Dear Readers, Words fail me as I try to gather my thoughts on this very emotional occasion, a first significant milestone in our journey; our 5th anniversary in this avatar of magazine. It is indeed a momentous occasion sufficient enough to overwhelm anyone and we are no exception. But however momentous, moments are for passing and before we realise we are on the threshold of stepping into the next quarter; and next year, the journey of life, consumer education and standing up for Indian Consumer’s rights as has been our motto always. So I reflected upon what is different for us in this edition. And I realized that I hit on the hot button when I decided that we would dedicate this edition largely to thank our patrons, our subscribers and most importantly our content providers to whom we owe quality of articles and content. Yes, I know I would not be overstating this when I say about the kind of content that we have been churning out over these last few years. I had the privilege of personally speaking to the Corporate Communications teams, the PR teams of many a large Corpprate /PSU/Bank as part of seeking our feed back which is the true ‘CustomerAwaaz’ for us. And I am proud to share with all of you that we always had always received a feedback that would translate into a four and a half stars on five from who is who of the above departments. While I do not deny the fact that there have been ideas and suggestions to add more innovative content and bring about more informative articles, we always have received an extremely positive rating for our content. And whom else can we thank profusely here other than our invaluable content providers!! The title and design: "When Oxford turned Orthodox" of your recent magazine is so apt to the current times. Sanaathana dharma has taught us all these practices and people who wanted scientific evidence for all these rituals, got loads of it in all the countries. Let us respect the vast accumulated experience of our forefathers conveyed to us as rituals.

I recently came across Customer Awaaz magazine and I feel it is genuine and focuses on core and some common but important issues. Very useful to the common man as It speaks about issues that one generally goes through and gives a guidance on means. Also, they have started with a junior awaaz column that looks to provide an opportunity for the young talented kids. My son had got the chance to display his art through the column. I wish all the best for the magazine.

Consumers have been bestowed with six fundamental rights; Right to safety, Right to be informed, Right to choose, Right to be heard, Right to seek redressal and Right to consumer education. Customer Awaaz since its inception has been propagating, promoting, supporting and bringing to fore core issues pertaining to these rights. While the right to obtain information on the quantity, consistency, purity, strength, and quality of products and services is the rights of the customer, many a time even big established brands tend to leeway and use it to their advantage. Customer Awaaz has been consistently providing platform to consumers as well as experts in these fields to academicians and policy makers to share their views, even if they are dissenting and deviant from the current statute with a sole purpose to provide a healthy debate. It has also initiated a unique section of ‘Junior Awaaz’ to promote the voices of children, their views about environment and social changes effecting their lives or issues related to teenage and adolescence, peer stress in this age, career counselling etc. India has a still long way to go till we see equitable rights of consumers being respected and honoured, I feel Customer Awaaz is playing a very crucial role in this journey, I congratulate the team at Customer Awaaz on their 5th Anniversary and wish that we will get to read more informative news and content year on year!

The new law on the consumer protection has a provision on the mediation. The law now provides for a mechanism of mediation. This is a welcome step but the consumer needs to be cautioned. This paper lay down the stages which need the specific attention of the consumers:


STAGE OF CONSENT: As per S.37. of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 (CPA) the District Commission has the authority to refer the matter to mediation if it considers that there exist elements of a settlement which may be acceptable to the parties. This provision gives an ‘option’ to the consumer which ought to be exercised prudently. This is the stage of the process of reference to mediation. In case there is no settlement, the District Commission shall proceed with the complaint of the consumer. The consumers have ample time to decide whether they should go for the mediation or not. Mediation is a wonderful tool only when entered upon with an open mind. STAGE OF DISCLOSURE BY THE MEDIATOR: The provision of S.77 of the CPA casts a duty upon the mediator to disclose information about himself/ herself regarding disclosing: (a) any personal, professional or financial interest in the outcome of the consumer dispute; (b) the circumstances which may give rise to a justifiable doubt as to his independence or impartiality; and (c) such other facts as may be specified by regulations. Generally, the empaneled mediators are neutral and very professional. The mediators would themselves be exercising discretion at the time of their case assignment. Once mediator takes up the mediation assignment it has to be presumed that he / she would act neutrally. However, this would further necessitate the mediator to file disclosure statement as per S.77 of CCP and the consumer should ask from the mediator for a detailed disclosure so as to

