and have my initials embroidered on the wrist band. It looks great and tends to keep people from walking away with mine by mistake!

Airline Tickets

Make a Photo Book at www.shutterfly.com

If you've never been to Shutterfly.com, you are missing out. Simply upload your pictures to this site and watch the magic start. You can make calendars, cards, invites, stationery, etc. but the real prize is the photo book. Unfortunately they do take a bit of time to put together, but once you've got the hang of it, the result is beautiful and lasts forever. The quality is excellent and they are delivered quickly. A very personal and touching gift (as long as there is a picture of a horse in it)!

Photos, photos, photos!

This is a bit of a splurge but how about airline tickets to Wellington, Florida for the Dressage Masters being held February 3-5 at the Winter Equestrian Festival? Check out Jet Blue, American, Delta or Soutwest for direct flights from the New York area to Palm Beach International (PBI).

When all else fails, you can't go wrong with a picture of your rider’s horse. Call it crazy but dressage people like looking at their horses even when they are not riding them! If you are not short on time, you could email the picture to www.usps.com and have the picture made into a sheet of postage stamps! Practical and fun! Or, if you’re short on time, put the photo in a frame and tape on a nice card and you will have done well!

Happy Holidays to Everyone!

News from Sacred Heart U Team

Where are they now? Meet Dr. Duncan Peters

Duncan Peters graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1972 with an honor unique among his classmates: he was the first college rider to win the IHSA Cacchione Cup. The trophy recognizes the top hunter seat rider at the annual IHSA National Championships. Peters was a special guest of the IHSA in May 2010, when he attended the Nationals and a special retirement ceremony for the original Cacchione Cup, to the International Museum of the Horse at the Kentucky Horse Park, and unveiling of the new trophy, designed by Kate Capley. He didn’t have to travel very far to confirm his RSVP. Today, the IHSA inaugural champion is best known as the FEI-accredited Dr. Duncan Peters, DVM, director of the Hagyard Sport Horse program, in Lexington, Kentucky. Founded in 1876, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is one of the oldest and largest equine veterinary practices in the world and offers a staff with qualifications unparalleled by any single non-university veterinary group. The Sport Horse program cares for clients in the area and horses that come to compete at the Kentucky Horse Park. Hagyard has developed a system where its veterinarians work with each horse's primary veterinarian and keep an open line of communication between the two practices. Dr. Peters also has FEI Veterinary duties. In 2009, 64

Randi Cashman Named IHSA Rider of the Month

Congratulations to Randi Cashman who was spotlighted earlier this season as IHSA Rider of the Month on the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association's website home page, www.ihsainc.com. Randi, who is from Highland Falls, NY, is majoring in Equine Business at Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ, and will graduate in 2011. She competes at IHSA shows in Open Equitation on the Flat, Intermediate Equitation over Fences, Open Western Horsemanship and Reining. What does she love best about IHSA? "Being a part of a team and the lifelong friendships I have made." Does the Cashman name ring a bell? Dad, Peter Cashman, coaches the IHSA team at West Point (and last year received the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award, too). The most recent IHSAinc.com Spotlight belongs to Charmaine Tan, who rides in the Walk-Trot-Canter Equitation classes for the Cornell University IHSA hunter seat team. Charmaine, who is from Singapore, will complete her studies in Ithaca, NY in 2012 with a degree in English. Until then, she'll keep enjoying her favorite things about IHSA: "Traveling to horse shows and the amazing horses we get to ride." Ω

Sacred Heart University (Fairfield, CT) coach Dawne Wilson reported that her IHSA equestrian team took part in a pair of events October 15-17, showing real "heart" for cancer awareness, turning in strong performances at the IHSA show at UConn, and hosting nine teams at SHU's first IHSA home show, at beautiful River's Edge Farm. On Saturday, October 15, 2010 the team traveled to the University of Connecticut (UConn) for their first IHSA horse show of the season. The SHU Pioneers turned in an outstanding performance, earning Reserve High Point Team! SHU earned a pair of first place finishes from junior Alyssa Woronik (Salem, CT) and freshman Margaret Vogel (S. Acworth, NH). Sophomore Molly-Kate Carven (Amesbury, MA) and junior Abbie Britton (Hoover, AL) earned second place finishes. Britton picked up a third place finish along with junior Brian Buchanan (Troy, NY). Senior Janel Beauregard (Cumberland, RI) brought back a sixth place as well. On Sunday, October 17, 2010 the Pioneers hosted their first home show of the season at River's Edge Farm in Bethany, CT with nine programs from across Connecticut in attendance! The Pioneers took home five first place finishes at the IHSA Hunter Seat event. Abbie Britton took a first place for SHU and finished in a five-way tie for Reserve High Point Rider. Woronik, Carven, freshman Danielle Belson (Westhampton Beach, NY) and senior Alessandra Lyons (East Northport, NY) also took home first place finishes for SHU. One of the most entertaining––and inspiring––parts of the day was no doubt the "Stick Horse Relay Race" where riders and spectators "Cantered for a Cause" around the ring during the show's lunch break with half of the money raised being donated to breast cancer research. Ω

