Rod “Rocket” Phillips

Well another year has passed and another year of on field and off field success for this great football club. Sure we may have not won a premiership but for the club to be able to have a chance in the Grand Final to try to go back to back and defend last year’s flag was a huge step forward in the development of this footy club. The structure is now in place for this club for the future to have success in all grades and really become a powerhouse of the competition. Once again the club was led superbly by Earl and Gravy in making sure this club is headed in the right direction. A great deal of credit should go to these two who have made sure that high standards are met at this club. To the A grade I am sure you boys as you have shown in the past will not accept second and will strive even harder to gain premiership success. The club wants to thank you for a fantastic year and one in which this club is really proud of your efforts in particular the way you represented Wesley Curtin. To the A ressies it was probably a year that we learnt a lot. It shows that if only a few train it is too much of a burden to place on a few and it will show game day. It is major in the development of this club that this grade is successful. I am hoping that a major effort by the boys next year will turn things around. A massive thank you to Grant for all the efforts he has not only put into the Ressies but also his tireless help to Earl and the boys. Budgie took over the colts this year and although they did not make finals Sam has laid a great platform for him and the boys next year. Being a very young side things can only look up from here and I can’t wait to watch their development next year. Johnny Edmo stepped up to take the 3’s this year and walked into plenty of sides stacked with old experienced players. The same probably applies as with the ressies in that too much was left to too few. I am sure with more training and commitment this side can taste success. Daniel Drew is a leader of men. He always is able to bring people together and this year was no exception. Great effort from the all the 4’s to make another preliminary final. Your determination to be successful is a credit to all concerned. Once again Willo showed what a great clubman he is in taking on one of the hardest jobs in the club in coaching the 5’s. With other sides staking teams it made the task very hard but the boys stuck to their guns and fought the whole year out. Scotty Hobbs and the second colts. Once again this team shows us that by sticking together and with great belief and hard work anything is possible. It is always great to watch how Scotty and his side go about their business. This side as well as Scotty have just developed over the last two years into a fantastic bunch and deserve every success. Scotty’s humor is a bonus. To the physios in Anne, Heidi, Simonne and Maddy we can’t thank you enough. Everybody really appreciates all your efforts and the club would not be the same without you. I know some of you have now finished your degree and we wish you all the best. The Committee; Tom Evans – Great to see Tommy get best clubman. Year in year out Tommy has looked after the clubs finances and it is one of if not the most important job in the club. Great effort Tommy and an award richly deserved. To Mark Hayter and who continues to strive to make this club successful on and off the field is truly an inspiration to us all. Once again Dean Diamond continues to just put hours into this football club. These two gentlemen are of massive assistance to me and just make sure that this club ticks over every week. Two great men. Martin Edmunds just gives to the club. The time he spends as registrar and doing the things behind the scenes shows the character of such a young man. Gerry Mabarrack has taken the football manager’s role to a new level. He is always looking how to improve this footy club and his humor keeps us all in great spirits. To Jessie,Hobbsy,Chummy,Al Smith,Rafe and everybody that helped out on the social committee we would all wish to thank you.

Special mention to Grant Metcalf on obtaining life membership. To play 300 games is a major effort but I also have had the chance to see how often this man off the field sticks his hand up to help this club. The Saturday game for “Metters 300th showed just how well respected this guy is and he is a very worthy recipient. To the wives and partners of everybody the club really appreciates your understanding and support. I would like to thank Peter Hayter and Margot for their unquestioned loyalty to this club. Pete spends all day Saturday at this club making sure everybody in comfortable in their job. Their efforts go a long way in making this club the envy of every other club. The same applies to Judy and Mel who make us the friendliest and most organized club in the competition. Well done girls. To David Burton who always is there when I need a favour done and who works tirelessly for this club. To Mark Hayter, Sue Rickleman, Josie Cooper and Anne Pride who have turned Pink Tiger day into an event that has not only brought comfort to the women who benefit but have placed this footy club in a position that all other sporting clubs in Australia could only dream of. To raise $100,000 in only four years is an amazing feat in itself and you should all be congratulated in turning this event into such a major event on any calendar. Once again to Glenn Walker and Serge Amaranti at Phoenix Insurance and Phil Zoiti at the Broken Hill Hotel who provide sponsorship so this footy club can achieve success. With your ongoing support it has played a major role in placing this footy club at the top of the tree. On finishing I owe so much to this club. Not only has it given me great thrills but the friendships and fun that have come my way I really feel privileged. I want to thank the club for allowing me to be the President. It is a job that is most enjoyable. Everybody who belongs to this club makes this club. Never accept second best because you and the club always deserve the best. The more you put into this club the more it pays you back. We always should strive to make the people and the club the best. See you all next year. Rod Phillips

EARL SPALDING

A GRADE Although we fell at the last hurdle and couldn’t quite repeat our successes of the past 2 years, I think in some respects our season will be viewed as being just as fruitful. To be able to show our maiden A grade premiership wasn’t just a flash in the pan (especially considering how much more competitive the league was this year) and that we have become a big part of the changing of the guard in terms of consistently challenging for premierships was a great achievement. A massive part of this change has been a realisation by the playing group that continued success is only possible with a solid fitness base obtained through hard work in pre-season. In my 5 years at the club, this stands out as being the main catalyst to our change in fortunes. Our season started well with 2 unspectacular but solid practice match victories against B grade opposition in North Fremantle & Bullcreek Leeming. This gave us the confidence we needed going into our first round match, undermanned & away against our arch enemy Trinity Aquinas. The 8 goal victory in hot conditions is certainly right up there with the best wins I’ve been involved with at the club. The highlight of the day being the unearthing of 3 solid defenders in Mikey Robbins, Tommy Payton (who unfortunately had to return to Melbourne during the year, but we hope to see return next season) & Darcy Reader. Unfortunately like previous seasons when we’ve had a fantastic win and 2 weeks to think about it (due to the Easter break), our next 2 weeks were pretty ordinary with losses away to West Coast & at home on Pink Tiger day to Uni. We managed to win 9 out of the next 10 games, with fantastic away wins against Kalamunda & Uni and our only loss being in the wet at home to Trinity Aquinas in the return fixture, to really set up our season and a top 3 finish. So despite losing 3 out of our last 5 games (2 of these against minor premiers CBC in a weird fixturing glitch and the other a monumental upset against bottom side Swan Athletic in the slush of the worst weather we’ve seen on a Saturday for some time) we found ourselves in week one of the finals at home to Uni with a double chance. Although going down on the day we showed enormous character to come back from 7 goals down in the 3rd quarter to get within 2 goals in the last and if not for some dubious umpiring decisions (not for the last time during the finals) could’ve gotten even closer. This put us into a do or die First Semi against T.A.’s and to make matters worse we were to play in wet & windy conditions (we were 0-3 in similar conditions during the year). In what would have to be one of the gutsiest quarters of footy the club has ever played, we outscored them into the wind in the last quarter to win by 17 points and advance to a preliminary final away to CBC, who had suffered a shock loss in the same conditions to Uni. Although we had won 7 games in a row against them in the previous 3 years, CBC had only lost 2 games in the season proper and had been the bench mark for the majority of the year. We found ourselves 4 goals down half way through the second quarter, but from that time on, despite a pretty even inside 50 count, we outscored them 8 goals to 1 to run out 17 point winners and advance to the grand final. It was one of the great victories for the club and showed a resolve and determination rarely seen before. To win a Grand Final you need a lot of things to go right for you on the day and in the lead up. Unfortunately, without wanting to make excuses, not much if anything went right. A 34 degree day definitely would’ve favoured the team that had a week off. On top of that we lost Coops in the first quarter to a serious knee injury which severely hampered our midfield rotations. Throw in a host of missed chances in the second quarter and a 15-3 half time free

