Pink City Corp Explained

The History of

Toyl Events started in 1999 as a small event planning service based in Ann Arbor, MI. The service quickly grew and was later renamed Pink City Entertainment and is now officially known as Pink City Corporation. Since the company moved to Atlanta in 2006, we have been providing women of all ages and all sizes around the nation and world with avenues and events to unite, entertain, empower and educate them. Pink City Corp is most known for

starting the Project Curve Appeal Movement, the Pink City Sisterhood and producing hot events such as the national women's conference known as the Sisterhood Conference along with the Girls Night out event series called the Bachelorette Expo, Fashion Shows, Mega Photo Shoots called Glam Day, Model Development Events called the Model Me Experience and in-house training events known as Face Camp and the Leaders Summit.

Project Curve Appeal is the brain child to Pink City (formally Toyl Events). The original concept of Project Curve Appeal was born in the spring of 2008 when Pink City hosted a unique event in Atlanta, a fullfigured fashion show and expo called the Curve Appeal Beauty & Fashion Show on November 29, 2008 and then the Curve Appeal Beauty & Fashion Convention on May 9, 2009 that attracted 547 guest. During the planning of the first PCA event, Pink City encountered several issues when initially seeking support and recognition from the media, the industry, other similar organizations and retailers. We felt it was time to change the perception that all plus size women and groups that promote their empowerment, follow the same “big girl stigma that several groups are known for. We also wanted to be that company to start a real movement that would reach and unite confident women all over the world. The official Mission of the Movement is to: Correct the distorted perception of curvier women around the world, while empowering and educating them to celebrate their beauty, embrace and enhance their curves but also to live a healthy lifestyle. For a full year (2008), Pink City Corp continued to promote Project Curve Appeal and cater to women sizes 1226 in the Atlanta area only. We quickly learned that we not only had supporters all over the world that were ready to join our cause, but we even had smaller women that wanted

Sweaters Dresses Jazz up a simple sweater that can be dressed either up or down. Pair a cut out sweater with a cami for a trendy winter look. Thick and chunky sweaters are also perfect for the winter weather. Sweaters are so versatile and can be worn paired with tights and tall over-the-knee boots. They can also be paired with skinny jeans, jeggings or leggings with a perfect belt to accentuate your curves. If you are afraid of just trying the sweater dress by itself it can also be worn with a blazer or cardigan.

Animal Print is definitely in right now no matter what the season may be. I’m sure many of us love some type of animal print whether it be leopard, cheetah, zebra, etc. Animal print was hot for the summer and it does not appear that this trend is going anywhere no time soon. Now going into winter this print will still work just fine with either your winter or winter wardrobe. Animal print can be worn in many different ways, whether it be a handbag, scarf, shoes, handbag, clothing or accessories.

Arm Party

a very popular fashion trend which in-

cludes layering upon layers of bracelets and watches. This is another trend that is definitely here to stay and will not be going anywhere no time soon. One thing for sure is fashion is repeating itself because this is a trend that was somewhat popular in the 90‘s that has changed a little, but overall has the same idea. This trend is very fashion forward and it can be personalized according to you and your own personal style. It is easy to mix-match your own goods to showcase your own personal flair. There is not really a right or wrong way to mix and match bracelet layering because it is just self expression. I’m sure we are all guilty of loving accessories and with the arm party it’s ok to mix both high and low end pieces to achieve the look you are going for.

Polka Dots

is one other vintage trend that has never

really went away and a trend that many of us love, a real trend, with a capital T that is. It does not have to be a head to toe patterned look, but maybe trying a scarf, top or blouse to play it safe and be playful and trendy at the same time. Polka dots are definitely something to look for this winter. The thing about polka dots is that they manage to make a dress look chic without it looking too busy.

Chunky Choker Necklaces If you feel comfortable wearing oversized accessories this is a trend that you will definitely love. It does not matter if the necklace is bulky and bright or just simply fierce. Chunky choker necklaces should make a statement. The choker necklace adds a bit of spice to your look, and works great with just about anything. This is an easy piece because it adds some pizazz to the wardrobe essentials you already own, looks great with everything from a casual blazer to that sexy little cocktail dress, and some are very reasonably priced. This allpurpose accessory is at must have for your winter wardrobe.

