Our Aims and Objectives

Dated Subscriptions

Our Charity’s purpose is: The focus of our work • To benefit the public by promoting the positive teachings and values of the Christian faith. • To bring lasting change for good in the lives of people through our publishing and training programmes. The aims of the Charity are to encourage people to apply God’s Word to everyday life and relationships. Our aims fully reflect the purposes that the Charity was set up to deliver.

Our primary objective continues to be the advancement of the Christian faith. The strategies we use to meet this objective include: • Our Training Programme – offering various courses for all academic levels from degree level to one-day popular seminars. These include courses for ministers, leaders and church workers and are held at our centre at Waverley Abbey House in Surrey, as well as in churches and venues around the UK and overseas. • Our Publications and Resources – both dated and undated, for all age groups. The distribution of these publications is worldwide through a number of National Distributors in various countries.

Who used and benefited from our services? • Nearly one million readers around the world continue to read Every Day with Jesus, our acclaimed daily devotional Bible-reading guide. • Many thousands of other readers use the six additional CWR daily Bible-reading notes.

• Some 185 students attended our five-day Introduction to Biblical Counselling course. Over 80 students completed Waverley Christian Counselling Certificates/Diplomas, studying on our courses based either at Waverley Abbey House or at the London School of Theology.

• CWR publications continue to be distributed free into UK prisons and young offender establishments through our links with the Prison Chaplaincy Service.

• CWR and the London School of Theology, under a joint venture agreement, manage and fund the Watford Christian Counselling Service (WCCS), a free counselling service for any members of the public, of whatever faith or none, who wish to take advantage of it.

• Three public appeals were launched: to send devotional literature to encourage new Christians in Ghana, to provide daily devotional books for young children in Kenya and to provide prison chaplains with material to use with prisoners and young offenders wanting to explore and make a commitment to the Christian faith.

• Much of the Training programme is subsidised by the Charity and the fees we charge do not cover the full course costs. Seven seminars, events and forums were held at Waverley Abbey House at no charge to participants.

• 8,000 Cover to Cover Complete and Every Day with Jesus One Year Devotional Bibles were sold, some of which are being read in registered churches participating in our Bible Challenge programme.

• £2,900 in bursary funding was made available to enable a small number of students to attend our counselling courses. An ‘Early Bird’ pricing structure was introduced, thus widening access to courses.

• Overall, 2,600 people attended over 75 training courses at Waverley Abbey House during the year.

Training Programme CWR-trained counsellors are found around the world, providing a significant benefit and skill to many and varied communities. Our courses are in great demand as students identify with CWR’s unique Waverley Model of Human Functioning as it helps them to provide support to a large number of people in need of such input.

Training income for 2010 declined by 5.7% on the previous year (£573,951 compared to £608,727 in 2009), and training costs, including allocated support costs, increased by 4.4% to £1,103,791 (2009: £1,056,932). These numbers were negatively impacted by the worsening economic climate and the need for additional start-up funding, training infrastructure and administration to accommodate the university’s requirements for the new BA courses.

UK After many years of prayer and planning, a major milestone was passed in July when university validation for our modular counselling courses was obtained from Roehampton University. Our BA Counselling degree is the first pure UK counselling degree to be presented from a Christian world-view. The BA was launched in November with 42 students enrolled in year 1. CWR and the London School of Theology continue to deliver the Theology and Counselling course as part of a joint venture agreement. This unique programme began in 1998 and combines a highly effective blend of Scripture, theology and counselling – the UK’s only university-validated Theology and Counselling degree. A strong pastoral care training programme, including Insight Days into Eating Disorders and Dementia, was held. Three well-received Bible Discovery weekends took place, including one in November 2010 entitled Just Mercy: picking up on the worldwide Micah Challenge initiative. A full Women at Waverley programme, including a five-day training course in March 2010 for women in ministry, was carried out. The level of positive feedback regarding our training courses both here at Waverley and in the regions has been particularly pleasing. Delegate responses to course content have included the following remarks: • ‘CWR’s training has given me confidence to be a counsellor – a set of tools, framework and structure for future growth and learning.’ • ‘The IBC course is a wonderfully prepared and presented week, full of opportunity for both personal and professional growth. I felt I learned more on this five-day course than in the whole first year of my Doctoral Studies.’