kick count and it almost made it impossible. As it turned out we were right in the game at three quarter time only to run out of legs in the last 25 minutes, but I was extremely proud of the boy’s efforts on the day. Hopefully the obvious disappointment will only serve as a spur to help us strive for a better result next year. Like most Grand final sides, there are always difficult decisions to make regarding selection and I was also extremely proud of the way Vigs, Damo & Tyler handled the disappointment of missing the final 22, especially Damo who acted as a second runner on the day. All 3 of these guys are premiership players for the club and I hope they get another opportunity in the near future. Our best and fairest for the year was a very deserving Trippo. Not many people would be aware of the weekly routine Trippo goes through just to make sure his knee can stand up to the rigours of A grade football. He had to supplement his once a week training with swimming, gym and physio and it’s a just reward for all his efforts. Every time he comes off the ground in his rotation he’s completely spent, which is a good lesson in how hard you need to work for everyone at the club. He played a variety of roles for the year from high half forward to wing to his more customary role at half back and he excelled in all of them. Our runner up this year, in a very close count, was Chaff. A forwards nightmare with his reach, pace, aggression and competitiveness, he was rarely beaten wherever he lined up in the back 6. His ability to turn defence into attack with his reading of the play and perfectly timed intercepts was a feature of his game. He also enjoyed a couple of cameos as a defensive forward where he still managed to hit the scoreboard. Third place, for the second year in a row, went to Tails. He was a model of consistency for most of the year, shutting down the opposition’s most dangerous midfielder and getting plenty of the ball himself. He also had a knack of pushing forward and kicking very timely goals. Whilst he probably didn’t have the Grand Final he was hoping for, he certainly has a few credits in the bank and I sure he’ll be back with a point to prove next year. Fourth place went to Sammy Fielding, who put the disappointment of missing last years’ Grand Final through injury behind him to have an outstanding season in our midfield. Sammy was one of our Vice Captains this year and with Gravy frequently away with work commitments, he had the opportunity to lead the side on a couple of occasions. He’s become an important part of the furniture in a very short time, which speaks volume about his character. This year we had a tie for fifth with Bobby and Casey sharing the spoils. Bobby was fantastic down back for the majority of the year and always seemed to bob up with a match saving mark at the right time in the close games. One could never question his courage or will to win and he showed enormous commitment to the cause to even get on the ground in the Grand Final with a foot injury that required a couple of injections. Casey had another very consistent year. He was one of only two players to play every game, which says a lot about his durability, and was also the other Vice Captain alongside Sammy. His run and line breaking left foot are hall marks of his game, but he pushed forward a bit more than he has in past years and hit the scoreboard regularly. In starting my thank-yous for the year, I think it’s best to start at the top, with the three men responsible, more than anyone, for the turnaround in our fortunes over the last three years. As a coach I couldn’t hope for more support. Nothing’s been too difficult and

any request within reason has been met with approval. H, Rocket & Dimo have seemingly endless passion for the success of the club and it’s good to see their years of toil are now being rewarded. Thanks also to Gerry for his unending support as Footy Manager. He has a great ability to step back and look at the big picture when assessing certain issues that arise during a typical season and our current success is in no small part due to his input over the last five years. We’ve been fortunate to gain the services of Jamo this year as an assistant coach and the different voice and new drills he’s brought to the table have been invaluable. Hopefully we can keep him involved next year as I know he wants to coach again in his own right at some stage. Along with Gnomey, doing the rotations and Grant helping with match ups once his reserves duties have finished, you’d be hard pressed to find a better coaching staff in the comp. With Boo moving on to greener pastures at Perth (apart from some very welcome cameos during the year) we were at a loss as to who would take over the responsibility of stats guru. Fortunately up stepped Jordy, who along with his fiancé Megan took on the role and did it with aplomb. Nothing was too hard for Jordy, who also helped Grant out as a boardman/assistant coach/manager, and he was an easy choice this year for the Coach’s Cup. A big thanks also to a couple of club legends as well as great mates of mine in Percy & Spud who along with Peter Hayter rounded out the stats team. Spud (aka Cam from Modern Family) and Percy always made it interesting in the truck, whether it be their married couple arguments, Spud’s dogs snoring or their attempts at commentary. DB continued in his role as team manager and his efforts were once again appreciated by all and sundry. Nothing’s too hard for DB and it certainly makes my job a lot easier on a Saturday knowing that DB’s got everything under control. His help in the kitchen on a Thursday night also doesn’t go unnoticed. We were also fortunate to have Marshy continue in his as the official runner. It’s a thankless task (especially when you’re playing in a monsoon in the Valley), but a very much appreciated one. Last year I was a bit premature in farewelling the dynamic duo of Ann & Heidi as our physios, but I’ve been assured that this is the case this year. I thank both of them for their efforts over the last 3 years and hope that we will continue to see them socially. It will be difficult to find replacements with the same unique mix of friendly professionalism and we wish both of them all the success they deserve with their careers. Well done to all the other coaches on their respective years, especially to Drewy & Hobbsy on both reaching Preliminary Finals. Our next step as a club is to ensure we have a majority of our teams make finals and that will only happen when we see more numbers at training. One of the few disappointments of the year from a senior coach’s perspective was the lack of numbers on the track in our senior group from about round 6 onwards. The numbers from the reserves really dropped off and to be a bona fide big club we need our reserves playing deep into finals. I’d also like to congratulate Metters on becoming the first player at the club to play 300 games. It’d be difficult to find a more passionate Wesley Curtin person and over the years he’s filled a number of off field roles as well. His speech, after a close fought 5ths loss, was one that hopefully all the young players took on board as it typified the selflessness of the man. I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank my wife, Michelle, for her continued support and understanding during the year.

