Dave DiCarlo returns to the Spartan’s coaching staff in 2016, and will be working with the team’s quarterbacks.

Jim Stephens will join the Spartan’s coaching staff in 2016 as an assistant coach, following an outstanding career as a head coach and educator at the University School. His primary responsibilities at CWRU include working with the team’s outside linebackers.

Assistant Coach - Quarterbacks

DiCarlo, who earned a B.A. (political science & history) in 1961 from Western Reserve and M.A. (political science) in 1974 from Case Western Reserve, was the Spartans’ quarterbacks coach for a four-year stretch from 2006-10, helping develop and mentor All-American Dan Whalen. He also served as the program’s offensive coordinator in 1999, linebacker coach in 1984 and offensive line coach from 1985-86, 1989 and 1999. He was John Carroll University’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 1987. DiCarlo has extensive experience at the high school level, including being the head coach at local Independence (1992-96), Cleveland Heights (1975-83) and Byzantine Catholic (1966-74) high schools. Independence made it to the state semifinals twice under the five-time coach of the year in 1992 and 1995. Most recently, he was the quarterbacks coach at Walsh Jesuit High School. DiCarlo retired from a career in both public and private high school teaching in 1999.

Assistant Coach - Outside Linebackers

Stephens served as the head coach at the University School from 2000 until 2014, going 82-17 during his 15 seasons. The 82 wins rank as the most in the 125-year history of University School football. Prior to becoming the head coach, he was the assistant varsity football and wrestling coach at the school from 1994-2000, and held numerous coaching positions at Shaker Heights High School, Wickliffe High School, the Laurel School and Phillips Academy over his career. Stephens was an English teacher at the University School for the previous 22 years. Prior to that, he was the Head of the English Department at the Laurel School from 1998-1994, and was an English teacher at Phillips Academy from 1980-88. Stephens was a two-year starter at safety for Princeton University, graduating cum laude in 1974 with a degree in English. He went on to earn his Master of Arts degree in English from Columbia University in 1976, and his Master of Philosophy degree in English from Columbia in 1979, where he was a President’s Fellow.
