BREAST SCREEN MYTHS A mammogram is painfulThere may be some discomfort for those seconds that your breast is compressed. A mammogram should not be painful. Many women say that they were anxious prior to their first mammogram for this very reason, and afterwards state that they had no reason to be concerned.

Breast can be too big or too small to have the mammogramAll breasts can be x- rayed.

MARYANNE TAOUK Travelling To over 60% of the state, the Breast Screen van gives women in remote and regional new South Wales access to the same level of care as those in major metropolitan areas. BreastScreen nSW Health Promotion officer, lisa Maxey, is on a mission to ensure every woman gets the message and has the access. “i have a saying, it goes ‘if you grow it, you should know it’ and that counts for everyone,” said lisa. “There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to breast screening and it’s always the case that the benefits outweigh any of the bad thoughts a woman would have had.” Some of the myths that lisa has heard include the costs,

which lisa says can be completely free. “all women over the age of 40 are eligible for a mammogram screening through our service.” For lisa ensuring that women in every region have access to up to date applications and resources is the centres number one priority, with the mobile van on the road every day of the year. “We try to make it so everyone can get a mammogram and with a phone call our team can make sure that you know where the nearest radiographer and machine are,” if you would like more information or to book an appointment contact BreastScreen nSW on 13 20 50 or visit the centre at orange Health Service.
