PRESIDENT BARBARA R. SNYDER Barbara R. Snyder became president of Case Western Reserve University on July 1, 2007. A professor who began her academic career as a faculty member at our School of Law, she returned to campus committed to increasing academic excellence, enhancing faculty collaboration, and improving alumni engagement. Seven years later, the university is experiencing unprecedented success in each of these areas. Graduates and other supporters have dramatically increased donations and pledges each year; in 20102011, their $126.2 million commitments set an all-time record for the university. In addition, the overall number of donors has climbed steadily, while the size of the average gift grew by 80 percent since 2007. This progress enabled the university to launch Forward Thinking, the university’s $1 billion capital campaign, with more than 60 percent of the goal raised during the quiet phase. As President Snyder worked to establish strong relationships with alumni and other external stakeholders, she and her leadership team also worked closely with faculty on the university’s academic direction. By the end of President Snyder’s initial year, the university had adopted its first strategic plan in nearly two decades. The document emphasized the importance of interdisciplinary initiatives, among them energy, advanced materials, and human health. It also urged increased attention to internationalization and diversity; within seven months of the plan’s adoption, the university had created and filled new leadership positions in each area. Undergraduate applications to Case Western Reserve have doubled since she arrived, to a total of 14,700 in 2012. Meanwhile, selectivity has grown by more than a third, and academic credentials have climbed dramatically. In 2011, The Huffington Post named Case Western Reserve among the nation’s nine “trendiest colleges,” a list that also included Columbia and Yale universities.

That same year The Washington Monthly placed Case Western Reserve seventh on its list of universities that contribute to the common good. Finally, in 2011 U.S. News & World Report ranked the university 38th – up four places from where it stood when President Snyder arrived. Looking ahead, Case Western Reserve continues to seek ways to build upon its strengths. The president and university leaders also are committed to a community culture that nurtures the inherent possibility of all of its members – one that is welcoming, inclusive, and committed to transparency. Snyder assumed the Case Western Reserve presidency after serving as Executive Vice President and Provost of The Ohio State University. Prior to becoming Provost, Snyder served as Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Human Resources and filled in as the university’s Interim Vice President for University Relations. As a professor at OSU’s Moritz College of Law, she also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and as Director of the Center for Socio-Legal Studies. In 1997, the school’s third-year students voted to give Snyder the College of Law Outstanding Professor Award. She held the Joanne W. Murphy / Classes of 1965 and 1973 Professorship. Snyder joined OSU’s Moritz College of Law in 1988, after spending five years as a professor at Case Western Reserve’s School of Law. She joined Case Western Reserve after serving as an associate at the Sidley & Austin law firm in Chicago. She graduated from the University of Chicago Law School, where she served as executive editor of its law review, and earned her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State.

DISANTO FIELD HOME OF THE SPARTANS

The 2014 season will mark the 10th year that the Case Western Reserve University football team has called DiSanto Field home. The 2,400-seat, state-of-the-art stadium and surrounding residence hall complex opened in August of 2005 as Case Field and was renamed in October of 2013 as DiSanto Field. The facility boasts many distinguishing features, such as its spacious locker rooms, updated press box, field surface and surrounding track. The entire complex was built at a total cost of $126 million. “As a coach and recruiter, you want to be able to show prospects a facility that they would be proud to call home during their collegiate career,” said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. “The players and parents who visit our complex walk away with that feeling and more.” After playing over 35 years of football at Finnigan Field, the Spartans played their last game at the multi-sport complex on November 8, 2003. Finnigan Field had played host to many successful teams, including the 1984 Spartan football squad, which was the first in university history to finish the season undefeated. The field also was used as a practice facility for the Cleveland Browns from 1965 to 1972.

