2010 Nissan 370Z Roadster

Nissan’s Z-Car living up to its legacy Nissan’s “Z-Car” has captured the imagination of musclecar and street sports car enthusiasts since its introduction in 1969. The original Z began life in Japan as the Nissan Fairlady Z — named by Nissan/ Datsun executives after the Broadway play, “My Fair Lady.” It was soon exported to the United States as the Datsun 240Z, as marketing chiefs advised that while the arts are a great selling tool in Japan, American drivers would not flock around a car named after a musical. It was also decided to bring the vehicle to the U.S. under the Datsun badge, rather than the Nissan logo. That first Z featured a 2.4liter inline-6 engine that produced 151hp, and the numeric-alpha name has always been indicative of engine size: 240 for the 2.4liter engine, 260 for a 2.6liter, 280 for a 2.8-liter and so on. Today’s 370Z gets its force from a 3.7-liter engine.

A commercial success Over the past 41 years, the Z has earned praise for its consistency as an exciting head-turner, a reliable performance car and an affordable sports car. Arguably the top-selling sports car of all-time, with 1.7 million vehicles sold over six generations of Z-Cars (largely engine size differences), the Z also gained cult status as an “Enjoy the Ride” TV commercial star for the 1996 Nissan 300ZX commercial “Toys” covered by Van Halen’s song, “You Really Got Me.” The rarely seen “Toys 2” featured a Nissan Pathfinder SUV, covered by the KISS song, “Calling Dr. Love.” Both commercials featured dolls similar to Barbie, Ken and GI Joe, but to avoid losing a lawsuit from Mattel (who DID sue and lose) the characters were named Roxanne, Tad and Nick (Nick whisks Rox-

Sportage starts at $20,990 and the lowest-priced Sportage with all-wheel drive has a starting retail price of $22,490. In comparison, the 2010 Nissan Rogue, another small, four-cylinder-powered crossover SUV, has a starting retail price of $21,260 with automatic transmission, 170 horsepower and two-wheel drive. Another competitor, the 2010 Honda CR-V, starts at $22,325 with automatic transmission, 180 horsepower four cylinder and twowheel drive. The new Sportage uses the same platform that’s in the 2010 Hyundai Tucson. Hyundai’s automotive group based in South Korea owns both Hyundai and Kia. But the Tucson and Sportage look nothing like each other, and the 2011 Tucson has a higher starting retail price of $19,540 with manual transmission and two-wheel drive.

New look Truth is, the Sportage doesn’t look like a Sportage anymore, either. The boxy shape is gone, replaced by a flowing roofline and styling that’s more urban than outdoorsy. The size is a bit larger than the 2010 Sportage as dimensions here and there are tweaked, contributing to a roomier feel inside. For example, the new Sportage is 2.1 inches wider than its predecessor and 3.5 inches longer from bumper to bumper. But in height, the new Sportage is 2.3 inches shorter, which helps explain why the back window provides a condensed view out back for the driver. The 2.4-liter, double overhead cam four cylinder in the test vehicle worked well to get the more than 3,100pound Sportage moving quickly down city roads and flat highways. Torque peaks at 168 foot-pounds at 4,000 rpm, and there was some noisiness during passing maneuvers on slight uphill grades, but the SUV

The 2010 Nissan 370Z lives up to that credo two ways – available as a coupe and a roadster — and my test roadster met or exceeded all expectations.

Color of the century Bathed in Black Cherry paint — Black Cherry could be the Candy Apple Red of the 21st century — the 370Z aggressively and artistically carries the look of a traditional roadster’s appearance with style and class — utilizing a long nose and short cockpit. The wheelbase is nearly four inches shorter than that of the previous generation, (100.4 inches versus 104.3 inches) and overall length is reduced by 2.6 inches (167.2 inches versus 169.8 inches). The 370Z also measures a sporty 72.8 inches wide and stealthy 52.2 inches high. The new Z Roadster features unibody construction made of corrosion-resistant high-strength steel, and an aluminum hood, door panels and trunk for reduced weight. At the same time, the body structure was extensively revised, improving rigidity and stability. Exterior features include 18-inch 5-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, high-performance Bridgestone Potenza RE050A high-performance tires, High Intensity Dis-

charge bi-functional xenon headlights , LED taillights , LED illuminated Z® side marker emblems, bodycolor dual-power heated outside mirrors, single muffler with Y-type dual exhaust outlets with finishers and power moving tonneau cover. The system is quick, precise and brawny, with excellent acceleration in all ranges, as evidenced by a zero-to60mph sprint in 5.4 seconds and a 13.7-second quartermile run. The rear-wheel drive roadster is responsive with a firm body, and is a ride to enjoy on the autocross, the interstate, in town and on country roads, but road irregularities are felt with harshness in the cabin – good for a track driver, but uncomfortable for street passengers. Engine and tire noise are pronounced, but after all … it IS a roadster.

Cozy cockpit The well-appointed and cozy cockpit provides 38.7 inches of headroom with the top down, 42.9 inches of legroom, 54.6 inches of hip room and 54.4 inches of shoulder room. The seating position is high and forward sight is excellent, though rear three-quarter blind spots make highway lane changes a challenge.

Destination and handling put $750 on the sticker, for a drive-off of $38,980 plus tax and license.

THE SENTINEL GIVES BACK! still performed well overall. I suspect some drivers and passengers might forget only a four banger is under the hood, because the power is well-managed and the engine doesn’t sound buzzy. The most popular transmission will be the six-speed automatic, which worked smoothly in the test Sportage. But a six-speed manual is available on the base vehicle.

Gas mileage I only got 18 miles per gallon in combined city/highway fuel mileage on my first drive, not the 23 mpg rating that the government gives he allwheel drive Sportage. The 18 mpg, by the way, was the fuel economy rating for last year’s Sportage. But later driving was better, garnering 20 mpg in combined city/highway travel, and I didn’t really try hard to maximize mileage. For the record, the new Sportage is rated at 21 mpg in city driving and 28 mpg on the highway. This compares with 21/26 mpg for Nissan’s Rogue with all-wheel drive and 21/27 mpg for an allwheel drive Honda CR-V. There was a good amount of road noise that came through to the interior of the Sportage, and it can be fatiguing. Passengers felt vibrations quite often as the Sportage traveled over road bumps and uneven pavement. The front independent suspension uses MacPher-

son struts, while the back has new independent multi-link design that helps maximize cargo space. Steering was comfortable, and while I could feel some body lean in curves and turns, body motions overall were nicely managed. While the tester was a topof-the-line model topping out at near $30,000 with leather-covered seats, panorama roof, rearview camera and other add-ons, the basic package of the Sportage at a lower price still can convey a quality ride and be impressive. Heated and cooled front seats are offered for the first time and worked fast in the test Sportage EX. But only the driver gets seat height adjustment, so at 5 feet 4, I felt like I was sitting in a hole when I was in the front passenger seat. In the back seat, I had to lift myself just a bit to get inside. Large side windows provided good views out. Be aware that the rear liftgate handle is low and right atop the back bumper. Rear seatbacks don’t go down full flat, and cargo space tops out at 54.6 cubic feet, which is less than the 57.9 cubic feet in the Rogue. Microsoft’s UVO — meaning “your voice” — includes voice recognition so you can talk to the Sportage to get it dial the phone and change music. UVO isn’t available until later in the model year.