build a high level of trust. The consumers must be satisfied of disclosure statements given by the mediators. Once the consumer assents to the disclosure it will be difficult for the consumer to raise the issue of bias unless something specific surfaces thereafter. At this stage the consumer should not shy from seeking further clarifying from the mediator. STAGE JUST BEFORE THE MEDIATION: This is a crucial stage where the process of process gets down with the hard facts. The consumer needs to be aware of the situation that the opposite party i.e. the respondent is already having the copy of the contents of the complaint filed by the consumer. If not, then the opposite party can always ask for a copy of the complaint. However, the possibility is that the consumer will not be having a copy of the reply of the opposite parties. It is therefore advisable that the consumer gives his consent only after the reply is filed by the opposite side. This choice of the consumer is reflected in S.37. (1) at two phases: the first phase is “at the first hearing of the complaint after its admission”; and the second phase is “at any later stage”. The discretion lies with the forum and this is clear from the words: “if it appears to the District Commission that there exists elements of a settlement which may be acceptable to the parties”. Therefore, the consumer can validly ask the opposite party to file the reply before the stage of consent is reached. This will make the mediation a more balanced process where both the sides are aware of the facts and the defenses thereof. STAGE OF MEDIATION COMMENCES: The S.79(1) CPA provides that the nominated mediator shall have regard to the: • rights and obligations of the parties,


• the usages of trade, if any, • the circumstances giving rise to the consumer dispute and • such other relevant factors, as he may deem necessary and • shall be guided by the principles of natural justice while carrying out mediation. This stage is that of facts and calls for some preparation on part of the consumer inasmuch that the consumer ought to know the usages of the trade and all the circumstances of the case. Assistance can be taken from the ones who deal with consumer cases. Facts ought not to be taken lightly and must not be assumed. The consumer must not forget that the opposite party (the manufacturer or the service provider etc.) would be driving the facts too hard. This is also the stage where the opposite party (the manufacturer or the service provider etc.) would be playing all sorts of defenses (in law) regarding the “product liability”. The process of mediation is not the process of legal proof but it would be certainly based on facts & circumstances as mentioned in S.77 CCA. The experience shows that there would be an endeavor of shifting responsibility back to the consumer. The parties can very well get entangled in the factual matrix of the case without any substantial offers. If this be the case the possibility is that the opposite party is merely wasting time. Typically, a mediation stretched too long yields no result. The consumer must mindful of such a scenario. STAGE WHEN THE MEDIATION NEARS A COMPLETION: This is the time to draw up terms of the settlement. The success of mediation underlines the permanent resolution of the dispute without possibility of any future litigation. Even if there is some dispute outstanding, the same is left to the forum for

adjudication. Either the mediation would be successful or it will be a failure S.80 CPA lays down for both the situations: S.80(1)&(2): if an agreement is reached between the parties with respect to all of the issues involved in the consumer dispute or with respect to only some of the issues, the terms of such agreement shall be reduced to writing accordingly, and signed by the parties to such dispute or their authorized representatives. The mediator shall prepare a settlement report of the settlement and forward the signed agreement along with such report to the concerned Commission. S.80(3): Where no agreement is reached between the parties within the specified time or the mediator is of the opinion that settlement is not possible, he shall prepare his report accordingly and submit the same to the concerned Commission. THE STAGE POST-MEDIATION: The provision of S.80 lays down the process after the mediation : S.81 (1) CPA provides that the forum shall, within seven days of the receipt of the settlement report, pass suitable order recording such settlement of consumer dispute and dispose of the matter accordingly. S.81 (2) CPA provides that where the consumer dispute is settled only in part, the forum shall record settlement of the issues which have been so settled and continue to hear other issues involved in such consumer dispute. S.81 (3) CPA provides that where the consumer dispute could not be settled by mediation, the District Commission or the State Commission or the National Commission, as the case may be, shall continue to


hear all the issues involved in such consumer dispute. The point to be considered is that when the parties are relegated back to the adjudicatory process of naming-blaming-claiming, the consumer in particular doesn’t find himself / herself in the middle of nowhere. The stages of mediation if followed properly will definitely work for the bona fide parties but if the opposite party is not bona fide the consumer needs to preserve its energy for the adjudication.

