Dear Friends of Light House,

Two decades ago, Light House Studio taught its first workshop, “Video Diaries,” to a handful of students in the basement of the Jefferson Theater. The buildings have changed, but our students’ talents for telling stories have continued. In fact, they’re so good at it that in 2019 their films were accepted into a record-breaking 31 national and international film festivals, proving their abiliity to compete on a national level with major awards including a Silver Medal at the New York International Film Awards, Best Animation at the Sunny Side Up Film Festival and Best National High School Documentary at the Wildcat Spirit Film Festival.

During the ten years I’ve served as Director of Light House, I’ve seen the organization grow from serving 270 children to over 1,700 and our partnerships expand from 19 other nonprofit organizations and schools to 68. None of this would have been possible without you. Thank you for your continued support and your belief in our mission to teach storytelling through film to any student who wants to learn. Last year, 80% of our 1,700+ students attended at reduced or no cost. We look forward to seeing you at the renovated Vinegar Hill Theatre. Look out for the announcement about the unveiling of our new studios.

Many of you have seen the construction at the Vinegar Hill Theatre. In April 2019, we broke ground on the addition of two teaching studios with the goal of completing them by summer 2020 in time for our 20th year celebration. Last summer, we had to place 85 children on our Summer Film Academy wait list due to lack of teaching space. The necessary studios will help us accommodate these students going forward. Having successfully completed the fundraiser for the addition, we continue to raise funds for Phase III, the preservation fund, which will keep the Vinegar Hill Theatre operating in perpetuity. With the studios underway, we’ve also launched a “Save a Seat” campaign so that we can replace the badly worn seats at the Theatre.

“Light House is very laid back, and allows for a creative vision to come into fruition, not to mention the extreme knowledge of film that each instructor brings.” --Emmett, 10th grade

"It felt like a very unique opportunity for our child to learn movie making as a form of creative self expression that I am not sure she would otherwise have access to. She really enjoyed herself and it was great to see her making friends and feeling confident."
