CAMPBELLSVILLE UNIVERSITY

Campbellsville University was founded in 1906 by the Russell Creek Baptist Association as Russell Creek Academy in Campbellsville, Ky. In 1924 the institution became known as Campbellsville Junior College. She made the transition to a four-year college in 1960 and reached university status in 1996, changing the name once again to become Campbellsville University. Now in her 109th year of service, Campbellsville continues to see unprecedented growth in terms of enrollment, construction of new facilities, renovation of existing facilities and producing successful graduates. Nestled between the Cumberland Plateau and the Appalachian Mountains, Taylor County and Campbellsville, Ky., serve as home to Campbellsville University. Taylor County, population of about 25,000, is located in the geographical center of Kentucky, only 85-90 miles away from Bowling Green, Lexington and Louisville. The university family gives back to the community through service and time but also provides a more than $105 million economic impact to the area. CU is ranked 81st on the U.S. News & World Report’s list of top regional universities in the South. It is also listed among America’s Best Christian Colleges, rated as a Military Friendly School and has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. With a student body comprising more than 3,500 students from 97 Kentucky counties, 30 U.S. states and 37 foreign countries, Campbellsville University has a diverse cultural mix on her campus. The university is also noted for a strong faculty with over 70 percent of her professors holding a Ph.D. or the highest degree in their field of study and a low student/faculty ratio of 13 to 1. Campbellsville offers certificates of study along with 80 undergraduate options, as well as 17 master’s degrees and seven postgraduate and pre-professional areas. The 101-acre university campus features a total of 64 buildings. In the past 19 years there have been more than 30 major renovations or new construction projects. The university also features satellite centers in Louisville, Elizabethtown and Somerset as well as developing a strong online presence. CU holds dual athletic membership in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and the National Christian College Athletics Association (NCCAA) and is a member of the Mid-South Conference. In addition to these organizations, CU sports teams also compete in the Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association, United States Bowling Congress, United States Archery Association and National Cheer Association. With more than 700 student-athletes, CU fields 27 teams in 17 sports, and Campbellsville’s student-athletes and coaches are consistently being recognized for their success in the MSC and on the national level. 2

RUSTY HOLLINGSWORTH

(Carson-Newman ’86, Tennessee ’94) Director of Athletics, Campbellsville University (15th Year) tional tournaments at either the NAIA, National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) or Women’s Collegiate Wrestling Association (WCWA) levels. The women’s basketball program reached Campbellsville’s first NAIA national championship game, finishing NAIA runner-up. The women’s wrestling program finished second in the WCWA national championship, and the men’s tennis team went on to win its second NCCAA National Title in four years. With all the success, Hollingsworth was voted by his peers as the Mid-South Conference Athletics Director of the Year. During his tenure, 17 of Campbellsville’s 21 NAIA, NCCAA or WCWA individual or team national championships have been won. In April 2011, Hollingsworth was named the Under Armour NAIA Southeast Athletic Director of the Year by the National Association of College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). He has been named the Mid-South Conference Athletic Director of the Year in 2004, 2010 and 2015. Over the past 14 years, Campbellsville has built a solid reputation under Hollingsworth for a strong academic showing. In 2014-15, CU had 119 student-athletes named All-Academic Mid-South Conference and 96 of those were named NAIA Scholar-Athlete. Also, CU led the nation with 18 teams being named NAIA Scholar-Team by recording 3.0 GPAs or higher. In 2010, the CU wrestling team was named the NAIA All-Academic team for having the best GPA in the nation. Several CU programs have also been named NAIA Scholar Teams. CU student-athletes are also an example of character, as a record-breaking eight student-athletes were named MSC Champions of Character for their respective sport. That makes 15 recipients for CU in the past three years. In 2010, the Lady Tiger basketball team and Tiger football team were both named the Champion of Character team for their sport by the NAIA. Both swim programs earned the honor in 2014. Hollingsworth came to Campbellsville in 2001 from Tennessee Wesleyan College where he was dean of students and director of financial aid. He was also the associate director of admissions, athletics eligibility coordinator and assistant director of financial aid/ financial aid compliance officer for athletes at Carson-Newman College. He is a member of the NAIA Athletics Directors Association Board of Directors and the NCCAA National Eligibility Committee. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Carson-Newman College in 1986 and graduated with his master’s degree from the University of Rusty Hollingsworth was one of 31 CU athletic staff members who traveled Tennessee in 1994. to Costa Rica in the summer of 2014 to share the love of Jesus Christ.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Rusty Hollingsworth is in his 15th season as Campbellsville University’s director of athletics and continues to lead the program in terms of facilities, new programs and competitiveness. During his tenure, Hollingsworth has administered the addition of numerous facilities: the new wrestling facility, Hawkins Athletic Complex, Gosser Gymnasium, the Kelly Hall Tennis facility, Indoor Practice Facility and the Montgomery-Haydon Soccer Field. He has also led renovations to the football and baseball stadiums, and is working on plans for further facility upgrades. He also has overseen the addition or reinstatement of 12 athletic programs during his tenure. Campbellsville’s athletic teams have also seen unparalleled success under Hollingsworth’s guidance. In 2009-10 and 2010-11, the coaching staff captured the institution’s first and second Mid-South Conference President’s Cups, thanks to the Tigers’ 13 combined MSC regular season championships in the two seasons. In 2014-15, CU athletics had its best year since Hollingsworth’s arrival. CU brought home five MSC regular season championships (football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, softball and baseball), and there was also five individual MSC championships (women’s bowling doubles and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field). In addition, the Tiger basketball team won the MSC tournament and cheerleading won the MSC competition for a total of 12 MSC championships. CU also had six coaches named MSC Coach of the Year in their respective sport, and Keith Adkins was named NAIA/NABC Men’s Basketball Coach of the Year. 2014-2015 ACHIEVEMENTS