Funny, cool, humble, nerdy, and loyal, England Simpson is truly an “Around the Way Girl”. Southern to her core, she grew up in North Carolina as one of four “curvy” girls to a single mom. Truly driven to pursue her passions in film and television, she has pushed passed the naysayers of Hollywood. Ms. “Curvy” girl-England Simpson, has now reached the households of millions via the hit reality show “Southern Fried Stings” on truTV. She sits down with Curve Appeal Culture to give a glimpse behind the scenes of her life.

to decide they want to be a mass communication major. What even tipped you off to decide that’s the route I want to go in life? I knew from the beginning that I wanted to be involved in TV, film, radio, or music in some way, shape, or form. But I thought that people that looked like me, that was my size, or had my skin tone, didn’t have much success getting in front of the camera. So I figure if I’m going to go to school, let me go for broadcasting.

For those who do not know you, who is England Simpson?

When I was younger, I was always told I was really good at writing and telling a good story. So I assumed that meant I had to be a writer, or I had to be a producer. I didn’t necEngland Simpson is a mess, a hot mess! No, I’m just kid- essarily think a little fat black chick with nappy hair and ding! I’m an actress, independent filmmaker, and a dreams could actually be an actress. woman that is passionate about everything she does in life.

Being an actress on National television, where did it all start? Actually I went to college to gain a degree in mass media communication. While in college producing for television and news casts, I decided to take a stab at acting. So at 19 years old, (I’m 27 now), I decided to try to step out in front of the camera. It really was just something I would try, to see if I liked it. I realized I never explored the option before because my look and size was not common for film and television.

Funny, cool, humble, nerdy, and loyal, England Simpson is truly an “Around the Way Girl”.

Back then, I was doing a lot to try to get work for my older sister who has a theater background. One day she messed up and didn’t go to an audition, so I decided to go myself and see what happens. Lo and behold, that was my first gig.

Let’s backup a bit, because it’s not common for people Curve Appeal Culture | Winter Issue 2011/12 | Part 1|

It took that long to realize I didn’t want to be a writer, I don’t care what TV show or movie I’ve been on, I got to actually wanted to be in front of the camera! When I look keep it real with them. I’m blessed to have the friends and back to when I was 9 and 10 years old winning national family that I have. writing awards, I realized that it wasn’t necessarily for the Tell us about your sisters, I hear you are enwriting, but the dramatics and pageantry of it all. So it took me growing up and becoming more comfortable with deavoring to bring your sisters into the telemy look, my size, and just me as a person, to finally step vision action. family?

So it’s not often that we do see women with our size, shape, and color on National television (Especially with that combination). Did you face any kind of discrimination along the way?

My sisters and I have just shot a pilot for a reality show. When people constantly saw me on television, they would go online and try to learn more about me. They would find a local television program my best friend and I created online, that showcased my family. From there, the fans saw my sisters and saw how incredibly beautiful they were, and how much funnier they are than I am. So the Ooh Girl! ABSOLUTELY! Speak of the Devil! I just dealt with that earlier this week! I deal with that all the time! If fans fell in love with my family! We had garnered a lot of my momma wasn’t who she was, and raised me to be the attention from the Youtube videos, so several producers type of woman I am. I would have given up so many times reached out to us to produce the reality show. over! I’ve had people flat out tell me to my face if I wasn’t fat, I would have gotten the part! It’s very brutal! You have to have a tough skin to deal with this industry. So many times I’ve heard “I’m sorry, but we don’t like the fact that you are a plus size girl”. So if you don’t have a support system like the family I have, (The strong black influential Momma, I have) it could break you! Even now that people recognize me from television and films, I still get the discrimination. So I just ignore it!

Has your notoriety affected your interaction with family and friends? Have you changed, or has everyone else changed? NO, nobody has changed! NO changed has happened! I can’t change! Like I mention, with my family being the way they are, they won’t even allow that. They don’t like snobby people around them. So if I want to be around my family, I have to keep it 100%! I have to keep it real because my sisters will put me in check in a hot minute! I still live in the same place I’ve lived my entire life. I keep myself humble and don’t live up to the hype around me. I’ve kept the same friends since I was 13 years old. They 22 | Curve Appeal Culture | Winter Issue 2011/12 | Part

What’s the premise behind your reality show? To keep it real, some of the stuff you see on TV is completely fabricated in order to produce drama for the show. But my sisters and I have decided to take stuff that is really happening in our lives and let the public know about it. We want to be relatable. That’s the best way I can explain it. We are not trying to make up situations or drama between us; we are just shooting real TV. Besides, we have enough going on that we don’t need to make anything up.