In closing I’d like to remind everyone we’ve achieved a hell of a lot over the last 3 years, but now isn’t the time to get complacent. We will enjoy our time off, but hit the ground running next year to ensure we continue to grow and improve individually and as a club. Our aim should be to be the best club in the WAAFL and we’re probably only half way there. Cheers Earl

A RESERVES Some of the highlights of the year for the Ressies include: • Bennett Tunbridge’s 200th game; • Big away wins against University and North Beach; • The 10 new players to the club who played ressies; • The 18 games of football we played; and • The bond within the playing group and the resolve to achieve more in 2015. Now to the Award winners. Our Fairest and Best – Klint Williams. Willow as he is more affectionately known played 10 games for us this year and four games with the One’s. With Willow you know that you are always going have a solid contributor for the whole game. His sheer determination to get to the contest and then fight for the ball is second to none. Just when you think he has nothing left to give, he digs in and shuffles along to the next contest. Klint also likes to rest forward and he proved himself to be a goal sneak by bagging several goals throughout the year. Congratulations Klint. Runner up Fairest and Best – Sam Lambert. Captain again this year Sam will always lead from the front. Through necessity we played Sam in a variety of roles this year including some time down back when we needed his on-field leadership and his skills to settle the team. Whilst he may not admit it this time in the backline served him well and ignited his desire to run through the midfield again. Unfortunately Sam had a couple of injuries this year and his studies prevented him from making as many training sessions as he had in past seasons. Nonetheless Sam gave his all and this is reflected in the respect he has from not only me but all his team mates. Well done Sam. Third Fairest and Best – Aiden Ietto – Aiden played in 16 games with us this year and 1 in the league team. To say that Aiden was important to us this year is a huge understatement. Aiden started out in the backline where he was resolute in his defensive play. He was also called to play a significant role as a ruckman and his ability to have a clean jump and palm the ball to our midfielders was fantastic to watch. Aiden has a contract with Swan Districts again next year and whilst I wish him every bit of luck, for selfish reasons I hope that he continues his development with us next year. Well deserved Aiden. Team Mate of the Year – as awarded by his peers goes to Dylan Wray. Dylan has a real knack of being able to bond with all of the players and this is obviously reciprocated. Unfortunately Dylan had a few injuries this year and for the majority of time could only run in straight lines – which is fine in the backline. Much like last year Dylan did his hammy again and he is encouraged to look after his body over summer so he can go into next year fully fit. Dylan’s pre game speeches continue to amaze me with the level of passion that he has for the team and his desire for the team to share the rewards. Congratulations Dylan. Development Award goes to Connor McCutcheon. Connor was given his chance to play at the behest of Jon Edmo. Anyway Connor came into the ressies when we needed

some pace around the ground and a forward who could kick goals. It is fair to say that it took Connor a few weeks to get a handle on the pace of the game but when he did he looked really comfortable. Connor used his pace out on the wing or at half forward to the team’s advantage and demonstrated many times that he has the capacity to take a good overhead mark. Connor was also prone to push forward and kick the odd goal as well. Keen to learn and adhere to the game plan Connor delivered on all aspects over his 11 games. Will be much the better for it in 2015. Great stuff Connor. It was particularly pleasing to see that several of the new players to the Club this year really settled in well with the other guys in the team. In particular Cam was only one of three to play 16 or more games this year. Slippery as he became known as was more than capable of delivering dashing runs through the backline or from the wings and these were great to watch. Razor Ray joined us from High Wycombe and was an instant hit. Unfortunately his hardness at the ball was not matched by the strength in his shoulder which at the end of the year you only had to look at and it popped out. Contributed as runner when injured which was a great help. Sporny was another good acquisition and his good form was rewarded with two one’s games including one up in the wet at Swan Ath. Moved very smoothly around the forward line and was one of the more accurate kicks for goal. Kyle – was great to see him play after recovering from a knee reconstruction. Was a bit wobbly at the start but as the season went on and he became more confident he proved to be very handy and showed plenty of football smarts. Big Alex (Alby Mangles to his mates) was a surprise packet. The big ruckman played 8 games and was able to take the ruck and then move around the ground as a fleet footed mid fielder. I was really pleased the way the boys got around him when Alex lost two relatives on flight MH17. It was a reflection of his impact on the team. For the core established guys it was pleasing to have Ollie and Martin both play 100 games for the Club. Sauce also cracked the 100 game milestone although not all were played with us. It was also pleasing to see that over the course of the season we were able to determine that Ash can be very damaging off the half back line (hamstrings willing) and that Hilly and Cale can also play in defence. Cale has the nouse to be able to watch the dangerous small forwards next year. It was also pleasing to have Mark Hanning in the team all year after winning the 2013 F&B award for the three’s. Great progression. This year also saw the rise of Jordan as the pre-eminent Manager of the Year and his ability to have everything organised on game day was of huge assistance. To all the coaches – thanks for sharing your knowledge and expertise (and your players). I continue to be amazed at the level of commitment displayed by Earl and the wealth of knowledge of the game that he is willing to share. The game day strategies he put in place with Jamo and Gnome are a stand out in the WAAFL. You can only but learn from them. To Rod, Gerry and the rest of the Committee thanks for

your continued support. It makes a Coaches life that much easier when things off the field are well managed. I have been coaching for the past 17 years or so and for all this time I have had nothing but support and encouragement from Alison – it is something that I cherish. This year was no exception. Finally, to everyone who played in the team this year, my heartfelt thanks for your effort, commitment to the Club, the Team and each other.