CHEERLEADERS

The Campbellsville University Tiger Cheerleaders have a winning tradition in competitive cheerleading. CU claimed its sixth Mid-South Conference title in 2014-15, including five of the last seven and claimed the MSC’s first championship in 1998. In the 1990s, CU cheerleading was among the best in the nation, winning the COA Collegiate Championship in 1995 and the National Christian College Cheerleading Championship in 1996. CU cheerleading has placed in the Top six at the NCA/NAIA Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla., two of the last four seasons.

The railroad hasn’t moved through Campbellsville since the mid-1980s, but it’s not uncommon to hear the horn of a train on Saturdays in the fall. Located at the southwestern corner of the stadium inside the Greg Vaughn Pavilion in the Dave Fryrear 12th Man Club, the whistle is blown when the Tigers take the field and each time they score.

MARCHING BAND

TRADITIONS

TRAIN HORN

Tiger Marching Band celebrates its 24th year this fall. Founded in 1992 by Dr. David McCullough, the 90-member band performs at Campbellsville home football games and exhibitions throughout the Commonwealth each fall. Part of the band’s tradition is performing “My Old Kentucky Home” before each home game.

CLAWZ

Clawz became the new name of Campbellsville University’s mascot in 2001. Each football game, Clawz can be found roaming the sidelines and grandstand of Finley Stadium when he is not counting the Tigers’ points with pushups.

1987 - REINSTATEMENT OF VARSITY PROGRAM

The Tiger football program was dormant for 50 years until athletic director Don Bishop, the Athletics Boosters’ Club and athletics committee worked to restore the program in 1987. With the approval of then president Dr. W.R. Davenport, former Russell Country High School coach Ron Finley was hired to lead the program’s rebirth.

