Great outdoors the way to go The BUCO Adventure Breakfast Trail Run Series was hosted over six weeks at three different venues around the beautiful Bitou district. The races on November 8 and 21, and Sunday December 6, all featured two distances - a shorter 5-7km trail and a longer, more technical and challenging 10-15km route. Pictured here on her way to becoming the overall third-placed junior girl is Madison Badenhorst, 11, of Plettenberg Bay. How we react to these challenges will determine whether we succeed or fail in the months to come - this according to Stuart Palmer of Plett’s prolific Lunchbox Theatre (www.lunchbox.org.za) crew. “One of the keys to success is innovation. Take the skills set and resources you have and create new ways to apply it to your environment, the current circumstances and the work you do. This is the start of your journey in forging your new normal,” he says. Many businesses have been obliterated by the Covid-19 pandemic and restrictions put in place to prevent its spread. One of the hardest hit of these industries is the performing arts. “Lunchbox Theatre has only performed two live shows this year, whereas we would normally have staged around 50 performances. So have we sat

Lunchbox Theatre shows these kids have all grown to love on regular visits to local schools. “This created the idea of converting some of our more popular scripts into radio plays - and soon the process of making it a reality began. With welcome funding from the National Arts Council of South Africa, we realised this dream.” The show ‘A Dog’s Life’ was

On November 23, they travelled to the Garden Route Media studios in George, where recording booths had been set up in an old cinema to ensure social distancing was practised and everyone remained safe. “As part of our funding criteria to ‘Pay it Forward’ we invited two iKasi Media graduates to learn about the process of sound engineering and recording a radio play,” says Stuart. By the time of writing, their recording was in the final stages of the edit and it will be available for public broadcast in the next few weeks - watch this space for more information. Stuart thanks his wonderful fellow actors Maphiko Ncedani, Amanda Valela and Nkosinathi Xipula, and congratulates Jo-Dene Brown and Duwayne Murphy for being selected as trainees.

Plett Rage: postponed but not yet cancelled… Organisers of Plett Rage have halted ticket sales for the student festival - which was postponed and approved for January 29 to February 6 next year - for the time being following an outbreak of Covid-19 during a similar festival in Kwazulu-Natal recently - YOLANDÉ STANDER reports EALTH Minister Zweli Mkhize in a statement on Sunday slammed post-matric festivals as “super spreader” events and said that it undermined government’s efforts to contain the spread of Covid-19 infections. The KZN festival was held in Ballito from November 27 to December 4; several youngsters and staff members had since tested positive for the virus. “While government makes an effort to contain this virus, we now plead with parents to also exercise their parental prerogative and set boundaries on activities that

H

their children, specifically the youth, can participate in. “It is clear that in these entertainment activities, most participants are not constantly conscious of good behaviour. This means our youth is not only exposing themselves to the risk of contracting Covid-19, but they also put the lives of their loved ones living with co-morbidities at risk,” Mkhize said. In response to the news, Plett Rage organisers have halted ticket sales for the time being and are in constant communication with local authorities on the way forward.

While Mkhize indicated in his statement that Plett Rage took place between November 27 and December 5, organisers made it clear that this was incorrect. Bitou municipal spokesman Andile Namntu explained that these dates were initially proposed, but were not approved following the outbreak of Covid-19. The event was then postponed and approved for January 29 to February 6. The approval was also subject to Covid-19 regulations. Festival owner Ronen Klugman explained that this decision to move the event was taken to minimise the

congregation of visitors in Plett as this period fell beyond the town’s traditional tourism season and outside of the school-holidays. Namntu said the event had not been cancelled, but that decisions would be made in the near future and would depend on Covid-19 protocols. Klugman said last week that thousands of parents trusted him and his team with their children’s safety and that this was not something he took lightly. As part of the planning for this year’s event, organisers have looked at many ways of minimising the

risk of spreading the virus. One of these includes hosting the festival in outdoor spaces on the town’s Central Beach and dividing these spaces up in line with government regulations. Others include ventilation systems, possible Covid-19 testing for all attendees, and an electronic system to keep tabs on festivalgoers. In terms of the future of the Plett Rage, Klugman said that the outcome of the event was still unknown. “We will be making further announcements in coming days. We will only act in the interest of our Ragers and safety of our staff.”