Firstly and most of all to the players that week in and week out played their hearts out, never complained and never gave up. Our results might not matter as much as the higher grades but as people, you guys are what make this club such an amazing place. I don’t play footy because I love footy I play footy because I love you guys. Next in line for me is thanks to Suma. This guy is an asset to the club and to me as a person. He made sure I kept a level head and didn’t let the fact that I was a player cloud my ability to coach. He helped me be a better coach and a person along the way.

Photo: Suma listening in to the opposition coach To my captain, Chummy. Thanks for organizing helpers every week mate (and taking the blame when we didn’t) and for leading the side. You’re a natural leader and the longer the season went on the more valuable you were to the side. To my manager Mr Joyce. Thanks for being an ear to listen and bounce my thoughts off and for making sure every game ran smoothly. The second half of the season fine sessions you started were a highlight for the boys on Thursday nights as well. I hope you get around this club for a long time to come because we will get around you. I have to mention the guys that helped kick off the season as well and that’s Anthony Balcombe before other commitments took him away from us, and also the vice-captain Strawsy before he went up to the ressies. all the pre-season efforts you put in to shape the side. Thanks to the other coaches. Most players probably don’t appreciate how much of an asset these guys are to the club and how much they actually sacrifice to do what they do (as a player I didn’t). Especially to Willow, Drewy, Hobbsy and Earl. Not so much to Grant whos ringtone in my phone is now the Star Wars Darth Vader theme tune. Every Friday night I dreaded getting that phone call. Thanks to Dymo, Edo, Rod, the bar ladies and everyone else that I forgot to mention. Now on to a bit of a season recap. FACT: We lost 4/5 of our first games by an average losing margin of 8 points. FACT: In those games, we lost the first quarters by an average losing margin of 22 points. It’s hard not to wonder how our season might have turned out if we had won those games and built some confidence and momentum. It’s also easy to see why we lost those games when we were the better side for the last 3 quarters of them. FACT: We had 85 players go through the side. I’m not sure if that is a record for a 3s side, but what it tells me is that this team had real guts and patience. The game plan had to change week by week as we struggled to adapt to losing such a large number of players every week and the core players still had to stand up and make the most of it. The best thing about this side is even when we lost we stuck together and we had fun. Even til the end of year celebrations everyone still got around the team and had a laugh. A few kind words for the award winners. Arma, second to none mate you lead by your actions and you do it well. Gucks, you are a warrior. If you were born a hundred years ago you’d be a gladiator. A hipster gladiator. The next bloke is a leader who probably doesn’t often pick himself to lead, even when everyone else does. That’s Caden for ya. Travy, you do all the little things well. Another quiet leader type. If I had a team of 22 Travys id win every week. And to Dave. It’s called most courageous for a reason. A guy that just keeps going and going and going. You don’t think before you chase the ball and I think that’s for the best because otherwise you might take better care of yourself. Regardless, it’s a quality I admire and you deserve this award. Thanks for the year to everyone involved. Im already thinking about next year and I look forward to seeing some of the players this year go much further than the 3s side with their football ability.

DANIEL DREW

D1 RESERVES Season 2014 saw a first half of inconsistent results, but in the last half of the season, the 4’s won 7 games in a row to storm into the finals in what would be a tight battle for the top spots come the end of the season. We recorded our biggest win of the season in round 2, a 152 point thumping against TA’s. Unfortunately the first half of the season was plagued with inconsistency and we never saw back to back wins until rounds 7 and 8 against lowly Whitfords and Kalamunda. It was clear early in the season that the sides to beat would be North Beach, North Freo, Uni and Freo CBC. A disappointing loss to Freo CBC in round 9 after being in a winning position would be a loss that would come back to haunt the boys come the pointy end of the year. We followed the loss to CBC with a tough loss in terrible conditions out at UWA sports park against UNI. This loss sparked the side into life and created what was an eventual 7 game winning streak to see the 4s finish in 4th spot at the end of the season, equal 1st! Some highlights during the normal season included beating Mount Lawley in both games, a big 35 point win in trying conditions against eventual premiers in North Freo in round 15 at home. These two efforts and the 7 wins in a row to finish the season would give the side much need confidence going into the finals. Our first mission was an Elimination Finals against Mount Lawley. Previous results meant nothing as it was finals time and Mount Lawley’s finals experience was a great test for the boys. The match was tight throughout with the boys putting on a great running display in the last quarter to win the match by 15 points. To beat Mount Lawley in all 3 games this year was a massive achievement. The next assignment was a Semi Final against a North Beach side that was on the slide after a great start to the season. The boys got off to a flyer which bought the margin to around 7 goals at quarter time. Even though North Beach would come hard at us in the last quarter, the damage had already been done, running out eventual 5 goal winners. The next step in the finals would see a Preliminary Final against a side we weren’t able to beat during the normal season, Uni. Both previous results had seen Uni beat us convincingly, but this was a different side to take to the field for the Preliminary Final.

Early in the first quarter it was clear that we were in for a tight contest. Uni dominated the first half of the quarter, only for us to win the 2nd half, but unfortunately not putting the results on the score board. The third quarter saw Uni use the breeze to their advantage and skip to a 5 goal lead heading into the last quarter. We had often kicked goals in bursts during the last half of the season so we headed into the last quarter with the belief we could get the job done. Even with a spirited effort in the last quarter we would end up going down by 11 points, a disappointing end to the season. The boys did a great job during the last half of the season to win 9 games in a row. It was great to see many new faces play in the 4’s during the season and make an impact straight away, and as usual there were many players who would show improvement in their game as the season went on. As usual there are many people to thank after a big season; firstly I’d like to thank Dymo for his continued support as my assistant coach/team manager. Secondly I’d like to thank the Captain, Dunny, for another stellar year leading and inspiring the boys during the season. A thank you must go out to Simone and all the trainers at the club, your work to get the guys prepared for the matches/training never goes unnoticed. I’d also like to thank Gerry and Rocket for their continued support during the season. Last but not least, I’d like to say a big thank you to my fiancée Kelsey for her help and encouragement during the season. Looking forward to seeing what season 2015 brings!