Do you plan to allow your personal life to be taped? For example if you are dating while taping the show, will you allow the cameras to keep rolling? Dating? Well first if I am dating, then I would keep that in the show because it’s part of my life. I want to be as real as possible with the show. But most people that know me understand that I’m sort of anti-dating right now because I’m a virgin. I feel like with dating comes the added pressure to be physical with someone that I’m just not ready to do. So I would rather stay single and free! I like the freedom of being single right now.

So he’s dating the whole family? Girl yes, the whole family! The whole Simpson’s Clan. My momma included! He will go take my momma to lunch without India.

Speaking of relationships and dating, do you and your sisters have the type of relationship See some guys didn’t make the rank. I may have liked that if you all were dating someone, you them a lot, but they didn’t get along with my sisters, so would allow the other sisters to give advice they get the boot! We are a very tight knit family. and step into your personal life? Did the dating scene change once you became more popular? Did you have people Oh Yeah! OH Yeah! All men have to get approval from us first, before they could even talk to any of my sisters. Be- stalking, or are you low-key? fore you can call my sister “your Boo”, you got to get through us first! In fact my younger sister India always says that her boyfriend likes us more than her! We are always hanging with him. He likes to watch scary movies and my sister doesn’t like them. So we go to the movies with him!

I try to keep it low key, but there are some who are a little on the stalker side. I’m not interested in dating. I’ve only had 3 boyfriends my entire life. I’m usually the “best friend” girl! I rather kick it with guys playing video games. Plus since we never get into the physical part of dating, I end up being more like their home-girl instead. What are your hopes for the future? I’ve got to be honest; I’m focused on everything that is happening with my sisters. The “Simpson Sisters” brand and our television show. I want to take the knowledge I learned from school and produce the show myself. My sisters are so much more talented than I am, and I really want them to get the exposure they deserve. So that’s my immediate main goal. As far as my future career is concerned, I LOVE making films! I love acting even more than doing the reality television. I really want to focus on making indie films and being the next great film director like how Tyler Perry started, and Lee Daniels the guy that made “Precious”. I want to tell compelling stories that people would want to hear and receive.

to live up to the standards of Hollywood. So don’t try to do that! You got to do you! If you are talented and driven, don’t let anything discourage you! There are times when you just want to cry. When you hear stuff like “Wow you are the most talented person who has auditioned for this part, but you’re FAT.” Just knowing that talent is not reigning supreme can be very discouraging. If you don’t have a thick skin for it, it can really break you down. It can break your personality and you feel like you’ve been robbed of your “Diva” status. You are a Diva! So keep pushing forward! There are going to be so many “NO’s”, but 1 yes is all that matters.

Second, don’t expect anyone to bring the opportunity to you! You got to be about your own business. So many people are becoming successful virally, doing their own thing. Even in music, you have so many artists like 50Cent who pushed their own mix-tapes and then BOOM! They What advice would you give to those that blowup and now are a great success! So don’t wait for anyone to give you that opportunity. You have to chase are aspiring models, actresses, or pursuing that dream yourself! You have to be proactive with it! their passions for the entertainment indus- Focus on trying to get your brand out there. Try to make it happen for you. Don’t be stagnate and waiting on anyone try? else. Game recognizes Game! Forgiveness is defined in the Webster Dictionary as: to give up resentment of or claim to requital; to cease or to feel resentment against an offender. There are many times we may be offended by a person’s words or actions towards us and instead of directly speaking to the offender, we keep it inside, gossip to others, or maybe even retreat because we have been hurt so badly. Holding on to hurt from disagreements, words taken out of context or generational curse’s can eventually take control of how you operate in your daily interactions with others and completely eat at the core of your soul. If there is someone in your life whether it be a co-worker, friend, or family member that you feel has hurt you, go to them and talk the situation out instead of waiting and that hurt turns into a cancer in your soul. At any time God can call any of us home and we will have never made amends with the other person. When we pray and then address issues that affect our lives and completely RELEASE the hurt, then God can step in and work the situation out for both parties. After the release, is when you see the positive manifestation begin in your life!! Release the hurt. Release the fear. Refuse to entertain the old pain. The hurt that you may be holding on to may just be what’s holding you back from what’s ahead of you. Stay Lifted!! Nicole R. White Level 5 Liaison – Austin, Texas

Professional Hairstylist Christi Byrd has been in the beauty industry for over 20 years and after spending every Saturday in the local Beauty Salons (as a young girl) she knew that this was the perfect occupation for her. She was fascinated by the way the hairdressers were able to manipulate and literally changed the texture of hair by simply using thermal heat. Since then, Christi has been on personal quest to install the most natural looking weaves which she customizes to complement each and every woman that sits in her chair. On that note…read on as Christi takes a moment explain how to achieve that Home Grown Look.