(al) Drive….A Perspective

India’s gift to the World. As we are aware India started its Vaccination drive towards the last week of January 2021 and started off with the Para medical forces and the frontline workers. These people were from select fields and by last week of Feb 2021, the second booster dose was also administered. However, it is a fact that the entire country was (and still is) agog with the rumours about the after effects of vaccination. At the time this magazine was going to press, it was 5 weeks since the vaccination drive for the Open public equal to and above the age group of 60. While a lot of people who were in this age group have positively embraced this idea there were many more who were repelling from the idea of getting vaccinated like one would recoil from a rattle snake and were spreading unwanted rumours and fears amongst the rest of the country men through the expressly spreading mocial (mobile cum social) media.

As part of this, CustomerAwaaz has established contact with Dr. Smriti Sharma who was the Medical and Nodal Officer officiating in Makhanpur Kanavni Shanti Gopal hospital and also Apollo Clinic in Indirapuram working with Chief Medical Officer Ghaziabad, Dr. N.K. Gupta. CustomerAwaaz team of interviewers has met and interviewed Dr. Smriti Sharma while she was supervising the vaccination drive at Shanti Gopal Hospital and here are excepts from the interview.

CustomerAwaaz Q: The whole country and at least this part of the country too is really grappling with the hearsay that the Covid vaccinations being issued are not safe. Please share with us candidly what has been your experience regarding this? Dr.Smriti Sharma: The vaccinations have started since last 4-5 weeks. Going at the pace of 200 injections per day we have nearly 10000 vaccinations effected from this (Shanti Gopal) hospital and nearly 5000 vaccinations done from Apollo. That is a total of 15,000 cases. And to share with you the records, we have all the 15000 patients vaccinated with the second dose, hale and hearty and have reported no problems. CustomerAwaaz Q: Are you saying that out of 15000 patient base, none of the patients had any problems after getting vaccinated? Dr. SS: First of all they were not patients, they were undergoing an immunization drive. Me included. Please note that we all have had vaccine doses from our childhood and whenever one takes a vaccine, the effects start kicking in. With that people may experience different feeings as per the reactions their bodies give but they are not usually drastic. Whenever the antibodies are forming in the body, there is death of some cells and formation of some new ones. Owing to this, there are bound to be some discomforts for people as in some may have a brief feverish feeling for couple of days some minute body aches etc.

Dr. SS: Yes of course there have been. Some of them have developed some fever and some kind of uneasy sensation for couple of days after the vaccination.

Thus, during this half an hour we actually build comfort within them and as the Medical officer in charge of this operation, I also share my mobile number with them because some of them may experience some slight after effects on the next day for which we prepare them mentally. So these people who get vaccinated are a lot more confident when this is explained and when they have my contact number also with them so that in case they feel uneasy or so they know that they can contact me.

CustomerAwaaz: How did you cater to these kind of cases? Were those who developed not worried or concerned because of this? Dr. SS: We followed a very streamlined process and we also followed the process of pre educating the people who have gotten themselves vaccinated. Firstly the people who come here for the vaccination either registered or are chosen for the various services and they come here as per the appointment. Once they reach here, their names are captured in the register at the Security and Registration Desk. Then as per their turn they are called and vaccinated. Once they are vaccinated, they are guided to a waiting room which is actually an observation centre where social distancing is maintained. They are made to sit and wait here for 30 minutes. This is actually an observation centre and the reason we call so is because we keep those vaccinated under strict observation here. I as the Medical Officer and in charge of operations constantly meet these people and ask them for any signs of abnormality or discomfort. In case of any of those vaccinated come up with any issues we take care of them accordingly. But even before that I and my team keep talking to them explaining that the vaccination is ok and that there may be some small and mild symptoms of

So while there may be some uneasiness or in cases body aches etc, these are natural changes that can occur and preparing the people for this will reduce the levels of anxiety or a possible panic. And to finally close this, we have data of over a month of 15,000 patients who have been vaccinated over 5 weeks and just about 6 of them would have reported some fever. Now that you are here you may meet some of those vaccinated in the observation room and speak to them yourselves.

