Rod “Rocket” Phillips
What a history breaking year for our Club. We won our first ever A Grade Premiership which we have been striving to achieve for nearly 50 years. We also created WAAFL history in being the only club to win B Grade and A Grade premierships in consecutive years. Sure the game is played by 22 players on the day; however these huge achievements would not be possible if it weren’t for the determination of all of the players, sponsors, supporters and the club as a whole. I can’t possibly put into words to the players how much joy it has brought to many people who have put so many years of hard work, support and sponsorship into this great football club. At the risk of repeating myself, the leadership qualities of our Club Coach, Earl Spalding and our Club Captain, Steve (Gravy) Gravina, has gone a long way in shaping the success of this football club. Firstly to the A Grade. What more can you say? The achievements by this side over the last few years have been truly remarkable. To band together after being demoted to B Grade and to win successive premierships is a true reflection of your courage and your character. Top stuff boys! To Grant and the A Ressies; although on-field it probably wasn’t as a successful year as you had hoped, it is without a doubt that you’re support to the A Grade went a long way in achieving the club’s success. I am sure with the same hard work that this side can achieve finals. To Todd Pender who in his first year at our football club, took on the task of coaching the A Colts. This year the Club took on a policy of promoting Colts into Senior Ranks, to prepare them for the rigors of A Grade football. There is no doubt that in future years, this will come to benefit our football club greatly. Todd and the A Colts’ support in this process was a mark of a team putting their own success behind the success of the club. The club would like to thank Todd and the A Colts’ for their unselfishness and unwavering support of our club. Willo and the 3’s were unlucky not to make finals this year. Willo once again proved what a quality person he is in leading this team. He leads by example and anybody would be willing to follow him. I am sure Willo, that in future years, success for you and your 3’s is inevitable. Daniel Drew showed again this year what a true coach he has become. With Daniel and the determination of the 4’s, they were able to make the preliminary final. This was a super effort. Without question, success is going to follow Daniel and the 4’s because of their commitment to each other as a team. Johnny Edmo stepped up to the plate to coach the 5’s after the season had already started. He was therefore behind the eight ball before he had even begun. The way in which he kept his positive attitude and enthusiasm for his players, made sure that this club put a 5’s team on the park every week. With an earlier start next year, I am sure that you and your team will have a great year. Last but definitely not least, to Scottie Hobbs and the 2nd Colts. I had the absolute privilege of watching the 2nd Colts every second week develop into a formidable side. To watch you band together and work hard as a team was something to behold and is beyond your years. You should be really proud of your achievements and I am sure that with the same determination, you can go even further into the finals next year. To Scottie Hobbs, in the way you have built this team shows what a committed and passionate person you are about this football club. Great effort mate. To the wives and partners of everyone, once again the club gives you a big thank you for your unwavering support, patience and understating during the season. To our Physio’s Ladies - Kahlia, Anne, Heidi, Hanna and Maddie; the professional manner in which you conduct your expertise and your commitment is the envy of all of the other clubs. Well done ladies. To the Committee; Tommy Evans once again took on the role, which is one of the hardest in the club, in being the Treasurer. To do the books on such a large organization takes a mountain of work. The club wants to express our great appreciation of the time you give to make sure the finances of this club run smoothly. Mark “H” Hayter, our clubs strength off-field has never ever been in question. One of the main reasons for this is because of the massive amount of effort put in by this great man. Martin Edmunds, who once again did the job of the Registrar, Martin’s efforts this year were again superb and his help not only as registrar but in other duties at the club show what a committed member he is of this football club. To Dean “Dymo” Diamond, his ongoing work for this football club and his support to me as President are unquestioned. He is one of the
reasons why this club at the moment is achieving success. To our Football Manager, Gerry Mabarrack. All of the Coaches are indebted to Gerry for his support and advice throughout the year. He has taken the job front on and made it his own and this club is much richer for having Gerry take on this position. To the Social Committee; Jesse, Rafe, Cunners, S Hobbs, Horse, Maisey, Chummy, Al Smith, Nick Belfrage and Jako. We would like to thank you for your organizational skills to provide fantastic social nights and events and also your effort in looking after the bar and locking up. Congratulations to Jesse Wilson on “Best Clubman”, an award richly deserved. To David Burton and Michael Meares who add great help and great entertainment on Thursday nights in the kitchen. This will no doubt lead to us winning the World’s Greatest Community Club Football Club Chef Award. Also a big thank you to Judy and Mel, who work tirelessly in the canteen and keep our clubroom and canteen highly respectable. To Peter and Margie for assisting with the truck each week, and also for your help on Thursday nights when I have been stuck for kitchen helpers, thanks. The Pink Tiger Day this year broke all records in raising $31,000.00 for the McGrath Foundation. This amount alone was the single biggest amount raised for the McGrath Foundation by any Community Club anywhere in Australia. This is no doubt one of the greatest achievements of this football club and the club would especially like to thank Sue Rickleman, Josie Caputo, Anne Pride and Mark Hayter. In three years the club has been able to raise $69,000.00. This football club would not survive without its sponsors. The club would especially like to thanks its major sponsor, Phoenix Insurance Brokers, for their ongoing support. A big thank you to Glenn and his team. Also to our Platinum Sponsor, Phil Zoiti at the Broken Hill Hotel, we wish to thank you for your financial support and providing your venue for presentations. To the Wesley Curtin Football Club who once again have bestowed on me the honour of being their President. To be the President of not only a great football club but also an unbelievable group of people, who not only provide me with support but also friendship, is truly humbling. Finally, as I say each year, this is your Club and will be as strong as you make it. Keep raising the bar and more success will belong to this great football club. EARL SPALDING
A GRADE
If one week is a long time in footy, how long is two years? From the despair and disappointment of being relegated two years ago at Bill Grayden Reserve, to the elation and euphoria of finally reaching, after 46 years, the zenith of Amateur football, an A grade premiership.
a key to success is to have a stable list to choose from. Another interesting stat was that 15 of the 22 from Grand final day have played colts for the club. This just confirms my suspicions from a few years back that our best recruiting zone is from within.
While we spoke about maybe having to take a step backwards to go forwards, I don’t think anyone of sound mind could’ve realistically thought we could turn it around as quickly as we did.
Our best and fairest for the 5th time in a row and 6th overall was Gravy. I’ve just about run out of adjectives and superlatives to describe all of his attributes. One I haven’t been able to use before and I’m sure it’ll be his favourite is “A Grade Premiership Captain”. He rarely plays a bad game and always makes the most of his “moments”. He continually bobs up, as he did early in the first quarter of the Grand Final, and kicks momentum changing, or game defining goals. He hates getting beaten, whether it’s at a stoppage, doing a man on man drill or skolling on mad Monday, his competitive juices are always flowing. He sets such a high standard in all facets of the game, that the only top ten list he missed out on including ruck knocks, was marks. Must’ve been a statistical error from Boo.