he oversaw the HITS Desert Circuit’s four World Cup Qualifying Grand Prix events and four additional FEI grand prix classes. FEI veterinarians are responsible for the veterinary care of FEI horses, follow veterinary regulations throughout an event, and work with managers, stewards, judges, and course designers to ensure equine health and wellness. An avid, lifelong horseman, Dr. Peters specializes in performance horse management programs and therapies that keep equine athletes healthy and at the top of their game. “With the numerous resources available at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute, and the expertise of its veterinarians, we have been in a unique position to build an excellent program,” he says. Equine champions, cared for by a collegiate champion, sounds like the right prescription. Ω

Highlights

October 2 - 10, 2010 Upper Marlboro, MD

Children’s Hunters

The Capital Challenge Horse Show

In the $9,000 Amateur-Owner 36 & Over Hunters, Jane Gaston and Lumiere led the way to victory. Their championship came from two firsts and two seconds over fences in the division. The team was also named Grand AmateurOwner Hunter Champions. Ellen Toon and Invincible were the reserve champions. Jane Gaston has owned Lumiere, a nine-year-old Oldenburg gelding, for five years. “He's part of our family now,” she said. “He's just progressed from Baby Green and Pre-Green all the way up to being an old guy now.” Champion in the $9,000 Amateur-Owner 18-35 Hunters was Sunny Moon, ridden and owned by Jaime Auletto of Blackwood, NJ. They won two over fences classes (including the final handy stake class) and placed fifth for the top tricolor. Tracy Scheriff Muser and Donovan were the reserve champions with first, second, and sixth place ribbons over fences. Melissa Feller of Lincoln Park, NJ, was able to hold off strong competitors in the ARIAT National Adult Medal Finals for victory. “It was fun; there really wasn't a lot of pressure. It was just for fun because this horse has never really been anywhere. That made it easier. I had to give him a nice ride,” she said. Feller finished second two years ago and was sixth last year in the class. This year, she rode a green six-year-old horse, Tamber Bay, and without expectations she remained cool and collected Feller rode Tamber Bay for owner Pamela Mahoney this year in various ARIAT classes to get him experience in equitation classes. When she was without a horse for this year's Finals, Mahoney let her show Tamber Bay. “He's only six, so he hasn't done anything,” she reiterated. “He

hadn't shown before they bought him. He's a real good boy. He'll jump anything. He was a little starstruck in the indoor, but he didn't care about the jumps or anything like that.” Feller believes that her trainer, Robert Beck's, belief in flatwork and equitation work at home has helped her. “He's firm on position. Our jumper and hunter riders do lessons with no stirrups all the time,” she described. “In our indoor and our outdoor rings there is always an equitation course set up that even our hunters do, with bending lines and rollbacks. He makes us pretty well prepared.” Going into the final round, Feller was leading over Tracy Mack-Gorin, who would finish second by 3.95 points with Fernway Park. Darby Mazzarisi and Lion King finished third. Ω

The Amateur Divisions

Colvin was also victorious in the $9,000 Medium Pony Hunters. She and Ever Luvin, owned by Scott Stewart, were the champions after they placed first and second over fences. The reserve champion was Macy Grey, ridden by Meredith Darst for Wild Sky Farm. Meredith Darst received the top tricolor in the $9,000 Small Pony Hunters with Elation for Dr. Betsee Parker. They placed in every class, with two firsts, a second, and a fifth over fences, as well as fifth under saddle. The reserve championship went to Ballou, ridden by Daisy Farish for Victoria Colvin. Ballou and Farish won the EMO Pony Hunter Trip of the Show when they scored a 91. The Stewart Warner Cup for a pony rider went to Emma Kennedy, given in memory of Laurie Gilbert Stewart and Mary Warner Brown, by Donald E. Stewart, Jr. and Louise W. Serio. This award is given to up-and-coming junior riders who, in the opinion of the panel of judges, exhibit the best hunter style and show potential as a young hunter rider. Ω