During the 2004 season, the Spartans played their home games at Brush High School’s Korb Field while construction on their new home was completed. Play opened at the new facility for the Case Western Reserve football squad in front of 2,300 fans on September 10, 2005 versus Denison University. The Spartans did not disappoint on that day, defeating the Big Red, 20-6. The setting in which DiSanto Field was built is arguably one of the best in all of college athletics. The gridiron is surrounded by seven residence halls known as the Village at 115. These student dormitories, built in a horseshoe shape around the field, house around 800 undergraduate students, giving the facility a unique and intimate feel. “Our attendance has more than doubled since the facility was erected,” explained Debeljak. “A very spirited atmosphere has created a home field advantage that is second to none in Division III.” The stadium also boasts a modern and spacious press box. The area contains booths designated for both home and away broadcasts as well as a large work room for members of the media and school representatives. The coaches’ areas within the box are especially spacious and seat six coaches comfortably. Also included is

DISANTO FIELD FACTS

Currently, locker rooms are located adjacent to the field in the lower level of house seven of the dormitory complex along with a training room facility, named after Dr. Tom McLaughlin in 2007, which includes both full-size warm and cold whirlpools. In October of 2013, the university broke ground on Wyant Athletic & Wellness Center. The facility was made possible by the $4 million commitment of 1965 Case Institute of Technology alumnus, James C. Wyant, PhD. A former captain of the CIT Roughriders’ cross country team, Wyant’s gift was influenced by the role of athletics during his college years. As part of the North Campus Residential Village and Athletic Complex, the threelevel facility will include the 4,500-square foot Belichick Weight Room – gifted by New England Patriot Head Coach Bill Belichick in honor of his father, Steve, a 1941 graduate of Western Reserve University; a 4,200-square foot cardio workout facility; and a 2,500-square foot Varsity Club with a balcony overlooking the football field and track. Future plans call for the addition of a large multipurpose space with synthetic flooring, as well as an additional wing with locker rooms, coaches’ offices, meeting rooms and a training/medical facility. The facility is slated to open in the fall of 2014. The field itself is a multifunctional field with a FieldTurf surface surrounded by the eight-lane Coach Bill Sudeck Track, named after the legendary cross country, track and basketball coach in 2008. The field was built in a European box style, which provides the appropriate dimensions for soccer contests. Along with hosting varsity football, soccer and track events, the field is used for intramural activities, special events and for the general recreation of the campus community.

11th Season • John Carroll ’88 • Record: 72-31 (.699) Greg Debeljak enters his 11th year as head football coach at CWRU. In his 10 seasons, he has compiled an overall record of 72-31 (.699) and led the Spartans to an unbelievable 38-game regular season winning streak from 2006-10. Debeljak led the Spartans to three-consecutive undefeated (10-0) regular seasons, NCAA Playoff appearances and University Athletic Association titles from 2007-09. And since 2007, Case Western Reserve has posted an overall record of 59-14, earning Debeljak and his assistants the UAA Coaching Staff of the Year award for three straight seasons from 2007-09 and once again in 2011. Five times in the past 10 years, the Spartan staff has received that honor.

three have been named a semifinalist for the Draddy Trophy (commonly referred to as the Academic Heisman). Highlighting his three years as the offensive coordinator, Case Western Reserve ranked first in all of NCAA Division III in passing offense and second in total offense in 2002. Prior to coming to Case Western Reserve, Debeljak spent 12 years as an assistant (1988-00) at his alma mater, John Carroll University. At JCU, he was a graduate assistant during his first two seasons, before working eight years as the quarterbacks and receivers coach. THE COACH “DEBS” PHILOSOPHY Greg Debeljak has a three-part philosophy on how to win both on and off the field, and when it all comes together – the Spartan leader feels it positions his team for ultimate success. “You are going to have various levels of success with wins and losses, but I think it’s important to experience other things,” he explained. “When we have recruiting weekends and we meet as a group, this is one of the first things I bring up.” • The first goal is to become a family through team-building activities. “We want our kids to come together as a team and a family, but it’s difficult,” Debeljak explained. “Each year brings different players with different personalities – that’s why it is our number one goal. We can’t accomplish anything else until we merge together as a family. The relationships an incoming freshman had with his high school teammates most likely began in elementary school – they grew up with each other. The biggest hurdle is to get (freshmen) to believe in their new family in a shortened period of time.” • The second is the commitment to excellence in both athletics and academics without sacrificing one for the other. “In regards to academics and athletics, we feel that even though we are one of the better academic institutions in the country, we still want to be competitive on a national level athletically. Simply said, they should both fit together.” The Spartans annually rank amongst the nation’s leaders in team GPA and have boasted one of the top combined winning percentages of any Division III program in the country since 2007. • Third, student-athletes give something back through community involvement and service. One of his first initiatives in this area was making the players a household name with incoming freshmen by helping them move into their dorm rooms, a recurring event every August. And last year, the Spartan gridironers taught football skills to hundreds of inner city elementary students during a university-wide volunteer effort. “I think it is important to get out there and make your name known to the CWRU Community and to classmates,” Debeljak said. “The Case For Community Day Sports Clinic event is a lot of fun, and our kids learn as much from the campers as they did from them.”

