Message from the President

cva is launching the new academic year with several exciting new digs. In an effort to give cva programming identifiable homes, we are pleased to introduce new facilities at Blair Arcade on the corner of Selby and Western avenues, down the hallway from Common Good Books, below Nina’s Coffee Shop. This new facility, a beautifully refurbished space, will house cva’s

Student Lounge and a suite of offices that will be the new home for student life and student support services. In addition, the Foundation Program will enjoy a wireless studio environment for its two dimensional design and color courses. Blair Arcade will also host a new illustration studio. This marvelous new Blair Arcade space replaces the former photo studios in the Marquette building. You might be asking, where did the photography department move? They are now located in newly renovated, state of the art studios at cva’s Western Building. Please visit the Western Building to see the new facilities. This is just the beginning

of the long-term plan to give each department a centrally located and identifiable home. The cva leadership team has been busy building relationships and raising funds to support these facilities initiatives, to build scholarship funds, and to meet programming needs. I am looking forward to an exciting fall and seeing everyone back on campus. ann ledy President and Chief Academic Officer

in memoriam – richard charles yakel The college was saddened to hear that former trustee, Richard Charles Yakel, passed away on January 16, 2011. Mr. Yakel was a trustee from 1975–89, serving as vice-president of the Board of Directors and then board president from 1986–89. He, along with Virginia Rahja and David White, took the helm of the School of the Associated Arts (a former name of cva) after the death of founder Lowell Bobleter. The educational philosophy of the school continued its focus on the individual development of each student by fostering creative, intellectual, emotional, and aesthetic growth. When Mr. Yakel left the board, the school had changed its name to the College of Associated Arts and the

seeds for future growth and expansion had been laid. Mr. Yakel was born in Illinois in 1930, grew up in that state, and graduated from the University of Illinois. After serving in the U.S. Army he joined 3m in Saint Paul and spent his entire professional career with the company he loved. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, beloved grandchildren, and many relatives and friends.

Perspectives in Fine Art Series: Deceptive Distance This exhibition, opening September 15, brings together six Twin Cities based artists whose work engages with the farreaching consequences of September 11, 2001. Their work commemorates, imagines, and questions the deceptive distance of geographically remote warfare, bringing it closer to home and making it more intimate in the process. But the images also reflect on the ways war is consumed visually from afar, as well as on the conditions for and repercussions of such spectatorship. Featured artists include: Harriet Bart, Laura Crosby, Vesna Kittelson, Ana Lois-Borzi, Megan Nozik Rye, and Megan Vossler. Curated by Christina Schmid. Juana Berrio: Inhabitants in a Parallel Universe Mirroring the exhibition style of a history museum, Juana Berrio presents the existence of two living American citizens whose families migrated from faraway lands over the last century. With both families having ended their migrations in the Twin Cities, one coming from Europe and the other from Africa, this show displays the personal albeit anonymous belongings, trinkets, and loose change of the journey