The Grand Pony Hunter Championship and the Large Pony Hunter Championship went to For the Laughter, ridden by 13-year-old Victoria Colvin and owned by Dr. Betsee Parker. The reserve champion in the division was Center Field, ridden and owned by Louise Graves. Victoria Colvin also won the Best Pony Rider Award and she was presented with the Kitty Borisoff Memorial Trophy donated by her many friends. The Professional Hunter Divisions

As usual, John French and Scott Stewart led the professional hunters taking championship honors in most divisions. Among John French’s victories this year were: Champion of the Second Year Green Working Hunters with Small Affair owned by Iwasaki & Reilly; winning the $15,000 WCHR Professional Challenge on Small Affair; and winning the Future Hunter 3'3” championship with another Iwasaki & Reilly-owned horse, Small Collection. Scott Stewart won two divisions in the Future Hunters. He rode his horse Inclusive to the championship in the 6 & Over division, and his own Passionate to the top tricolor in the Mares division. Scott Stewart captured his fourth win this year in the WCHR Professional Finals, presented by the John R. Ingram Fund. Stewart persevered through four rounds against the five other best hunter riders in the nation to set the record in the 18-year history of the class. Stewart has been in the WCHR Professional Finals eleven times, and this is his fourth win, more than any

The Pony Hunters

The Children's Hunters competed in the outdoor ring and the Grand Championship went to Mactier, ridden and owned by Bella Cramer. They won the division championship in the Children's Hunter 15-17 division after they won both over fences classes and placed second under saddle. Cramer was also named the Best Children's Hunter Rider. The reserve champion was MTM Halo, ridden and owned by Micah Gentry. They were second over fences and second under saddle. The Children's Hunter 14 & Under champion was Best Of, ridden and owned by Gabriella Conte. They won an over fences class and tied with reserve champion Escara, ridden and owned by Paige Weisberg. A hackoff decided the championship. The Children's Hunter Pony division finished with the championship going to Crimson Sky, ridden and owned by Chelsea Cohn. They placed first and third over fences and third under saddle. Cohn bought “Sammy,” an experienced hunter, three years ago. He was the first pony she tried and Cohn “fell in love.” Cohn’s trainer, Cynthia Williams, said, “They bonded immediately.” Cohn has ridden at the Capital Challenge before but never with this pony. She said of her win, “It is a very big honor and I’m Chelsea Cohn and Crimson Sky really excited about it.” The reserve champion was Ramblin' N' Gamblin', ridden by Bernadette Louise Chungunco, owned by Iain Robins, who won an over fences class. The Stewart Warner Cup for Children went to 12year-old Victoria Press of New York, NY, who also won WCHR Children's Hunter Challenge on her horse Notoriety, owned by Lexi Maounis. Ω

Meg O’Mara and Mianta

Meg O'Mara and Mianta sped to the winning place in the $15,000 North American Junior/A-O Jumper Challenge sponsored by Ariat. Fifteenyear-old O'Mara has only ridden Mianta, a top grand prix horse previously ridden by Callan Solem, for the past three months and has picked up the ride on her and other horses owned by Carol Thompson of Quiet Winter Farm. O'Mara said of Mianta, “She was really hard to get at first. She's really hot and is very specific. You can't fight with her. We've gotten to a point

(now) where we flow together.” O'Mara also won the Best Junior Jumper Rider Award along with the ARIAT Congressional Cup. Regarding her win, O'Mara expressed, “It's amazing to win here. Last year I watched the High Juniors and thought, 'I don't think I'll ever be able to do this.' I thought maybe in two years I could start. Now that I've been riding Carol's horses, it's really stepped me up a level.” Seventeen-year-old Samantha Selldorf of Farmington, CT, piloted Rocket Man, a seven-year-old Belgian Warmblood gelding, to a time of 27.100 seconds to win the $10,000 Children’s/Adult Jumper Challenge. Close behind in second was Meredith Darst on Hidden Creek's Kendall, who crossed the timers in 28.708 seconds. Taylor Ann Adams rode Power Point to third place with a time of 29.020 seconds. Samantha Selldorf won the Leading Children's Jumper Rider Award. The Best Adult Amateur Jumper Rider Award went to Elizabeth Kirby. Ω