E2 GRADE Early on in the pre-season, I approached Johnny Edmondson about the possibility of swapping coaching duties this year, as both he and I had been coaching the 3s and 5s for the past two seasons. After talking about it more, we were both happy to do so and had the backing of the management at the club. I knew taking on the role of 5’s coach would have its challenges. That is why I would not have dreamed of taking on the responsibility without the help of one of my best mates, Ryan Melvin. I am extremely grateful for what he has brought to the 5’s side this year. Melvin was great for seeing things that needed changing during a game, like match ups or opposition players that would need tagging. But what I loved most was what he showed one a lot of the other players on the field. He is as hard as nails, never avoids a contest and always seems to leave carnage in his wake. He was an outstanding leader and I know or certain that every player in the 5s learnt something and benefitted from him being around. Now for a quick recap of the season, I would like to think this year was a success for the 5s. Obviously not in terms of making finals but more so in terms of maintaining solid numbers and never having to forfeit a game. This is a massive achievement and although in many games we were comprehensively beaten on the score board, we showed great spirit and fight throughout the season. A lot of guys were playing their first year of football, who became the cult figures of the 5s. Having guys such as, Santosh, Jacko and David come down to the club not knowing anyone and never having touched a football was very rewarding to see their progression throughout the year.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank a few guys individually. Firstly, Rhys Watkins (Watto) very rarely missed a training session and lives and breathes for the 5s. He was always quick to help when needed. Secondly, Jesse McLure, who had a really solid season on the field and his help with taking gear to games and giving others lifts was extremely helpful. Thirdly, Anthony Joyce (Scorpio) while he didn’t physically play a game for the 5s towards the end of the year he willingly helped out with coaching when required. He is a terrific clubman. There are many people to thank in terms of continually putting a team onto the park. There are too many to mention but you all know who you are, and I thank you sincerely. Finally, the main man of the 5s this year, Timothy Shakespeare (Shakes). What an outstanding season! His quality of football this season was a pleasure to watch and beyond that your leadership was amazing. There were many inspirational moments to your year and I am extremely grateful for the help in gathering gear for games and taking the coaching when I was unable to. To all the other coaches, it was again a pleasure to work with you all. Earl, congratulations on another brilliant year. I know losing the grand final would hurt to no end, but having a top side that is achieving so highly is a benchmark for the rest of us. Special thanks to Dymo, who is always the first to help anyone in anyway, especially me. Also thanks to Gerry and Rocket for your ongoing support this year. Willo

PHIL SCOTT COLTS The Wesley-Curtain Phil Scott colts group of 2014 had a challenging year. On results alone (4 wins, 14 losses – 8th on the final ladder) it will unfortunately be deemed unsuccessful. But if other factors were to be considered – participation, commitment to the club, leadership and maturity of what is essentially a group of young men – it could very well be viewed as a success. When the club is one of only a handful of clubs in the WAAFL with the ability to field 2 teams, participation is what is essential to make a colts program like ours work well. In 2014 WC had 88 players register with the club – a sign of just how popular the club has become in recent times. Of that number, 50 went on to play at least one fixture of Phil Scott Colts, and 28 played at least one game in both grades. The competition itself was one that was highly skilled and it was emphasized early on to our players that they had to be on the ball and focused at all times. 2 heavy defeats in the opening 2 rounds against the elite of the competition (Trinity-Aquinas & University) was an eye opening experience to the players and coaches of just what the team would be facing for the remainder of the season. Leading into round 4 the team was on a 1 – 2 record, courtesy of a large win over West Coast in Round 3, with a chance to set up the season. It unfortunately led into a series of 7 defeats in a row, 6 of which the team had a legitimate chance to win before running out of legs in the later stages of games. It set up a run in the 2nd half of the season where the boys took their experience to earlier losses and brought out a much more competitive style of game, and this was complimented by many opposition coaches. Highlights include a come-frombehind 1 point win against Mt Lawley in round 13 and a dominant win against Whitfords in round 17 which ultimately ruined their likely chances of playing finals. With the league lifting the age from U19’s to U20’s in recent years, it certainly presents a challenge to maintain a competitive team while also ensuring the development of younger players. In 2015 there will only be 30 players graduating to senior football which does highlight a positive that nearly 2 thirds of the 2014 colts group will be back to represent the club at this level again next year. While it is sad to see some established 1st colts players moving on to higher grades next year (namely Carden Taylor, Blake Regan, John Bruce, Steve Piper, Ben Richardson, Glen Burns, Jack O’Malley, Murray Bowman & Dec Hart) there is a very strong core of younger players that will be better for the experience of playing the highest level of colts outside the WAFL colts system in the state.

Through the adversity of going through a 1 – 9 stretch in the opening 10 rounds it was incredibly rewarding to see the level of commitment shown in the back end of the season and this mainly is due to the maturity and leadership of certain players. Captains Steve Piper & John Bruce, along with fellow colts squad leaders in Carden Taylor, Jack Bechilli, Tim Walker & Ben Richardson (special mention to Riley Jupp and Jake Archer), all proved vital to making sure the boys strived to meet the high standards that were asked of them each week. This became most evident in the remaining month of the season where the team really made a point of fighting out the remaining rounds as a tight unit. Some notable mentions should be made to certain players who fought the season out valiantly. Defensively, Fraser Mead (16 games) & Blake Regan (16) were highly dependable and were continually supported by fellow teammates down there in Glen Burns (13), Jack Campbell (13) and Darren Sweeney (12). Our Midfield had some solid contributions from regular members Carden Taylor (14), Nick Trinder (14), Ash Brown (18), Ben Richardson (17), Roman Murdock (13), Sam Dennis (12), Cam Taylor (16), Ed Sawle (15) and Randall Hodgeson (11). Major Forward line members included leading goal kicker Jack Bechilli (15 games and U20 State WAAFL Representative), Sam Moir (16), Niall Hayres (15), Luke Burns (14) and Cam Sturges (15). Many thanks must also go to the fellow staff that assisted in helping me get through and manage the year. This includes Pat Henning, Chris Vigor, Scott Hobbs, Fraser Ricupero and Rafe Wood, who was incredibly unlucky to miss out on playing in his final year of colts due to injury. A mention must also be made of Heidi Williams, the colts physio, and all other physio’s who were on hand to assist looking after the many injuries the boys suffered throughout the year. In terms of club staff I would also like to acknowledge the assistance of Rod Phillips, Gerry Mabarrack, Earl Spalding, Matt Jamieson, Grant Edmunds, Martin Edmunds and finally Dean Diamond.

