Plaid shirts are going to be a big hit this season, think light cotton with short sleeves to avoid looking like a throwback from Nirvana. Team with a bright T Shirt or layer under a gilet or baseball jacket for extra style points. Neutral tones will also be a strong favourite this spring alongside the traditional monochromatic styles. Denim is going to be everywhere, just don’t forget that this year, blue is definitely the new black.

Love Honour and OBEY!

FEATURES | WEDDING DATE

(Guys you know it makes sense!)

You know the drill... boy meets girl, they fall in love, get married and live happily ever after, sounds pretty straightforward, right? Wrong! We asked a couple of newlyweds Katie and Oliver Wright to keep a diary in the run up to the big day, here are some excerpts from both sides of the story...

February 15th 2009 He finally did it! Although I might hasten to add it was in typical Oliver fashion... Last night we went out for Valentines Day. I was completely spoilt, he bought me the biggest ever box of chocolates from Thorntons, a gorgeous bouquet of stargazer lilies from Nu leaf (he knows they’re my favourite!) and the dress in Republic that I’ve had my eye on for ages! In the evening we went for a romantic candlelit dinner for two at my favourite restaurant, Eden Bar & Restaurant, I had a feeling he was going to pop the question, he didn’t. He thought it would be infinitely more romantic to ask me as I was washing up the dishes from Sunday dinner today? But who cares, I’m getting MARRIED! February 15th 2009 Yesterday was a scary day for me. The thought of getting on one knee in Eden Bar & Restaurant in front of all the evening diners was terrifying. I eventually succumbed to the fact that proposing over a bowl of soapy suds at home was gonna have to do as I was fast running out of time and the nerves were making it increasingly harder to do. What’s even scarier is the fact that I’ve now been asked to chronicle a diary over the next 15 months of our future wedding plans, hope we have a big enough diary from WHSmith. February 20th 2009 It’s now 100% official, we are now engaged! I managed to drag him out at the crack of dawn to go ring shopping. (It’s not my fault he chose to stay out ‘til stupid o clock with his mates last

night!) It took pretty much all day, we must have visited every jewellers in the city at least twice, I didn’t realise there were so many jewellery shops in Coventry, there’s Francis and Gaye, H Samuel, Ernest & Jones, Kingfisher, Silver Glade, the Golden Shop etc etc! Finally, I managed to persuade him to get the Frederick B one from Francis and Gaye. I can’t wait to show my mum! February 22nd 2009 Just got in to work, the weekend has flown by, and I spent most of it looking for a perfect ring for my fiancée. I would have loved to have saved some cash for the latest plasma television at Electronix, but after all, you only get married once. So the console of my dreams was postponed to later in the year, when perhaps I would have saved enough to fill the gap in my now very empty wallet. March 6th 2009 I didn’t realise how much effort this would all take! We’ve had a few disagreements on dates and venues already, he seems to want a quick no frills wedding (and keeps reminding me about the cost of my new rock) whereas I have my heart set on a spring wedding either at Coventry Cathedral, St Mary’s Guildhall or Holy Trinity Church. March 9th 2009 St Mary’s Guildhall! Booked! Roll on March 6th 2010! March 10th 2009 It’s my birthday today, and to celebrate we’re going in to town tonight. Might head over to Chicago Rock Café for a few and then move on to JJ’s or Lava /Ignite for a night out with the lads. Oh yeah, this is a wedding diary only, was getting carried away then! We booked the venue yesterday, much to my

16 Feel Alive Spring 2010

disgruntlement, who would have thought so much effort was needed in planning this thing. April 3rd 2009 I’m so tired today, went out yesterday with my mum and sister looking for a dress. We went to all the dress shops, Proposals, Berketex Bride, even Debenhams and Monsoon, the staff were really helpful, unlike my mother who insisted I tried on a few meringues?! My sister printed out pictures from her phone at Max Speilman which we then laid out on the table in Dogma and compared them all whilst ‘doing lunch’ and sipping cocktails. Found the perfect dress in Berketex Bride on Corporation Street, it’s simply divine, I actually cried when I tried it on, although that may have been due to one too many mojitos! Need to come back in a couple of months for a proper fitting. Just realised that this time next year I’ll be married! Eek! June 15th 2009 Things are actually getting quite stressful now; there are so many things to deal with, colour schemes, favours, flowers, reception the list goes on! We had a good laugh last night making our own invitations –I think we cleared WH Smiths and Partners out of their fancy paper, card, stamps, ink and embellishments not to mention the fabric lady at Coventry Market, I didn’t realise I could be so fussy, I hope I’m not turning into a bridezilla! July 7th 2009 Had a great weekend, enjoyed the sunshine with my fiancé at the Godiva Festival and managed to sort the flowers out too! Tomlinsons are taking care of my bouquet, corsages, hair pieces and table arrangements.