TRADITIONS

The first four-year varsity program began in 1988 with no scholarships, one full-time assistant coach, five part-time assistants and only a part-time trainer. At the time, few people realized how successful the football program would become, with more than 100 football players enrolling each fall – an increased enrollment that helped offset the original expenses involved in setting up the program. Davenport said that the addition of the program “changed the course of the institution.” Campbellsville hosted Centre College for its first game Sept. 10, 1988 at what is now known as Finley Stadium. While the ’88 season ended with a 0-11 record, the Tigers captured their first victory on Sept. 9, 1989 with a 20-16 win over the University of Evansville. Campbellsville scored with 21 seconds remaining to pull off the historic win in front of a home crowd. The following year was Finley’s first winning season with the Tigers (8-2) earning the program’s first national ranking and Finley a Coach of the Year honor. The ’90s became the Tigers’ best decade, as they rose to a No. 2 national ranking in the sixth week of the 1991 season. The Tigers maintained a Top 10 ranking until their undefeated run ended at Lambuth University, 35-31, in week nine. The Tigers narrowly missed the postseason after falling at Georgetown College to end the year. However, the 1992 season ended on a different note. Campbellsville knocked off Georgetown for the first time in program history, 29-27, at home on Nov. 14. The win clinched the Tigers’ first MidSouth Football Conference Championship in a three-way tie for first with Georgetown and Union College. Campbellsville topped Georgetown again in 1996 and 1997, leading to an outright Mid-South championship and the program’s first NAIA playoff appearance in 1997. The decade closed with a Tiger assistant being named the American Football League Assistant Coach of the Year for three consecutive years (Sam Wickliffe, Eric Graves and Haywood Riner) - tying for the most of any school in all of college football. Campbellsville returned to the postseason in 2000, playing Baker University in the KWTO Bowl. The following year, CU posted its best record in school history (10-3) and advanced to the NAIA Final Eight against Georgetown. Finley ended his college coaching career in 2002 with a 77-81-1 record. After the growing pain years of 1988 and 1989, Finley’s Tigers posted a 75-63 record and were 43-32 in his last seven seasons. Mark Peach served as head coach for two seasons before being replaced in 2005 by former Campbellsville athletic director and Carson-Newman College assistant Jim Deaton. Perry Thomas was hired in 2008 with the mission of restoring the Tiger football program to prominence. He returned the Tigers to the postseason in 2010 and 2011 with trips to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Victory Bowl. The Tigers defeated Greenville College (Ill.) to win the 2011 Victory Bowl title. In 2014, Thomas led the Tigers to the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 2001, as CU won a share of the Mid-South Conference West Division.

FOOTBALL FACILITIES

FOOTBALL FACILTIES

The H&W Sports Shop/Ronnie Hord Fieldhouse served as the original home of the Fighting Tiger football locker room until the Hawkins Athletic Center was built in 2003. Today, the facility is home to softball and women’s soccer and men’s soccer. On game days, the men’s soccer locker room is used for visiting teams, and the softball/women’s soccer locker room is used for officials.

Completed in 2003, the 10,000-square-foot Hawkins Athletic Center serves as home to Tiger football and baseball. The facility is located between Powell Athletic Center and the Indoor Practice Facility. Football related facilities include: the CU athletics weight room (below), football locker room, coaches’ offices, conference rooms and classrooms used for team meetings and watching game film. The Indoor Practice Facility was built in 2004 with an artificial turf floor and athletic netting around the walls. It is used by a wide variety of athletic teams for practice throughout the year. The Campbellsville University athletics weight room was renovated in summer 2013. New weight racks, weight plates and dumbbells were installed, along with new wooden platforms with the five core character values of the Champions of Character Initiative: respect, responsibility, integrity, servant leadership and sportsmanship

The Indoor Practice Facility was built in 2004 and is the home for all CU athletic teams. All teams use the facility througout the year when weather becomes an issue for practice outside. The 8,000-square-foot facility has three batting cages for baseball and softball, a pull across net to cut the facility in half and can be wide open for full-team practices. 10

In 2014, Thomas led Campbellsville to one of the biggest turnaround in all of college football, reversing a 3-7 record to go 7-3 in the regular season and claim a share of the Mid-South Conference West Division championship - the program’s first MSC title since 1997, and third overall. The title, aided by two wins over Top 5 opponents, clinched an automatic bid to the NAIA Football Championship Series for the first time since 2001. Thomas inherited the Campbellsville University football program in December 2007, coming off an 0-10 season. After posting a 3-8 record his first season in 2008, and finishing runner-up in the MidSouth Conference East Division in 2009 at 7-4, Thomas’ program was named the 20th most improved program in all levels of college football and the sixth most improved in the NAIA. In 2010, he posted a 7-5 record, giving the Tigers their first back-to-back winning season in nearly a decade and took CU to the postseason for the first time since 2001 with a trip to the NCCAA Victory Bowl. The Tigers returned to the Victory Bowl in 2011, winning their first NCCAA title on their home field. During the 2009 season, Thomas put Campbellsville’s defense among the nation’s best in third down situations and inside the Red Zone, as the Tigers posted their first winning season since 2004 and best finish since 2003, at 7-4. He led the Tigers to their first win over rival Georgetown College since 1997, with a 28-21 victory at home and also knocked off a Top 10 team in Shorter College, 42-28, in the CollegeFanz/NAIA National Game of the Week. During the season, the Tigers returned to the NAIA National Rankings for the first time in five seasons, ranking as high as No. 24 and finishing the year at No. 28. As a first-year college head coach in 2008, Thomas coached