SCOTT HOBBS

What a simply incredible season we have had. If someone had told me we would almost make a grand final I would have said “Stevie ease up mate.” But we did.

getting first hands around most stoppages. May be greatly assisted by being the first person ever to go to Europe for a few weeks mid-season and losing weight. Now for kicking and he’s got it all.

We started the season off with a cliché Brumby colts game against Uni to get pummelled 2.1 to 11.19. Happy to say that was our lowest score for the season and things improved solidly. Winning our next 2 games including keeping Wanneroo goalless was the start of something good. Through the standard ups and downs of the season we managed to get into finals finishing 2 and a half games clear in 5th (Yes another draw this year).

Matt Barnsley wins best team man this year. Had a great season on the field as a player being immensely important throughout with his skill and smarts. Matts best efforts came in the few games mid year when we needed a ruckman with both our regulars away in which he accepted and toiled hard all day with. He helped out the most times after games this year including one where he was knocked out during our game previously, probably a bad call on my part.

Beating the team that finished second who only dropped a couple of games for the season gave us some good hope and confidence coming into finals. It was justified. A gutsy win over the up and coming North Freo gave us the clubs first ever 2nd colts win in finals. After big celebrations we went on to play and beat the 3rd placed North Beach to knock them out in straight sets and advance to the prelim. Must note of Tim Walker calling the team together at 3qu time when North Beach made a late charge to level, his leadership was incredible and up of the best individual acts of leadership I’ve witnessed. Making the prelim and losing by just 9 points was crushing so close to that wanted GF, but end of the day we made a prelim final, hell yeah.

The word whipping boy is thrown out a lot these days but Chum was most definitely that. Whether it was his kicking, decision making, rocking up late or just the head on his shoulders I’d be giving it to him and to his credit he took it and rocked up to play all but one game for the season for us.

On to the awards, there isn’t much hiding how much I love this guy as a player. Tom Regan this season controlled the back half. He was attacking with his intercept marks and playing on, but kept his opponent touchless most weeks. If he can make it to some more training sessions it would be impressive to see what he could do. Our runner up was close to our most important player this year. Having to be thrown into a role as a ruckman early on in the season he had to adapt which he did and excelled. Joe was crucial for us this season. His tap work helped in our clearances becoming one of our strengths but his work around the ground was the best, running most ruckman off their feet and being essentially an extra mid. It’s nice when you can give an award you didn’t expect to have to give, but our player of the finals award goes to Harrison Whiteside. Whitey our strong inside mid showed his strength and determination come the pointy end of the season. By all means not the only one but his last 4 games for us he bullied the opposition

To Budgy, its been one hell of a rocky season but was so good to have you with us this year. From a personal perspective it was great to learn what football is like at a higher standard and bringing some form of seriousness to the colts. Our discussions always meant a lot, whether it be which colts do you think are going to go out for a big one, or discovering attractive members of their family. Something good had started at the colts and we will see some great things in future thanks to you. To Kizza G. You were there most weeks, and printed off team sheets often… To Earl, even by my standard what you did with the boys was great this year. 3 in a row would be incredible but to make the grand final is fantastic and great signs to come, well done kid. I’d like to thank the club for giving me the chance to coach this year and the whole player group for putting up with me on Thursday and Saturday nights throughout the year. Lastly to the colts playing group, you were all a great group of blokes and so much fun to coach, well most of you at least, I hope to see you all next year for another fantastic season.

The new clubroom renovations were finished in time for the start of the season and the boys enjoyed the new surrounds. With the clubrooms still so new and shiny, the main parties for the year were again taken down to the Swan River Rowing Club at Canning Bridge. For the third year running, we took 6 of the postmatch presentations to platinum sponsor Broken Hill Hotel. Thanks to Phil and the team for their hospitality. After changing up the first party of the year again, we held the inaugural Uniform Party to celebrate the start of the 2014 season at the Swan River Rowing Club. There were some fantastic and creative uniforms worn on the night, with everyone fully embracing the theme! Special shout out to Damo for his Hulk Hogan outfit, with full points for his themed entrance music. ‘H’ and the Pink Tiger team capped off an amazing 4th year of Pink Tiger Day raising $30,000 for the day and eclipsing the $100,000 mark in total funds for the Jane McGrath Foundation. Although the League side went down to Uni in the special ‘Pink Jumpers’, it was still a fantastic day for the club, especially with the new setup of the marquee and lounge area in the forward-pocket which was a definite upgrade from the balcony that was used in previous years. It was a big night afterwards as well with all the ladies in good spirits after being on the bubbly all day in the marquee! The club’s marquee event, the annual Tigerland Cocktail Party was held at down at the Swan River

Rowing Club and was a return to the ‘glory days’, with a huge crowd in attendance. All of the gents were suited up and looking sharp and the ladies looked amazing in their cocktail dresses. The Tony Notte Memorial Reverse Raffle did notte happen in 2014, but will look to return bigger and better in 2015. The A-Grade Grand Final celebrations were definitely a more somber affair in 2014, however it definitely wasn’t any more sober! Credit to the boys who lasted the whole weekend, with special shout outs to Conor’s hairdressing, Morgan and Chaff’s new haircuts, and the numerous fantastic costumes on Mad Monday. There was a great team of Social Mad Dogs assembled this year and none of this would have been possible without them - everyone put in a huge effort. Thanks to Michael ‘Chummy’ Roberts, Rafe ‘Got’ Wood, Andrew ‘Cunners’ Cunningham, Al ‘Smithy’ Smith, Scotty ‘Hobbsy’ Hobbs, Matty ‘Mayhem’ Miller, Joely Gelding, Ashton ‘Kutch’ Brown, Steve ‘Pipes’ Piper, Carden Taylor, Kizza G, Ben ‘Richo’ Richardson, and Sammy Dennis. A special thanks to all of the Colts and Ex-Colts that stepped up this year and helped out behind the bar – it was a huge improvement from previous years and we’re looking forward to these guys being involved for many years to come! I also need to make special mention of a few more people whose support and help was invaluable throughout the year;

- Dymo, Rocket and ‘H’ as always for their help and support. - Mad Dog DJs, Tails and Cutler, for a huge effort behind the decks at the functions this year. - Bobby for delivery all of the beer every week and for the parties - Judy and Mel for working the bar at home games and also doing a superstar job at cleaning the Rowing Club and Clubrooms after functions and events. - All the others who helped out with the setups, bar work during the season and at events – there was plenty of them! - And lastly, thanks to all the players and ‘social members’ who attended all the events. We’ll be looking to get some more of the Colts boys involved a lot more in 2015, so if you’re interested in being involved, make sure you put your hand up at the start of next season! We’re all looking forward to a big 2015 on and off the field! Cheers, Jesse & the Social Mad Dogs 2014

