When One Door Closes AFTER 18 YEARS WORKING IN THE ELECTROLUX FACTORY, ORANGE RESIDENT GLEN SECKOLD IS EMBARKING ON A NEW CAREER AS A DISABILITY SUPPORT WORKER WITH CAREWEST.
O
ne of the largest regional community services providers in NSW, with Disability Services including Active Participation Programs, Supported Accommodation, Respite, Drop in Support, After School Care, Vacation Care and Transition to Work Programs, CareWest has been working with customers, families, carers and the local community for over 30 years. Glen’s new role within this not for profit organisation, sees him assisting people with disabilities to achieve their personal goals and maintain their independence while learning valuable life-skills. “We assist with all types of needs including cooking, cleaning, helping with showering and everyday chores and we encourage customers (clients) to help out if they can,” said Glen. “It’s a rewarding type of job and completely different to working in a factory.” Glen describes the transition from Factory to Disability Support Worker as a challenge but with full customer focused training provided and help from his dedicated leadership team, he feels well supported. has found that some skills from his previous employment have transferred well into his new work environment. “I’ve worked with a lot of different people from different parts of the world. In Disability Care you work with a lot of different customers and carers and it probably makes it a little bit easier if you’re able to work in a team.” With the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) set to launch in the Western NSW in 2017,
CareWest is taking the opportunity to provide more services for people with a disability and more employment opportunities for people in remote, rural and regional areas. Siobhan Burns works at CareWest’s newly opened 4C complex in Orange, providing Active Participation Programs (formerly known as Day Programs) to people with disabilities. Siobhan made the career change from Nursing to Disability Support Worker five
and a half years ago and has never looked back. “We work to enrich people’s lives,” says Siobhan who assists with household tasks and helps clients attend social outings and participate in their hobbies or interests. “We also teach skills like cooking; one customer who didn’t know how to cook previously can now make Spaghetti Bolognaise on his own. All we need to do is stand with him and prompt him but he can now cook.” “We go swimming or bowling. We’ve even been taking our guys to trampoline centres. I have been teaching one customer in particular how to do front flips which she absolutely loves.” Both Siobhan and Glen are happy with their decisions to swap careers. “If you are interested in a challenge then go for it!” said Glen. “There are a lot of opportunities in this field and a lot of training. You will learn a lot. It’s very rewarding” he said.