Judgement in seven-year New Horizons rape trial delayed once again New Horizons rape victim’s family and supporters are to wait a little longer for the perpetrator’s sentencing, when the judgement was postponed again on December 3 - this time until March 11 and 12 - in Plettenberg Bay Regional Court. The recent delay follows a previous postponement on November 19, when Emile Kramer could not

A

grace the courtroom with his physical presence due to medical reasons. Last week, the newlyappointed attorney asked magistrate Eugenie Jacobs to allow him more time to look into the case; he is “picking up” where his client’s previous lawyer left off. The appointment of a new attorney was criticised by those in support of the victim as a delay tactic to

further suspend sentencing. But the defence attorney stood firm in his request, despite Jacobs’s obvious annoyance when pointing out that judgement had previously been postponed. The magistrate’s agitation worsened when the defence lawyer indicated he would only be available in March owing to his busy schedule. Ultimately, however, his request was granted.

The Green Hearts, a local organisation fighting against child abuse, left the courtroom utterly disappointed. They expressed their dissatisfaction not only over the postponement, but also about the fact that Kramer was granted bail in the first place. “It’s not understandable why rape accused are still granted bail after the president publicly said this

should not be allowed. They are a danger to society, especially to the children. “In one incident, a suspected rapist was granted bail in the Plett Magistrate’s Court, only to allegedly rape and murder a minor in Hankey, in the Eastern Cape. He is now in St Albans Prison in Port Elizabeth,” said Janet Harding of The Green Hearts. Even though perpetrators

Ludumo Tede

of rape often get away with their crimes, The Green Hearts vow to continue fighting for the victims and are hoping that the government could specially train the police to handle such crimes with delicacy when reported to them. Kramer is facing judgement for sexually assaulting a girl in 2013. The victim, now 19, was 11 years old at the time.

Municipality institutes extra measures to curb Knysna’s Covid-19 infection increase HE Garden Route is experiencing an unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases and Knysna is no exception, with an increase in positive cases and hospitalisations. “The municipality is also falling victim to the coronavirus,” said mayor Elrick van Aswegen. “It is affecting both councillors and administrative staff and we must make difficult decisions when considering how to deal with the internal and external implications of the current situation.” On December 2, Knysna Municipality had a total of 34 active cases among its staff, with 108 persons in isolation and 16 more awaiting test results; 76 employees had already recovered, with one person succumbing to the virus. In August, Knysna Coun-

cil resolved that all municipal employees returned to their physical places of work. “We must, however, remain vigilant and responsible,” said van Aswegen. “We must all do everything in our power to prevent and mitigate the spread of this virus.” To this end, Knysna Municipality has instituted the following measures: • All meetings will take place online. • Employees with proper tools of trade will work from home. • Employees with comorbidities and those older than 60 will work from home. • Staff sharing offices will be rotated. • Essential services will be placed on a shift system. • Public participation meetings will be suspended. • Essential hygiene prod-

ucts are provided to all staff. • The wearing of masks at work is strictly enforced. “We will also be implementing measures aimed at curbing the spread of the virus within our communities,” Van Aswegen said. “Where appropriate, we will be closing certain public facilities. “Law enforcement efforts will be increased in hotspots and businesses will be inspected to ensure that they adhere to the relevant regulations. Our public participation unit will also be disseminating information on how to prevent the spread within our communities.” “We’ve been struggling for long, but now is the time to stay strong,” he concluded. “Season is the time to be jolly, but also to be vigilant. We can’t let all our hard work go to waste.”

Garden Route loses ‘a revolutionary who loved life’ to Covid-19 N December 3, Garden Route District Municipality (GRDM) announced “with great sadness” the passing of Putco Mphuthumi Mapitiza - an ANC councillor from Plettenberg Bay who had succumbed to Covid-19 last Wednesday. “Councillor Mapitiza was directly elected to serve on the GRDM council and also served on numerous committees, such as the Property and Asset Management, Workplace and Restructuring, and Strategic Services committees,” according to the statement. Mapitiza was described by councillors who worked alongside him as “a true leader, an outstanding servant of the people, a prolific

O

commissar, and a revolutionary who loved life”. GRDM mayor Memory Booysen recalled meeting Putco, as he was known by all, while participating in boxing in 1989. They became sparring partners, practising and attending tournaments together. Paying tribute to his friend and colleague of many years, Booysen said: “On a lighter note, he was lucky - he retired from boxing undefeated.” He recounted recruiting Putco into youth politics in 1994/5 with the help of now ANC member of the Western Cape parliament Lulama Mvimbi, whereafter the trio became political associates.