Nutritional Disorders – Deficiency of vitamins and minerals are not only reflected by the soft oral mucosa but also by the teeth. Let us look at changes caused due to each vitamin deficiency. In other conditions there can be abnormal bleeding and even burning mouth. Generalised ulcers especially on palate that do not heal and undergo necrosis (death of tissue). In some blood disorders jaw bones may enlarged and get deformed too. In some cases the tongue papilla grow giving the appearance of a hairy tongue. Cancer- Multiple un-healing oral ulcers or mouth sores. Abnormal mouth swellings. White or red patches in the mouth that cannot be brushed or scrapped away. Non-specific pain in mouth, fungal infection, inflamed and burning mouth, difficulty swallowing and foul odour can also be found. Foul odour, multiple non-healing ulcerations, bad taste in mouth and inflamed oral mucosa and crusted and painful tongue are seen in disorders and diseases related to stomach, intestines and digestion as well as in Kidney disease. Foul odour and taste is

also typical in chronic or long term Lung diseases and may be accompanied by recurring infections of throat. In viral diseases again there can be non-healing ulcers with or without inflammation of oral mucosa. AIDS shows typical hairy black discoloured tongue and red and white patches on mucosa. In COVID 19 also there are ulcers, inflammation and loss of taste. Fungal infections can be seen in long term cases. Almost all Skin diseases show their initial or first signs in the mouth. These include changes in colour and texture of mucosa covering the entire mouth and also surface of the tongue. The lesions may disappear and reappear in different places. These are seen as inflamed mouth or stomatitis, inflamed and or fissured tongue. There can be painful red and silvery white plaques seen that seem to disappear in time and reappear. Mouth ulcers, bullae, denuded inflamed painful tongue, overgrown blood red gingiva may also be seen. The mouth speaks volumes of what is happening inside our body. At a time when entire world was struggling with the low production and manufacturing in the wake of pandemic, India came up with a scheme which would not only increase production but also incentivise the producers. Yes, we are talking PLI. Though in banking parlance, PLI is known as Performance Linked Incentive. But, here we are discussing Production Linked Incentive, a highly ambitious scheme launched by Government of India. The idea of the scheme is to boost domestic manufacturing and attract large investments and thereby establish India as a manufacturing landscape at the global level. Embedded within Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, the scheme is the guiding beacon for enhancing India's manufacturing capabilities and enhancing exports. No doubt, it has played a significant role in arousing interest in domestic as well as foreign players. The most important feature of this scheme is that it is outcome-based, means incentive will be given only after production takes place, and therefore, result-oriented. Secondly, incentives will be calculated based on incremental production to be achieved at a sustainable higher growth-rate. Under this scheme, manufacturing companies will get an incentive of 4 to 6% on incremental sales (over base year) for a period of next 5 years. Base year for the scheme is 2019-20 and the incentives are applicable from 1 August. The scheme is expected to garner additional investment of as much as ₹11,000 crore and create 3,00,000 direct jobs. To start with, sectors which could avail the benefit initially were Mobile Manufacturing and Speci-


fied Electronic Components, Critical Key Starting Materials/Drug Intermediaries and Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, and Manufacturing of Medical Devices. The government had allocated ₹51,311 crore for these sectors. In November-2020, the government approved the extension of PLI scheme in 10 following key sectors: 1. Advance Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery 2. Electronic/Technology Products 3. Automobiles & Auto Components 4. Pharmaceuticals Drugs 5. Telecom & Networking Products 6. Textile Products 7. Food Products 8. High Efficiency Solar PV Modules 9. White Goods (ACs & LED) 10. Speciality Steel Some sunrise sectors like solar photo-voltaic panels are also included in this list of 10 sectors that are part of the PLI scheme. The financial outlay for the scheme will be ₹1,45,980 crore. Though impact of PLI scheme can be seen across board. However, it has been a huge success in terms of the applications received from global as well as domestic mobile phone manufacturing companies and electronic components manufacturers. Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron (Contract manufacturers for Apple iPhones), Samsung and Rising Star are some international mobile phone manufacturing companies which have been approved under the mobile phone (invoice value ₹15,000 and above) segment. Similarly, as many as 130 pharma companies have submitted expressions of interest to the government for promoting domestic manufacturing of drugs, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and medical devices.