Coming off the first MSC title since 1997 and first NAIA Playoff appearance since 2001, Campbellsville Tiger football will have a bulls eye on its back starting the 2015 season. The Tigers bring back 17 of 22 starters for the 2015 schedule. With the rotation of teams throughout the MSC, the Tigers took Georgetown College, Belhaven and Kentucky Christian off the schedule. Coach Perry Thomas added Union College, University of Pikeville and Bluefield – all MSC East Division teams. DEFENSE Thomas will once again serve as defensive coordinator for the Tigers’ base 3-4 defense. Eight starters return on defense, but the Tigers will be missing their two leading tacklers from last season and MSC First Team performers – Daniel DeLeon and Blake Young – who helped CU rank No. 6 in the NAIA in rushing yards allowed per game at 103.

DEFENSIVE LINE Campbellsville returns depth to the defensive line with 2014 All-Commonwealth team recipient Dekwain Tarrance leading the way. He will start the season flanked by fellow senior Sylan-Drake Mayes and a transfer from Gainsville, Fla. sophomore Michael Linton. LINEBACKERS The four in the 3-4 defense will have a little different look in 2015. The Tigers graduated their top two leading tacklers from last season in Blake Young and Daniel DeLeon. Young finished his career as the Tigers all-time leading tackler with 366. DeLeon was named the MSC West Division Player of the Year in 2014 with 96 tackles. CU brings back senior Bryson Bell and Stephon Tanga at the linebacker position. Tanga finished with the third-most tackles in 2014 with 69.

SECONDARY With new defensive backs coach Will Snyder taking over in the winter of 2014, the Tigers secondary has a new energy and swagger in camp. Returners Percy Minor and Marquis Cain bring aggression and athleticism to the secondary having an outstanding 2014 seasons. Minor led the team competing for a two-deep spot in fall camp.

OFFENSE Rick Gehres returns to coach his fourth season leading the Tigers high-powered offense. Campbellsville ranked third in the NAIA last season in throwing yards per game and took advantage of the arm of University of Kentucky transfer Jacob Russell. But this season, Russell doesn’t have his favorite two targets from last year, as wide receivers Demytreus Gipson and Trevon Chatman graduated. OFFENSIVE LINE

QUARTERBACKS

WIDE RECEIVERS

Jacob Russell came on the scene in 2014 and stole the show for the Tigers offense. The University of Kentucky transfer broke 12 records in his first year and is on pace to shatter multiple others. Although Russell was one of the best in the NAIA, Campbellsville showed its ability to be versatile. Tajh Milliken brings another style of offense to play with his speed and athleticism and can run the Wildcat package but can also sit in the pocket and launch the ball down field. The quarterback position will be the most watched on the field in 2015.

The wide receiver position was the most hit by graduation in 2014-15. Russell lost his favorite targets in Demytreus Gipson and Trevon Chatman who both wrote their names in the record books. Now Jarrod Harrington will look to pick up the slack in his senior season. Tajh Milliken will see playing time at quarterback and wide receiver. Tyus Alcorn and Nathan Case will add depth and freshman Keanu Young will come in and see playing time early in his rookie season.

RUNNING BACKS After moving from defense to offense in 2014, AJ Strong returns to the Tigers backfield looking to provide balance in the heavy throwing attack. Strong led CU by averaging almost 40 rushing yards per game. Also, sophomore Wade Holtzclaw returns for his second season after transferring from Eastern Kentucky University. Jacob Russell broke 12 records in his first season as a Tiger. Photo by Jordan Alves

THE 2015 SEASON

For the second straight year, the offensive line is the most experienced position. The Tigers bring back all five offensive linemen – Leonard Mallory, Blake Cordell, Caleb Myers, Trent Massey and Tanner Graves. These five will need to run block and also give Russell time in the pocket for the Tigers to be one of the best in the NAIA.