Just like last year, the seeds of success were sewn with a solid pre-season which led us into very good practice match form (two wins against the recently relegated North Fremantle and the current premiers in University) and then winning the first 6 matches of the season proper. I think the biggest change at the club since I started 4 years ago has been our attitude and approach to getting a good fitness base through hard work in pre-season. The season held many highlights, starting with, as mentioned above, winning the first 6 games of the season. This included thumping wins against Maddington (121 points) and Swan Athletic (69 points) and home victories against University and North Beach. My personal highlight (apart from the obvious) was beating North Beach at their home ground for the first time in longer than anyone could remember. What made this victory even more meritorious was the fact we had a number of our better players unavailable and still won by over nine goals. It was also a big day for their club, being the last home game before they demolished their old change rooms and as a consequence had a big crowd of past players in attendance. This result also gave us great confidence in our “how not who” mentality. We also remained unbeaten in ten games at home. Add that to the nine out of ten from last year and we are starting to build up a bit of a fortress at South Oval. We had a couple of hiccups along the way, notably against Whitfords in round 7 and Mt Lawley in round 10. Both these losses were by under 8 points and adding the 2 point defeat to TA’s in, the only big loss was the round 18 thumping by Uni at their home ground. Whilst this result was extremely disappointing we had arranged to video the game, as we thought we would have to play Uni 3 times in a month and it proved to be the best $250.00 Rocket has ever spent. It enabled us to focus on what areas we needed to improve in and also gave us a better indication of their strengths and vulnerabilities. After comfortably accounting for North Beach in the Qualifying Final the following week (mainly due to a far superior attack on the ball) we got a chance to see how much we’d learnt from the video. In a tight and tough encounter we found ourselves 1 point in front when the final siren sounded. We had managed to hang on, despite several lead changes, against the breeze in the last quarter and the last 2 minutes of the game seemed to go forever. We were now in an A Grade grand final, the first for the club for 26 years. We also gained a lot of confidence from the way we played and put a pretty large dent in their self belief. We also earned a week off, which considering the conditions for Preliminary Final week would prove invaluable. History will show we got off to a pretty good start against the breeze in the first quarter of the Grand Final, held them for the next two quarters and ran over the top of them in the last. As you would like in any game, let alone a grand final, it was difficult to pick best players due to the even contribution from everyone. The hardest part for a coach in Grand Final week is always centred around selection. We had a number of difficult decisions to make on form and fitness and an indication of how tight this group has become is that everyone that missed out wanted to contribute in some manner on the day. Whilst I don’t like singling individuals out too often, it would be remiss of me not mention the efforts of Lloydie on grand final day. Despite the obvious disappointment of being overlooked in selection, he agreed to be one of the runners for the day. I thought if he was mentally strong enough to do it, his voice, enthusiasm and understanding of our game plan would be like having 19 men out on the ground. His ability to carry out this task the way he did showed what sort of strength of character he possesses and I can only hope for his sake and our other injured players in Sammy F, Chippa and Cordell, that we can be as successful again in the near future. An interesting stat from the year was that we only played 43 players in the league side. Two years ago, when we were relegated we played 60. There is no secret that
Our runner up this year was a new player to the club, Trippo. His rebounding run off half back, complimented the rest of the back six perfectly and while at times he became a little bit too offensive, by the end of the year he had gotten his balance of attack and defence just about spot on. Not only was Trippo a great addition on the field, but he’s also a quality person off it and fitted in fantastically well with the rest of the player group. Third place this year went to Tails. He also had a very consistent year in his role as a “run with and off”. I can only remember him lowering his colours on one or two occasions and generally he had more of the ball and outscored his, more often than not, highly credentialed opponents. He was assigned a very difficult task on Grand final day and it was fitting that he was adjudged BOG as both his opponents had next to no influence on the game. He was also unofficially judged to have taken mark of the day, but didn’t quite pip Josh for mark of the year. He was so in the zone that he apparently took his tagging and blocking skills to another level at The Claremont on the Sunday, making it very difficult for the Uni lads there to get to the bar. In fourth place was Cogs. Luckily for him the umpires weren’t voting as they seemed to derive great pleasure from paying free kicks against him. Despite this and a regular dose of over exuberance from the opposition, he showed great strength of mind and discipline to continue to make the ball his sole objective and his hardness at the contest was a great example for his team mates. His fifteen minutes in the grand final after Gravy had been shown a yellow card, was all class. It included a number of first touch clearances and the all important first goal of the last quarter. No one deserved or earned their medal more than Cogs and it shits me that narrow minded wankers from North Beach want to question his motivation for playing. His career was cruelly cut short at AFL level and it’s fantastic to see him finally getting some rewards from the game he loves. Rounding out our award winners in fifth position was Sammy F. He, along with Chippa, would have to be the hard luck stories of the year. He battled a sore knee all year and then got a big whack in the ribs against TA’s, but continued to play on only to be sidelined by a severe medial ligament injury incurred in the last quarter of the Second Semi final. His form for the year was such that he was up on pace with Gravy in the voting until the TA’s game. He regularly racked up big numbers and like Cogs and Gravy his attack on the ball and the contest is never questioned. He is also a fantastic fella off the field and despite his obvious disappointment at being cruelly denied a premiership medal, he was in the thick of it during our lengthy celebrations. Unfortunately we only give out 5 awards for the season, as there were many more players deserving of recognition and I’ll give a brief run down in no particular order. Chaff – As soon as we accidently shifted him to defence his season came to life. His deceptive reach, speed and hardness in the contest made life difficult for all opposition forwards. Josh - Had another terrific season and I don’t think he was beaten at any stage during the year. His big defensive spoils certainly set a tone for all his teammates and who can forget that mark!! Macca – Would always get the most dangerous small forward and never let us down. Chippa – As mentioned before was desperately unlucky to get injured in the last home and away game and didn’t quite have enough time to get his ankle right.
Gave us great flexibility, being able to play back and through the middle. Case – Missed out on an award (just) for the first time in his 3 years at the club, but had another very consistent year. Will be a future leader if he stays with us and doesn’t pursue a WAFL career. Jesse – Played every game for the first time in a long while and was probably our most important player. Gave our midfield first use on most occasions and saved his best for the most important game of the year. He also made the top ten list for handballs, which is heading in the right direction. Lachie & Zac – Came back to club after stints at WAFL colts and both had big impacts on our season. Zac led our goal kicking and will continue to improve, which is a scary proposition for a certain hack, North beach defender and Lachie just oozes class with everything he does. His left foot goal from the dead pocket late in the second semi was a great example of this. Pents – Has become the complete forward with a huge improvement in the defensive side of his game. He is a very smart player and his sacrificial role in the Grand Final was not only an important one, but showed just how far he has come. Brettles – Didn’t have the season he had last year, but is always dangerous with the ball (as his 25 goals demonstrates) and his chasing and tackling is under rated. Amac - Came to us in the second half of the year and was the icing on the cake. Gave us a strong focal point up forward and his second efforts were a feature of his play. Although he didn’t take a mark on Grand Final day he had 8 tackles. Horse – The only other player to play every game, started the year slowly, but his true value to the team was his ability to play a variety of roles and positions. Gave us great cover down back at times and his long left foot is great weapon. Bobby – Started the year on par with Gravy in the voting, but unfortunately a bad foot injury threatened to end his season. Was able to get himself right for the last 2 finals which was important for our defensive structure. Almost single handedly won the game for us against North beach at home in a typically courageous performance. Conor – Showed in the Grand Final, how talented and important to the team he is. Had a knack early in the year to produce his best, when we needed someone to stand up in the big games. SammyG – The future of our defence, who will continue to improve and can go forward at a pinch as well. Paulie – Missed a fair chunk of the season, but came back and reinvented himself as a defensive forward. Played very significant roles in the finals. Nesti – Missed a lot of footy with a slow start to training and an ankle injury, but was in the right place at the right time and didn’t let us down. Maxy – Also had a slow start to the year due to travel and never really recaptured his form from last year. He still managed to be a good contributor on the big day. Vigs – As he showed in the Grand Final he gives us great flexibility. He played forward, ruck and key back and has really developed a strong presence out on the ground. I can think of no more deserved people to start thanking than the three hardest working people at the club. Without them I find it hard to imagine how we could continue to be as big an organisation as we are and I know there were a lot of man tears shared between them after the final siren. It had been a lifetime ambition for them to see our proud name engraved on the shield and H, Rocket & Diamo finally got their lick of the icecream. It is unbelievably reassuring as a coach to know that these guys will do anything to make sure we have the best opportunity possible to be successful. There is no better example of this than the video I mentioned earlier, which without it, I’m not sure we would’ve got the same result. Their passion for the club never wavered after relegation two years ago, instead it only steeled their resolve and it’s no wonder they’re still celebrating. The other long term loyal servants of the club that deserved our long overdue success this year were Gnomey and Boo. I think people under estimate how valuable a contribution these guys make. I have great faith in Gnomey to run the rotations and board, as our voting slips generally reflected we are pretty like minded, but it’s a terribly taxing job. I think our rotations would’ve comfortably doubled this year and it puts a lot of stress on one guy to handle all of it, but there were no complaints, just a bit of heavy breathing every now and again when the games got close. I don’t think any other team gets the information we do during a game and this gives us a huge advantage in terms of making changes in a timely manner. Stats, along with the footy club as a whole, are Boo’s passion and I thank him and his offsiders, especially Holty, for their massive contribution this year. Numerous times in close games we were able to make good decisions based on the data supplied to us by Boo. I would also like to thank good mates of mine in Spud and Percy for helping out while Boo & Gnomey were off in South Africa. Pents and Hobbsy senior also put their hands up to help out during this time and it was