A former All-UAA running back, Rosenbury spent the previous two years as a graduate assistant at University of Redlands in California. Prior to leaving for his position on the west coast, Rosenbury had oneyear stints in similar roles at fellow Division III institutions Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) and Grinnell College (Iowa). Rosenbury began his coaching career at Case Western Reserve in 2007 and coached running backs as the Spartans posted three straight undefeated regular seasons (10-0) and NCAA Playoff berths. His time as a coach followed a standout career in which Rosenbury was a twotime All-UAA selection that rushed for 1,712 yards and nine touchdowns. Rosenbury earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from CWRU as well as a Master of Arts in Higher Education from Redlands in 2013.

Terhune was a three-year letterwinner and senior captain at Wooster. In 2010, he became the first Fighting Scot in five years to earn All-American honors as he was named to the D3Football. com All-America Second Team. Terhune duplicated his success in 2011 with another second-team All-American season. For his career, he totaled 36.5 tackles for loss and 21.5 sacks.

A three-year letterwinner at Stow High School, Lolli went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in history from Kent State in 2009 and a Master of Arts in Education from Walsh in 2012.

Terhune graduated in the spring of 2012 with a Bachelor of Arts in Business Economics.

2014 CASE WESTERN RESERVE SPARTANS FOOTBALL

2014 SEASON PREVIEW The 2014 Case Western Reserve University football season will feature a program-first opportunity as the Spartans will compete for an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. Now an affiliate member of the Presidents’ Athletic Conference, CWRU will play an eight-game PAC schedule while maintaining its traditional slate of University Athletic Association opponents. “Our goal now is to win two conference championships,” said Head Coach Greg Debeljak. “There won’t be a major change in philosophy. We have the same core beliefs as a program, but now we have new opportunities to compete on a national level. This is something our program has looked forward to for quite some time, and we are glad that it is finally here.” Debeljak’s team will feature 30 letterwinners and 12 returning starters with eight on defense (all juniors) and four on offense. “Certainly the majority of our experience is on the defensive side of the ball, but we’re excited about the potential for both units. There is a nice mix of experience and young talent across the roster. We’re looking forward to starting camp in August to see how it will all play out.” Case Western Reserve has seven consecutive winning seasons with a 59-14 overall record since the beginning of the 2007 campaign. During that span, the Spartans have won four UAA Championships with three straight undefeated regular seasons and NCAA Playoff berths from 2007-09.

DEFENSE With eight returning starters from what was a young unit in 2013, the defense is poised to make significant strides in its second season in the 3-4. 16

“As experienced as the defense is, it is easy to forget how young of a group we still have,” noted Debeljak. “But, we saw it during spring practice. With another year under their belts, guys are picking up on things a lot quicker. And, with that experience, comes higher expectations. As sophomores, they were just happy to be out on the field contributing. Now, they know they need to be ready to dominate as juniors.”