By Linda Johnson This is one of four segments on how to get that flawless makeup application. T It starts with skin care. This step is most important as a clean and healthy canvas is the key to a flawless face. The next segment features the importance of the right type of foundation and why it is important to wear it. The third segment features color contrast and what colors best fit your natural hues; from the color of your eyes to that hot, sexy blouse you want to wear on your date. Finally, we discuss product pricing. Remember, when reading each piece the ultimate goal is to have fun with each step and learn something new and exciting. Ok, hang on to your seat and open your mind for Linda Nicole’s tips, tricks and trades of today’s skincare and makeup application. These may not be your grandmother’s remedies, but ones that will enhance your complexion and go easy on that new Prada clutch at the check-out counter.

First, we have to remember that in order to obtain, and maintain that natural glow you have to take care of your skin. The “I only wash with soap and water”, or “I don’t like to wear foundation” excuse is no longer acceptable. (Besides soap usually dries out your skin.) (TIP): The key is to protect your skin from all the free radicals floating in Mother Nature’s beautiful air. These free radicals are the reason why estheticians and makeup artist recommend some important steps in your daily and nightly regimen. One example is cleansing your face (don’t forget your neck) which not only removes your foundation, but all of the dirt, oil and junk that attaches itself throughout the day. Although the air feels good on a nice breezy day, mold, ragweed, and sweat are attacking your skin, which may cause an allergic reaction , irritation or make your face just plain dirty. Ladies, it is so important for us to spend as much time taking care of our skin as we do picking out that sexy Little Black Dress, the perfect accessories to match or those HOT stilettos that we had to have. Keep in mind, our face is the first thing people see when they meet us and the last thing they remember when placing a name with a FACE. Make a lasting first impression. Without clean, clear skin, the foundation will have some flaws that will show through. Many of you skip this step in hopes the foundation will cover up the flaws and imperfections. This will not work and if it does it is just a temporary fix. Get in the habit of cleaning your skin day and night. Mommy always told us to brush our teeth every morning and night. Well, washing your face is no different. Curve Appeal Culture | Winter Issue 2011/12 | Part 1|

So, let’s get started with some quick and easy tips to get our skin back to feeling and looking good. Since our foundation will not look as flawless as we would like unless our skin is healthy, let’s start by finding a skin care system that works best for us. As women of color we have some tricky skin issues, that prevent us from buying just one product. Because we are faced with adult acne, discoloration, dermatitis, eczema and other skin related problems, we should look at each problem area individually. (TIP): Do a little research before heading to the store to find a product or two that will work best to suite your needs. Clearasil & Neutrogena have customized skin care guides that allow you to answer a few questions to determine which skin care product is right for you Mary Kay offers a great skin care system, because there is something for every age group;. It is gentle on the skin and works with skin types that are oily, dry, combination, acne prone, or for those that want to slow down the aging process. For your problem areas that may need something stronger, consider a consultation from a dermatologist. An over-the- counter product may not do the trick.

Four Simple Steps to Maintain a Healthy Canvas. 1. Clean your face morning and night 2. Tone, to remove excess dirt, and help even skin tone 3. Tackle any problem areas such as dry 40 | Curve Appeal Culture | Summer Issue | June/July 2011

skin, discoloration, or acne

4. Moisturize with SPF 15 or higher, Remember a little goes a long way; hydrate your skin not saturate it. If you feel you are too oily for moisturizer try using a oil control lotion. Many people have problems with blackheads and discoloration. How to correct this has been challenging. (TIP): First, attack the blackheads with acne cream. Mary Kay acne gel or Neutrogena on-the-spot acne cream should do the trick. To save on cost the store brand version works just as well as other brand name products. (TIP): Then, to tackle the discoloration, I use pure Shea Butter in the morning before applying my foundation and then at night after washing my face. Keep in mind your summer time skin regimen may be different than the winter time as your skin may dry out more from the cold. Depending on what part of the world you live in, you will need to be aware of how your skin reacts in different seasons. Do you have a skin care system that works for you? Please share! Keep in mind what works for someone else may not work for you and vice versa, so once you find something that works , stick with it. If another skin issue arises then you may want to reevaluate your system.