In telecom sector also, the scheme targets to support the manufacturing of 4G, 5G, and wireless equipment. We are partnering with developed nations such as the UK, Japan and other countries in the field of telecommunication to prevent Chinese telecom companies from building 5G infrastructure. Enthused by response of industry with regard to the PLI scheme, some more sectors may be brought under this scheme. The scheme, featured in the recently tabled Economic Survey in the Parliament on 29th Jan, 2021, boasts of establishing backward linkages with the zMSME sector in the country, which, in turn, will lead to more inclusive growth and create huge employment opportunities. This scheme can help increase the manufacturing sector’s share in the Indian GDP from the current level of 16% to much higher levels in the next five years. If taken off as planned, this scheme may add around USD 520 billion to the GDP in the next five years. Moreover, the scheme will boost exports, thus narrowing the trade deficit by USD 55 billion. While the PLI scheme aims to help the industries that have been crippled by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the measures are manifested at reducing the dependence on Chinese imports, making India self-reliant in true sense. To conclude, I would like to add statement of our Finance Minister in the parliament during Budget speech: "For a $5 trillion economy, our manufacturing sector has to grow in double digits on a sustained basis. Our manufacturing companies need to become an integral part of global supply chains, possess core competence and cutting-edge technology."

Since this is my first edition with Junior Awaz, I am enthralled and nervous at the same time. With an ocean of excitement, let me introduce you all to the theme- “Discerning the depths of Young minds”. We will talk about issues of appearance, images of depression and try to find ways to smile on our journey towards a better tomorrow. In accordance to theme, it is the depths of my mind that you get to discern first. “Probably all my dear readers are aware of the butterfly paradox, an epistemological skepticism that highlights the solid uncertainty of our bizarre lives. The ancient Chinese philosopher Chuang Tzu once dreamed of being a butterfly fluttering from flower to flower, blown about by the breeze. When he woke up a question followed-“Was I dreaming I am a butterfly or am I now really a butterfly dreaming of being myself?” That very question explains our thoughts about identity crisis. We plunge ourselves into something and suddenly we lose the purpose. Why do we do what we do? Who am I? Who are you? These questions can be difficult enough to exhaust the wholesome resources of philosophical sciences and still remain unanswered. While on the other hand, even a child can surprise us with acceptable solutions. Personally, I still don’t know who I am but I am well acquainted with my purpose and to me, that’s close enough. Now, it’s not up to me to tell you yours or anyone else’ for that matter, only individualistic introspection can quench your thirst in the quest of identity. What is that one code you choose to live by: that shall be severed only when blood stops finding its way into your heart. What is that one idea that liberates you when even your conscience is incessantly bound and clenched like the roots of a giant tree hold the soil which wishes nothing more than being blown away in the impoverished landscapes or washed away by the sacredness of crystal water? The day I believe we shall cease to believe in giving one’s choices away, is the day we choose reality over deception. That day we'll know who we are, truly and with a sense of finality. I have heard many desiring the life of a butterfly but none of a caterpillar. The gaudy glamour blinds us to the stench of struggle beneath and this is nothing but our naïve selves foolishly mocking the process of evolution and the necessity for it. What makes each of us different and yet so similar is in the beauty of the way colors bleed into each other that makes a painting yet seen distinctively. Maybe how each of us hold hands with one another and manage to stab the other in the back that makes us feel distant yet connected. I found my love in writing, a salacious asylum in what it does to me; a tool of survival, I might even say. It’s the exquisite liberation of writing that gives the choice to the reader's closet, to enter the words and walk on deserted paths, to enter the mind of afflicted, or an inflictor, or maybe just a spectator. Margo from paper towns said that when all our strings break, we die. So in the end, I just want all of us to know that in this crazy rat race, getting a job or marrying someone is not important but finding the chords that tie us to the earth. Wanting to live is more important than the act of living itself. With you all, I have found the reason to open my eyes in the morning, Now you must find yours”

A long while ago, the early humans shed their leafy vestiges for something more unique-animal skins that contoured along their body curves

highlighting the male/female physique came into play and that, very likely

was the start of opposite sexes engaging in appreciation of beauty of the human body.

The society today has progressed far and beyond from the period I

mentioned and so have the traditional beauty standards, with each time

period having their ideal definition of what a handsome man and a beautiful woman should entail.

Moving on to our current generation, India has rapidly shed its shell in terms of body positivity and due to a major Eurocentric and western

influence, the beauty standards have largely been affected in favor of more European features, being deemed as the new ideal. This isn’t surprising in

the least, owing up to our colonized past and the rapid leaps in technology, leading to a huge boom in the entertainment industry and media exchange

among the nations round the world. The group most affected from this new change is the teen and young adult population of our nation, being the

subject to most of the new technological and entertainment advances.