much appreciated. Thanks also to Gerry in his new role as Football Manager for all his support during the year. It’s his goal to increase the level of professionalism within the coaching group and I’m sure this will help the club continue to improve and become the power house we should be. We are now all rowing in the same direction and this is in part due to Gerry’s guidance. While it’s taken some people a lifetime to finally get rewarded with a premiership our very popular team manager can’t see what all the fuss is about. Two years for two flags. Can’t get any better than that. Once again DB continued on where he left off last year (not literally or that would’ve been in a below ground car park across Labouchere Road from the bowling club). His work ethic on a Thursday night and Saturday match day is phenomenal and he is well and truly deserving of a beer or thirty. Thanks to Marshy for being the official runner this year. With Murds hanging up the fluoro jockstrap it was great to have someone more than fill the void and generally I only had to give him each message once. He was also more than happy to travel to Maddington and the Swan valley. We also thank and bid goodbye to the dynamic duo of Ann & Heidi as our physios. We hope to still see them socially, but will miss their professionalism and attention to detail. Good luck with your careers girls. Going on what we’ve witnessed over the last two years I’m sure you’ll do very well. Well done to all the other coaches on their respective years, especially to Hobbsy on his fairy tale second half of the year to make the five and Drewy on not only making the finals again, but giving it a real shake. Willo started off on fire winning the first 5 games, but suffered during Uni break in July and ended up missing the finals. It was very pleasing however to see him play his 200th game for the club and he was as happy as anyone on Grand Final night, such is his passion for the Tigers. Todd had a Baptism of fire in his first year at the club as colts coach and was desperately unlucky not to make the finals, but proved himself to be a great addition and I look forward to see him coaching for many more years. Johnny Edmo took on the hardest job at the club and while he didn’t enjoy too much success apart from a couple of forfeits, he managed to keep the 5’s going which didn’t look possible half way through the year. Hopefully we can have more numbers to make his job easier next year. Finally I’ll finish my thank you’s with the Coaches Cup winner for the year Grant. He would have to be the most organised coach I know. He is also very passionate about coaching and the club. He was very unlucky to miss the finals (losing 3 games by under a goal, after leading late in all of them) but never let any of his match day disappointments interfere with the league game or his willingness to help out in any capacity required. As was the case for all teams during Uni break, his playing stocks were ever diminishing and it didn’t help that the league coach continued to take magnets and didn’t give any back. There were no arguments or outward shows of disappointment. Grant simply got on with it. He was always there on training nights, apart from a couple due to illness and he was always willing and eager to be involved as much or little as required. Once the reserves season had finished, rather than disappear, Grant actually increased his work load and he provided a very important set of extra eyes in the coaches’ box. I look forward to continuing to work with Grant in the years to come. We achieved a hell of a lot this year. More than we probably ever could’ve dreamt of two years ago, but success is like a drug. The more you taste it the more you want and our next big challenge is to try and stay at the pointy end of the field. It’s very difficult to reach the top, it’s even harder to stay there. We must not only try and retain as much of our current playing group as possible, but also continue to build depth through recruiting quality players and people. It was fantastic to see so many happy faces after the game and back at the bowling club. I’m more than willing to try and make it an annual event. As I said last year “South Oval’s going to be an exciting place to be, so make sure you’re on board.” Cheers Earl

A RESERVES 2013 promised so much with a really strong vibe amongst the playing group at the start of the season. This carried into the first three games which we won convincingly. However, in the end we were the equivalent of the Kangaroos in that we lost several close games by less than two goals (four in total), including one after the siren. Hopefully we can learn from those losses and ensure that we win these close games in 2014. Special congratulations to Earl and the One’s in their Premiership. A stellar achievement! Some of the highlights of the year for the Ressies include: • The 60 plus training sessions and the 20 games (it is afterall one of the reasons we are all here); • Sauce deciding to join Swan Athletic for their warm up early in the season; • Deano and his shoulder charges (sorry tackles) •Mitch Withers impersonation of Robin Hood shooting an apple on someone’s head with an arrow from 5 metres – except in his case it was a nice drop punt and my coffee; • Hilly’s quiet self reflection when missing a shot on goal; • Their chanting on Grand Final Day; • Andrew Harman’s 200th game – and his three goals that day; • Mark Penter’s 150th game – and his goal on that day in the mud and rain; • Being the only A Reserves team to keep more than one side to two goals or less during the season; and • Keeping Maddington to 0.1. Now to the Award winners. Our Fairest and Best – Sam Lambert. Slug as he is more affectionately known was appointed co-captain at the start of the season and he delivered in all aspects. Both his on field and off field leadership were first class. On field Sam more than made up for his lack of pace with his ruggedly determined desire to get in and win the hard ball. When pushed forward as part of his mid field rotations his hard work continued taking many pack marks and finishing the season with 10 goals. Sam kick started his second half of the season and he set the standard for his team mates to follow in relation to his work ethic and level of enthusiasm for the team to achieve their best. Sam also managed to get the best from the umpires who awarded him the most votes for our team in the association Fairest and Best. Congratulations Sam. Runner up Fairest and Best – James Smith – aka Sauce. James is the only member of the squad to play in each game which is a credit to his training effort and willingness to participate to the best of his ability in everything he does. At the start of the season it was my intention to play James at Centre Half Forward due to his ability to kick long range goals (12 for the season) and whilst this did not eventuate he did dominate the ruck in almost every game. To his credit he was “tagged” in the last game against TA’s when he really dominated in wet and windy conditions which were not conducive for big men. A lot of potential still to come from the 22 year old and I look forward to him continuing to develop and become the
dominant big man in the competition. Well done James. Coaches Award – Dylan Wray. Dylan really developed this year and emerged as a strong leader within the team. This was particularly so in the middle of the season during the Uni break in encouraging everyone to keep pushing themselves for the benefit of the team. Like all good defenders Dylan likes to get up the ground and kick a few goals just to show the forwards how it is done – from limited opportunities he came away with five for the season. Unfortunately Dylan pinged his hamstring and missed several weeks in the back part of the season. During this time he helped out on the bench and his thoughtful considered suggestions in relation to rotations; game day strategy etc were a great assistance to me and I can see Dylan being well suited to coaching in the future. Development Award goes to Dougal Middleton. I am really amazed as to how Dougz manages to combine his hockey (local and National) commitments, study and footy and to excel in each (well maybe not on the study given he had to come back from his overseas trip mid season to sit a sup exam). Dougz would have to be one of the fittest players going around and this held him in good condition for the season. It did take some time but it did happen – his ability to play as a running half back changing though the mid field showed that he has the capacity and skills to play both positions to a high level. When he realised that he should give off the hand ball rather than kicking he set up many damaging team plays. Always listens to messages, always constructive in his comments, always will to learn – great characteristics. Team Mate of the Year – as awarded by his peers goes to Chris Stobaus. The man who wears a shoelace around his head during the game and his caps back to front during training, Chris has the respect from all his fellow team mates. A really solid contributor in each game Chris sets high standards and his ability to take the ball and then turn onto his left or right foot and deliver the ball accurately is a pleasure to watch. His fines collecting capacity probably needs some development however I look forward to him pushing up to the ones next year. This was enhanced by his willingness to keep training with the One’s during their finals campaign and was unlucky not to be selected. A top bloke. A key component of a successful club is its ability to provide development opportunities for its players by providing them with the opportunity to play at the highest level and to their full capacity. This was a key part of the Ressies team this year. Over 20 Colts players played in the team this year which is a significant number and places the club in good hands for the coming years. Each one of the colts adjusted to the tempo and more than repaid the faith the club had in their ability to perform at this higher level. To Todd and Beau – thanks for your assistance throughout the year in releasing these young men – It is thanks to your development of these guys that they played well and with confidence. The same can be said for players that were promoted up from the Three’s and Fours during the year. Thanks to Shaun Willow and Daniel Drew, for their wise and considered opinions, on

the players being promoted from their sides. Hobbsy – only just pipped by Earl as Coach of the Year – worked your magic with the second colts – well done. There is no shortage of talented footballers at the club. Similarly there were probably close to ten regular Ressies players who were selected on form to play in the Ones during the year. For young players such as Ascot it was reward for sustained on field performance. Sammy G another one who demonstrated he could sustain performance at this level and played in the winning A Grade Premiership. Well done to all. This bond between the Ones and the Ressies has been strong all year and it became really pronounced when a number of the boys banded together to keep training during the finals series to enable the One’s to have sufficient numbers on the track to make drills and ‘walk throughs’ productive. I have no doubt that this bond contributed to the on field success of the club. Playing a physical demanding game can also have unfortunate consequences. Players do get injured and we had our fair share with the likes of Tapscott and Musca (both colts); Quainy with his decidedly dodgy back; Al Smith and leg injuries; Mazzer and his finger and Nick doing his knee late in the season. To their credit all remained around the team and helped me out on game day. I could not have survived the season without

you – thanks very much. To Earl, a special thanks for allowing me to be involved with the One’s. I have learnt a tremendous amount from you over the past two years. It was very clear to me that your knowledge of opposing teams and ability to put game day strategies in place was a key difference between the Clubs (particularly Uni). The way that you coached the team in the finals series was top class and culminated in the most significant achievement in the Club’s history – an A Grade Premiership. To Rocket, Gerry, H and the rest of the Committee thanks for your continued support. It makes a Coaches life that much easier when things off the field are well managed. Rod your meals were great all year and Gerry your thoughts, comments and feedback are always insightful. Alison – we have been doing this football thing together since 1981 in some shape or form and I thank for your unconditional support and wise counsel. Finally, to everyone who played in the team this year, my heartfelt thanks for your effort, commitment to the Club, the Team and each other. ps – thanks to Yas for thinking that my Rolling Stones Analogy was the best presentation speech he has heard.