WEDDING DATE | FEATURES September 20th 2009 Just came home from a lovely meal with the girls. There was a fantastic magician who was going round from table to table. I didn’t even know that they did this at Old Orleans, apparently ‘Max’ (the magician) comes to Coventry on rotating Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and every Sunday. I’m going to ask Oliver if we could book him for the reception! October 29th 2009 Where have the last five months gone since my last entry! I can’t believe how fast time is going, actually, speaking about time, I could do with popping into town today to fix my watch at Timpsons, it’s always stopping recently, and whilst I’m at it, I might as well pick her up some flowers from M&S, her favourite DVD from HMV, or, even better, some sexy lingerie from Ann Summers! October 30th 2009 I thought he would have booked the photographer by now, at this rate it’ll be a job lot of disposable cameras from Boots and we’ll tell the guests to take their own... November 2nd 2009 Getting there slowly! Just created our gift lists at Argos and Debenhams if only everything was that simple. November 10th 2009 Sometimes I wish that I could just disappear, I really do. The last few months have been extreme to say the least. Having changed her mind more times than I can remember; from pink to blue, to green to yellow, from large to small, back to front, I’m not sure I can cope with it anymore. Help me! Maybe I can buy a book to help me deal with the stress from Waterstones, a Grooms Guide to Self Help! December 15th 2009 My bridesmaids are not happy with my timing! I’ve arranged for them to come out with me in the new year to pick their dresses from Monsoon (I’m torn between two styles), I thought I was being savvy by waiting ‘til the new year for the sales but they’re all worried about going shopping with the inevitable post crimbo bloat! I’ve suggested they joined Fitness First For Women with me, a few spinning classes are bound to shift those excess pounds! December 20th 2009 It’s almost Christmas, one of the most magical times of the year, and I’m sitting here writing this after spending most of the day tying up favour boxes, never mind, I love it really, just won’t ever let myself be heard saying that out loud! It’s actually

getting pretty exciting now, only a few months left. Me and the lads had our final fittings at Mark Andrew Formal Hire today. January 10th 2010 I’m so glad Christmas is over! Now I can focus on the big day, I think between us we’re almost there! Sorted the dresses for the girls out today, I went with my first choice from Monsoon, got the shoes from Faith and I’m going to treat them all to this gorgeous necklace and earring set from H Samuel as a little thank you present. January 23rd 2010 Stag night tonight! It’s gonna be fantastic. Another excuse to go out with the lads, but this time, the rounds are on them! The lads have told me that I have to wear a “special” outfit and have placed clues around the city centre of what it’s going to be! I hope it’s not something too embarrassing from Ann Summers! Rumour has it, it’s a Wonder Woman outfit from Arcade Fancy Dress, oh the shame! February 21st 2010 I feel a bit rough today! Had my hen do last night, it started off so civilised! The girls all chipped in for me to have a pamper day at Renaissance, started off with a lovely massage and then got my hair, nails, make up and eyelashes done I felt so spoilt! We all went to Venture Portraits and had a photoshoot of us all together posing with champagne they’d picked up from Bodyfuel and some fabulous feather boas from Arcade Fancy Dress – and there was me thinking that they were for the evening do? Well the evening do, I’m not gonna lie, it’s a little bit hazy to say the least! I had the L plate badges, silly deeley boppers, dare cards –the works, all courtesy of Anne Summers and my Chief Bridesmaid! We definitely went to the bars in Priory Place, Bar No 3, Maison and Dogma, then I think we went to every bar at the Skydome before heading into Lava/ Ignite, I’m going to have to call Emma to get the full details! February 22nd 2010 Katie had her hen weekend ... well what can I say apart from her waking me up at 4am and insisting that she gave me a full recap of the night! Shame she couldn’t remember any of it! She then insisted that she needed to eat and demanded I cook for her! Good job I had a microwavable curry from Iceland in the fridge – she’ll never know the difference! What an end to my night, I had the football on earlier in the evening and a gorgeous pizza from Pizza Express all to myself… sheer bliss. Better get used to sharing soon I suppose! Feel Alive Spring 2010 17

March 5th 2010 The big day tomorrow, I’m so nervous and excited all at the same time. It’s so been worth all of the hassle and stress to get to this point. I’m going to have all of my family and friends around me tonight, such a great atmosphere. My best man has shown me pictures of when we were mates way back in school, seems such a long time ago now. We used to hang around the city centre, Ice Skating at Planet Ice, see a film at the ODEON and swimming at Coventry Sports Centre. It seems like yesterday and now I’m grown up and getting married – scary! March 21st 2010 Well I guess this is the end of our little diary, we took it with us on our honeymoon (which I might like to add was an excellent late deal from Thomson!) and had a good giggle at all the entries! Our wedding was the best day of my life, the weather was great, St Mary’s Guildhall was stunning and I was surrounded by all our friends and family, the best bit was when the Registrar pronounced us man and wife, I am now officially Mrs Wright! Planning the wedding was hard at times but definitely worth it, I just don’t know what I’ll be doing with all this spare time now! All retailers are based within Coventry city centre.

‘The Business’ competition will see a local entrepreneur win a retail premises in the popular City Arcade in Greyfriars Walk. City Arcade is a haven for savvy shoppers as it is packed full of unique and quirky independent retailers, from Tomlinsons the award winning florist to Drop in the Ocean a wholesome health food shop with everything in

between. The missing piece of the puzzle is unit 14, the soon to be occupied by ‘The Business’ winner. During the lead up to the decision making process we caught up with two short listed entrants just before the final verdict and they told us why they should win “the Business”...

