What kind of opportunities crafts starts to offer us if taken beyond a production belonging to pre industrialization period and a lifestyle? Do we have a chance to redefine the changing status of crafts today through the crafts system in Istanbul? Crafts type of production which is diminishing in the world and even vanished in some regions still subsists in Istanbul and as part of “network” structure clusters in certain areas and particularly in city center. In this regard since 19th century Ottoman Empire Westernization Period, Beyoğlu has been one of the important crafts centers of Istanbul. In this sense crafts workshops in Beyoğlu managed to modernize themselves in face of contemporary needs and demands rather than staying as a “disappearing” production type. In this context would it be possible to reposition crafts workshops and quarters within Istanbul or specifically in Beyoglu as “innovative and creativity centers”?