South East Asia A subsidiary company, CWR Care and Counselling Asia Ltd in Singapore has been established to act as the legal entity for developing our work in the wider region of South East Asia. We aim to seek charitable status in Singapore for this company at a later date. CWR’s commitment to serve the Church in Singapore continued with further ministry visits taking place during the year. We continue to be encouraged with the positive reception for the Principles of Biblical Counselling Course by so many in Singapore. None of this could have been achieved without the significant help and support provided by the long-term friend and supporter of CWR, the Rev Canon Dr James Wong.

Waverley Abbey House Waverley Abbey House continues to be used predominately as the base for the Training programme in the UK. However, plans for the development of the Waverley Abbey Campus were put on hold during the latter part of the year whilst we further explore all other possibilities and opportunities that will enable us to best achieve our strategic objectives.

Meals served

‘Waverley is a perfect setting – so peaceful. Fantastic food and we were so well looked after.’

During the year we welcomed around 6,500 guests to the House. Almost 19,000 meals were served and over 4,400 bed-nights were recorded. We continue to receive high praise for the quality of the delegates’ experience. The grounds of Waverley were used by Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Charity in July as the ‘start and finish’ venue for their sponsored cycle ride. Over 200 riders participated. In September, Waverley Abbey House again opened to the public to participate for the very first time in the National Heritage Open Day initiative. Over 125 people visited and the experience was very well received.

‘Beautiful house and grounds – a sense of peace and serenity – would like to have stayed longer.’

Publishing Activity CWR publications are valued around the world for their practical guidance and down-to-earth teaching. Every Day with Jesus is the classic daily devotional loved and read around the world. We continue to receive testimonies of how these materials have benefited people in many different situations. The book market in the UK and internationally continued to pose significant challenges throughout the year but publishing revenues held steady at £1,780,846 (2009: £1,767,870). Publishing costs, including allocated support costs, were substantially reduced by 4.3% to £1,746,577 (2009: £1,824,923).

UK We continue to update and refresh previously published material in our flagship devotional, Every Day with Jesus. Consideration is being given to the long-term development and delivery of all our dated resources. One initiative is the addition of an online resource for group and individual study materials. This includes free downloadable video footage to accompany the online resource, EDWJ Extra. As part of our stated publishing strategy, we have continued to develop resources using staff authors and CWR course material. Some of the annual highlights include: 50 Weirdest Bible Stories was awarded Speaking Volumes’ Children’s Book of the Year for under-12s. February saw the major public launch of Spurgeon: The People’s Preacher (book and DVD) held at the BAFTA Theatre, London. This was attended by over 120 church leaders, members of the media and press, UK Christian book trade representatives

and CWR supporters. We introduced Pens, a new daily Bible-reading publication for adults to use with preschool children (3- to 6-year-olds). The public launch of the first six individual titles took place at the Christian Resources Exhibition at Esher in May.

We are pleased to announce that the delayed book and DVD resource (Faith, Hope, Love and Everything in Between) will be available during 2011. This new seminar, DVD and book have been created by Mick Brooks and focus on the nature of our spiritual journey.

We are increasingly being seen as a children’s publisher with a very wide and successful range of children’s books in print. During the year, we estimate that over 50,000 CWR publications were placed in children’s hands – even excluding the dated notes for children!

We will also commence making some backlist titles available in e-book format.

We continued to see sales of over 30,000 different booklets per annum written specifically for new Christians and we published The Big Story, the third of our one-year Bible-reading programmes. Sales of the Cover to Cover Bible Study Guides grew steadily throughout the year. Total annual sales of this series rose to almost 30,000 units across all 40 titles. We are delighted to record the strengthening of the subscription base for CWR dated daily Bible-reading notes during the year. At year-end we had 21,764 annual subscribers for the various CWR dated materials, a 2% increase on the previous year. Our proposed projects for 2011: For the first time, we are publishing CWR’s Waverley Model of Christian Counselling in a book entitled Caring and Counselling. This important resource has been long awaited by those involved in Christian counselling. We will launch a key suite of print and DVD resources by well-known author and speaker, Jeff Lucas, for those seeking faith and those new to faith.