Name: Gem ma Owen Current Occup ation: Self empl oyed seamstress – St itched Up! Education: Nat ional Diploma in Fashion Design at City College Coven try Hometown: C oventry

“I initially heard about the competition from an article in the Coventry telegraph and then later in the day on Mercia, my friends and family also heard about it and all thought I should go for it! Since leaving college two years ago it has been my goal to set up my own premises as at the moment I run my business from home. I think this competition is a fantastic opportunity for someone to set up a business that has the talent but not the funding. It’s a really unique concept and I’m so excited to be taking part. My idea is a completely new business for the city, I don’t know of any other retailer within the city which presents the same service. I offer design, dressmaking and alterations services. I also design, make and sell other items including cushions, headbands, brooches and purses; really, it’s all about producing handcrafted items in funky fabrics as well as made to measure garments. I feel that the premises in city arcade would be perfect for showcasing and selling my handiwork as the area is known for its specialist individual retailers.

26 Feel Alive Spring 2010

In terms of making this a sustainable business I’d like to do various marketing and PR campaigns including leaflets, brochures and posters as well as more subliminal marketing such as my friends and customers wearing my garments and promoting my business. I would also like to reap the benefits from ‘word of mouth’ advertising. In a world full of big name brands I think that independent retailers often have a real challenge to set themselves apart and make their business commercially viable. My business proposal offers individual and unique items which engage interest, my stock is of an extremely high quality and I also provide an exceptional personal service. My passion has always been for fashion. As a child I wanted to be a wedding dress designer so my ambitions have always remained in the same area. I have also worked at Coventry sewing centre doing alterations and repairs, and attended a four week corset making course, assisting in teaching weekly dressmaking classes and built upon my existing customer service skills.

My time at the sewing centre, gave me a sound knowledge on specialised machines. I have also had my work commissioned by Be Gorgeous in Warwick. My five year plan is to be running a successful retail outlet (hopefully in City Arcade!) selling my unique garments, accessories, fabrics & haberdashery and to be an established name not just in Coventry but across the region.“

Name: Lucy ra Fitter ation: Lingerie/B Current Occup pher and Pet Photogra ons Visual H BA n: Educatio m (Photography) fro Communication sign de tute of art and Birmingham Insti entry Hometown: Cov “My proposal is to have a cool, modern shop with a pet photography studio where you can buy anything and everything to pamper your pet. I would like animals to be welcome in the shop, to get their portrait taken and maybe even pick up a new toy. The main goal of my shop idea is to reinforce people’s relationship with their animals. There are a lot of fun and individual shops in the arcade. I love the fancy dress shop and the Chinese medicine shop gives great acupuncture. I think the fact my shop will be different indicates it will fit in perfectly with the existing retailers. Also if I am allowed dogs in the shop, I think they’ll be walking their owners past the Stuart Francis Butchers on the way out! PR and marketing wise, I believe I am good at networking and try to make use of any contact that I meet. I think the most important part of a business is offering great customer service. If my customers go away happy – then this in itself is an advert for my business. For people who maybe didn’t enter this competition and are toying with the idea of setting up their own business I have one thing to say to them: Don’t hold back and wait, just go for it! I wish I did this a long time ago and feel like

I am fulfilling my dream now. It’s easy to think of reasons not to do it but you should cross these things if and when they happen and remember the world is your oyster. If I don’t manage to win ‘The Business’ competition I will still pursue this, my passion for photography and animals is too strong just to drop my idea. I have taken a lot of steps in creating my business and don’t plan on leaving any of that behind – I plan to move forward! Winning the competition would help an awful lot though as the prize is invaluable. I am really nervous about pitching my idea to ‘The Bosses’ I’ll probably have to think of a few tips to cope with the nerves, like imagining the bosses with no clothes on they say that helps don’t they!? I don’t have a traditional business background and believe I am more creative than business like. However, when you are very passionate about what you do, I think you will take on any task to achieve your goal. In terms of business, the jobs I have worked in have made me good at communicating with people. Professionally speaking I admire anyone who has the guts to take a risk and make something work. For Business acumen – Alan Sugar.

For creativity, I have always admired the guys at Showstudio.com. Nick Knight is an amazing photographer as he is always out there creating and trying something new. I will really miss Alexander McQueen’s work. I loved how he challenged all aspects of fashion. It wasn’t just about how the clothes looked, he challenged the way in which shows are presented, the interaction between model and viewer and the whole creative process too. For me making an independent business successful relies on the uniqueness of the offer. There is also a trend for more ethical buying and by the consumer buying from a smaller retailer, they are supporting their local area as well as building up a relationship of trust. I think people feel they can trust smaller businesses as they can appear more honest. In 5 years time I can see myself hopefully enjoying my position as Pet Photographer Extraordinaire! I also have plans to shoot a coffee table book about famous pets. I am building up my brand name to get to this stage. The book focuses on celebrities’ relationships with their animals and how their pet is one of the few that sees them as they really are!”

Miss Getting Carrie-d away with

Coventry Let’s face it girls, it’s been a long time coming!

This spring we are finally able to welcome back our old friends Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda. These four New Yorkers have it all and it’s hard not to feel a slight twinge of jealousy towards them, especially Carrie.

The woman is an enigmatic style icon with a lifestyle (not to mention shoe collection!) to die for and if that wasn’t enough, the last time we saw her she was marrying the man of her dreams...

