W elcome to the January/February issue of Through Centenary Windows.

For this issue we are discussing "Happiness" and how it can have numerous definitions.

We landed on this theme based upon our winter sermon series, which begins on January 18. Be sure to read Rev. Willis Greene's article on the next page as she introduces the series.

For this issue, we asked folks to share with us how they might define happiness and those responses are included from Debbie Burns, Lois Davis

and Peggy Klinger. You will enjoy their stories and images.

Rev. Kate May shares with us her list of happiness, and believe it or not, the list started when she first began her journey here at Centenary. She also asks us to consider what we might enjoy doing and participating in.

In her article she shares about the journey the confirmands and their shepherds take during this important time in their discovery to Believe. You will also have the chance to see what the confirmation journal looks like and how much the participants cover and learn.

Lasting Joy A new year always

arrives with a sense of possibility. Something about turning the calendar page invites us to imagine a fresh start—new habits, new priorities, new hope. As we enter 2026, many of us share a simple desire: we want to be happy. But what exactly do we mean when we say we want to be happy? And once we understand it, how do we get there?

We often assume happiness comes from external circumstances—such as affluence, accomplishments or appearance. Yet over time, we learn that the highs of accomplishment, and the thrill of acquiring more, never quite deliver the contentment we hope for. We know—at least intellectually— that contentment doesn’t come from the outside. In some ways it almost sounds like a cliché. And yet, even with this knowledge, many of us still feel a quiet restlessness, a lingering discontent that follows us into each new year. So, what do we do with that unrest? How do we move toward the deeper, steadier happiness we long for?

In his book, Searching for Happiness, pastor and author, Martin Thielen, suggests that there are ten attitudes and behaviors that consistently lead to contentment. Beginning in mid-January, we will launch a sermon series exploring several of these practices—each rooted deeply in scripture and affirmed by both spiritual wisdom and modern research.

According to Thielen, contented people: 1. Know that external circumstances do not determine happiness (Ecclesiastes 2) 2. Use trials as opportunities for growth (James 1:2–4)

5. Practice forgiveness (Luke 11:4) 6. Practice generosity (Proverbs 11:25) 7. Nurture relationships (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) 8. Express gratitude (1 Thessalonians 5:18) 9. Care for their bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19–20) 10. Care for their souls (Ecclesiastes 12:1,13) Now while these behaviors don’t guarantee a life without problems, scripture teaches that they shape our hearts in ways that open us to God’s peace, joy, and contentment. I look forward to exploring these practices with you in our winter sermon series.

In closing, if you were to ask me, “Willis, what makes you truly happy?” My answer is simple.

After years of ministry, lived experience, and more than a few mistakes, I have learned that the crux of it all—what brings me contentment and peace is this simple truth: I am a beloved child of God. Despite my faults, failures and shortcomings, I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I belong to God. This identity grounds me, steadies me, comforts me, and ultimately brings me a peace that passes all understanding.

My prayer is that in 2026, you discover (or rediscover) that same truth for yourself.

May this New Year lead us—not to fleeting happiness—but to the lasting joy found in knowing who and Whose we are.

Sometimes a happy memory can come from a period of sadness.

I was 26 years old when my Mother passed away due to an illness. She and I were very close so it was devastating to lose her. A month before she passed, I bought a porcelain musical bird to give her for Mother’s Day while she was in the hospital.

I worried that it might not be the right gift. I watched her face while she opened the box and saw her very excited expression. She held up the bird and then wound up the music stem on the bottom. The tune “Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head” began to play. She had a big smile on her face.

When a nurse came in the room and admired the bird, my Mom pointed to me and said “my daughter gave this to me for Mother’s Day!” I felt very happy that I had picked the right gift for her.

Today, more than 50 years later, the bird sits on a shelf in my living room. Every time I see it I remember the close and loving relationship I had with my Mom. It still makes me happy to remember that we shared this sweet moment so many years ago.