International Singapore continues to be the key focus of our international training and publications ministries and since a change in arrangements last year we are working with KI Entertainment as our Australian and New Zealand distributor. These markets continue to be important for both our dated and non-dated publications. In Nigeria, the daily Bible-reading notes Every Day with Jesus and Inspiring Women Every Day continue to be the most popular CWR publications. Quantities have diminished in recent years as a result of a number of factors including the economic climate and the now infrequent CWR presence at live events in the country.

Financial Review

Financial Highlights

Principal funding sources for the Charity are the Training and Publishing activities as well as voluntary donations. 2010 proved to be a fairly stable year despite the ongoing effects of the worldwide economic difficulties. At first sight, the final results closely mirror those of 2009. However, within the figures there were changes in the income pattern; we experienced some growth in our Publications revenue but there was a decline in our Training income.

Total income amounted to £3,215,903 (2009: £3,218,802) Overall resources expended totalled £3,165,871 (2009: £3,196,707) Overall voluntary income increased to £745,214 (2009: £723,990) CWR recorded a £50,032 surplus (2009: £22,095)

As ever, we are grateful to God for the financial support of our Partners and supporters around the world who continue to sustain the Charity by their giving and prayers. Partners’ gifts amounted to £244,516 during the year (2009: £251,767) and significant legacies amounting to £120,702 were received. We also recovered a total of £83,956 through the UK Gift Aid scheme which is clearly an important element in our overall funding.

Balance Sheet Highlights Net assets increased to £3,183,520 (2009: £3,120,296) Fixed assets reduced to £3,072,213 (2009: £3,098,306) Net stock position stands at £416,179 (2009: £402,987) Cash balances stand at £648,926 (2009: £767,790) The cash balance includes restricted funds of £277,672 (as at 31 December 2010)

Plans for Future Periods The Charity plans to continue with the activities as outlined above, subject to satisfactory funding. A full Publishing programme will continue as we produce various new products developed out of CWR’s core teaching and training materials. Our longer-term plans include extending our work in South East Asia, launching our accredited courses and developing our influence in the field of Christian education. We have made good progress in getting these plans under way. As we have developed our overall plans we have seen that there could be advantages in working with other organisations and charities, and that suitable alliances could enable us to achieve our strategic objectives earlier. Plans continue to be developed on a number of key development areas including: • To consolidate the ministry activities in Singapore through CWR Asia • To commence the newly validated BA (Hons) Counselling Programme • To investigate the introduction of distance learning and the online delivery of courses

Structure, Governance and Management The ministry of CWR was founded by the late Rev Dr Selwyn Hughes in 1965. The organisation is incorporated as a charitable company, limited by guarantee and governed by its Memorandum & Articles of Association. Revised Memorandum & Articles of Association were approved by the Charity Commission in January 2010 and were formally adopted by the Members of the Charity at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 15 April 2010. Formal Board meetings are held three times a year in April, July and December. There is one Board Development day held in each year. No new Trustees were appointed during the year. The Board is assisted in its work by six Advisory Groups that cover the key areas of Governance, Finance, Publishing, Training & Events, International and Resources. A minimum of two Trustees are members of each Advisory Group, one of whom acts as the Chair and the Groups also include senior CWR executives and outside advisers. The Ministry Strategy Team, made up of the Chairman of the Board, the Chief Executive and three senior executives meets three or four times a year. Their brief is to assess the progress of the ten-year plan in each of CWR’s six ministry areas and to set the strategy in order to achieve the objectives as directed by the Board.

Staff The staff numbers, excluding Directors, totalled 53 FTEs (full-time equivalents) down from 56 FTE in 2009. The turnover of permanent staff remains relatively low dropping from 15.5% in 2009 to 14.3% in 2010. There were nine new starters and nine people left the Charity during the year. Of those who left, seven staff took retirement after a number of years’ service. Two of these retirees then came back into part-time roles. There were four internal transfers during the year as staff moved to take up posts in other departments.

• To reinvigorate and reinvent the format of the dated reading materials • To build new routes to market, particularly in the mail order and e-commerce channels • To further explore and build upon our joint venture agreement with the London School of Theology to enhance the existing BA in Theology and Counselling

The CWR Foundation There’s nothing like the written Word of God for showing you the way to salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Every part of Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another – showing us truth, exposing our rebellion, correcting our mistakes, training us to live God’s way. Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us. 2 Timothy 3:16–17 (The Message)