Melissa Annie Rose

28 Feel Alive Spring 2010

Kirstie

We took the city’s very own It-girls, Miss Coventry 2010, Kirstie Logan and finalists, Annie Rose Crone, Melissa Mullen and Sarah Key and gave them a taste of the day in the life of our favourite fashionistas in the run up to the Final.

Sarah

Here’s how we got on... The girls started their day by calming their pre final jitters with a mix of lattes and hot chocolates in the gorgeous new coffee house, Caffe Italia on Trinity Street and in true girly fashion the conversation quickly drifted onto fashion, boys and of course the imminent final! After deliberating on which cakes to takeaway, the four moved down to 17a Hair Salon on Spon Street for a few hours of serious pampering.

MISS COVENTRY | FEATURES Anni Rose said: “I’ve had an absolutely amazing day, I wish I could do it everyday. I was really impressed by Caffe Italia, it’s so refreshing to have an independent cosy coffee house that is full of character right on my doorstep, I’ll definitely be calling back for one of their lattes again soon!” Kirstie enjoyed the experience from start to finish: “I loved being the centre of attention and a high maintenance glamour queen for the day and was spoilt for choice when shopping, decisions decisions!”

The staff at 17a pulled out all the stops for our hopeful contestants including a luxurious foot spa, perfect for when you’ve been wearing skyscraper heels all day! The highlight for the girls was sampling the minx manicures. 17a are the first salon to have teamed up with Nailworks to offer this exclusive and highly sought after nail art... If it’s good enough for the likes of Beyonce, GaGa and Rhianna it’s good enough for our girls! The salon is also leading the way for the introduction of the new straightening irons set to rival the much loved GHD, ladies make way for Cloud Nine! Our finalists were so impressed with the new irons they each invested in a pair! Once the girls had been sufficiently preened it was time to hit the shops but not before calling in at Pizza Hut for a cheeky stuffed crust, and you thought models didn’t eat! Refuelled and ready to go, the girls made their way down to Greyfriars walk and called into Gladrags and Garb to pick up some unique and individual pieces for the big day. After hours of scouring the rails Annie Rose and Kirstie picked up some fabulous outfits from Garb, as well as one off jewellery and dresses from Gladrags. All this shopping and pampering makes for thirsty work so it was time to pay a visit to the glamorous Bar Maison in Priory Place. As they made their way to Priory Place the glittering jewellery in Silver Glade proved to be a slight distraction! Finally after a long day of pampering , gossiping and shopping our lovely ladies were able to wind down and treat themselves to some of the finest cocktails in Coventry, courtesy of the bohemian Bar Maison.

Sarah wanted to take the foot spa home with her! “The spa treatment was amazing, it’s hard work wearing heels and my feet look and feel gorgeous, I was so impressed with the minx manicures, it’s such a simple idea but the results are outstanding, I’m definitely a minx convert! Melissa’s highlight was undeniably the extensions “I can’t tell you how much I love my hair, the hair raisers extensions were the best I’ve ever tried, this is definitely how I want it to look for the final, I’m so excited!” the 28th May. FEATURES | CITY OF INVENTION

Be !nventive is a unique Coventry initiative that seeks to define, establish and promote Coventry’s ‘vision and proposition’ regionally, nationally and internationally, as a city of invention. the city, throughout its history has been a major force in the advancement of commerce, culture and social policy and more recently has contributed to some of Britain’s greatest engineering and technological achievements. today the city is continuing to build upon its inventive streak by providing opportunities and support for new innovative and entrepreneurial organisations and industries. Coventry companies and organisations are leading the way in industries like geothermal technologies, medical technology, electric vehicle development, defence, and virtual space technologies.

34 Feel Alive Spring 2010

Be !nventive In this edition Mick McLaughlin talks to Ian Howe, Commercial Director, Climax Cars, Coventry, whose lightweight, environmentally friendly performance car is making tracks in the automotive industry. What was the idea behind the sports racer? The idea behind the Climax Sports Racer was simply to create an exclusive, highly desirable, light weight British performance car built in Coventry utilising environmentally friendly technologies.

In a world full of high performance cars, what sets the climax sports racer apart from its British built rivals like the Caparo t1 and Ariel Atom?

The Climax Sports Racer has been designed with road and track ability in mind and fundamental to this is an excellent power to weight ratio. Whilst the Ariel Atom is an excellent enthusiast’s car with superb performance, its predominant focus is that of a track car. The Climax Sports Racer reflects a more balanced approach towards the aesthetic glamour associated with ownership and the performance package, this will enhance both the driving and ownership experience. With regards comparisons to the T1 we have not looked at providing outright performance at the expense of driveability, reliability and cost of ownership. As well as the typical design elements such as aesthetics and performance are there any other key factors which you took into consideration such as environmentally friendly alternatives? Additional to creating the Climax Sports Racer as a showcase for the design abilities of our team, it was decided from the out set, that environmental considerations would be designed in to the package. This is prevalent in our work with Coventry University on bio fuel technology but also in the extensive use of Aluminium as the core material for body and chassis which is not only light and strong but it

CITY OF INVENTION | FEATURES is inherently environmentally friendly as aluminium can be recycled, which is not true of Carbon Fibre or Glass Fibre for instance.

events the reaction from the industry and public was extremely positive, and added to the motivation and momentum to seek the funding to put the car into production.