The “best clubman” award is presented to an individual who makes a contribution to our club that is above that, which we as a club, could normally expect. It may be that their effort far exceed their designated role, or they have no official role, but make an outstanding contribution to the club, nevertheless. The club is pleased to announce Tom “Money Bags” Evans as the recipient of this years’ Best Clubman Award. As treasurer of the club Tom has extensive duties, most of which are carried out behind the scenes. He manages all aspects of the club finances from payment of invoices, management of members fees, payment of club staff, banking and cash floats, processing of all transactions through the till and cash sheets, preparation of budgets and interim accounts plus Year End accounts. Tom has now been treasurer of the club for the past five years. During this time the club has grown rapidly to the extent that it is now effectively operating like a small business that runs 12 months of the year. Tom has guided the club through this period and implemented various strategies that have resulted in a significant improvement in our financial position. This has included the introduction of procedures to control cash turnover through the till and stock controls, tracking of membership payments and staff & umpire payments. He has also overseen a restructure of the club as a commercial entity that has seen us derive a significant reduction in our GST liabilities. Unfortunately, Tom blew his knee out early in the year and needed a reconstruction. However he never missed a beat in his role as Treasurer despite his own personal disappointment in being unable to play during the year. He has a great love and commitment to the club and is a fine example to all. Tom is a more than worthy winner of the Club’s most prestigious award not only for his massive efforts this year, but over the past five years. Great work Money Bags!!

The Most Meritorious Award is awarded for the most outstanding football performance for the year.

The Most Meritorious Performance is awarded to the person who has achieved the most for the club from a purely football perspective (as opposed to Best Clubman which involves both on-field and off-field contribution). This year’s award goes to our Club Coach - Earl Spalding. Earl took the A Grade to another Grand Final this year and after achieving an A Grade and a B Grade premiership in the previous 2 seasons he has become unquestionably the most successful coach in the club’s history. In addition to his astute coaching (it is a pleasure watching him “out-coach” his opposition counterpart week in - week out) “The Duke” has also had a massive impact in enhancing the development of our players as well as building a winning culture throughout the player group. His commitment to the club has been unwavering and we are very proud to have a man of such high calibre at the helm! Congratulations Snake!! Sssssssssssssssss.

And the winner is....Jordan Edmondson. With Boo moving to greener pastures at Perth, we were at a loss as to who would take over the responsibility of stats guru. We were very fortunate early in the year when Jordy put his hand up to help in the coaches box on saturdays. Jordy, ably assisted by his fiancĂŠ Megan, did a great job in his first year in what is a very difficult job. Jordy also took on the role of manager/assistant for the 2s helping Grant to no end throughout the year, he was also given the reigns on one occasion and did a fine job coaching the 2s that weekend. Jordy is a worthy recipient of the 2014 Coaches Cup, his help (if he does move away) will be missed next year.

LIFE MEMBER INDUCTEE GRANT “METTERS “ METCALF Life Member inductee 2014 Metters has just completed his 18th season with the club - from his debut as a Colts premiership player in 1997 to playing in a Prelim final with the 4ths this year and was the first player in the clubs history to play 300 games. Grants statistics as a player boasts 2 premierships from 4 attempts, which is a fair effort in anyones book. In addition to his on field achievements, he was Treasurer of the club for 3 years and received the best clubman award in 2009. He served a Team Manager Assistant coach on 3 occasions - the 3rds in 2011 and 2012 and the 5ths in And theaswinner is....Jeff /Miller. 2014. Throughout his playing career, while not in an official capacity, he has always helped out his team and coach whenever an extra pair of hands was needed - which when you are playing down the grades is very often! This was Grant would have to be the most organised coach I know. He is also very passionate evidenced in 2013 when suffering a broken collar bone in round 1 Grant took on the role of 5s assistant/manager just about coaching and the club. This year he was very unlucky to miss the finals (losing 3 for something to do.

games by under a goal, after leading late in all of them) but never let any of his match day interfere league his willingness to help out evin He is a man of disappointments exceptional character and integritywith boththe on and off thegame field. Heorsupports with enthusiasm virtually capacity required. ery socialany event we hold, and is a very worthy inductee as a life member of the Wesley Curtin Football Club. As was the case for all teams during Uni break, his playing stocks were ever diminishing and it didn’t help that the league coach continued to take magnets and didn’t give any back. There were no arguments or outward shows of disappointment. Grant simply got on with it. He was always there on training nights, apart from a couple due to illness and he was always willing and eager to be involved as much or little as required. Once the reserves season had finished, rather than disappear, Grant actually increased his work load and he provided a very important set of extra eyes in the coaches’ box. I look forward to continuing to work with Grant in the years to come. Congratulations Grant you truly are a worthy winner of this award.

Forward Pocket - Deano

Returned to the club in 2014 both eyebrows in tact eager to begin his career in the senior group. After a slow start to the year Watson acquired a small piece of land in ireland for his 21st birthday which qualified him to take on the title of Lord Watson. Due to his newly aquired stature Nan took it apon herself to turn his lordships onfield slump around. Nan began to implement her own mr miagi karate kid style training to help the lord realise his true potential on the field. Lord Watson without knowing it was being fine tuned by the master herself. Off field Nan began intensifying her bedtime hugs, after a few short weeks we saw watson on game day walking through opposition tacklers as if they were the saloon doors of his favorite country and western bar on a Saturday night. His lordship now brought touch of class to the midfield group and finished the season strongly. Noticing his own progression Dean believes Nans involvement in the club needs to reach past him and has entered her into negotiations to fill one or multiple of the open coaching positions.

Full Forward - Damesz

Was unstoppable at the Uniform Party in his hulkamania getup, was also unstoppable at the bar during his duties as water boy in the A Grade Grand Final...

Other Forward Pocket - Little Phil Cocks

Had a great year as a small forward, did manage 9 of the best goals you are likely to see in a game, wasn’t the main reason for his selection, however got the nod when yearbook HQ realised that he outscored Visser for goals this year... 9 in the 4s is better than 8 in the 5s apparently.