Line The line features three returning junior starters in Justin Williams, Josh Rogers and Dayton Snyder. “The three starters can play any of the positions on the line,” said Debeljak. “In our defense, the roles are very similar, so that is helpful when injuries arise and we have to move people around.” Williams, who plays mostly at the end position, returned from injury to start the final five games last season and earn a spot on the All-UAA First Team. He tallied 21 tackles, three sacks and a team-best six quarterback hurries. “Justin is a very good football player. Nothing really jumps out at you when looking at his height, weight, speed or strength, but when you watch him on film, he stands out. He played hurt even when he came back last year, and he was still a boost for our defense.” In seven games as the primary nose guard, Rogers posted 36 tackles with three for loss and one sack. Snyder, who has the ability and size to excel inside or out, was named to the All-UAA Second Team with 40 tackles, five TFL and two sacks. “We’re solid on the line, but we still need to develop some depth. There’s a lot of talent, and we know that it’s unrealistic to think we can last an entire season with just three playing up front.” Returning and looking to provide that depth are three

UAA CHAMPIONS (2007, ’08, ’09, ’11) • NCAA PLAYOFFS (2007, ’08, ’09)

2014 CASE WESTERN RESERVE SPARTANS FOOTBALL additional letterwinners in senior end Mike Valleriano and junior ends Tyler Hamilton and Nate Nachazel. Valleriano, who also serves as the team’s long snapper, posted 12 tackles. Hamilton recorded 11 stops with 1.5 sacks and a forced fumble. Nachazel saw most of his time on special teams.

Linebacker The linebacker corps is deep and the most accomplished unit on the team with three returning starters who all earned All-UAA honors a season ago. On the inside, third-year backer Gavin Sandidge looks to build on a sophomore campaign that saw him named to the All-UAA First Team and OhioCollegeFootball.com Division III All-Ohio Third Team. He led the team and ranked second in the UAA with 76 tackles, 11 of which were for loss. Sandidge also recorded a sack, a forced fumble and a blocked kick. “Gavin is physically our best player,” said Debeljak. “With his lateral quickness, his vertical leap, he has ability that we rarely see at this level. He can really be as good as he wants to be.” Sandidge is joined inside by junior Aaron Weisberg, and on the outside by classmate Everett Dishong. Both were named to the All-UAA Second Team. Weisberg ranked third on the squad and fifth in the UAA with 71 tackles. He also posted 4.5 TFL, an interception and six pass break-ups. “Aaron is quick, tough and very smart, and we rely on him to get others lined up in the right places.” Dishong ranked second on the team and third in the UAA with 75 stops. Additionally, he led the squad with 4.5 sacks and 12 TFL. “Everett is one of our best football players. He’s very versatile. We moved him from safety, and we have played him at end at times. His stats really speak for themselves.” Another junior, KJ Pederson, is expected to start outside opposite of Dishong. Also a special teams standout, Pederson recorded 20 tackles and two blocked kicks in 2013. Sophomore Zach Lyon, who lettered as a rookie, also projects as a significant contributor with the ability to play inside or out. “We feel we have depth at linebacker that we did not last year – especially inside. The starters wound up taking about 99% of the snaps last season. We feel like several players have developed now, and we’ll be able to rotate a lot more to keep guys fresh.”

Secondary While not as loaded with experience as the line-back-

ing corps, the secondary returns half of its starters from last fall as well as a pair of significant contributors. Junior free safety Scott Suren leads the group as a second-team All-UAA honoree. He registered 58 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and three pass break-ups in his first season as a starter. “Scott is our best defensive back,” said Debeljak. “He has the size and speed, is solid against the run, and has the ability to cover.” Also returning from the 2013 starting lineup is junior corner Mike O’Donnell, who totaled 26 tackles, an interception and two pass break-ups. Junior letterwinner Jordan Esteban, a corner with two INTs last fall, is expected to move back to his natural position of safety. “Moving Jordan back to safety will improve our defense in every area. He played out of position last year because we had a need. He’s great in run support, and he can cover.” Sophomore corner Nick Kwon also returns with two interceptions during a standout rookie campaign. “We feel like we’re pretty solid at corner, and we definitely have numbers. Behind OD (O’Donnell) and Kwon, we have a number of freshmen we feel can help us right away. We’re deeper at that position than we have been in past years.”

OFFENSE The Spartan offense has shown the versatility to generate points through a variety of different schemes over the last two seasons. But establishing an identity built around the run game will be a priority in 2014. “Not having an identity hurt us during the first part of last season. After our bye weeks, we were able to find one, and the results obviously improved,” said Debeljak.