And the all important tech specs? 0-60? BHP? Fuel Consumption?

Were there any hurdles to overcome during the design and build of the racer?

The power plant we are using is a 4.6 litre V8 which will provide either 345 in normally aspirated or 450 BHP with the supercharged option. Our performance will offer a sub 3.7 seconds 0-60 and a maximum speed of 170mph + dependent on engine choice. This is possible as the cars kerb weight will be in the only 907 kg allowing excellent power to weight ratio, which also assists fuel consumption levels at 25 mpg plus. As a lot of the team are Coventry University graduates, was it important for you to base the company in Coventry? One of the brand core values is to utilise the extensive skill set and experience in the auto manufacturing that exists within Coventry, that is why we are located here and believe will be at the forefront of a recent resurgence in the industry from Coventry. This is a very exciting time for auto manufacturing in Coventry, Jaguar are fast becoming resurgent again in the executive car market, and of course the news recently that Spyker Cars have moved production of their super car to Coventry specifically to access the skills and knowledge of low volume car production is very positive. Do you still have links to the university? Yes, we have a working partnership with the Department of Sonochemistry at the University to assist with their research in to Third Generation bio fuels. These fuels are also known as algae fuels which produce 30% more energy yield per acre relative to crop based fuel production, which is a positive factor for this type of fuel. We are providing the engineering base in terms of engine use for their research and believe that this is not only very exciting research but allows us as a progressive company to be at the forefront of such programs. Additionally, we are looking to utilise new materials and research that comes out of the university. Have you taken the car to any shows or exhibitions, if so what was the reception? The concept car has been exhibited at the Salon Prive event at Hurlingham, London, Top Marques in Monaco and the Festival of Speed at Goodwood. At all these

The creation of the Climax Sports Racer concept car is a true reflection of determination by a small team of passionate engineers and designers and shows what can be achieved if the desire is strong enough. That said, the car’s creation was aided and accomplished with help and generosity of both individuals and companies in the Coventry area who shared the desire and passion to get the car created. This would arguably not have been achieved in any other city. Is the car in production now? The Sports Racer is planned for production this year as we are in the process of raising capital for this to happen and have worked hard on developing a business model that provides not only an efficient and cost effective platform for production, but is also based on an experienced engineering and financial management team. Have you had any orders from anyone rich and famous? During the shows we had several very high profile enquiries from enthusiasts to Royalty, which highlighted our belief that the car was pitched at a market that would appreciate this type of car. What’s next for Climax Cars, any new models or plans for expansion? The company plan to produce just over 200 of the Sports Racer making it very exclusive and collectable. However, as the Sports Racer platform is designed to accommodate future models, a GTS version, which will include a roof and a more touring style interior, will be launched during the Sports Racer production run. The GTS will likely become our flagship product and be produced in larger numbers and this will culminate in the creation of a Halo product to showcase the ultimate ability of the company in design and engineering skills and this will develop the steps to a GT homologated race car, with the goal to race the 24 hours Le Mans. Our expansion will be flexible to accommodate the production of our cars, but we have also been asked to assist

design and engineer for other companies, and it is likely that you may see Climax influences in other cars. What new developments do you envisage in the future for the car industry as a whole? Obviously it has been tough on the car industry in the last few years, and survival has to be a result of smart financial decisions as well as products that can be efficiently made and this means that low volume niche car makers will start to fill in the gaps vacated by larger companies. However, the central change to the car industry over the next decade will of course be the move to more economical and sustainable vehicles, with alternative fuels at the forefront. There are already a number of alternative strategies, such as electric, bio fuels and others and the debates continue as to which route is best, but it may be that not one direction becomes the standard, but choice prevailing. Included in this will be the use of new materials such as flax and hemp extractions which enhance performance as they will be lighter, durable and more environmentally friendly and sustainable. And finally where did the name come from, is it a reference to the old FWMV Coventry Climax V8 engine which powered the likes of Lotus and Cooper in the 1960s? At an early stage of concept it was clear that the company must be associated with Coventry on as many levels as possible, and the use of the Climax name evokes memories of the tremendously successful era for British Formula One cars in the 50’s and 60’s. Albeit, Climax Cars is a new company with a modern brand and business objectives, echoing successes of the Formula One engines built in Coventry. We have received generous reactions from both the public and industry and we feel that we have an obligation to keep the name resonating with our brand progress, and thus the progress of the City of Coventry.

“It’s my most vulnerable album to date,” P!nk admits that it felt scary yet liberating to reach new depths of vulnerability on such tracks as Please Don’t Leave Me, a painfully honest love song disguised by upbeat melodies...

P!nk’s astonishing worldwide Funhouse Tour promises to dazzle fans with a supercharged high octane performance of carnival inspired carnage. P!nk has never been one to shy away from the limelight, she’s renowned as not being afraid to speak her mind, bare her soul, or share her deepest feelings in her lyrics. As she casually confers, “I have no choice. It’s what I do.” And she does it so well, with 23 million album sales, two Grammy Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, and a string of UK top 10 hit singles including, Just like a Pill, So What, Stupid Girls, You Make Me Sick and Get The Party Started are proof enough that this fierce tiger with the heart of a pussycat is at the very top of her game. Her fifth studio album, Funhouse sees P!nk getting even more personal, more exposed, and more revealing. “It’s my most vulnerable album to date,” says P!nk, 29, who has no problem ‘fessing up to the fact that the split from her husband, motocross star Carey Hart, is the subject of some songs on Funhouse. “On my first record, Can’t Take Me Home, I was so enraged at this guy and that was cathartic for me. M!ssundaztood was very personal and even more therapeutic. I remember talking about the song ‘Family Portrait’ in interviews and just crying. Each record got a little deeper and more cathartic than the last. In two years time I will probably have worked through all of my issues!”