PUTCO MPHUTHUMI MAPITIZA: 8 June 1974 2 December 2020

Mvimbi was mayor of Plett when CXPRESS published its first edition on June 1, 1998, and graced the launch event with a speech of welcome and good wishes. Over the next two decades, the paper bore witness and often reported on the political careers of Messrs Mapitiza, Mvimbi and Booysen, the latter later joining the DA. After graduating into fulltime politics, Booysen and Mapitiza both became councillors at GRDM. “We will all remember Putco - me especially - as somebody who had no grey areas in his personality. What you saw was what you got, and one either agreed or disagreed with him. He was not a pretender when

G-Spot mourns the loss of Angie Condolences and melancholy messages flooded social media since the news spread that Angie Beaumont (23.6.1959 - 1.12.20) passed away last week. “No trip down Prince Alfred’s Pass was ever complete without a quick stop at Angie’s G-Spot. It’s with sadness that we learned of her passing. Our condolences go out to Harold and her family,” wrote the crew at Trans Africa Self Drive Adventures and Tours. expressing his political ideologies,” said Booysen. “I believe that his passing is a great loss to the Garden Route as a whole. I am saddened that in this instance I am not just losing a friend or a former sports partner, but a brother, too. May his soul rest in peace.” GRDM’s ANC chief whip and long-time comrade of the late Mapitiza, Pieter van der Hoven, remembers him as a visionary, a shepherd and a sober thinker at the forefront of technology, who was loved by all who dealt with him. “The value Comrade Putco added to the ANC, as well as being a community leader, remains incomparable. As a councillor, he was dedicated,

strategic and directional with a reasoned judgement. “He was highly respected and had an unsurpassed sense of humour. His death is a huge shock and loss to the organisation in the region and in the community,” Van der Hoven said. Plaaslike Besorgde Inwoners president and fellow GRDM councillor Virgil Gericke described Mapitiza as a gentleman and a true cadre loyal to the course of freedom and justice. Mapitiza formerly served as ANC regional secretary in the Southern Cape, as well as ex officio on the party’s provincial exco. A memorial service was held at the GRDM council chambers on December 8.

A manual of protocols was drawn up to firstly continue the work done on the beach; in Plett, all lifeguards received training on each of these protocols when doing their compulsory annual retest. “The next level was to get on with the sports training side, and we were fortunate to have a set of protocols drawn up that allowed Nippers to start training under Level 1 lockdown rules,” explains Plett Surf Lifesaving Club (PSLC)

chairman James Stewart. “This was great for the youngsters after so many months during which most of them were unable to partake in any sport at all. A few weeks of Nipper training after this trying and disruptive year has had an amazing impact on all the kids, and certainly released many a pressure value after six months of lockdown.” Although championships were held earlier in the year, lockdown prevented Plett’s Nippers ‘family’ from recognising their club champs. So on the last Sunday of November, they were finally able to recognise the achievements of all their Nippers and Juniors. On the day, Nippers head coach Marc Jackson congratulated all top perform-

ers of the 2019/20 season: “With hard work and dedication, these Nippers and Juniors proved that we can achieve our goals.” Along with the rest of the coaches and PSLC committee, he thanked sponsors Crush Surf and Face Adrenalin. “The coaches play a huge part in developing our Nippers and we thank them for all their time and effort,” he said, adding a special thumbs-up to Tanya Coetzee for all her hard work behind the scenes. Thirteen-year-old Matt Coetzer was awarded the legendary Peter Auersperg Kahuna Trophy. (In Hawaii, ‘kahuna’ is a wise man or shaman; the term is also used informally to refer to an important person, or someone in charge: ‘One big kahuna

He has even assisted members of the public in the surf. Well done Matt, Peter would be proud of you.” Members of the public are invited to come and experience the friendly atmosphere at the club, situated on Central Beach, on Wednesdays to Sundays from around noon onwards. Let the goodness of eggs go to your head‌ and all the way to your toes F ROM heart health to muscle building, eggs are a nutrientrich food that should form part of any diet designed to ensure optimal overall health. Brain With advanced medical care, we are now living longer than ever before. By 2030, one in five Americans will be older than 65 years. With increasing age comes an expected increase in the number of people with cognitive troubles. Cognition refers to various functions of the brain, such as memory, thinking, learning, attention, and perception. This makes good cognitive function crucial for dayto-day life, governing our thoughts and actions.