Quarterback As the Spartans work to build their offensive identity, it is no secret that success and leadership will have to come from the signal-caller position. Senior quarterback Billy Beecher has played in 15 games during the past two seasons with three starts each in 2013 and 2014. An All-UAA Honorable Mention pick as a sophomore, Beecher has completed 49-of90 passes during his career for 541 yards and three touchdowns. His biggest contribution has come on the ground where he rushed for 375 yards and eight TDs. Last season, Beecher was named UAA Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for a career-high 92 yards and a career high-tying three scores in week three at Frostburg State University (Md.).

2014 CASE WESTERN RESERVE SPARTANS FOOTBALL “Billy is our most experienced QB, and he is a running QB,” said Debeljak. “We’re going to build our offense around his skillset. We need to be able to run the ball inside and out, and have an effective play-action game.”

On the outside, senior Colin MacLeod returns as a starter. Junior Bryan Erb, a significant contributor as a freshman, is back after missing all of last season due to injury. And, the team returns two additional letterwinners in juniors Dan Cronin and Logan Matt.

Including the graduation of three-year starter Erik Olson, only one other quarterback returns from last year’s team. So, Debeljak expects the team’s incoming freshmen to push for snaps.

MacLeod registered seven catches for 74 yards, including a long of 42, in his first full season at receiver. Erb caught 22 balls for 234 yards and team-best four TDs in 2012. Cronin (3 rec/36 yds) and Matt (6 rec/73 yds) had their playing time decreased due to injury in 2013.

Running Back Unlike the past two seasons, the Spartan offensive backfield will not be crowded with experienced players. But, two of the team’s returnees, senior tailback Manny Sicre and junior fullback Adam Hochman, bring experience and production to their respective positions. Hampered by injury for most of last season, Sicre accounted for only 320 yards of offense (152 rushing/168 receiving) with three total scores. For his career, however, he has rushed for 1,515 yards and 10 TDs while adding 621 yards receiving with another five TDs. “When Manny is healthy, he is a real weapon,” stated Debeljak. “He can make people miss and turn plays into big gains. The key will be his health.” Hochman has played in 17 games over his two seasons and earned nine starts. Utilized primarily for his blocking ability, he has accounted for five touchdowns as a pass catcher. The team lost tailback Kenny Riordan and fullback Steven Magister to graduation, so it is likely that versatile sophomore Anthony Bianco and a host of freshmen backs will have an opportunity to compete for significant carries this fall.

Wide Receiver The wide receiver position, led by senior Sean Lapcevic, is easily the offense’s most experienced and accomplished unit. Lapcevic tied for the team lead in receptions (32) and ranked second in receiving yards (320) last season. Also the UAA Special Teams Co-Player of the Year, Lapcevic led the conference in all-purpose yards (1,164). In 29 career games, he has 108 receptions for 1,250 yards and six TDs. “Sean is an all-around football player that has developed into a nice receiver,” said Debeljak. “He’s versatile, extremely quick and effective in space. He’ll be a focal point of our offense.” Joining Lapcevic in the slot, sophomore Brendan Lynch returns after lettering as a freshman. Junior letterwinner Ethan Albers also figures to play more inside this season. Both Lynch (8 rec/66 yds) and Albers (4 rec/35 yds/1 TD) saw significant time last season. 18

“There’s a lot of size and speed with this group. We’re looking for these guys to expand their roles. A lot of them are unproven, but the ability is there.”

Line The offensive line projects to be quite young with the graduation of three starters, but Debeljak sees the men up front as one of the team’s most intriguing units. “We have a lot of sophomores and juniors that will be competing for the open positions on the line,” said Debeljak. “We also have what is probably our best freshman class of O-Lineman. Overall, there is a lot of ability. The great thing is we have the right coach in place (Mickey Iliano) to lead this group. This will be the 20th year that Mick and I have coached together, and I know he’ll get the most out of this group.” As the newcomers begin to identify their roles, the line can lean on the experience of a pair of returning starters in senior tackle Joe Brucker and junior guard Seamus McDonald, as well as a senior leader in guard Sam Reusser. Brucker played in seven games as a junior with starts in the final four at right tackle. McDonald started all nine contests at left guard and has 18 games played in his two seasons. “We moved Joe to tackle last year, and he brings quite a bit to the table – especially in the run game. Seamus is our most talented lineman when you combine size, strength, footwork and nastiness. Sam is one of our strongest guys and a definite leader.”

