Geoff Langdon Is there a good holiday destination you can recommend? I would recommend a place called Crescent Head on the coast, because it’s a quiet, family friendly destination that hasn’t become commercialised. There’s lots of relaxing things you can do there by the water, I’m not much into swimming but it’s a great place for fishing and walks along the beach. We usually meet up with other families and stay for two weeks. It’s very convenient and doesn’t have all the hustle and bustle of other holiday destinations. What’s your favourite TV program? My wife and I enjoy a program called ‘Escape to the Country’ on 7two. It’s an English program about couples leaving a big city and looking to buy houses in the country. We find it fascinating, not just for the grand old houses but also the beautiful English country side. There’s just something about it, hopefully we’ll get there one day. Is that something you would like to do? Move to England? I don’t know about move... but we’d definitely like to visit. We’ve just had friends spend six weeks in England and they said it rained nearly every day! I don’t mind rain, but not six weeks of it! What’s your pet hate? I can’t stand the repetitive television commercials that play again and again. It almost turns you off the product or program! Especially when they are advertising a new TV show, you see so much in the ads that you feel like you don’t have to watch the actual show! It’s overkill. Do you have a hobby or pastime? I’m a volunteer presenter at two local radio stations. I do two hours a week on the Christian radio station Rhema 103.5, and I also host the Country Music Show on 107.5 the Local Station. I would recommend getting involved with these radio stations to anyone. Personally I find it very satisfying; I

guess I’ve always had a bit of a flair for presenting. I just love it. It involves playing music interspersed with a bit of talking and the odd interview, and it suits me because I enjoy talking to people and doing interviews. Being a radio announcer is a bit removed from my work as a Baptist minister, a lot of people ask how the two co –exist, but the two jobs fit together quiet easily! I also do it as a means of giving back to the community; I am able to promote local events for example. I’d encourage anyone to listen in... I’m on Fridays on 107.5 between 12-3pm, and on Tuesday on Rhema 103.5 between 4pm -6pm. You have mentioned you’re a Baptist Minister, what are some of the benefits a person or families could gain from going to church? I can think of several... one is being what we call ‘spiritually fed’ on a Sunday. It’s good for people to gather together and interact; it gives an opportunity for church people to think of ways of helping the community, maybe helping those who are less fortunate or struggling for example. Other reasons and I know that not everyone agrees with this, but in this day and age I think people need some kind of spiritual support. You can look around and see a lot of things going wrong in the world, and it can leave people feeling lost or dismayed. Again, not everyone would agree but I think the Church has an important role in coming along side people and giving them support. And I don’t mean forcing the Bible onto people, that’s not how we operate, but just to be there to help guide people. I see my role as a pastor as that of a support role. It’s also good for people to have that one day a week that they spend with family and friends to refresh and renew.

TIME FOR A CHUCKLE

Now Open

Checking out of the grocery store, a woman noticed that the bag boy was eyeing her two adopted children curiously. They often drew scrutiny, since her son is a blond Russian, while her daughter has shiny black Haitian skin. The boy continued staring as he carried her groceries to the car. Finally he asked, “Are those your kids?” “Yes, they are!” she answered proudly. “They adopted?” he asked. “Yes,” she replied. “I thought so,” he concluded. “I figured you’re too old to have kids that small.”

I would encourage more people to think about joining Church services. Can you recommend a good read? A apart from my text book which is the Bible of course! I like nonfiction books, particularly stories about the Second World War. It’s not a gory fascination; I’m just interested by the stories from that period of history. I get a monthly magazine put out by the Canberra War Memorial called ’Wartime’. I also like books that have Christian themes, not Bible commentaries as such, but stories that are based in biblical times. Some writers go back in history and build stories incorporating biblical stories from that period of time; I find these books fascinating and also very helpful. I’ve loved reading ever since I was a little kid. I would often go to sleep with a book on my chest and mum would go crook because I’d leave the light on! I think books are valuable and there is not enough emphasis on how important they are in people s life. Have you seen a good movie lately? ‘The Railway Children’ is a good family movie. It’s about little kids in England who grow up separated from their parents... it doesn’t end like you think it would, and I would recommend it. Where is a great place to eat in Orange? ‘The Patmos Garden Cafe’ at the Botanical Gardens. I’ve been there a couple of times and it’s a very pleasant atmosphere. I’ve been there for lunch with a group of people and they couldn’t do enough for us. Then you can go for a stroll in the beautiful Botanic Gardens, it’s a lovely area.
