BLAZE FESTIVAL 2014

Creating the next generation of Cultural Producers

5-7 SEPT

WELCOME TO BLAZE! Blaze Festival is back for 2014! We’ve been working on a programme to inspire young people to become the next generation of cultural producers, and the team is really excited to share it with you. This September will see our core programme taking place at The Harris in Preston – an important cultural building in the heart of Lancashire, housing an Art Gallery, Library and Museum. For the first time there will also be satellite activity happening in museums and libraries all over Lancashire… so keep your eyes peeled for film screenings, workshops and exhibitions near you! @blazearts

Paul Kelly Senior Arts Development Manager Lancashire County Council Blaze supports the development of the next generation of cultural producers by enabling young people aged 14 - 21 to explore their own creative ideas and turn them into real live projects. Since 2012, when the Blaze Festival was one of the key events of the Cultural Olympiad in the North West, Blaze has been working hard to embed itself within libraries and museums across Lancashire. In this way Blaze will enable young people to play a key role in the delivery of cultural activities that use our resources more effectively to support the creative development of young people – whilst also making our venues more stimulating and vibrant places to be! The Blaze Festival 2014 is a snapshot of this activity over a weekend as we build a new approach to our work with young people. We thank all our partners and venues for their support, especially More Music and the Harris in Preston. There is something for everyone so do enjoy – and do get in touch if you want to be involved!

PORTABLE PROJECTION Portable Projection is a pop-up cinema that’s all about using cultural buildings across Lancashire in a different way. Our aim is to make cinema and film accessible by offering free film screenings in spaces that you’d typically not expect to see one, and to turn them into events that grab the imagination – for instance we positively encourage the audience to dress up! Portable Projection is back for Blaze Festival 2014 with the main event being a series of screenings of the first three Indiana Jones films; Raiders of the Lost Ark, Temple of Doom and Last Crusade in the Harris Museum and Library in Preston. Come along dressed ready for a 1930’s adventure! Satellite events will also take place in a number of other venues across Lancashire. Our events are entirely free – all you need to do is visit our website at portable-projection.co.uk, select your screening and follow the link to reserve your ticket.

ANTHONY PRICE Anthony piloted Portable Projection at Blaze Festival 2013, and it’s back this year due to popular demand! This time, he’s led the team in producing some immersive screenings that will connect The Harris Museum & Art Gallery with some well-loved Indiana Jones classics. @AManNamedPrice

SARAH BATTY Sarah recently got involved in Blaze to work on the project Portable Projection. Sarah has an interest in distribution, and has played a part in choosing different venue spaces, props and ways of marketing the Indiana Jones screenings. @TotallyBatty

SOPHIE MERRIWEATHER Sophie became part of the team after attending one of Blaze’s monthly Blaze Forum events. Since then Sophie has become involved in both Masquerade and Portable Projection. @SoapyMerry

SOPHIE HEPPELL Sophie first got involved in Blaze through becoming a contributor for issue #5 of Blaze magazine, Culture on a Shoestring. Leading on from that Sophie, being a filmmaker, expressed interest in working on Portable Projection. @SophHeppell

CULTURE ON A SHOESTRING Culture on a Shoestring is Blaze’s magazine. It exists to get the word out about free and low-cost culture across Lancashire and to make the arts more accessible to young people. This year we’ve been collaborating with The Harris Museum & Art Gallery to bring you the ARTIST ROOMS edition, and we’re now working with visual arts collective North by NorthWest to bring you issue #5. Level Up will be hosting a Culture on a Shoestring publishing masterclass during Blaze Festival 2014, as part of our project with Money for Life Challenge. Laura Robertson of The Double Negative will be sharing knowledge and skills around publishing in a one-off session in the Harris Library – so it’s a must for any independent writers out there. To save your spot on the masterclass, drop Laura an email at laura@cultureonashoestring.co.uk

cultureonashoestring.co.uk @culturestring /cultureonashoestring

LAURA HADDICK Laura founded the magazine with the Blaze team shortly after Blaze Festival 2012. Since then, she’s managed the project through five issues and collaborations with ARTIST ROOMS and North by NorthWest.

ANTHONY PRICE Anthony has been the editor of Culture on a Shoestring since the pilot issue, which formed his gold Arts Award leadership project in 2013. If you’d like to write for future issues, give him a shout!

SHONA THOMPSON Shona is the magazine’s media officer, keeping our social media channels up to date and spreading the word about Culture on a Shoestring.

LEVEL UP Level Up is a programme to connect, inspire and inform young people who are working towards a career in the arts. We started the project at Blaze Festival 2013, and since then level-up.co.uk has been launched due to popular demand! We’re aiming to reach a wider audience than ever before, and showcase the best creative and entrepreneurial talent Lancashire and the North West has to offer. Blaze Festival 2014 brings you an exciting Level Up programme that aims to connect and inspire creative people. Through masterclasses in publishing, marketing, creative enterprise and more, you’ll have the opportunity to meet industry professionals and gain some insider knowledge. The main event takes place in the Harris, Preston with some Satellite events also taking place in a number of other venues across Lancashire. Spaces are limited at some of our workshops, so make sure you book your place by emailing jakub@level-up.co.uk

SHONA THOMPSON Shona’s first love is theatre, and she’s created Masquerade to connect audiences with a story in an unexpected and immersive way.

MASQUERADE Renowned archaeologist Professor Donoghue is hosting a VIP event at The Harris, Preston to unveil his latest discovery. He doesn’t know it yet, but the evening isn’t going to go quite as planned… uninvited guests, family feuds and old rivalries will result in a night to remember. That’s where you come in – get your invitation and help solve a mystery through Masquerade’s unique brand of interactive performance. We’ll take you on a journey through The Harris - Art Gallery, Library and Museum where you’ll collect evidence, talk to the characters and shape the story!

JADE KAY Jade is interested in voice acting and is looking to go to drama school next September. She’s currently part of the cast and is undertaking her Silver Arts Award, focusing on directing.

DAMON BETTS Damon is taking on the role of the journalist for the murder mystery and has been very involved in creating the plot. He takes performing arts at college, takes drama at A-Level and is interested in all things theatre!

LUIS PEARSON-DORE Luis is interested in game design and film, but he is quite new to theatre and performance. He’s immersed himself within the plot straight away and really took on the challenge! He’s playing the role of the Security Guard and is really looking forwards to his first ever acting performance.

MARIANNE WILSON Marianne enjoys anime and is interested in drawing. She is interested in all things Sherlock, which is perfect for Masquerade! She’s currently playing the role of the curator of the exhibition and has been busy researching into the plot to help us create a realistic story.

ANNA STEPHENSON

masquerade-theatre.co.uk @mystery_theatre /masqueradetheatre

Anna has been in previous Blaze performances, including ‘A Step in Time’ (2013) and ‘Street Quest’ (2012). She loves theatre and is always on the lookout to get involved in anything creative. In Masquerade, Anna has added to the plot and is also taking on the role of Lady Sarah.

ANGELA CRUICKSHANK Angela trained in Drama at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. She recently collaborated with Shattering Images at the Dukes Theatre in Lancaster and is currently co-writing a crime comic with partner Andy Diggle for Dynamite Entertainment. For Masquerade, Angela has been busy creating the overall plot and has been key to bringing the story to life.