CONFIRMATION CLASS OF 2026

Confirmation, by definition, is faith formation. Forming one’s faith is an ongoing journey throughout life…however, our hope is that through this Confirmation process, you will be given the opportunity, tools, support, and inspiration you will need to build your faith on a firm foundation (Matthew 7:24-25). We, as Christians, are called to live a life that is different than that of the world, built on the foundation of what we know about God, and who He created us to be.

What better way to prepare our young people to live out their faith in this world than to help them realize that our faith is tangible?!

Our Confirmation classes will begin on January 7, 2026.

Each class will begin with dinner at 6:00PM, followed by class at 6:30PM. We will spend each week engaging in discussion, prayer, journaling, and considering how our faith is lived out in our everyday lives. Every Confirmand is asked to pick a Shepherd who will journey through the process with them, meet outside of class once a week to further our discussions, grow in relationship with each other, and pray together. There are two retreats and a couple of field trips as well! The hope is that through these experiences, you will come to encounter the living, loving Jesus Christ and will be transformed by that relationship.

A Front-Row Seat to Grace REV. OLIVER HELSABECK ohelsabeck@centenary-ws.org

There are many things I love about serving in congregational care, but one of the things that makes me happiest is witnessing the small, holy moments when the Body of Christ cares for itself. It could be tempting to think of congregational care as another program in the many ministries at Centenary, a task list, or even a set of responsibilities – but what fills my heart is watching how compassion quietly moves through the church like a warm current, reaching people when they need it most.

I’m happy when I see someone take a moment after worship to check in with another person whose spouse has recently come home from the hospital.

I’m happy when a Centenary Cares bag is delivered to the home of someone who didn’t ask for help but needed to know someone cares. I’m happy when a handwritten card arrives in a mailbox at just the right time, to remind someone that they are not forgotten, not alone, not beyond the reach of grace. I’m happy when a Stephen Minister sits in prayer with someone at a Refresh service to offer support and encouragement. I’m happy when I receive a note of gratitude from someone who has received flowers and a visit from our flower ministry volunteers.

These small acts may seem ordinary, but to me they are evidence of the extraordinary: the living presence of Christ flowing through everyday

people. We all can extend this love and care. Congregational care reminds me that ministry does not belong only to ministry staff or committees – it belongs to all of us, with each of us offering what we have. A listening ear. A simple prayer. A gentle touch. A willingness to be present.

In a world where people are often hurried, isolated, and overwhelmed, congregational care is a bright sign of another way. Congregational care is a lived testimony that the love of Christ is not abstract: it is embodied, carried on our feet, spoken through our voices, and offered through our hands. And every time I see that love in motion, it brings me joy, because it tells me that God is still forming us into a people who care deeply and faithfully for one another. I have received this love in my life from others, and it makes me want to share it too, so that others know how much they are deeply loved by Christ.

That, more than anything, is why congregational care makes me happy: it allows me to have a front-row seat to grace. It lets me watch as people reveal the heart of God through compassion and faith, and as the church becomes, even in small and gentle ways, the family God intends it to be.

What makes me happiest is that these acts are rarely grand gestures. They are usually quiet, humble offerings – but the beauty is in how God multiplies them. A phone call becomes a lifeline to hope. A visit becomes a reminder of dignity and worth. A prayer becomes a bridge from fear to peace of heart. When someone shares a burden and another person helps to carry it, I am reminded again of the beautiful truth: this is what church is meant to be. And it makes my spirit happy.

And there is no greater joy than that.

My Happy List “The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.”

When I was asked to write an article about happiness,

truthfully I wasn’t quite sure how to begin so I just decided to start by making a list of some of the things that make me happy.

As I looked at my list I realized that so many of the things on my list are things that I am blessed to do professionally.

I was reminded of my first day serving at Centenary. I walked into the building through the Fifth Street entrance of the sanctuary because at the time the auditorium was being renovated.

Susan Bates was playing the organ and as I walked down the center aisle all I could think was, “Wow! I get to work here!”

What a joy it is when the thing that makes you the happiest somebody actually pays you to do. Frederick

Buechner’s definition of vocation has always resonated with me and inspired me in my life and ministry with children.