D1 GRADE Well after a massive result for the club, with an A grade league amateurs flag to make WAAFL history. I think it is safe to say that it was a most memorable and remarkable year! I would like to firstly acknowledge the playing group in the league side, with a work ethic unlike any other year I have seen at this club. The level of professionalism and right mix of enjoyment that the whole league squad displayed this year is a shining light for the rest of the club. It is an example the rest of us need to follow if we truly seek the big reward at the end of the year! To Earl’s entourage of helpers, it’s clearly obvious our club had the best, in the way of assistance, available to their players and you all deserve a great deal of credit. To the big snake, Earl! In my eyes, none of this club’s success in the last two years would have been possible without your guidance and ability to have everyone believing in the same set of goals. You are a great leader of our club, as well as, being one of the most approachable people that I have dealt with. As for the fellow coaching staff Grant, Todd, Drewy, Edmo and Hobbsy, I believe we have all put in a great deal of time and effort this year. The rewards didn’t show, although the fours were outstanding in making the preliminary final from fifth spot! It is the continual effort and learning that will keep taking this club from strength to strength. We are quickly gaining a reputation as one of the power house clubs, so I believe the rewards that we so dearly look for as a coach and player are just around the corner! To Rocket and Dymo the blood and bones of the football club, thank you so very much for the job you guys do that often goes unnoticed. I’m sure a second straight top side flag is an incredible reward to the hours you put in! Dymo I would like to especially thank you for your help throughout the year, with team sheets and other stupid questions that I have, it is truly appreciated! Now for the run down to the D1 League(3’s) side. Looking back to last year in 2012 where we finished third and lost an elimination final by a point in overtime, which was so heartbreaking. To this year in 2013, where we were positioned in second spot on the ladder with seven games left, and not winning another game sliding us out of the top five to miss out on finals, was incredibly hard to take in. We had such an amazing start to the year, matching it with the best and staying in touch with the top of the ladder for just over half the season. Our fade out probably came a little earlier than our seven game losing streak with our second game against bottom of the ladder side Mount Lawley, who won only one game all year! We went into that game with a lot of unfamiliar faces in the 3’s team and I dare say a lack of respect for the opposition. We won that game by a point but did not deserve the carrots as I thought Mt Lawley played a lot better than us on the day. I have gone over and over in my head what reasons could cause such a turn in a season and beside the usual mass exodus mid season (which was quite telling this season), I believe the real answer is our training and the intensity that we have at our training sessions. With a massive pre-season with incredibly strong numbers in all grades, we came out round one like a raging bull and maintained that level for several weeks. Our training during this time definitely tapered off and I believe we lost an edge on the other teams we had previously enjoyed. I don’t wish to come across all doom and gloom, I am simply giving my views in a hope that next year we learn from this season. This season held some very special moments for me at a team and personal level. The chance to play alongside Tex in his 250th was a special day for me, as in my first year at the club I played alongside Tex in a colts premiership, thirteen years ago.... It feels just like yesterday I was getting a suppository for the pain of my knee before that grand final, ah the memories! I also had the most amazing day for my 200th club game, with the last game for the year against Scarborough. The only forgettable part of the day was the fact that we lost, but aside from that the day was perfect, the boys tried hard and apart from a slow start, we won the last quarter convincingly, with many family and friends offering us overwhelming support. Special thanks to Melvin and Kellie for the amazing banner, my beautiful girlfriend even purchased special ‘200 game’ cupcakes which went down a treat on the day.

Other highlights of the year I would like to touch on, were the epic 7 point thrilling win against North Beach at the start of the season, I can honestly say that wins against North Beach in my history have been near on nonexistent. Also I get great satisfaction in seeing players performing well in the 3’s getting the chance to play in the 2’s and having an impact. With players such as Dearly, Lawrence, Ringa and Benny Spargo to name a few making good impressions. I have left the best till last, it is a pretty tough assignment to try and coach on game day when you are strapping on the boots and having a run around at the same time. Many thanks must go to many people throughout the year for helping out game day. Namely the serial partner in crime Mr Perks, Kurty and even Drewy have helped when it is really needed. To my best mate Melvs, who has been a great help, with a real passion for the game and being such a competitive person, he had a healthy influence over the playing group throughout the season. To Kahlia, unfortunately you seem to slip my mind often when I’m spreading thanks, when you probably deserve it the most! Thank you for the incredible job you do with our teams, you have been the most perfect physio we could have asked for and you are irreplaceable. A couple of blokes that I have thoroughly enjoyed playing alongside the last couple of years, namely Mikey Simmons and Joshy Parkyn, I would like to extend my respect and thanks for what you have brought to the team in the last two years. I know it was a tough job to balance the life of football with the life of work and family. I hesitate to say farewell as I’m sure that there is a possibility of itchy feet come summer! Another big thank you to the vice captain Timmy Scott, always trying to do the right thing by the team and leading from the front. To my gorgeous and amazing partner Sarah, you have provided me with so much support throughout the year. The role of coach can at times seem to have no end and your patience has been amazing. To the playing group of the 3’s, we experienced the highs and the lows in a big way this season, but this will only make us stronger and more resilient going forward. There are definitely some things to change and some things to do better. It all starts with a good pre-season this summer! Shaun Williams
DANIEL DREW
D1 RESERVES Season 2013 was always going to be challenging for the players, stepping up to a higher level against some highly skillful and structured teams. But to make the Preliminary Final was a great reward for the group who really worked hard and showed the desire required to win finals matches, every player will be better for the experience of finals intensity. Our season started with a comprehensive victory over Bullcreek/Leeming, but we were brought back down to earth with an 89 point loss to eventual grand finalist’s Mount Lawley the following week, this inconsistency with results would be seen the whole way through the season. After the first 6 rounds of the season it was clear that there were 3 standout teams (Mount Lawley, Uni and Freo CBC) which we could use as a benchmark to find where we were at as a side, which did help us later come finals time. We knew from round 6 moving forward that our main battle for ladder positioning and a top 5 finals spot would be against rivals North Beach and North Freo. However in round 13 a loss to North Beach meant we were now in a battle for the 5th spot with North Freo, who we end up beating in a tight 3 point win in round 17. North Freo stormed home in the last quarter, but we were able to fight off their desperate challenge. Beating North Freo meant 5th spot was ours and a finals birth was a reality with 1 more normal fixture to go. With finals in mind, the final game of the regular season fixture was against bottom placed Scarborough. This match did see us trailing for most of the game, but a last quarter fight back ensured a 4 point win. Moving into the finals that last quarter was set as the benchmark for what was required to meet the finals intensity over the coming weeks. Our first finals assignment was against North Beach in the Elimination Final, knowing they’re a very tough and physical side, our main focus was on pressure and making the most of our opportunities. It was tight and tough early on but we were ready for the task! The guys showed relentless pressure for the full four quarters and were rewarded with a 68 point win. It was a massive effort to maintain such a high standard for the game with it being arguably the warmest match day of the season. Uni in a Semi Final would be our next challenge. Uni had beaten us in both the previous meetings earlier in the season and they were coming off a tight loss to Freo CBC in the qualifying final, we knew it was going to be another physical encounter. The same focus was taken into the game, with great results again! An amazing 6 goal to 1 opening quarter set the game up for an eventual 32 point win. Another great result for the hard work put in. Our first quarters weren’t our best throughout the season, but what a
great time of the year to completely dominate one! The Preliminary Final against Freo CBC was the next task. Like Uni, we failed to beat CBC during the season, but if we could maintain the effort we’d shown in the previous 2 finals anything was possible. The 1st quarter was a tough and tight battle, CBC then completely dominated the 2nd quarter to take what ended up being a match winning lead at half time. The guys battled gallantly in the last half but unfortunately the damage had been done in the 2nd quarter. CBC running out 9 goal winners. Unfortunately our season had come to an end, but what a season it was! It was a great effort by the playing group to qualify for the finals for the 2nd year in a row. There were a lot of great contributions during the season with many players going up and down the grades. Congratulations must go to those players throughout the season who got the opportunity to play in the 3’s and even higher in the 2’s. Hopefully these players can continue to develop with the desire to push for higher selection in 2014. As usual there are a lot of people to thank for their efforts this season. Thanks to Willo and the 3’s boys for their continued support throughout the season. Thanks Kahlia. All the players appreciate the help you’ve provided them during the season, a big thank you to Kurt who was unable to play due to injury, however he was always keen to help out with water/running. I would like to thank the Captain’s, Dunny and PC, for their contributions on/off the field for the season, Dunny had an exceptionally great season and really motivated the group to get the best out of themselves. Unfortunately PC’s season was affected by injury, but when he was playing, he always lead from the front in the midfield. I would also like to thank Dymo for his support as my Assistant Coach, his wealth of knowledge and experience has been great support for me as I’m still learning with every game and having someone show so much support and guidance has been enormous. A big thank you must also go to my beautiful Fiancé Kelsey for her continued support 3 years into my coaching journey. Last of all I would like to thank the football club for the support they’ve given the playing group and myself during the 2013 season. Drewy.

