Page 1

2018 YEAR OF THE DOG Over the past few years, China and UK are both benefited from the ‘Golden Era’ relationship. The China-UK relationship has grown from strength to strength since then. The deep and broad links between the two countries range from trading and investment to education and the arts, science and innovation, sports and tourism. In Liverpool we have the oldest history of Chinese population in Europe. Liverpool has enjoyed relationships with China over many hundreds of years, and now is building stronger connections with China than ever before. After the success of the Year of the Rooster, Liverpool’s Chinatown is galloping towards the Year of the Dog celebrations that will commenced on Sunday 18th February 2018.

2018 is one of the most special years for many reasons. The city of Liverpool will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of receiving the title of European Capital of Culture; China’s First Emperor’s Terracotta Warriors will be exhibited in Liverpool World Museum and this leads to a 9 months China Dream celebration which involves different activities from February up till October across the city and beyond. This is the Year of the Dog, starting from 16th February 2018 (Chinese New Year). Dog is the eleventh in the 12-year cycle of Chinese Zodiac sign. It can be a very eventful year with many changes all over the world. Dog is man’s good friend who can understand the human’s spirit and obey its master whether he is wealthy or not. The Chinese regard it as an auspicious animal. If a dog happens to come to a house, it symbolizes the coming of fortune. People born in the

Year of the Dog are usually independent, sincere, loyal and decisive according to Chinese zodiac analysis. They are not afraid of difficulties in daily life. These shining characteristics enhance them to have harmonious relationship with people around them. To celebrate the Year of the Dog, Culture Liverpool, Liverpool Chinese Community groups and other organisations have arranged a series of arts and cultural events from Friday 16th February, with the main celebration taking place on Sunday 18th February. As always, the street festivities will be fun-filled, with plenty of activities for children and adults to enjoy, including: 11:30am Chinese New Year Market (Great George Street) 11:30am Lion, Dragon & Unicorn Street Parades (Chinatown) 1:00pm Spectacular Firecracker Display (Great George Street) The 2018 Liverpool Chinatown Chinese New Year Co-ordinating Committee would like to thank its sponsors and supporters and wish you all “Gung Hey Fat Choi!”

Jingwei Legacy - Chinese New Year Lumiere Friday 16th February - Saturday 17th February (Nelson St / Chinese Arch)

7:30pm - 8:30pm Sunday 18th February 6:30pm - 7:00pm (Nelson St / Chinese Arch) (one show only) Following on from last year’s amazing Chinese New Year Lumiere, Jingwei & the Ocean, this year’s tale follows the story of Jingwei and the arrival and development of the Chinese communities across the UK and Liverpool. The story focuses on the mythical Jingwei bird which for centuries has been dropping seeds, sticks and stones from its homeland into the ocean - which have grown and formed new, diverse lands and communities.

As a reward for dedicating her life to the creation of new communities, a god transforms Jingwei into the young girl she used to be before she became a bird. She returns to her village determined to encourage people to join her in building these new, exciting islands, but is rejected by old and young alike, who dismiss her as fanciful. However, after returning to the Ocean to talk of her woes, the god presents to her dozens of boys and girls who will join in her mission, all of them dedicated to winning over the sceptical villagers.

Thanks to their enthusiasm and willingness to accept each other’s different cultures, the villagers, Jingwei and her new friends all join together, dancing and parading around the village which is happier now than it’s ever been before. By embracing each other’s cultural diversities they all felt at home and were happy for many, many years to come. Jingwei Legacy is a collaboration between Illuminos, Pagado Arts and First Take with soundtrack by Jah Wobble and Tien and Chi Chi.

The project is funded and supported by Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council and COoL.

With thanks to The Black-e and The Arch LCBA, The Chinese New Year Committee and the Chinese Community.