Naturally this lead to a new perception of the ideal beauty standards that most of

the Indian population isn’t genetically capable of, among which the perfect example is the fairness of the skin. Due to being located in an equatorial region, our population naturally has more disposition in regards to larger amounts of melanin in our skin (owing to our darker skin tone), but this isn’t considered to be a good trait but rather chalked up to a non-ideal trait. This is very evident from the plethora of

fairness products and chemical procedures widely popular here, we’ve all heard of fair and lovely Haven’t we?

The new standards aren’t just limited to a fairer skin tone but also the new ideal

body type as well. For males having an athletic build is the new go to, while females

are expected to have perfect hour glass bodies. This huge shift has lunged the youth into gyms and other similar exercise regimes, which isn’t inherently a bad thing but when done in excess in order to achieve that perfect look without professional

guidance (unlike their ideal celebs), seldom yield satisfactory results. This leads to a downward spiral which might start evolving into body dysmorphia, a concerning

mental illness with dangerous impact to one’s health. There are other diseases like

anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and according to a study, 10 per 100,000 in Indian males and 37.2 per 100,000 in Indian females suffer from these.

According to a global survey by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ISAPS), India ranks fourth with 9,35,487 cosmetic procedures

conducted in the last year. The surgeries account for 4.3% of all procedures recorded globally.

So how did this happen? It’s in large part due to our own entertainment industry: Bollywood. The entertainment and film industry has always promoted unrealistic body standards for an average Joe with a regular life, be it the lack of personal trainers, strict diets, or the lack of time due to job/college/school.

Under this section we have tried to capture those tidbits of news, and which can create an impact. Woman Sues restaurateur for wrong delivery seeks Rs 1 Cr Compensation

A woman hailing from Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad has filed a complaint of customer negligence and insensitivity with the consumer court alleging that a pizza restaurant chain’s outlet delivered her a non-vegetarian pizza causing her ‘mental agony’ and has demanded compensation of Rs 1 crore from the restaurant chain. UP resident Deepali Tyagi, who is a pure-vegetarian has said in her petition that the action has spoiled her religious practices and has since demanded damages for it.

In her petition, the woman also said that she is a pure vegetarian due to her ‘religious beliefs, teachings, family traditions, own conscience, and her best choice.’ The district manager of the pizza outlet had apparently attempted to assuage the offended feelings of the complainant’s family by offering free pizzas. The complainant however, refused the offer as she believed it was not a matter that could be solved with petty bribery because she experienced extreme mental agony and her whole family would have to undergo “several long and expensive procedures” throughout their entire lives. While the manager did make some efforts to recompense for the mistake, it comes off as an offhanded attempt at that. Another incidence which shot up into public limelight was an incident where Hitesha Chandranee, a content creator, shared her experience with the online food delivery app; Zomato, via multiple videos. A very scared and bruised Hitesha went on to describe the incident, wherein she says that the delivery was

delayed and when she decided to take it up with the customer care executive, the delivery man hit her and ran away. Two days after this, another video hit the internet, but now, with Mr. Kamraj’s (the delivery man)

In the video, he explains how it was the woman who started verbally abusing him for being late and then began hitting him with a slipper when she accidentally slipped and hurt herself. What has caught our attention though, is the involvement of the Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal saying "Right from the get go, our topmost priority has been to get to the truth.” He stated that the company would support both sides till the probe is complete, covering for Hitsha’s medical and Kamraj’s legal expenses. Kamraj’s interim earnings are also being covered as he has been suspended, as per protocol. The stakes are high for both the parties meaning that both sides make for believable stories. Many people are waiting and watching closely how this probe will bring to light.

New (financial) Year, Happy or in a Pinch?