E2 GRADE “When they offered me this coaching job they said to me that when it comes to the fives… winning isn’t important. It’s about developing players and having fun they told me. Well for most games and for most of the time… they were right. But this is not one of those times! And this is not one of those games!” ‘Half time speech vs. Coolbellup. Also an excerpt from HBO’s hit TV show, Blue Mountain State’. The team came out and controlled most of the third quarter before Coolbellup ran over us at the end and started to pile on the goals. And so it was with the Five Stars. A team of champion blokes who week after week just refused give up. Grant Edmunds once asked his player group, “How do you measure success?” The obvious answer is by winning. There are actually many other ways to measure success in a football side however. Did the side improve each week? Did the players ever give up? Did the players get sucked into ‘argy bargy’ each week? Were the kicks accurate? Did the tackles stick? At the end of the day, winning might be the most obvious measure of the most successful team, but it takes a hell of a lot of little things to get the result. Unfortunately, the fives were not the most skilled footballers in the world. Some of them had never even played a game before they joined our esteemed ranks. Our kicks usually missed the targets. We were exceptional at scoring behinds. We often chose the wrong option when we disposed of the ball. But you know what we did have? Grit, determination, some amazing salads and a bloody great time playing together! History will tell you that the Five Stars won 5 games that year. We just never actually played in any of them… The fact that we put a side together week in and week out and still went to battle means that we bloody well earnt those victories, when other sides lost morale or numbers and weren’t able to do the same. That’s an absolute credit to the playing group who stuck it out through a tough year on the scoreboard. A few notable mentions here: Andy Ross: Notorious for attending training sessions late and just heading straight to the bar. Shaun Atkins, Pup and James O’Leary: Graduates from the 5’s development academy. Played in the 4s final series and made me proud. Patty Wright: Copped a promotion to the 4s, and had the unfortunate pleasure of copping a hospital handpass from me in the same game. Ended his season with a broken collarbone. Still attended most games and finals. What a clubman. Connor Mcutcheon: Not sure of the spelling of his surname. Still a top bloke regardless. Best finals player for the 4s final series. Lost votes for being better than me.
James Doyle: Natural leader. Got better and better as the year went on. The players kind of picked this guy themselves as part of the leadership group. Also, extra points for bringing his brother down when numbers were short. Lost points because his brother wasn’t registered properly. Bonus points to Edo for sorting that out! Ang and Simon: Are you guys brothers? Still not sure... A ruthless combination when used properly. Watch them playing higher grades in the future. Ben Richardson: My best mates name is Richo too. Credit for that. Also, sweet nickname: Mo-ped. Brynn Siv: Champion bloke. Great player. Did the job every week without chasing up any credit. Every team needs a guy like this. Zac Thommo: A midfielder who was quiet happy to play full back all year. Not sure he reached his potential, but can see this guy playing ressies in the future if he chooses to. Backline leader all year. Wiltshire, Malone: Enthusiasm and effort > Skill and raw talent. These blokes proved that! Penguin: This kid can PLAY. Also definitely worthwhile having a laugh and a beer with him. Points for bloodiest injury of the year (head cut open). Big Keenan: Every team needs a bloke that can chill the hearts of the opposition and make the rest of the playing group feel safe. We had this guy. Heart of gold unfortunately. All just a show. Pushover. Please don’t hurt me… As well as the other 42 players who came through the squad this year! Just want to say a massive thank you to the guys that put this side together and made it possible. Dymo for approaching me to coach and being the guy I called when I had a problem. Hobbsy jnr for helping me organise colties every single week (and for having a brother who ruck taps to me even when I’m the worst option). Gerry my main mentor mate for sitting in the box with me and showing me what things to look for. Perko for making sure even the tough days were enjoyable and finally our club president Rocket for having my back and organising our runners/goal umpires. Also for the delicious dinners during team selection. Most of all to my assistant Coaching team, Mettas and Balcs. You guys should understand how much of an asset a guy like Mettas is to a football club. He always gets amongst it and the season wouldn’t have been a success without him. Balcs… what can I say about this bloke? Had as many good times off the field as I did on the field. Was great for the team to have someone with his experience around to help out. I feel like every time I coach in the future he will be at my side.
And finally the award winners!!! The Five Stars fairest and best for 2013 IS… Jordan ‘Twisty’ Hill and Rhys ‘Watto’ Watkins – Twisty is a ruthless footballer. Could play league if he had the drive. Missed out on the award by spending half the season in Europe. Watto was the captain of the 5s. Consistent every single game. This kid is a born leader and leads by example. Runner up… Andrew ‘Cunners’ Cunningham and Ian Seaborne – Cunners… the acting vice captain. Probably deserves this just for waiting around every team selection night to drive me home and putting up with me every Friday night when I finalised the team. Ian is the Spirit of the 5s and that was his nickname all season. A kid that always gives 100%. The toughest competitor I have ever met. Regularly beat several opposition players on his own. 5s Team Man of the year (coaches award)… Mitch Broun – You can’t bake a cake without all of the necessary ingredients. This bloke was a necessary ingredient in the 5s cake! A delicious addition on and off the field. Every player who went through our squad would have picked Mitch for this award. Couldn’t be better deserved. That’s all from me. See you next year! Things to look forward to: Earl suiting up for us. PC finally getting down and playing for us. A truckload of talented colts coming through. Some more inspirational TV Show inspired speeches from me and best of all, our first (real) win! Coach Jonny Edmo. Signing off.