other rider in the history of the class. He joked after the class that he would retire from the finals now, but the other riders had a hard time believing that he would live up to that promise. He remarked, “It’s really an honor to be included in this great group of riders. So it’s nice to stay at that level and to keep up and try to put your best game on.” In the $10,000 Regular Working Hunters the championship was awarded to Rosalynn, owned by Mr. and Mrs. Ernest M. Oare and ridden by Kelley Farmer. They were first, first, and second over fences and finished sixth under saddle. Lone Star, ridden by Hunt Tosh and owned by Dr. Betsee Parker, was the reserve champion with a first, two seconds, and fourth over fences and fourth under saddle. Farmer also swept the Future Hunters–Colts and Geldings division, with a championship on Amadeo, owned by Louise Graves, and reserve champion with Ashton Chewning's On the Hour. The Future Hunter–Five & Under champion was Triton Z, ridden by Kate Conover and owned by Redfield Farm. Habana, owned by Spencer Ranch and ridden by Farmer, was the reserve champion. Ω

With a blue in the $3000 A/O Jumper, Time First Round, and a second in the $15,000 Cavalor Show Jumping Hall of Fame Classic, Danielle Cooper from Syosset, Long Island, and Kosta galloped away with the championship in their division. Danielle also earned the Leading Rider Award for Amateur/Owner Jumpers sponsored by Mr. & Mrs. Gary E. Swenson. Defending champion Rodrigo Pessoa of Brazil reclaimed his title winning the $75,000 Grand Prix de Penn National, an FEI World Cup Qualifier, the finale of the 65th annual Pennsylvania National Horse Show. He was victorious aboard HH Ashley, the entry of Double H Farm, with a jump-off time of 50.37 seconds, and although there were no jumping faults, the pair did have one time fault. An incredibly challenging course by Steve Stephens proved to be the biggest adversary for the 25-horse field with riders representing six countries. The tie-breaker was even more challenging and provided an entertaining climax for the large and enthusiastic crowd. With seven horses in the jump-off, Pessoa was perfectly positioned as last in the order of go and no one ahead of him was fault-free. "I didn't get to see the jump-off but I kept hearing the scores: 20, 12, 8, 4, which was unusual," the former Olympic and World Champion said. "It's always nice to go last. When I saw the draw I was relieved, but I still had to get through the first round. It was nice not to have to go crazy fast for my greener horse in the jump-off," he said of his 10-year-old Hanoverian mare. "It was an advantage and I'm very happy with how she jumped. Beezie Madden and Coral Reef Via Volo were fourth to go and pulled a rail at the second of nine obstacles, but even with four faults and a time of 46.25, she finished in second place after Rodrigo rode his clean round. In third place was Star Power and Ian Millar. Fourth was Top Gun and Kent Farrington. HH Ashley's caretaker, Caroline Holmberg, was also awarded for her efforts with the Caretaker of the Winning Grand Prix Horse award, a prize she won last year as well. Additionally, Pessoa was named Leading Rider for Open Jumper division. Beezie Madden won the Leading Lady Rider Award for Open Jumpers and she and Coral Reef Via Volo won the Open Jumper Championship. Pessoa and HH Ashley were Reserve Champions. Ω

Zone 2 Triumphant in Prix de States Team Championship

The four team members from Zone 2 (NY, NJ, PA) came to Harrisburg with the intention of winning, and that is exactly what they did. With seven of their eight trips clear, Katie Dinan, Reed Kessler, Meg O'Mara and Karen Polle made it look easy. The riders from Zone 2 led the way all night, but they were closely followed by last year's Prix de States Champion, Zone 10 (CA, NV). For Zone 2, Meg O'Mara aboard Sinatra IV, Karen Polle aboard Cachette Z, and Reed Kessler aboard Flight all pulled off double clear rounds. Katie Dinan aboard Vancouver was clear in the first round, but tired in the second round to end up 16 faults. With Dinan's second round score dropped, Zone 2 had a final score of 0 faults to clinch the $15,000 Randolph College/USEF Prix de States Team Championship. Ralph Caristo, Zone 2 Chef d'Equipe, said "I've got great parents, great kids. There's a great support system in our zone." This support system was made evident by the numerous, and colorful, posters throughout the complex and the bright face paint on each team member's cheeks, as well as on many spectators’ cheeks. Each time a Zone 2 rider finished a course a loud cheer went up from the stands. The riders from Zone 2 all agreed on one thing: "Ralph is the best Chef there is!" Kessler, 16, of Armonk, NY, said of Flight, "I've had him forever, I love him." Polle, 18, of New York City, NY, has had Cachette Z for about a year and said "she's been so amazing, she knows exactly what to do, and she helps me out a lot." Dinan, 16, of North Salem, NY and O'Mara, 16, of Rumson, NJ, also had nothing but great things to say about their mounts, Vancouver and Sinatra IV. The course was very challenging for these juniors. Out of 59 trips around the Steve Stephens designed course, there were only 18 clear rounds. The biggest challenge on course were the three one-strides, with fences 3A and 3B proving to be especially difficult, resulting in more than 20 knockdowns throughout the night. This was the 32nd year of the Prix de States competition being held at the Pennsylvania National Horse Show. Each zone across the United States may field a team of four for the Randolph College/USEF National Junior Jumper Championships. The top four horse-and-rider combinations in the zone's National Junior Karen Polle aboard Cachette Z, winners of Junior Jumper Jumper standings Individual Phase 1 and memqualify to represent bers of Prix de States their zone in the Champion team, Zone 2. Hayley Barnhill Wins Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Equitation Medal Finals Presented by Randolph College at Penn National