With the New Year thrill now over, the corporate sector and its employees will now be looking forward to the New (financial) Year, and rightly so as the government has announced some changes in the existing rules which will take effect from 1st April 2, 2021. Following are some important ones which the consumers have to be aware about:

•The EPF investments of 2.5 lakhs and above will now fall under the scope of income tax, i.e. they will be taxable. In cases where the employer is not a contributor to the PF, the limit has been increased to 5 lakh. •In accordance with a provision made in the budget, the government will charge TDS from those not filing the ITR, and the TDS may double on bank deposits on failure of filing of ITR. •Senior citizens above 75 years of age will be exempted from filing ITR given that they fulfill certain conditions. This service can be availed by only those senior citizens who don’t have any other income source except pension and interest income. Along with these changes the government has made it mandatory to link one’s PAN with their Aadhar, and the last date for doing so is 31 March otherwise people will not be able to carry out transactions where PAN is required. CANARA BANK LIMITED TARGET: 192 Global business of the bank rose at improved pace of 7% yoy at Rs 1640582 crore at end December 2020. Deposits grew 8% yoy to Rs 1573151 crore, while the advances growth also moved up 6% at Rs 667561 crore at end December 2020. The credit-deposit ratio of the bank rose to 68.6% from 68.4% a quarter ago and remained lower from 69.9% a year


ago. NII increased 14.58% yoy to Rs 6081 crore in Q3FY2021. The bank has reported 3% decline in the interest earned at Rs 17206.34 crore, while interest expenses declined 10% to Rs 11125.46 crore. Domestic advances of the bank increased 8% to Rs 644826 crore, domestic deposits moved up 9% to Rs 928325 crore at end December 2020. The bank has exhibited strong growth in retail advances at 9% to Rs 113835 crore, while MSME credit jumped 6% to Rs 113718 crore and agriculture loans improved 11% to Rs 150652 crore. The bank has also shown growth in corporate advance at 2% to Rs 289356 crore end December 2020. The bank has improved asset quality with decline in fresh slippages of loans. Gross non-performing assets (NPAs) stood at Rs 49,788.61 crore as on 31 December 2020 as against Rs 53,437.92 crore as on 30 September 2020 and Rs 36,644.97 crore as on 31 December 2019. Gross non-performing assets (NPA) ratio came down to 7.46%, compared to 8.23% in the previous quarter. Similarly, net NPA ratio came down to 2.64% from 3.42% in the previous quarter. The provision coverage ratio improved in the December quarter to 84.90%, compared to 70.97% in the year-ago period. CRAR stood at 13.69% as at Sep 2020. The bank has recorded net profit of Rs 696 crore for the merged entity of Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank for the quarter ended December 2020, showing 9% decline from comparable figure of Rs 764 crore for merged entity in Q3FY2020. The merged entity has posted strong 15% growth in the net interest income, while non-interest income has surged 63%. The management has guided for focus on

NPA management with strategic actions on strengthening credit monitoring, contain fresh slippages and strengthen recovery efforts. The bank remains cautiously optimistic in terms of the asset quality outlook going ahead in the current year.

NTPC LIMITED TARGET: 125 NTPC is a Maharatna company operating in the power generation business. The principal business activity of the firm is electric power generation through coal based thermal power plants. It also engages in the business of generation of electricity from hydro and renewable energy sources. As of 31 December 2020, the Government of India held 51.10% stake held in NTPC. The gross generation of NTPC in Q3 FY21 was 65.42 Billion units as against 61.21 Billion units during the corresponding period of previous year registering an increase of 6.87%. For 9M FY21 gross generation was 193.28 Billion units as against 191.35 Billion units during the corresponding period of previous year. During Q3FY21, the company's Plant Load Factor (PLF) or capacity utilisation of coal-based projects was 64.31 per cent in the quarter under review as compared to 63.48 per cent in the same period a year ago. The company has added 2800 mw of capacity and it is confident of adding 5074 mw of new capacity by the end of current fiscal and another about 6000 mw of capacity in the next fiscal. The company has increased the dividend pay outs and recently concluded a buyback, a strong signal to its shareholders that the


company will use opportunity to deploy cash intelligently. NTPC has continued to reported strong operational numbers in Q3FY21 on the back of power demand recovery. On a consolidated basis, NTPC's net profit rose nearly 16%to Rs.3,876.36 crore for the December quarter, mainly due to higher revenues. Its consolidated net profit was at Rs.3,351.28 crore in the quarter ended on December 31, 2019. The management of the company has provided robust guidance for growth in regulated equity, which makes optimistic about strong earnings growth for NTPC in the next couple of years. The management believes receivables of Rs. 16,720 crore currently from discoms should reduce with liquidity infusion into discoms under the power sector relief package. The decline in receivables from discoms would strengthen its balance sheet.