“It’s like letting your guard down and admitting I’m human. I’m a girl. We all want to be loved and love, that’s all we want.” She adds “I Don’t Believe You is one of my favourite songs because it’s just so naked. It’s like taking a deep breath and saying, here I am. Take me. Take your best shot. Mean is a country-Aerosmith-rock song that asks, ‘How did we get so mean?’ Everything starts out so yummy. Where did it go wrong? How is it that you once were holding the door for me and now I’m slamming it in your face?” But as P!nk said, Funhouse isn’t just a breakup album. Bad Influence sees our girl return to her popular brand of feel good party song that makes no apologies for wilding out with your girlfriends once in a while. “I’m with the Hindus on that one,” laughs P!nk “Pleasure for pleasure’s sake is not a guilty sin.” As for the title, Funhouse, P!nk explains “I look at life like a carnival. Clowns are supposed to be happy, but they are really scary. Carnivals are supposed to be fun, but really they are kind of creepy. But, we go and we buy candy floss and we force our laughter and we get on rides and we strap ourselves in and we do it. I guess that’s like life to me, and love. Love is supposed to be fun, but it can sometimes be really scary. And the funhouse mirrors that make you look so distorted that you don’t recognise yourself and you ask yourself, ‘How did I get here? How do I get out of here?’ But, you think that you want to do it again. That is the same as love and life. It’s basically a metaphor for being in love and for life.”

With its mix of sad, thoughtful love songs and fun, upbeat, feisty rock anthems. P!nk has achieved exactly what she wanted to on the Funhouse album. “It feels good to get people not just emoting and releasing all that energy, but getting angry and motivated too. It’s group therapy.”

k r a M & Sam

ut le rogues to find o b va lo e th ith w We caught up … am Sam and Mark what’s next for te Sam Nixon and Mark Rhodes have come a long way since being pipped to the post by Michelle McManus in the second series of Pop Idol. The lads had a UK number one single before making the transition into TV presenters and since then have appeared in a string of shows including the award winning Who Wants to Be a Superhero? Valentines Day 2010 marked a very special shared moment for the boys as they broadcast their first show on Mercia. Right, you first appeared on our screens in 2003 on Pop Idol, looking back, what were your ambitions and aspirations? S. Well it was a bit of a weird one for me, at the time I was only 17 and was training to be a chef and I thought I’d give it a go and see what happened, it was something new and I thought - why not? M. Well I’m a bit older than Sam so I’d just been working in a load of dead end jobs, but I’d just taken out a loan for some musical equipment and had been playing gigs around the Midlands whilst working in telesales. I’d seen people there who had been working in telesales for like 100 years and I knew that it wasn’t for me so I thought why not, put all my eggs in one basket and went for it. How did you make the transition from pop stars to TV presenters? M. Simon Fuller put us together as he saw the potential in us being a double act, not necessarily as singers, I think even then he knew we’d be better suited to presenting, whether it be on the TV or radio… S. Our TV break came about when we guest presented TOTP Reloaded with Fearne Cotton after that we were asked to cover for her when she was on holiday, Fearne came back and we were like the lodgers who never left! It was a great Saturday morning show, I thought we made a good threesome!

When did you decide to go into radio? M. We were approached just after Christmas to do our own show and I think that it was something that both of us wanted to get into, it seemed like a natural progression from TV presenting. S. I think as we are such good mates and are both massive chatterboxes it was a natural progression really. The great thing about the radio is no one can see you so we can get away with being a bit scruffier and eating lots of cakes and no one will know! (they will now boys!) Are you still planning on working in TV too? Both. Yea! S. We love what we’re doing and will keep doing both for as long as we can. M. It keeps us out of trouble! When you were growing up what was your favourite kids TV show? S. That’s weird we were just talking about this the other day, do you remember Knightmare? Haha yes! S. Well they should definitely bring that back, it was awesome! (Knightmare was a fantasy adventure game show which featured heavy use of blue screen technology and was broadcast during the late 80s and early 90s). Since conducting the interview we have found that there is a bring back Knightmare website, Sam you may have to sign up! M. I liked Mike and Angelo!

Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity Chat Celebrity What was the most fun show you’ve worked on? M. TOTP Reloaded was great, but I’d prefer to do it now as that was our first presenting stint and we didn’t really have any experience. I’d have to say TMi is our baby and we get really involved with the planning and the comedy in it. I can’t believe we’ve done 4 series already! S. It is a great family show which is really aimed at the kids, I like the fact that we have left our mark on Saturday morning TV. Do you miss singing, is there any chance of you going back there? S. We only released 2 singles so I’m not sure on that one! We have recently put some bands together though so, how can I say this without sounding daft… life is sweet! M. No! Oh mate, that was soo cheesey! Seeing as your first show on Mercia was broadcast on Valentines day, what is the most romantic thing you’ve ever done? And the cheesiest? M. Oh no, well on Millennium eve I proposed to my ex girlfriend, (can you make sure you put ex there!) over a karaoke machine! S. In front of the whole pub! Cackles! M. The romantic one would be booking a holiday to the Maldives with my girlfriend (who is also now an ex, are you sure that you’re putting these down as exes?) and Valentines Day happened to fall while we were out there. S. When I met my girlfriend we stayed out all night on my balcony drinking Bucks Fizz out of mugs just chatting and getting to know each other so I think it was on our anniversary, or it could have been a random Tuesday afternoon haha no it was our 1st anniversary I decked my balcony out with fairy lights and we did it all over again.

For those who are yet to tune in, what can listeners expect from your show? M. Just me and Sam having a laugh and a bit of banter. We also want to speak to as many people as possible, we do love a good ol’ chinwag! It’s gonna be a relaxed Sunday morning show. Do you get nervous before a live broadcast? S. Oh yeah definitely! Even now but the adrenaline always carries us through! You guys have known each other for years now, have you got any embarrassing secrets on each other you’d like to share? Silence, followed by giggling S. None that you can print! I suppose it’s not really that embarrassing but Mark is a bit metrosexual! He has so many lotions and potions but look at his face, he looks good! I’m a bit of a biter, not just my nails but the skin around them too, I suppose that’s quite embarrassing. If you could each pick any celebrity to be your new co host who would it be and why? S. I’d love to present with Nicole Shcler…Sch.. Sh.. er you know the one with from the Pussycat Dolls! She is hot! M. And there was me going for the sensible choice of Terry Wogan! Tut! Oh, actually can I change mine to Chris Evans, the man is a broadcasting legend! Where is your favourite place in Coventry? Both: The nightclubs!

Do you fancy England’s chances in the world cup? S. I’ll hand this one over to Mark the footy fan! M. D’ya know what, I really do this year! The only two teams which are better than us are Brazil and France. As long as Rooney and Gerrard stay fit we should be alright. We have a problem with our keeper but as long as the rest of the team do their job we’ll be ok and I can see us getting to the semi finals at least. (Marks last comment sparks a huge debate on English football). Do you watch the X factor? What advice would you give to hopeful contestants? S. I love it! Basically just go there and enjoy it for what it is. It was definitely the best thing I’ve ever done in terms of the opportunities it created. M. I’ll second that! S. Oh and also be nice to the crew and cameramen, don’t be a diva! Now that you guys are established disc jockeys what bands do you think will make it big this year? M. 30 Seconds to Mars would be my choice, they’ve got some great stuff out at the moment. S. I think JLS are amazing and definitely set for bigger and better things! Also the Saturdays and I’d like to hear more from Gabriella Cilmi, 2010 could be her year. M. Mcfly have been away for a while so I’m hoping that they will come back with some new material Any guilty pleasures lurking on your iPod? Both laugh M. Too many to mention! Roachford – Cuddly Toy is a classic! Peter Cetera and the Rocky soundtrack, which is great to listen to at the gym! S. Moving away from the 80s I’d have to say Hanson! M. Hanson aren’t a guilty pleasure!

Any plans to branch out with your own individual projects? S. I think we work best as a double act and we both really enjoy what we’re doing so not really! (Mark stays ominously silent). Are you a pair of Tweeters or Facebookers? S. I’m addicted to Facebook! For me FB is a very personal thing where I can keep in touch with friends and family but we do have a joint twitter account @samandmarktv which we use mainly for our fans. Tell us an interesting fact about yourselves? S. I’m 6’4”!! I was on Funhouse when I was younger and a band I was in won a battle of the bands at Noddy Holder’s jaunt in the Midlands! If you weren’t doing what you do what would you be? S. A chef! M. A holiday rep, I really wanted to travel and see the world but luckily in my line of work I get to do that anyway! Are you guys coming to the Godiva Festival this year and have you ever been before? M. We’d love to come, are we invited? Of course! S. Wicked, it’ll be our first Godiva! See you there then!

The Tin Angel Mercury nominated British singer songwriter and vocalist for Lamb, Lou Rhodes returns to Coventry with her third solo album “One Good Thing”. Rhodes will be releasing the album through The Cinematic Orchestra’s new label Motion Audio on March 14th 2010. Rhodes’s solo work is organic and rooted in folk music. She combines finely tuned acoustic guitars — the essence of almost every arrangement — with violin, double bass, and rich percussion. Lyrically, her songs can be described as extremely romantic, soulful and deeply personal.