A total of 208 junior riders came to the 65th Pennsylvania National Horse Show and competed for the prestigious national equitation championship, the Pessoa/USEF Hunter Seat Equitation Medal Finals Presented by Randolph College. It came down to a ride-off and exchange of horses between Hayley Barnhill of Collierville, Tenn. and Samantha Schaefer of Westminster, Md. that resulted in the win for Barnhill. The first round of competition challenged the 208 riders with a straightforward course which judge George Morris said was often decided by the first fence and a bending line that was mis-walked by many riders who miscalculated the inside track. Twenty-eight riders were called back for the second round and jumped in reverse order with Schaefer entering the ring first and Barnhill following behind fourth in the order of go. Seven riders then returned to hack off, and afterwards Barnhill and Schaefer were asked to remain in the ring. Judges Julie Winkel and George H. Morris tested the top two further by asking them to dismount and remount on each other's horse, then jump the second round course they had jumped earlier. Neither girl had ridden the other's horse before. "They were dead even in the finals - this really separated them. Sam got stuck at the first jump on Hayley's horse. Hayley set the pace - really - she nailed it. Both girls rode fantastic. It was a tough decision - that's why we had them switch," explained judge Winkel. "Both riders did a tremendous job executing, as well as being stylish. You could tell they've ridden a lot of different horses. Their experience 72

really showed today." "The first and last fences are the most important fences in any class. We were looking for the first fence to be ridden according to the horse... These two riders were far above the rest, we didn't want to mix them with the others," Morris added of the decision to test the top two. Molly Braswell finished third, followed by Lucy Davis who finished fourth. Chase Boggio turned in a fifth-place finish, and Shawn Casady rounded out the top lineup in sixth. Barnhill said, "The change of horses was very nervewracking. I was nervous about the getting back on part. Her (Samantha's) horse is a little lazier than mine (to ride), then I kind of figured it out." Schaefer added, "When I had to do the switch, I didn't realize we'd have to get on (the other horse). It was like going from a pony to like a Clydesdale. We're used to trading, we're hunter riders." Barnhill's winning training team included David Pellegrini, Missy Clark, John Brennan, Tom Wright, and Tim and Kelly Goguen. Her winning mount, Podest, was named Best Equitation Horse. Ω

Washington International Horse Show McLain Ward and Sapphire Triumph in $100,000 President's Cup Grand Prix, CSI 3*-W

Other Jumper Highlights

The $25,000 Puissance sponsored by The Boeing Company is always one of the most anticipated classes of the year at the WIHS. This year was no different as Pablo Barrios (VEN) and G&C Blanchee Z, owned by G&C Farm/Gustavo and Carolina Mirabal, cleared a height of 6'1” for victory. In the second round, they were the only horse and rider team to go clean. With four faults each in the second round, second place honors were split between Andrew Kocher (USA) on Babaganoush, Aaron Vale (USA) and Alegro 95, and Shane Sweetnam (IRL) on Traffic Boy. Since there were no other clears in the second round, the competition was officially over. “I was disappointed; everybody is always expecting to see a bigger wall and I was really surprised to win in just the second round,” Barrios said. Kent Farrington and Up Chiqui put in a thrilling speed round to win the $30,000 International Open Jumper class. Margie Engle (USA) and crowd favorite Hidden Creek's Pamina L, owned by Hidden Creek Farm, were just behind in second place in 54.48 seconds. Rodrigo Pessoa won his third class of the show on Friday afternoon in the $15,000 International Open Jumper 1.40m faults converted class. He and Palouchin de Ligny were lightning fast in 49.72 seconds to take the top prize. Marilyn Little-Meredith (USA) finished second in 52.01 seconds with Cordia de Laubry, owned by Raylyn Farms Inc. Third place went to Hillary Dobbs (USA) and Marengo, owned by The Dobbs Group. Ω