PHIL SCOTT COLTS Almost. After a loss one of the League Water Runners described the year in one word for the Phil Scott Colts – “Almost”. The Club and Colts would have started the year with big expectations on the back of the 2012 success as a group. As a coach to a new club, a different group of players; the Football League amendment of the maximum playing age for Colts; direction the club wanted to take and the elevation into A Grade on the back of the League success in 2012 I knew the side and Coaches were going to face a number of challenges along the journey. Receiving a phone call from Rod in January and based on recommendations I was afforded the honour to take on the reigns as A Colts Coach for 2013 from Club Stalwart Trent Cooper. The pre-season started with a number of tasks - foremost getting to know who were Colts age players, which side they were likely to fit and getting to know the players themselves. A number of people made me feel very welcome to the club and I thank them for doing so as it made the transition easier which allowed me to focus on the playing group. To allow observers to have some idea on the complexity of the issues:- at last count there were 105 Colts aged players registered to WCAFC; in the A Colts-59 players were used in the season; 20 Colts were given the opportunity at A Reserves Grade and the 4 Colts age League players- played a combined 16 Colts games for the season in line with the direction of the club to promote players; and the side lost 69 games to injury (Grant – not all of them were from Reserves games!). However none of these were meant as excuses or reasons why the side couldn’t win games. The ability to rotate players through higher grades and provide opportunities to fringe and second tier colts could benefit both Colts sides as was seen in the latter half of the year with their success. The challenge was there for the side with the promotion into A Grade and the opportunity to play against quality opposition every week that would test them, their skills and ability to make decisions under pressure. For some, this was going to demonstrate to them whether they would be up to the demands of playing A Grade senior football in the years to come. The first four rounds of season saw positive signs with hard fought wins, two against sides that would ultimately make finals however a theme through the year in the inability to chase down close games was going to prove costly. Narrow losses to CBC, TA and Uni and the loss of key players at pivotal times through the year to injury, unavailability and promotion would mean the A Colts were knocked out of 5th
place in the last game of the season by the barest of margins on percentage. We certainly didn’t take every opportunity presented through the year, either in key moments or in winning games we had the opportunity to. As a positive I felt and numbers showed we weren’t dominated through the year except for away games against Mount Lawley and University, which showed the evenness of the competition. Thanks to Andrew Harman for his assistance and insight into the playing group. Has he had done previously; he again took on the role for the Defensive group. His efforts in preparing this group each week was crucial. The Backline regularly stood up and didn’t allow the opposition the easy access to goal they were seeking. The manner in which ‘Bones’ plays is certainly something I was trying to instill into this group and to prepare and take the game on with the same amount of determination and willingness for contests. Beau Wardman came to the club this year from Wesley College and I am very grateful for his assistance. Beau’s preparation for football at this level and knowledge in the game will see him achieve his ambitions. The longer Wesley Curtin can encourage him to be around the club, it will be better for it. His ability to communicate with players contributed positively to the side. Beau imposed himself on the midfield group, a talented group of players who should all be looking to play senior football for Wesley Curtin in the next year or two. Well done to Hobbsy and the Brett Jones Colts. Don’t let this year be a waste, but use it to be a catalyst into 2014 in your own preparation for Senior Football. I see in previous years occasionally due to numbers they have had to forfeit and I thank the players who turned up every week and committed to making this proud club successful. Well done to the Award winners in all grades and to the sides that made finals. Thanks to the A Colts Leadership group – Tits, Joe, Brucey and Hoges (when you managed to get out) for your commitment both on and off the field. Earl, Steve and the League Squad – congratulations on your achievement and the manner and determination you showed. I hope it showed to the Colts players what you can achieve when you set your mind to it, prepare to the best of your ability and have faith in your teammates they will do the same. Thanks to Rod and the Committee and I wish everyone well through to the start of the 2014 Season and beyond.

What a fantastic season it was for the yellow and black this year. An A grade premiership - what a club to be a part of. On top of that nearly every team had a chance of finals going into the last 5 games, a great season to a great club. One of those teams that made finals was the Brumby Colts, this would be only the second time ever the second colts have made finals. It would take some remarkable coaching and strategy, luckily their coach was brilliant…what? It was me? The season started with a loss with the final in from the opposition’s 5 goal come back coming via a free kick from the new deliberate rushed behind rule. Not the best start. The next game we produced a fantastic win against a team that had dominated its first game and it seemed like our season was off to a good start, a narrow loss and a good win. The highs finished there for a while. At the halfway point of the season we were last with that second game victory our only one leaving us 1-8 midseason. At this time I was joking saying there is still a slim chance of finals with the team sitting in 5th with only 4 wins. Little did I realise that this would be the last time I joked about finals chances… After midseason the whole side lifted. Led by our courageous leader Kizza “The Beard” Giltrow we went on to win 4 games in a row, the team as a whole was playing good hard footy. The joke about making finals was now looking possible. After a loss to CBC we were still sitting 7th with the top 3 teams to play and needing to win all the games to make it. At this stage our football manager, Gerry asked what was our most likely outcome. Without being pessimistic I said we would probably finish 6th-7th with the realistic idea that we wouldn’t beat at least 2 of these teams. How happy I was to be proven wrong. Come our game against the top team Uni with the aid of a couple of first colts we beat them in a hard wet weather game of footy, leaving the dream of finals alive. The next week we played the now 4th placed whitfords. Another tough game, or so we thought. Playing against their 16 players to our mighty 25 we blew them out of the water by 20+ goals with Ryan Waldeck having a day out kicking 11. This percentage boosting victory would end up being very helpful in a few weeks. Now up against the now top team North Freo the boys needed to dig deep, which they did. This win as well as a result going our way meant we entered Round 18 in what was to be an elimination final, for whoever won, either us or TAs, would make the finals. In a good defensive game of football I can proudly say I have never celebrated a draw anywhere near as much as I did that day. Thanks to our percentage boost against Whitfords we made the top 5 by a mere 6%.
played fantastically hard through the midfield at the start but then when our midfield lifted he moved forward and was one of our key targets. He was still our go to man whenever it came to throwing someone in the guts to lift the team. Aido also stepped up as one of the leaders this year, and I’m really hoping next year he pushes himself to play higher for he definitely has the ability to. Best Defender-Reags had a fantastic season once I worked out where to play him. He started forward for me and looked quite solid but when we needed a fullback I chucked him down there and from a bit before mid season he played incredibly. He rarely lost to his opponent and outmarked the key forward numerous times. He loved to take the game on and run which made our solid last line of defence also a weapon. He sadly couldn’t break into the 1s side because of their solid defence but I would be hoping next year he would get more chances. Best Positional Player- Sparkles had his first year of colts after a solid year of seniors the year before and started the year like it, his ability to outbody opposition in the backline was fantastic. After Reags was pushed deep it meant he was allowed to move up into a half back role where he was great at cutting off the ball before it could even get into our defence. He liked to tell me how he could play forward, finally in our demolition of Whitfords he got his chance. He celebrated his mark but nowhere near as much as he celebrated his behind that was kindly given a goal. Most Determined- Maxy had a great season through the midfield and was our clearance king. The way he worked with what was my favourite person in the world, Max Wilson, to get the clearance really put our team in a great position from the start. That along with his voice and work rate helped Max top off a really good season of footy. I decided not to have a most improved this season which is nearly customary in the second colts but the team as a whole improved so much as a group that picking individuals would be too hard. There are awards I couldn’t give as the allocation was 5 but special mentions go to Monty- Coaches Favorite Award M.Wilson-Break my heart Award Wiktor- My Best friend Award Wiktor’s Missus- The reason Wiktor is my best friend Award Kizza G- Inspiration/Spiritual leader of the club Award
To our award winnersOur B&F went to Wiz, our Harry Potter on drugs lookalike. Wiz had a fantastic season, played consistently all year and I would say never lost to his opponent. He did magical things to outplay his man including his favourite handball on the ground around a player. He had a brilliant purple patch in mid season when we turned around our season which could very well have been the reason as to why we turned it all around.
I have to thank Woody for his help this year to be my runner and assistant, I know it’s not always easy for him to make games (especially when he’s driving people home in the morning) but I was very thankful for the help. Blake Taylor sadly got shin splints but instead of fading away he came and did my board most games which was also very helpful. To Gerry not just myself but the whole team thanks you for your advice and help on game day all season, it was so good for me to learn off you and for the players to get better guidance in their game. Your mentoring was very influential on me and I thank you very much. To Dymo, the transition on the colts coaching- was made smoother by your wise words of wisdom Ghandi and the job so much easier by being able to look so good by comparison. To Kizza E’s mum for being our 1# supporter when her son wasn’t in Europe. To our physio Maddy, your help to do more than just your job was the turning point in our season and I am very appreciative. To Todd and Beau, working alongside you guys this year was great. I felt we learnt a lot from each other. I learnt more about coaching and training structure, and you guys learnt I have no idea how to coach. To Earl thanks for not picking me this year so that I could focus on my coaching more, it was a noble sacrifice and both I and the club appreciate it. Finally to Drewy…..still bitter
Aido wins the 2nd colts runner up and had another great season. He
Go Tiges.
Playing in the final we were confident coming in after only dropping one game in the second half of the year and playing Whitfords, the team that gifted us finals because of the trashing we gave them. Sadly a strengthened Whitfords outfit proved too good and we were blown out by, well to be frank I can’t quite remember. Nevertheless I was still oddly happy and I am hoping the players were too as we made it from literally out of nowhere (even without peptides) and they should be equally proud.