Tight End Much like years past, Spartan tight ends figure to contribute as blockers and pass catchers. A pair of letterwinners return in senior George Darany and Zech Medved. Darany, an All-UAA Honorable Mention selection, played in all nine games with eight starts last fall, and he recorded 10 receptions for 88 yards and a score. Medved saw increased playing time as his rookie season progressed, earning a start in game seven. “Our tight ends run well and can create some mismatches for the opposing defenses,” said Debeljak.

2014 SEASON PREVIEW “We really want to improve our perimeter blocking this season, and the tight ends will definitely factor in there.”

“The atmosphere during a night game at DiSanto Field is second to none, so we are excited to be playing under the lights twice in front of our home crowd.”

SPECIAL TEAMS

Eight of the games this season will count towards the PAC standings, and the September 6 season opener versus rival Carnegie Mellon will count for both the PAC and the UAA. Rivals Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Chicago round out the schedule as UAA-only opponents.

Open competition will be the theme on special teams as CWRU’s primary kicker and punter from 2013 are gone. Several returnees are in place to compete with a handful of newcomers. At placekicker, sophomores Ben Mroz and Mitchell Hopkins each saw action as rookies. Mroz handled kickoff duties for the first three games before being sidelined with injury. Hopkins converted all five of his extra point attempts in the season finale at Carnegie Mellon University (Pa.). At punter, junior Colton Sullivan is the only returnee. In the return game, Lapcevic once again figures to be the main option after totaling a school single-season record 614 kick return yards and 224 punt return yards.

THE SCHEDULE A pair of home games under the lights and the return season in the PAC set the stage for an exciting fall. “This is no doubt going to be an exciting season for our program,” said Debeljak. “Competing as part of a new conference and familiarizing ourselves with new opponents will be a real challenge. But, that challenge only adds to our excitement level, and I know our players and staff will be ready.”

“We’ve maintained all along that it was very important for our program to continue playing our rivals in the UAA. To be able to do that and to add membership in the PAC with a shot at the playoffs creates a win-win situation.” The winner of the PAC earns an automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Playoffs. With the addition of CWRU and Carnegie Mellon, 11 teams will vie for the title. CWRU’s Homecoming is set for October 18 against Geneva College (Pa.), and Seniors’ Day will be celebrated during the season finale against Chicago on November 15. Two of the teams on the schedule, Waynesburg University (Pa.) and Thomas More College (Ky.), are first-time opponents. The Spartans’ bye is set for September 13. “The amount of talent we have returning, and the amount we have coming in is going to create a very competitive environment within our program. That is going to go a long way in us competing well against the caliber of opponent we will face week in and week out.”

Overall, the 2014 schedule includes five games at home and five on the road. Two of the games at DiSanto Field will be played at night.

ACADEMIC BOWL Each fall, student-athletes from Case Western Reserve University and Carnegie Mellon University meet on the gridiron with the victor claiming the Academic Bowl. Although the football series between the Spartans and Tartans began in 1970, it wasn’t until 1986 when the annual meeting between two of the nation’s top academic institutions was labeled the Academic Bowl. With each school ranked amongst the nation’s elite research and scholastic institutions, a natural rivalry exists in academics. So as competition in the classroom continues, the winner of the coveted Academic Bowl can claim bragging rights on the athletic field for at least one year. The Academic Bowl is more than a trophy, however, as it emphasizes a “Commitment to Academic and Athletic Excellence”. The Spartans won the first Academic Bowl in 1986, defeating Carnegie Mellon 21-14. In the all-time Academic Bowl series, the Tartans hold a 15-13 advantage. 46