Half Forward Flank - Martin

was strong around the contests and ran a heavy tag on the German at the uniform party but was unable to isolate his target one out, went for a quick rest on the leather sofa at bones place and quickly had dicks drawn on his face, did miss a flash from Hayley also, not sure why he gets picked...

Centre Half Forward - (H)Ash Brown

Good sized colt that has Hobbsy salavating at the mention of his name, was asked to train with the 1s early in the season. Managed to drop his keys into someone elses bag, when quizzed - “what car do you drive?”, umm not sure, is it a holden, toyota, ford?... yeah sure its a holden... and what colour is it, umm, white I think.... yeah well done Ash, your silver toyota camry is ready to be collected

Other Half Forward Flank - Bechelli

Open house party at Chillis place after the Wind up, seems to be a standard these days, gains selection for the use of his establishment, was almost cut when we heard him say hands off his sister, thats never stopped anyone in the past... Just ask Gravy or Tayls...

Wing - Dymo

Snags a spot in the side for bringing a contingent of German Au Pairs to the Uniform Party. Was seen escorting them to the after party at Bones place, where by some of the boys tried their luck, to no avail, ended up escorting them home at 3am spewing their guts up all over the place, damn lightweight euro trash.

Centre - Gravy

Player aution price = $1400, number of games he missed this year due to West Coast Eagles = 5, number of best player awards won this year = 2, total cash collected for Gravy this year = $700, look on Hobbsys face when he reads the yearbook and realises that he lost 1 on count back...Priceless...

Wing - Trippo

wrested the league Fairest and best from Gravy this year and also managed to snare the Annual Channing Tatum award as voted by the WAGs and Sensible Sue.

HBF - Darcy Was drafted by the Fremantle Football club in 1995 as a zone selection, wait a minute thats Greg Harding, wait a minute thats Darcy Reader??? I’m confused, so were all the punters playing Jenga but that didn’t stop the flying head butt. Stobes was a bit confused also when he thought he had a 50% share in $200 dollars for a drawn swim leg at the Duckstein...also makes the cut as sexpest of the year, unlucky DB, all those sober nights cost you a spot. Centre Half Back - Metters 300

Only player ever in the clubs history to play 300 games, fine effort that, managed to knotch up the milestone under lights at the club, what a night had by all, can’t believe the fairy tale was almost pulled off when in the dying seconds we were in front, but it wasn’t to be, the bad guys went down the other end and kicked a goal with about 10 seconds left on the clock... fair to say Metters addressed the club well in the evening, Earl you could take some pointers on how to not break down and cry...

Other Half Back Flank - Tim Walker

Probably the best walker playing at the club at the moment, is injected into the side mainly because Gull said Phoenix insurance would stop sponsoring the game if 1 walker wasn’t playing. Fair call, also came knocking on the door of yearbook HQ on mad monday to plead is case, scared the living sh!t out of everyone here, that 10-15 years bananas in pyjamas costume isn’t what you think it is...

Back Pocket - The Black Prince

New to the club this year and was an automatic inclusion in the All stars, when quizzed by Willo - so mate whats your nick name, Neil responded, the black prince... not sure if the nickname is true or not but over here at yearbook HQ thats almost good enough, may have some issues lining up in the match though as his acl is now held together by hamstring meat...

Full Back - Chum

Not to be confused with the club stalwart Chummy, and you can’t confuse them anyway, firstly their names may be spelled similarly but Chum is prononuced differenty, the H is silent, he also gains selection from the salad bar, that top knot better not take off are we will all look like that.

Back Pocket - Physio Anne

Physio of the year award, and did get more best on ground awards during the season than Sammy G, was also spotted helping with dinner on Thursday nights and then eating happily at the presidents table, its no rumour that Rocket decided to finish as president because Anne was finishing up as physio this year... automatic selection from all at yearbook HQ.

Ruck - S. Willow

Had a break out performance in the 4s this season, was given 3 umpire votes for the 4s and Gav thought he played that well that he gave him 3 votes in the 3s game as well. Did manage to pop 3 footys in the process of clunking 72 contested marks. His opponent was heard to say, who is this guy. We have stuck him in the ruck because he can’t jump and this is an old school team.

Ruck Rov - Stobes

Was an automatic selection in the team after his round 18 BOG in the 1s, then proceeded to drink a heap of the Wiseman (really...) and then emptied the contents of his stomach all over the freeway, back of the car, himself, carpark, himself...also managed to hit the turf face down on his way to another spew, Hendo would be proud...

Rover - J-Mo

The old man moved fairly well out there this season, was severly limited when he had his spine fused part way through the year, made all those ground balls that much harder, not sure when he stopped caring though...look to see him wearing a track suit on saturday nights at the pub. Was also doing free testicular cancer checks this year, got up close and personal with Chaff - results are in and he’s all clear.

Coach - S Hobbs

Never got ahead of himself this year, was level headed throughout the entire season, and didn’t let any games get away from him, you would be forgiven if you thought he had coached the 2014 AFL Premiership with the way he carries on. Will be interesting to see him knotch up a win with this stacked side. Also gets picked for fashioning (H)Ash Brown into some kind of Turducken - he said the bloke is a human garbage disposal...you just fattening him up?

Strength and conditioning - Stevo Reid

Spent most of his time testing the strenght of guys around the club with arm wrestle and push up challenges, did manage to lose a fair few early in the year, but turned it around later in the year, still lost his pushup contest with the physios, but who could blame him. Look to see him fixing a fire hydrant near you.

Interchange Under the Universities new anti-descrimination, multicultural policy the interchange bench has been entirely made up with internationals that played for us this year. Jackson Joseph Santosh Bista Jeffrey Santoso and club stalwart Yaser Abou Elenein - who managed to play his 50th game this year in only his 10th season. Unlucy to miss selection

Quainny - must be the curse of TCQ or something to do with the sins of the father - but after TCQs efforts after the A grade GF, TCQjnr will be lucky to get an invite back to the club next year... and we can’t afford to pick blokes that break down everytime they go near the ball. Hank Scorpio - when we notified Scorpio that he had pretty much made the team all he needed to do was fill in the registration for, we were met with a series of excuses as to why he wouldn’t be able to make it, work meeting, working late, working on his hair, working on excuses, working hard for the money so hard for the money. Jonny Edmo - unfortunately he has a work trip organised for our fictional game so was unavailable.