2013 saw a big change for the Wesley Curtin Social Calendar, with all the ‘large functions’ held away from the clubrooms. We were very lucky that the Swan River Rowing Club at Canning Bridge was happy for us to be there this year and we’re looking forward to returning there next season! For the second year running, we took 6 of the postmatch presentations to major sponsor Broken Hill Hotel. Everyone enjoyed the change of scenery and the $10 meals that they put on for us. For the first time in recent memory, Mexicana was off the calendar and replaced by the fancy dress It Used To Be Cool Party as the first function of the year. By the end of the night, it was a similar result as Mexicana, with everyone well and truly sauced! There were some absolutely incredible costumes dug out from the bottom of the cupboard, with everyone embracing the theme! Special shout outs go to Cranners for his glorious Roller skating Fluro costume, and Slug and Morgs for the ‘Brad & Courtney from the Block’ costume. Also, a reminder to Sauce and Tits that they should come dressed as boxers form the 70’s and wear some gloves if they’re planning on fighting again at next year’s party! ‘H’ and the Pink Tiger team once again did an incredible job with Pink Tiger Day, this year setting a new record and raising over $30,000 for the Jane McGrath Foundation. It was a great day all round for the club, with the league side having a hard fought win over arch rival North Beach in the special ‘Pink Tiger’ jumpers! It was a great night afterwards with all the ladies in good spirits after being on the bubbly all day.
The club’s marquee event, the annual Tigerland Cocktail Party was held at down at the Swan River Rowing Club and was a return to the ‘glory days’, with a huge crowd in attendance. All of the gents were suited up and looking sharp and the ladies looked amazing in their cocktail dresses. Cale looked especially good in his suit when climbing through the rafters! Sammy Fielding did some of his career best work by bringing along 6 eligible ladies, one of which was on the receiving end of his trademark ‘rape smut’. It will definitely be a fond memory of the ‘good old days’ for Sam as he now looks to settle down and start a family with his new girlfriend. After a year off in 2012, The Tony Notte Memorial Reverse Raffle returned for one of the greatest nights in the history of the footy club, with TONY NOTTE actually attending to be the guest host for the night! Tony was a great sport and got around all the boys. Special thanks to Jako for organizing the night and Slug for teeing up Tony to attend! Highlights included Stevie’s effort at eating a dry wheatbix in under a minute and Lachie’s 10 cloves of garlic that he ate to get himself back in the draw, only to be drawn out the next ticket anyway! His night wasn’t all bad though, still managing to pick up at Hipee Club, even though his entire body smelt like garlic – lucky girl! Rocket took home the 1st prize and put the winnings over the bar the following week during the 3’s and 4’s games – thanks El Presidente! The Grand Final / Premiership weekend celebrations were taken to a new level this year, and with good reason, following the club’s first A Grade
Premiership. Starting at the South Perth Bowling Club on Saturday night, swimming through to Bones and Bobby’s place in the early hours of Sunday morning, and then back to the Bowls Club on Sunday at 10am. After a lot of beer and some bad punting, we then took a bus to the Claremont Hotel and Club Bay View to finish off Sunday, with veterans Joshy, Gravy, Cogs and Tails all seen on the Club Bay View dancefloor until stumps. Mad Monday was held at club sponsor Varisty Bar in Nedlands with a huge group of players, sponsors and old boys turning up to finish off the celebrations. Highlights included the numerous shout outs to Chazzzz and Anzac, and also one of the biggest upsets in sporting history with Gravy out-sprinting and out-sculling Jacko Dennis in the first annual Vasity Bar Underwear Sprint! (I still think that the stopwatch must have been broken). All of the boys that were drinking the ‘winners piss’ over Grand Final weekend send a huge thank you to all of the footy club, club sponsors and past-players who put money over the bar at every venue we were at! Thanks to Wesley Curtin Footy Club, Rocket, ‘H’ & Sue, Earl, Coops, Matty Pound and Varisty Bar, Broken Hill Hotel and Graham Percival. There was a great team of Social Mad Dogs assembled this year and none of this would have been possible without them - everyone put in a huge effort. Thanks to Michael ‘Chummy’ Roberts, Rafe ‘Got’ Wood, Andrew ‘Cunners’ Cunningham, Al ‘Smithy’ Smith, Scotty ‘Hobbsy’ Hobbs, Brad ‘Horse’ Horsman, Nick ‘Cheese’ Belfrage, Dustin ‘Maysie’ May, and Jako ‘No C’ Jakowenko.
I need to make special mention of a few more people whose support and help was invaluable throughout the year; - Dymo, Rocket and ‘H’ for their support and advice over the year - Mad Dog DJs, Tails and Cutler, for a huge effort behind the decks at the functions this year. - All the ‘others’ who helped out with the setups, bar work during the season and at events - Bobby for delivery all of the beer every week and for the parties - Judy for working the bar at home games and also doing a superstar job at cleaning the Rowing Club and Clubrooms after functions and events. I’m sure we wouldn’t have been allowed back if it weren’t for her meticulous cleaning efforts! - And lastly, thanks to all the players and ‘social members’ who attended all the events. We’ll be looking to get some of the Colts and Ex-Colts involved a lot more in 2014, so if you’re interested in being involved, make sure you put your hand up at the start of next season! We’re all looking forward to repeating the success of 2013 next year, both on and off the field! Cheers, Jesse & the Social Mad Dogs 2013
2013 was a fantastic year for the club, bringing home the A-grade premiership for the first time in the history of the club! It was also an historic occasion for the WAAFL - the first time a club has won the premiership the same year it was promoted to the A grade. On the back of that victory, we have also had a fantastic financial year; the club was able to make a surplus of $7,130. This result was due to an increase in sales over the bar, sponsorship and a reduction in some of our key costs throughout the season. From an income perspective, we have managed to increase our bar sales income by about 30% from last year which has come from a bigger turnout of our player group throughout the year on Thursday and Saturday nights. “H” has had another massive year with the sponsors, collecting $58,000 worth of sponsorship. His efforts year in and year out are the major reason the club is as financially healthy as it is, so a big thanks to him and all of our sponsors. The wine sales were strong once again. Thanks to everyone who participated in this, as it is our major fundraiser for the year. On the expense side, we have halved our expenditure on medical supplies so thanks to Kahlia and the other physio’s for the efforts managing this cost all year. We have also had a jump in umpire costs following our move into the A-grade competition; however this cost has almost been fully offset by our membership and ball fees. This is a pleasing result, as our match day costs are by far our biggest cost. Thanks again to all the committees and helpers for their hard work this year, it has really paid off. Special thanks also to Mel and Judy, who have done a massive job behind the bar all year. Finally, congratulations to all the teams, especially the A-grade grand final winners. This has been a historic year for the club, to come from a B-grade premiership and follow it up with an A-grade premiership. It has been fantastic to be a part of the success. Thanks, Tom

The “best clubman” award is presented to an individual who makes a contribution to our club that is above that, which we as a club, could normally expect. It may be that their effort far exceed their designated role, or they have no official role, but make an outstanding contribution to the club, nevertheless.
The Wesley Curtin Football Club is proud to announce that the 2013 winner is Jesse Wilson. As our Social Convener Jesse has ensured that we have once again had a sensational year off the field, as well as on. He has now been in this role for 2 years (has been on the Social Committee for the last 4 years) and has committed huge amounts of his time to making sure Wesley Curtin has one of the best Social scenes in the league. Together with his social committee, we see the smooth running of all of our functions as well as the club bar. In addition to his social duties Jesse has also played a major role as both a senior player and leader at the club, as well as been a very active sponsor. Throughout the off season Jesse was heavily involved in the recruitment of players to the club and went out of his way to make new players feel a part of the club immediately. It is no surprise that new recruits quickly embraced the club after a big day at “Throwing of The Grape” !! As a sponsor, through his company Professional Misconduct he also played a significant role in Pink Tiger Day as well as our Sportsmans Luncheon. It is fantastic to see Jesse receive this prestigious award as acknowledgement of his massive contribution to the club not only this year, but over many years.
The Most Meritorious Award is awarded for the most outstanding football performance for the year.
This years Most Meritorious award goes to Stephen Gravina. 2013 has been a massive season for the club and in no small way is this due to the outstanding performance of the club captain once again. In our eyes, Steve was clearly the best and most valuable player in the A Grade competition this year. While it is disappointing that the umpires failed to acknowledge his dominant season in casting their votes for the A Grade Association F & B, there is no doubt that Gravy’s opponents knew who they most needed to respect. Steve has this year won his 6th League Fairest & Best award, which is a new club record. His uncompromising and fearless approach to his football and his inspirational leadership of the team has been the cornerstone of the club’s inaugural A Grade premiership. Immediately after the B Grade flag last year, Gravy has had a single minded approach to bringing together a group of players with a goal to achieving the ultimate success. To say he has led from the front would be the greatest understatement of all time! Time after time during the season, particularly when tight games were up for grabs, it was the skipper who would find that extra effort to lift the team over the line. His unwavering commitment to the cause has been a great example to all players in the club and has set the bar extremely high for all to aspire to in the future. Congratulations Gravy
And the winner is....Grant Edmunds. Grant would have to be the most organised coach I know. He is also very passionate about coaching and the club. This year he was very unlucky to miss the finals (losing 3 games by under a goal, after leading late in all of them) but never let any of his match day disappointments interfere with the league game or his willingness to help out in any capacity required. Congratulations Grant you truly are a worthy winner of this award.