Eggs contain choline and lutein, both nutrients known to be good for cognition and brain health. Lutein is important during adulthood to help ward off age-related cognitive decline, and several studies support the fact that choline helps kids do better at school. Two eggs contain about 250mg of choline, or half the recommended amount for the average adult. As for lutein, one egg yolk offers about 0.2 milligrams, and is absorbed by the body at twice the rate of other lutein sources like spinach and kale. Eyes High levels of lutein and zeaxanthin are found at the centre of the retina - the thin layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye. These nutrients

have been shown to lower the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration, the leading cause of blindness in older people. Zeaxanthin and lutein are mostly found in egg yolks. Heart It is a misconception that eggs are bad for the heart. In fact, the opposite may be true. Recently published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, when analysing data on over 37,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, researchers concluded that there is no link between eating eggs daily and the risk of dying from heart disease. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommended eating eggs as part of a healthy diet, as does the South African food-based

You can use smart outdoor lighting by installing energy-efficient motion sensor lights, which offer a simple and convenient way to light outside areas while reducing your

electricity bill. Don’t forget to replace the bulbs in outside lights with light emitting diode (LED) lights. Keep your pool sparkling It’s important to make regular pool maintenance a priority, as this will optimise the electricity usage of your pool pump. Clean area corners with the least circulation by brushing the floor and walls of your pool at least once a week to remove debris missed by the cleaning device. If an average household reduces its pool pump operating time by one hour per day, the annual demand reduction will be around 274kWh or a saving of about R680, depending on the electricity tariff.

dietary guideline. Muscle When combined with resistance (weight) training, protein provides the foundation for muscle building, while helping with the necessary repair of muscle damage that results from training. Researchers in Canada found that eating whole eggs immediately after resistance exercise resulted in better muscle building than if just the egg white was

eaten. Eggs are an excellent source of high-quality protein, with one large egg containing 7g of protein. A possible explanation is that the whole egg has considerably more nutrients, and the combination of protein and nutrients does the trick. The yolk also contains heart-healthy monounsaturated fats and half of the protein of the whole egg. If you avoid eating the yolk, you miss out on vitamin D and iron - all the more reason to eat the whole egg.

Is New Horizons court shedding its not-so-old skin? I hope this snippet would be newsworthy information for publication in CXPRESS. On collection of my renewal of drivers licence mid-week, I could not believe my eyes. The beautiful new building just outside Plett, which apparently houses a magistrates’ court, offices for application and renewal of licences, etc., is shedding its skin. The fancy façade with lovely dark grey brick covering seems to have a major problem. The brick frontage is falling off in patches all over - this covers a huge area. There was a workman busy chopping off this covering which, ultimately, will have to be redone.

SET IN STONE: Bricks covering the façade of Plett’s magistrate’s court have been removed over the past weeks

It must have been very costly in the first place, and now further costs are sure to be added.

This is the ‘inboard’

Is this yet another example of wasteful expenditure, as the builder/ contractor obviously did

not do a proper job? Who employed this contractor - Bitou Municipality? I think a reporter should photograph this building. Thank you for your newspaper, which is really needed in our town. J McEwan, Plett (When we photographed the New Horizons court precinct’s façade on Monday morning, the job of removing the offending bricks seemed close to completion. The building was officially opened on May 2 last year and the builder was GVK-Siya Zama, of which senior contracts manager Jaco Kotze has received a copy of the above query. We hope to feature a response in this regard in the next edition. - Eds.)

After our feature on the seaplane that landed with great fanfare on Knysna Lagoon in 1928 (read it on p5 of the December 2 edition at www. cxpress.co.za), we sent a pre-distribution electronic version of the page to Cameron Searle - the expert behind the Boatshow Knysna website which informed our story. He responded: “Thanks for the heads up - the story looks great, and it was nice to get the full description of the flight as well. The caption below the second photo is wrong, however, as it refers to another boat (“inboard engine”) in a different photo. My reputation as an ‘expert’ hopefully remains intact, since it appears as the editors’ contribution and not mine. I hope the photo doesn’t ruffle any feathers.” Thanks for being so sporting about our slip-up, Cameron: at left is the boat referred to thus: “This handsome inboard launch must have turned heads in her day; the stern flag isn’t clear, but judging by their dress, the gentlemen aboard are possibly dignitaries.” Email Cameron at info@ boatshowknysna.co.za or visit https://boatshowknysna.co.za/ for details.