Hillary Dobbs, dressed in costume as "The Flash" aboard Marengo, rode to the second place ribbon during the always colorful and exciting $20,000 Gambler's Choice Costume Class. Rodrigo Pessoa won the class, dressed in an authentic Formula One racing outfit, complete with helmet. His jumpsuit, signed by Formula One World Champion Mika Haakinen, is something that usually hangs in his home, but he brought it out for this special class. Georgina Bloomberg placed 6th, dressed as a nun. The 3rd Hillary Dobbs as “The Flash” in the place ribbon in Gambler’s Choice Costume Class. the costume class went to Shane Sweetnam, who partnered with Dobbs to win Saturday night's $15,000 Open Jumper Pair Relay. Sweetnam rode Spy Coast Farm's Allisson. Ω

The $10,000 Children's Jumper Championship opened up jumper competition at the WIHS, and 11-year-old Katherine Strauss of Southampton, NY, led the victory gallop on Caretino. The class had 32 entries, and 10 of those were clear to advance to the jump-off. Strauss and Caretino put down a clear round in a time of 32.120 seconds to take the win over Thunderbay and Alexa Boggio, who finished in 32.468 seconds. Rose Borzillo piloted The Flying Dutchman to third place in 32.789 seconds. Strauss has been riding Caretino, a 12-year-old gelding, for almost two years. “Tino was really great. We have been working hard all year and it feels great to finally pull it together. He was reserve circuit champion at WEF, but this is the first really big win and this is my first time at Washington. It is really fun; it is cool that it is in the city. It is really exciting to be here.” Ω

The $100,000 President's Cup Grand Prix presented by Washington Convention and Sports Authority, CSI 3* was an exciting example of the sport of show jumping and a qualifier for the FEI World Cup Finals in April. Two-time Olympic gold medalist McLain Ward of Brewster, NY, and Sapphire, owned by Ward and Blue Chip Bloodstock, came away with the win in the highlight class of the 52nd Washington International Horse Show (WIHS). Sapphire and Ward repeated the success that they had in 2008 in the grand prix at the WIHS when they were the fastest clear round in a jump-off of seven. There were 24 entries in this year’s grand prix class. Ward explained, “I thought my horse jumped beautiful in the first round. It felt very smooth. In the jump-off, I decided to do the four up at the end of the ring to the oxer and it got a little farther away than I had anticipated. It felt a little rough just for a few strides there, but when you have a partner like Sapphire you don’t have to be 100%. She is 110%, so she makes up for a lot of my mistakes.” Ω

Today’s Equestrian November/December 2010

In her second year competing in the WIHS Equitation Finals, Lillie Keenan, 13, rode impressively through three rounds for victory. Adding to the unbelievable finish as one of the youngest riders to win the class is the fact that she had only ridden her mount Uno, owned by Madeline Turner, for two weeks. “I'd never sat on him before Harrisburg,” Keenan said. “He's got Lillie Keenan and Uno on their such a big stride, and way to winning the WIHS he's so automatic. You Equitation Finals have to control yourself from doing too much because he wants to do everything for you. You have to stay out of his way and let him do his job. I can't thank the Turners enough for letting me ride such an amazing horse. It was really gracious of them.” Keenan went into second place in the opening hunter phase with a score of 88.67 behind Molly Braswell of Ocala, FL, on The General, who scored a 89.67. In the jumper phase, she and Uno were consistent and took the lead with a score of 88.17. For the third round, the top 10 riders came back and switched horses. Braswell was still in second place and came back on Baheera, the mount of Victoria Birdsall. She earned scores of 87, 87, and 91 from the three sets of judges for an third round average of 88.91 and a three round total of 265.082. The highest score in the third round was set by Michael Hughes of Allandale, NJ, who rode Dynasty, the horse from Hayley Barnhill. Their average of 89.666 helped them rise three spots in the final order. Hughes' three round total was 259.832 and he finished in third. Keenan was the final rider in the ring and she rode Massimo, the horse owned by fellow competitor Chase Boggio. Massimo, who stands 18 hands tall, was quite a different mount for the petite-framed Keenan. “I was a little nervous,” she admitted. “He's huge, but I knew he would march right around and he would deal with everything perfectly. I tried to be as smooth as possible and leave the horse alone. He felt very different from my horse, but he knew exactly what he was doing. He's a lovely, lovely horse.” The judges awarded Keenan with scores of 91, 86.75, and 89 for a third round average of 88.91. This gave them a final total of 265.74, which was just enough for the win. Keenan's trainers, Patricia Griffith and Andre Dignelli, knew from the start that she was a talented rider. She proved herself many times in the pony ring, winning multiple Grand Pony Hunter Championships at all of the major horse shows in the country. Six judges in three judging positions around the ring determined the winners: Ralph Caristo and Alison Robitaille, Jimmy Torano and Chrystine Tauber, and Linda Hough and Joe Fargis. Ω