THE UAA: WHERE THEORY MEETS PRACTICE For 28 years, the University Athletic Association has continued to serve as a bold statement of the vision of its founders — that the pursuit of academic and athletic excellence are complementary goals and can be achieved without the compromise of one by the other. The members of the UAA hold that the success of intercollegiate athletics is wholly dependent upon institutional integrity and the ability of institutions to complete the full integration of athletics into the academic fabric of higher education. The UAA is a significant expression of the principle that the provision of a high-quality college athletic experience is worth the commitment required of an institution. It is worthwhile not only because it benefits the student-athletes, but also because it benefits the entire campus community and, in turn, the institution itself. Members of the UAA share the belief that academic excellence and athletic excellence are not mutually exclusive. Implicit in this belief are several sets of assumptions. The first is that the academic enterprise is the primary element Student-athletes are just that — students first and athletes second. The second set of assumptions has to do with athletic excellence. Athletic excellence is not to be confused with a win atall-costs attitude. It properly relates to 68

the caliber of experience offered to students who participate in intercollegiate athletics. Athletic teams should have the benefit of qualified coaching — capable individual chosen for professional competence and commitment to putting the welfare of the student first. They should play and practice in first-rate facilities at reasonable times. Their equipment should be safe, of high quality, and conducive to the best performance possible. A consistent and challenging level of athletic competition should be provided to both women and men. The final assumptions concern what might be termed a proper athletic emphasis. Athletic programs are extracurricular activities conducted for students and should be given consideration similar to that accorded other such institutionally sponsored activities. They should not only complement the academic experience, but should also reflect the quality of the academic environment within which they exist. Division III is an approach to athletics — not a synonym for third-rate.

The University Athletic Association sponsors competition in 22 sports — twelve sports for men and ten sports for women — including football, soccer, cross country, volleyball, basketball, fencing, wrestling, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, baseball, softball, outdoor track and field, tennis, and golf. Many student-athletes from UAA institutions have been recognized for their achievements as scholars and athletes. During the 2013-14 academic year, 35 student-athletes from UAA institutions were recognized as Capital One Academic All- Americans®, 169 received AllAmerica honors in team or individual sports, and 18 garnered national championship event titles or Player of the Year accolades. In addition, 13 student-athletes from UAA institutions were among the select group of seniors across the country named NCAA Postgraduate Scholars. Teams throughout the UAA are perennial contenders for post-season play. In 2013-14, two UAA teams won national championships, and one other finished as national runner-up. In all, 20 UAA teams posted top-ten finishes in their national championships, and 12 others finished in the top 20.

THE PRESIDENTS’ ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC), formally organized in 1955 by Western Reserve University, John Carroll University, Case Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University, will be celebrating its 60th anniversary throughout the 2014-15 academic year. The PAC and its membership continue its original, defining mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Currently comprised of 10 select private institutions – Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University and Westminster College – the PAC remains a unique organization in this day of high pressure intercollegiate athletics. With academics at the center of each member’s philosophy, the PAC is built on the principle that an athletic program is a part of college life, but not an entity in itself. The PAC expanded its membership to seven members in 2005 with the addition of Thomas More, formerly an NCAA Division III Independent. Saint Vincent, a former NAIA member, joined the conference in 2006 as it began its reclassification to NCAA Division III status. Another former NAIA member, Geneva, became the conference’s ninth member and began league play in 2007 as it started its NCAA Division III reclassification. Chatham became the league’s 10th member, also in 2007. In 2012, the PAC Presidents’ Council voted to add Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as affiliate members in the sport of football beginning with the 2014 season. The PAC crowns league champions and awards all-conference honors in its 21 championship sports. Head coaches determine All-PAC squads for all team sports, while in individual sports, such as cross country and tennis, All-PAC accolades are based upon performances at the conference championships. The PAC annually awards its men’s and women’s All-Sports Trophies to the schools which perform best across the board in PAC competition. The Washington & Jefferson men and Grove City women captured the 2013-14 trophies. Staying true to its original mission of promoting intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence, the PAC has seen more than 150 of its participating student-athletes recognized as Academic All-Americans®, while the league has also produced numerous NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship winners. Last year, the conference named 902 of its student-athletes to the PAC Academic Honor Roll, which recognizes all participating student-athletes who earn a term grade-point average of 3.60 or above. 70
