How to Register

The Cowichan Valley Regional District’s Community Services Department offers two easy ways for program registration: in person or online. Spaces are filled on a first come, first served basis. Registration opens on the date stated on the back of the guide. No early registration will be accepted. Payment is required at time of registration.

Online Registration:

To use online registration you will need an account and a credit card. If you haven’t registered with us before, please contact your local recreation centre to set up your family’s account. You can access online registration at www.reccowichan.ca

In Person Registration:

Please check our website for up to date information on in person registrations. You may call Cowichan Lake Sports Arena, Cowichan Community Centre, Kerry Park Recreation Centre, or Shawnigan Lake Community Centre during office hours and our staff will be happy to process your request. Payment by cash, cheque, VISA, MasterCard, or debit card is accepted.

Registration Policies & Guidelines Uh-oh, we had to cancel:

Regrettably, if a minimum number of registrants is not met, we may have to cancel or combine classes due to insufficient registration. These decisions are made prior to the course start date. Please register early to avoid disappointment. A 100% refund is granted when we cancel a program. When a class has been cancelled due to instructor illness or weather conditions, a class will be added on at the end of the session. If this is not possible, you will be issued a refund in the amount of the missed class.

Oops, changed your plans?:

A refund will be issued if we receive applicable withdrawal notification. Programs and lessons require five (5) or more days’ notice prior to course start date. Camps and certification courses require seven (7) or more days’ notice prior to course start date. If appropriate notice is not given, no refund will be issued. There may be other exceptions to these guidelines. In some cases, these exceptions will be noted in the individual course description. To request a refund, please contact the facility that is offering your program. Taking COVID-19 into consideration, if the Province of British Columbia is in a declared State of Emergency, the notice of cancellation will be waived. All refunds are subject to a $5 processing fee.

Extended Illness / Injury and Missed Classes:

Please stay at home when you’re sick, even if symptoms are mild. In cases of extended illness or injury, a prorated refund may be granted upon provision of a medical note. Classes missed due to vacation, or other reasons will not be refunded.

Sorry, the course is full:

If a program is full, please ask staff to put your name on our waitlist. We will do our best to accommodate those waitlisted.

Customer Satisfaction:

We care about your experience in our programs. Please contact one of our Programmers directly to discuss any questions, comments, or concerns that you have with our recreation programs.

Refunds:

Payments made by credit card will be refunded by the initial payment method. Payments made by cash, cheque, or debit will be refunded by cheque; please allow a minimum of two weeks’ processing time.

Physical literacy is the key to being

ACTIVE FOR LIFE What is Physical Literacy?

Physical Literacy is the motivation, confidence, physical competence, knowledge and understanding to value and take responsibility for engagement in physical activities for life. (The International Physical Literacy Association, May 2014) Physical activity is a lot more fun when we’re physically literate. If we want children to be active for life, they need to develop physical literacy at a young age. Physicalliteracy.ca offers coaches, recreation professionals and health practitioners access to a wide range of resources that can help people become physically literate.

What are Fundamental Movement Skills?

Fundamental movement skills are the foundation for an active life. This list contains 25 fundamental movement skills which children can learn:

COVID-19 & Recreation The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s (CVRD) ability to deliver programs and services to its citizens. Many services were temporarily stopped or modified in response to COVID-19 to ensure the health and well-being of the community and staff. The CVRD has developed the COVID-19 Restoration of Programs and Services Plan to assist with the gradual process and decision making needed to restore services. This process will be guided by information and advice from health authorities, other levels of government, WorkSafeBC, and other stakeholder groups such as the BC Recreation & Parks Association (BCRPA), Lifesaving Society of BC, VIA Sport BC and provincial and national sport governing bodies. Our Community Services Department is focused on getting back to a “new normal” and restart our Recreation facilities to help you get back to being active, healthy and connected to your community in a safe manner. Additional precautions have been put in place to minimize risk, which includes facility safety plans and program guidelines to ensure the health and safety of all.

Visit our website www.cvrd.bc.ca for Safety Guidelines specific to your program.

YOUBOU LANES

Take a Trip Down Memory Lane - Visit Historic Youbou Lanes This historic, beautifully maintained four-lane bowling alley, built in 1951, takes you back to the time of hand-set pins. The lanes and much of the equipment are original from the time of installation, but Youbou Lanes keeps up with the times, offering Rock ‘n Glow bowling and a licensed facility.

Fall Bowling Schedule Youbou Lanes is now available for Family Bubble Rentals. Maximum of 9 people unless special approval has been provided by the Bowling Alley Coordinator or the Manager of Cowichan Lake Recreation. Please call the Cowichan Lake Sports Arena office to book your private rental at 250.749.6742 ext. 0. Rental groups are asked to arrive at the bowling alley no more than 10 minutes prior to the start of their booked time slot and leave immediately following the rental, staying no longer than 10 minutes. This helps to ensure the health and safety of pinsetters. A plan for return to Leagues and Drop-in Bowling at Youbou Lanes is being developed. We will be updating the recreation guide with this information as soon as possible. Please check back.