I want kids to discover the great love that God has for them. I want to walk with them as they identify the unique gifts God has given them. I pray with and for them as they discover how to use those gifts to pour God’s love back into the world. I want each of our kids to have a moment as a grown up where they realize that they are spending their lives doing something they love and something that makes a difference.

How about you? Do you love what you spend your time doing? Do you

feel like you are making a difference in the world? I have the opportunity to watch many of you do just that here at Centenary: a small group leader who sparkles as you watch her interact with children, a man who shares his expertise with our trustees and helps to care for our facilities, a woman whose deep knowledge of money and investments guides our finance team with grace and expertise, a man who has never met a stranger and greets everyone who comes in our doors with a warm welcome, a woman who quietly shops for and wraps a ridiculous number of angel tree gifts. I could go on and on.

As you ponder what brings you happiness I leave you with this encouragement from Paul, “Make a careful exploration of who you are and the work you have been given.

And then sink yourself into that. Don’t be impressed with yourself. Don’t compare yourself with others. Each of you must take responsibility for doing the creative best you can with your own life.”

— Galatians 6:4-5 (The Message)

Confirmation Is the Best!!!

“Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.”

Recently,

Kevin and I were having a conversation with some of our church babies. One of them exclaimed, "Oh my gosh, Confirmation was the

year, the Confirmation journey with another class of incredible teenagers.

The season in the life of the church where we invite all our seventh graders (and any others beyond seventh

part of their lives, not just at church, but every day in every circumstance. After all, Paul tells us that we are to “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:16 & 18). Our faith is about being in constant relationship with the One who loves us first and always.

We want to ask that you be a part of this experience and live out the promises that you made at many of these church baby's baptisms when you said,

best!” Another one in reply said, "Confirmation got me through seventh grade!” And yet another said, "Yeah, I was so sad when Confirmation was over.” And finally, our conversation ended with four of them asking if they could be senior high youth leaders for this year’s Confirmation class...and, of course, the answer was “yes!’ I share this conversation with you as just one instance of the inexpressible and glorious joy that is lived out when people discover their faith, their love for Jesus, and the desire to love others on behalf of that fresh faith and love of Christ.

January begins one of my most favorite times of the

grade who haven’t had the chance) to be part of our ‘faith forming’ ministry and consider claiming their faith as their very own. It is a beautiful time of exploring and understanding the Apostles Creed and how that statement of faith is lived out in EVERYTHING we do. So often Confirmation becomes a litany of learning the denomination and structure of the church and less about becoming faith followers of God the Father, Jesus Christ the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Our hope and prayer with our Confirmation ministry is that our church babies will come to know and to practice their faith in every

“With God's help we will proclaim the good news and live according to the example of Christ.

We will surround these persons with a community of love and forgiveness, that they may grow in their trust of God, and be found faithful in their service to others. We will pray for them, that they may be true disciples who walk in the way that leads to life.”

Please surround, love, and pray for these church babies as we accompany them each Wednesday night for the next five months (and really for the rest of their lives). And as we go on field trips and retreats.

Pray for their Shepherds who will walk gently beside them and renew their own faith in Jesus as they do it. Pray

for their parents as they live into their promises they made at their children’s baptism as their children claim their faith as their own. Pray for our senior high youth leaders who loved Confirmation so much that they long to give these Confirmands the same experience they had. Pray for us, your youth ministers, as we faithfully listen and pay attention to the invitation of the Holy Spirit to love our Confirmands

on behalf of Jesus in hopes of loving them to Jesus.

As Briggs Brown so thoughtfully said on our last podcast, “Across the Table with Tammy & Kevin,” “Confirmation for me was like when I really kind of realized my parents instilled in me to come to church, do all the things, but now it’s really my journey. Confirmation really gave me a

community to rely on and to fall back on.” Friends, there is inexpressible joy in watching our church babies claim their faith as their own, proclaim their faith in Jesus, and make a commitment to the church as an outward and visible sign of the inward grace they have received. For me, there is no greater joy, there is no holier experience, there is no more hopeful moment than when a church baby says yes to Jesus.