COACH J Edmo Assistant Coach Stevo Reid Waterboy Jayne St Quintin
Goal Umpires Daniel Wilson & Adam Spurling
Forward Pocket - Rocket
During grand final week at the club, Stevo was harassing Rocket about his goal kicking prowess (after Stevos match sealing goal in the integrated footy gf ). So when called to defend his credentials as the most prolific small forward/president this clubs ever had Rocket dutifully took Stevo on in a goal kicking contest, from 25m out directly in front the forward pocket rocket slammed home 9 out of 10, while Stevo and his carer could only manage a lowly 6 out of 10. Look to see everyone singing him happy birthday at the awards dinner.
Full Forward - The Penguin
Had another outstanding season in the 5s stars, mixing all that playing around with minor bleeding and massive amounts of back hair I can see why he brings swanny coffee before any sessions he has with him, maybe try something stronger next time.
Other Forward Pocket - Slug
Was as committed to the cause for the 2s this year as any one has ever been, was forever there to get any of his teammates backs when they needed him, whether this be with a shepherd, tackle, constructive talk or kicking an opposition player to earn a red card, well done slug, oh and 2s FnB, go figure.
Half Forward Flank - Conor
New to the club this year, but fit in perfectly, had a good mix of footy ability and drinking nouse, spent most of the early stages of the year working off his driving infringements so was rarely seen at training. Then had a great trip to Bali where not only did he spend some cash on some new ink, but decided to run a scooter off the road and earned himself a $1500 bill and 1 week off footy injured.
Centre Half Forward - Sammy G
Talk about playing under duress, never in my time at yearbook HQ has anyone been selected under done, we always make the players pass the most stringent fitness tests, not sure how we test this one out though, Sammy managed to get through the finals campaign with a twisted testicle. Just run it out sammy... Fortunately he knows a good physio.
Other Half Forward Flank - Rafe
This kid is a definite asset to the club, not only was he a massive help to Hobbsy (the worst coach the 2nd colts have ever had) and the 2nd colts, he was also seen behind the bar more than any other member of the social committee this year, must be the incriminating video circling of him loosing a finger when out with the colts.
Wing - Dymo
Once again makes it into the team, this year maybe more legitimately than in previous. Did get the award for quote of the year when the Whitfords peanut gallery were questioning the clubs allocation of funds “thats why he gets paid the big bucks” Whitfords peanut, “Nah we spend all our money on trucks” Dymo...
Centre - Gravy
“Four League Best and Fairests in a row and finally some umpire recognition, finishing runner up in the association count and getting best on in the GF. Maybe gravy should have used all the times that the umpires haven’t been watching him buy belting blokes behind the play, oh well too late now.” Gravy must not have read last years all stars, the umpires are watching - you can’t just belt Uni guys in the head in the 3rd quarter of a grand final and not expect to get yellow carded... oh and has now won his 5th club Best and Fairest in a row (and 6 total) fair effort that...
Wing - Quainny
Was a bit soft this year, after fracturing a couple of vertebrae and spending 6 months getting physio with Swanny, he managed to injure himself in his first game back. But the real reason for his selection this year, isn’t for keeping Swanny in work but for his efforts after the 4stars prelim final loss, was BOG at the Windsor where he proceeded to empty the contents of his stomach at the bar, then at the kebab shop. The highlight for me was the 4am phone call to TCQ to come collect his son, finally getting some back... number 4 your chicken sweet corn soup is ready.
Half Back Flank - Lloydie
What a display grand final day. Conveniently arranged to park his car at the house of a “new friend” who lived close to the ground, when all the other partiers had turned in Lloydie made the 4:30am booty call to collect his car. And was a striking Dorothy at mad monday.
Centre Half Back - Josh Vick
Picked to help Dorothy find the wizard of OZ, was an excellent Scarecrow mad monday, and also took a ripping mark that yearbook HQ deemed mark of the year. He could have taken about 6 more ripping marks but instead Jackoviched the sh*t out of the ball.
Other Half Back Flank - Max
Rounds out the trio that went to find the wizard of OZ, was the tin man this year, after his weekend at burnies impersonation last year. Maybe should have picked a different costume though, as it turns out the tin mans hat is a funnel... its fair to say that ended any chance of Max not repeating last years efforts.
Back Pocket - Wiktor
Every year this happens, some young colt with no idea turns up with one of the hottest girlfriends you’re ever likely to see, picked solely on the basis of his mrs form, and can someone help hobbsy out, he’s all in a lather.
Full Back - Hank Scorpion
Its Scorpio Homer but thats ok. Turned up this year from Mt Lawley, and as it turns out is possibly the future son-in-law of one Ken “Potsy” Pride, we’ve stuck him in at full back because this year the all stars are playing against a Wesley Curtin legends team and rumour has it Potsy is lining up at full forward, lets see the sparks fly.
Back Pocket - The Beard
Pick for generally having the most amusing facebook profile of any one, ever. In fact the beard probably picked its self. Was also given the nod for chasing down the bird that filmed Rafe’s missing finger and managed to convince her to give him the video. Was also the major reason for the 2nd colts turn around, it had nothing to do with coaching.
Ruck - The Sauce
Once again Sauce finds himself in the ruck, possibly not in our team though. He is noted for his fondness of Swan Athletic and has been seen joining their warm ups, all this and he plays so well at TAs home ground, you would think he would switch clubs maybe might play more than 1 good game a year.
Ruck Rov - Joe Nicholls
Fines master for the colt, sounds like a tough gig, how do you get any money from broke Uni students? Joe is a master, managed to collect close to $2k from the boys which they then dutifully spent on booze. Fair to say the beards fb posts were quality that day.
Rover - Tails
Had a massive game in the A Grade GF and snared the BJ Giles award for BOG for his tagging effort on Cousins, was then awarded his spot in the team for continuing his tagging effort at the Claremont on mad Monday when he spotted Cousins at the bar trying to order a cocktail (he plays for uni so I can only assume it was something with an umbrella), so Tails swept in and got his arm across in front of him to block him out again!
Coach - J Edmo
Had a stellar year as coach of the 5s, managed to get them over the line for the most victories that the 5s have ever registered in a season. Massive effort that, and all they had to do was enter a team sheet. Even CBC couldn’t cheat their way to victory, Edmo got the 4 points on that occasion too. So the ladder read 5 wins all by forfeit...
Assistant Coach - Stevo Reid
Was back at the club after a long absence and Manning Rippers said they were full, was welcomed back like he had never left and slotted straight into training. His biggest value though was his insights into tactics and strategy and favours a simple game plan of USE THE SPINE... something that all our coaches could try to bring into their games.
Waterboy - Jayne St Quintin
Put her hand up at the start of the year to don the fluro vest and deliver water for any team (was in training for a marathon), the decision was vetoed by Gravy, much to Jaynes displeasure and dismay, don’t worry Jayne yearbook HQ can fit you into our team.
Interchange Deano Lawton - Early in the year Earl had a small BBQ at his place for some of the new players to the club, Deano rolled up
sporting a new tattoo, and quizzically asked where Earl had played his footy. Just click the link Deano all will be revealed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earl_Spalding Chaff - Back to the club this year after some WAFL experience and travel experience, was noted for his hard man attitude and willingness to punch North Beach guys in the face, had all of north beach fuming and half their crowd wanting to take their teeth out and have a crack at him... Crowd Nuffy - Coops makes the team this year for his impeccable calls during the TA and Uni games, was a notable absentee from any bench area during the finals campaign and was reduced to wearing a tiger suit to amuse the children on GF day. Sub - Yak - Reinvented himself this year, even to the point of changing his nickname. Was noted for not being noticed during games. Was questioned by Edmo about if he was playing this year (in a recruiting bid for the 5s) while still wearing his footy gear after a game. Has anyone seen Yak?
Goal Umpire - Adam Spurling - Selected as he most closely resembles AFL Goal Umpire Daniel Wilson. Unlucy to miss selection Dunny - Has never been selected in the team, we’re not going to change things now.
Tim Scotty - Was too tight to pay the $3 registration fee, and still owes the 3s fines the $50 wanker tax.