McKayla Langmeier rode Blackberry for Victoria Press to the reserve championship after they won the handy hunter class. Slagowitz said of her rides, “The handy was kind of bad but the stake was really good.” Slagowitz started showing Cardiff Mardi Gras this year, but this is her second time competing at the WIHS. “He's really easy, he just swaps a lot so you have to hold him,” she described. “He's really slow so you have to go, and wear big spurs. He's really sweet, nice, and safe. He won't stop at any jumps, and he's really good. He's really nice, and he's perfect.” She said about her win today, “I feel really good, it's really exciting.” Trick-or-treating is on the schedule for celebration, she added. Ω Jennifer Wood

"It's taken me a little while to figure her out but now that I have I am really happy because she's so great. I don't get nervous because I think it's more about experience in the ring. It's different riding inside when the jumps come up quickly, so after doing the indoor shows, all the repetition has helped. I really like this ring and think the horses are very comfortable here." "Her handy round was so smooth even with all the hard options," said DeMartini's trainer, Susie Humes of Greentree South. Jennifer Alfano of SBS Farms Awarded Leading Hunter Rider Title at 127th National Horse Show

SBS Farms had a fantastic competition at the 127th National Horse Show under the direction of renowned horsewoman, Susan B. Schoellkopf of SBS Farms. Rider and head trainer Jennifer Alfano rode to numerous accolades aboard her top mounts, while student Meredith Lipke showed her horses to top ribbons as well. Alfano showed SBS Farms' gelding Jersey Boy to the reserve championship in the Regular Working Hunter division. They won the handy round and were also awarded two thirds over fences and second place in the under saddle. Alfano and Jersey Boy also participated in the $50,000 NHS Hunter Classic to honor legendary horseman Charlie Weaver and were awarded fifth place honors. Alfano also showed Meredith Lipke's The Specialist to a first under saddle and earning three second place ribbons over fences in the Regular Working Hunters. Following the competition, Alfano noted, "The boys were great, they are always great! Elton (The Specialist) doesn't care where he is. You could show him out on the street and he would think it is fun. Lewis (Jersey Boy) has grown up so much in the last year. It used to be that you were never sure what he was going to do. He can still throw us for a loop once in awhile, but he is getting more consistent." Alfano also showed SBS Farms' Miss Lucy and Sun King in the Green Conformation Hunters. Alfano and Miss Lucy were the stake winners while Sun King was second in the under saddle and fourth and seventh over fences. Ω

Hayley Barnhill who rode away with the USEF Hunter Seat Medal Finals at the Penn National just two weeks before, proved her consistency and talent by once again besting the top junior equitation riders in the nation. Juniors work all year to qualify for this event and after three phases of competition it was 17-year-old Hayley Barnhill of Collierville, TN who led the victory gallop. In the first round of competition, 153 riders were tested on a course designed by the judges, Scott Hofstetter and Melanie Smith Taylor in cooperation with course designer Richard Jeffery. The fences included a vertical-oxer-vertical triple combination, a natural fan jump off of a sharp left turn and then a sharp right turn to the ASPCA fence. Riders then continued to a tall vertical on the left lead before making their way to a triple bar double combination. While some riders had difficulties during the first round, the course was very inviting overall and gave riders many opportunities to show off their horsemanship. The riders who rode the course smoothly, out-of-stride, and with style were the ones called back in the top 30 to test on the flat. Three groups of 10 were tested, and from there the judges called back the top 18 riders for a second round over fences. After the final round, the class was pinned as follows: 1. Hayley Barnhill; 2. Michael Hughes; 3. Catherine Tyree; 4. Taylor Ann Adams; 5. Lillie Keenan; 6. Theordor Boris; 7. Schaefer Raposa; 8. Lucy Davis; 9. Amber Henter; 10. Sydney Smith Ω

