Most modern heavy-duty trucks use a 9 or 11-blade cooling fan that draws up to 60 hp. Did you also know that every time your cooling fan engages, you are burning an extra 10% or more in fuel, which can add up to thousands of dollars every year that you could save?

All modern engines operate at higher peak combustion temperatures to give you the best fuel efficiency. But this also means your cooling system is working harder than ever, especially in our hot climate, and needs to be maintained more regularly to ensure best engine efficiency and reliability.

In addition to keeping the engine at the right operating temperature, your truck’s cooling system also cools the engine lubricating oil, the transmission oil (or torque converter) and any other accessory that uses engine coolant for heat exchange.

Problems arising from a poorly functioning cooling system include premature engine wear, overheating, pitting, cavitation-erosion, cracked cylinder heads, piston seizures and plugged radiators. Not to mention the loss of fuel efficiency due to excessive cooling fan operation. ■

COOLANT TESTING Every good cooling system maintenance program should include regular coolant testing to determine if the proper level of protection is present or if contaminants exist. A good coolant testing program eliminates guesswork and allows the cooling system to maintain peak performance.

DEF (ADBLUE™) AND FUEL TANK VENT LINE FILTER KIT Cummins has recently introduced a DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) and fuel tank vent filter kit, part number DW112 for trucks that operate in dusty and off-road environments. This kit will assist with tank contamination and system failures due to contamination on Cummins engines ISBe5, ISLe5, ISMe5, ISXe5 and ISX EGR.

Filter : FF42003 The tank vent filter kit consists of a filter, clamp, bolts, nuts and three metres of hose to connect the tank vent to the filter, suitable for both DEF and fuel. One filter must be used per tank. An example being a vehicle with two fuel tanks and one DEF tank will require three tank vent filter kits.