Jarrod Harrington will be looked on to carry the work load on the offense after the loss of Trevon Chatman and Demytreus Gipson. Photo by Richard RoBards.

SPECIAL TEAMS Senior Erik Krivitsky returns for his fourth season as the Tiger punter. Krivitsky averaged just above 37 yards a punt in 2014 with a long of 58 yards. His ability to pin opponents deep in their own red zone is crucial, as he had 13 punts inside the 20-yard line. Will Ward returns as the Tiger place-kicker after making 9-of-11 field goals in 2014 with a long of 40 yards. Also, sophomore Bradley Bates proved himself as a valid backup after seeing action in 2014. 27

2014 REVIEW

For the first time since 1997, Campbellsville University won a share of the 2014 Mid-South Conference Championship. The Tigers went 4-1 inside the MSC West Division and reached the NAIA Playoffs for the first time since 2001. Although the Tigers lost to Saint Xavier in the first round of the playoffs, the 7-4 record was the fourth seven-win season in Perry Thomas’ seven seasons as head coach. The 2014 schedule began with arguably the biggest rival in the conference. Campbellsville and Lindsey Wilson College met in the Battle of Highway 55 for the second time in as many seasons for the opener and the game did not disappoint. It was a record-breaking night, but Campbellsville fell just shy of upsetting No. 18 Lindsey Wilson College in a 44-40 loss at Finley Stadium. Jacob Russell broke the school record for most yards in a game at 414 yards on 26-of-39 passing in his first game as a Tiger. He also threw a single-game record-tying five touchdown passes. Three of those were to senior Trevon Chatman, which tied the single-game record for most TD catches in a game. Chatman also broke the most catches in a game with 12. That kickstarted a three-game win streak for the Tigers in September as they went perfect throughout the month. CU defeated Webber International, Bethel University and Belhaven University with a combined score of 95-20. The high-powered offense was silenced by Kentucky Christian University. The Tigers struggled through the air on the cold and windy afternoon in Grayson, Ky., falling to the Knights, 12-6. Campbellsville went on to play its final six games against ranked opponents. The first came way of rival Georgetown College on Homecoming. The Tigers in maroon and gray knocked off the third ranked Georgetown Tigers, 28-24, with one of the most exciting wins in Finley Stadium history. It was only the fifth time in history CU knocked off Georgetown. Demytreus Gipson joined offensive coordinator Rick Gehres and

30

Stan Warrenhuffman as the only Campbellsville University receivers with 2,000 receiving yards in their career with an 85yard performance against GC. The Tigers entered the NAIA Top 25 at No. 23 for the first time all season after the win over Georgetown then traveled to Lebanon, Tenn. to face No. 15 Cumberland University. CU dominated the stat line but was unable to get stops when it mattered in the second half. Leading 10-3 late in the second quarter, the Bulldogs scored 24 consecutive points and beat CU, 27-17. The Tigers outgained Cumberland 437 yards to 224 in the loss. The loss awakened Campbellsville, though, and the Tigers pulled off three wins in a row throughout November. CU defeated University of the Cumberlands in style, 58-12 - the first time the Tigers beat the Patriots since 2002. Campbellsville hosted No. 4 Faulkner University and won its second straight home game against a Top 5 opponent. CU pulled off the 30-21 win in the NAIA Game of the Week. The Tigers sealed their first MSC title since 1997 with a 31-14 win over No. 22 Reinhardt University. Campbellsville traveled to Saint Xavier University in Chicago, Ill. for the first round of the NAIA Playoffs but came up short. CU had two late opportunities but was unable to reclaim its lead late in a 38-35 loss. All of Campbellsville’s 35 points came through the air as the duo of Trevon Chatman (3) and Demytreus Gipson (2) pulled in all five TDs. Both Chatman and Gipson finished the season with 12 touchdowns - breaking a 12-year record first set by Shane Riley in 2002 of 11 TD catches. Gipson also broke Riley’s single-season receiving yards record (1,009) and finished the year with 1,083 yards. Gipson had 999.