After also earning a junior hunter championship and Best Child Rider award this afternoon, Goodson-Cutt was very excited to get her first big open classic win. "This is the first overall classic that I have won and it feels pretty amazing because I am not just competing against juniors," she stated. "You are competing against a whole slew of riders that have been around for a really long time so you really

Ellen Toon and Invincible Capture Championship for Amateur-Owner Hunter Over 35

For the third year in a row, Ellen Toon and Invincible were presented with the “AutomationModel Cadet” Memorial Perpetual Trophy donated by Mr. Stephen C. Clark, Jr. and the late Mr. Clark, Jr. Ellen Toon was very happy with her success aboard Invincible and stated, “He’s been really, really great this year. We were not so great at Harrisburg, but we were reserve at Capital Challenge and we had a great summer together. I was pretty nervous here because I didn’t ride well at Harrisburg and I just didn’t feel comfortable. Every year I think it gets harder!” Invincible is ten years old this year and Toon noted that he just keeps getting better. “He’s just the nicest horse,” she smiled. “He’s very straightforward and always tries to do a good job for you. You know he’s not going to spook; he’s going to walk down the lines and swap his leads. If he makes a mistake it is usually my fault.” On winning at The National Horse Show, Toon said, “It is a huge deal and I am fortunate to have done well. They make a big effort here in Syracuse to do a great job. The stabling is great, the footing is wonderful and the jumps are beautiful. They do a good job and each year they try to come up with new things to make it better.” Ω have to show yourself and ride very well. It is definitely the most exciting award that I have gotten this entire indoor season." Caretano has now earned the Small Junior Hunter 16-17 division championship at all four of this year's indoor finals. "He is the best jumper I have ever ridden in my entire life. I don't think there is a horse out there that rides as good as Caretano," the proud junior smiled. "This was just a great way to end all four weeks of indoors and it was really nice to be in a class that was held for Charlie Weaver. He was such a great horseman, so I feel very honored." Ω

Sweet, friendly happy guy whose owner just could not afford to keep him. Very balanced, comfy canter with his lead changes in place, sound and sane. Very nice mouth and not strong at all. Frames, goes on the bit gently and naturally. Would make a great equitation or dressage horse or even a hunter pace horse for the big man with a little riding. Owner was an older woman who could no longer afford training board at her stable so we bought all three of her horses. They have been pasture boarded for the last 8 months and only pleasure ridden. They are in great flesh, sound and maintained well. A little fuzzy from the field but nothing a body clip wouldn't help. All three are bargain priced. $7500 see him online at www.grouseridsgehorsesales.com or call Debi at 516-398-6378 or Ann 631-625-5154 Terrance: 16.1 bay gelding 7 years old. Terry is a beautiful hunter type with that stunning topline and beautiful head and neck. DEAD quiet gentle soul that would be a perfect adult or children's hunter. Very cute mover and easy as pie! $4500 see him online at www.grouseridsgehorsesales.com or call Debi 516-3986378 or Ann 631-624-5154 Marco: Bay gelding, 15.3, 5 years. Marco is the cutest guy on the planet. Adorable to look at, jumps in good form, swaps and is so easy to train. He has no issues with anything and loves life!

Sound pretty and a bargain and a half at $3500. Ready to start showing. Great choice for someone who wants to do it all.www.grouseridgehorsesales.com or call Debi at 516-398-6378 or Ann at 631624-5154 Celia: Registered TB, 15.2, pretty sorrel mare. Bought by a trainer who did not have room in her program . Very sweet, easy to ride, not marish. Would be a great pre-children's horse or a wonderful all-around family horse. Nicely started at an unbelievable price of $1850. www.grouseridgehorsesales.com or call Debi 516-398-6378 or Ann at 631-6245154 Artic Ice: 17 han gray gelding, 9 years. Artie showed in the adult equitation divisions successfully this past summer at "A" shows. He has all the tests, auto changes, and is a good enough mover to cross into the hunter ring. Very sound with absolutely no health or soundness issues. Can be leased as well. Reasonably priced under 10K See him at www.grouseridgehorsesales.com or call Debi at 516-398-6378 or Ann at 631624-5154