Introducing Coventry’s new creative village For too long, Coventry’s vibrant creative sector has remained one of its best kept secrets. This highly active community, fed by two universities with over 35,000 students, has remained disparate and largely unseen. Plans to change this are well underway with the establishment of the city’s creative quarter in Far Gosford Street, next to Coventry University’s city centre campus. Branded as FarGo, the Quarter is set to become the home of the alternative – a buzzing area of specialist galleries, music venues shops, restaurants, offices and studios. The concept is based on areas like Camden and Brick Lane in London and will be anchored by a weekend market with live street performance. The city’s first designer hotel will form the gateway to the area. Ian Harrabin, the man behind the vision explains: “FarGo will bring creativity out of the shadows, to interface with the public and draw in the crowds. This street’s got ‘cred’, it is already home to some cool restaurants and shops, but there is scope for much much more. This ‘bohemian area’ is intended to encourage the growth of a community, with a freedom of thought and expression that is not obvious in the rest of the city centre. So far I have been knocked out by the spectrum of business interest ranging from IT to theatre.” For information on FarGo contact the Creative Hub +44 (0)24 (0)24 7678 76836297/8 2643 www.fargosfordstreet.com

FEATURES | VEGGIE

The city centre has an abundance of restaurants from cosy to cosmopolitan with everything in between. When one member of the Feel Alive team randomly decided to go vegetarian we took it upon ourselves to uncover the city’s best offerings of veggie friendly restaurants...

Browns

nte a r o t s i R a Calabri

Browns, is renowned amongst the city as specialists in vegetarian and vegan cuisine. The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, with ample seating. There is a definite bohemian vibe to the place and as a result it is extremely popular with students. The ever changing menu boasts at least 3 vegan options per day in addition to vegetarian options alongside the meat and fish dishes. All meals are served with a choice of two vegetables and potatoes. Our favourite meals were the Sweetcorn and Sweet Potato Chilli Cakes and the Garlic and Mushroom Filled Pancake, both at a very affordable £5.75! www.brownsindependentbar.co.uk Earl Street, Coventry

Relatively new on the scene in Coventry, this independent Italian restaurant is already making a big name for itself. Serving up traditional stone baked pizzas in a wood fired oven alongside tasty pasta dishes. www.ristorantedecalabria.co.uk Hay Lane, Coventry

Cosmo

Cosmo brings opulence and decadent dining to Coventry with the group’s largest venture, a 350 seater restaurant in the heart of the city. It takes its inspiration from some of Asia’s finest hotels, which brings stunning design to casual dining. Customers can enjoy as much as they like from over 120 authentic dishes, from 9 countries in the Far East and India – all for just one price. The vegetarian selection is extensive and the bean curd in black bean sauce is truly out of this world. www.cosmo-restaurant.com Corporation Street, Coventry

Dinner Party

If you’re the type of person who prefers dinner parties over dining out we strongly recommend paying a visit to Waterstones in Market Way and investing in a copy of celebrity chef, Simon Rimmer’s new recipe book, The Accidental Vegetarian, this book is packed full of mouthwatering recipes that could turn even the most diehard carnivore, if you’re feeling adventurous try your hand at the Filo Strudel with Port Wine Sauce. VEGGIE | FEATURES

The award winning Turmeric Gold is renowned across the region for serving up the best of the best when it comes to traditional Indian cuisine. The restaurant itself spans two floors which are usually always full in the evenings so make sure you book in advance. The menu has a range of vegetarian options including Dakeswari Aloo Paneer, Bhindi Chana Balti and Paneer Shashlick. www.turmericgold.co.uk Spon Street, Coventry

Dogma has a fantastic selection of offers and promotions on over the week, including 2 for 1 burgers on a Thursday. We particularly like the lunchtime sandwich and a glass of wine for £5, well who wouldn’t! The roasted vegetables and mozzarella wrap and spinach and ricotta ravioli are really tasty and even some of the non veggies amongst us went for the meat free options! www.dogmabars.com Priory Place, Coventry

China red is well worth a visit, it’s all you can eat menu has a staggering selection of dishes from across the orient. Each and every dish is cooked to order and we recommend going in a group so you can pick and choose between yourselves. Our favourite dishes were the vegetarian Yuk Sung and the Stir fried tofu and vegetables in black pepper sauce. The decor in the restaurant is simple yet stunning, with touches of bamboo and a scattering of traditional Chinese lanterns. www.china-red.co.uk Hertford Street, Coventry

A regular favourite with the team for after work drinks and nibbles. Old Orleans is famed for serving up Cajun inspired cuisine. The sizzling mushroom and Quorn fajitas are definitely not to be missed. The restaurant also features a range of vegetarian pasta, burgers and salads. Look out for the offers and promotions on food which will save a few quid for the next round!

Munch Box

Munch Box is ideal for grabbing a tasty lunch to go. The menu offers a huge selection of choice for vegetarians. We particularly like the noodle box with stir fried vegetables and chilli paneer cheese drizzled with sweet chilli sauce, complete with chopsticks, all for just £2.70! Munch Box also offer some more conventional lunch dishes such as Jacket Potatoes, Baguettes, Wraps and Toasties with a great variety of meat free options, all at very reasonable prices. Hay Lane, Coventry

www.oldorleans.com SkyDome, Coventry

Think Nando’s and you instinctively think of chicken, however, they do offer a selection of veggie friendly dishes, including the gorgeous roasted Portobello mushroom, halloumi cheese and chilli jam option which you can have in a burger, pitta or wrap. They also offer a tasty veggie burger or bean burger in addition to fresh salads. The peri peri chips are best washed down with a cool, crisp bottle of superbock. The Portuguese inspired restaurant has built up a reputation as a peri peri hotspot with a laid back atmosphere. www.nandos.co.uk The Old Ribbon Factory, Coventry Feel Alive Spring 2010 45
