ENG/The I.C.E. project, funded by the Programme MED, is a joint initiative of six European partners for the establishment of a system to support for cultural and creative businesses in the territories where the project has been developed. In this book are represented some of the companies who have participated throughout the project.

Konstantinos Gaglias As Europe is opening its market to developing economies, the support of art-related and cultural businesses becomes of an increasing importance. The creation and development of sustainable art-related and cultural businesses serves a twofold objective as on the one hand this type of businesses preserve and promote the European identity and on the other they promote the ‘brand’ of each respective territory. Recognizing that Attica is a region with a rich cultural heritage, BIC of Attika is investing in this respective field by participating in the I.C.E. project. L’apertura del mercato europeo ad economie in espansione rende sempre più determinante il supporto di imprese legate alla sfera dell’arte e culturali. La creazione e lo sviluppo di imprese artistiche e culturali sostenibili hanno un duplice scopo: da una parte questo genere di attività preserva e promuove l’identità europea; dall’altra esso fortifica il “brand” di ciascun territorio. In such context, Matera with the Rioni Sassi UNESCO site represents a great cultural and tourism attractor today. By seizing the opportunities given by Sviluppo Basilicata Cultural Incubator in Rioni Sassi, the I.C.E. project puts itself in the service of art and culture for business creation and development. E’ opinione diffusa che le attività artistiche, culturali, creative siano slegate da logiche di profitto, in realtà sono sinonimo di crescita e sviluppo. In Europa il trend per tali industrie è molto positivo, rendendo i luoghi ove sono presenti attraenti per turismo e investitori. In questo contesto, Matera con i Rioni Sassi, tutelati dall’Unesco, oggi è un grande attrattore turistico culturale. In Basilicata il progetto I.C.E., valorizzando tali opportunità attraverso l’Incubatore culturale di Sviluppo Basilicata nei Rioni Sassi, si pone a servizio dell’arte e della cultura per la creazione e lo sviluppo di iniziative e di imprese.

Fabiana Santini Cultural policies and creativity are gaining a pivotal role within the European debate: attention is focusing on“culture” system development and on how it has been influencing entrepreneurial fabric. I.C.E. project, in which Lazio Regional Council, led by Giunta Polverini, participates with great conviction, works on the assumption that enhancement of cultural enterprises is grounded on a stronger attention to heritage and landscape as well as to regional scientific and technological potentials. Innovation lies in and thrives on the connection with the territory as cultural product in a competitive context, hence the importance of investing in culture. Le politiche culturali e la creatività stanno assumendo un ruolo strategico all’interno del dibattito europeo: l’attenzione si sta concentrando sull’evoluzione del sistema “cultura” e sulle contaminazioni che si sono create con il tessuto imprenditoriale. Il progetto I.C.E., a cui la Regione Lazio, sostenuta dalla Giunta Polverini, partecipa, parte dal presupposto che l’incremento delle imprese del settore si fondi su una maggiore attenzione al patrimonio culturale, al paesaggio e alle potenzialità scientifiche e tecnologiche della regione. L’innovazione risiede nella connessione stabilita con il territorio come “prodotto culturale” in un contesto competitivo, da qui l’importanza di investire nella cultura.

Alexiei Dingli Small and Medium Enterprises must constantly sustain their growth and the most valuable way to do so is to augment important assets such as talent, IPR, skills and entrepreneurship.Valletta,Malta’s capital and a World Heritage site has been portrayed as a dynamic city that has responded to such cultural and business dynamics. At the heart of Europe’s smallest capital city, lower Strada Stretta represents a colourful and ambiguous element of Maltese cultural heritage. The I.C.E. project can therefore generate economic growth within Malta through its cultural activities which are further expanded via the creation of an incubator for cultural enterprises. Le Piccole e Medie Imprese debbono costantemente sostenere la propria crescita ed il modo più efficace per far ciò è di accrescere risorse preziose quali talento, IPR, competenza e capacità imprenditoriale. La Valletta, capitale di Malta nonché sito dichiarato Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità, è stata descritta come una città dinamica che ha risposto a tali dinamiche culturali e commerciali. Nel cuore della più piccola capitale europea, la parte inferiore di Strada Stretta rappresenta un variopinto ed ambiguo elemento del patrimonio culturale maltese. Il progetto I.C.E. può dunque generare crescita economica nel territorio di Malta tramite le sue attività culturali che vengono ulteriormente ampliate attraverso la creazione di un incubatore per imprese culturali.

Ângelo Verdades de Sá The 14 municipalities at the heart of Alentejo Region are part of a territory with a rich cultural heritage and a recent history of intervention in the patrimonial and cultural levels. The city of Évora stands out, being part of the world heritage list, but other places in Central Alentejo present also a relevant heritage mark and an important economic activity linked to it, that we intent to promote and develop. We highlight the enterprises and other entities that operate in local services, in tourism, in heritage restoration, in artistic creation or cultural animation.They are key actors in the territorial development and CIMAC intends to see them grow and expand. I 14 comuni situati nel cuore della Regione Alentejo appartengono ad un territorio caratterizzato da un ricco patrimonio culturale e da una recente storia di interventi a livello sia patrimoniale che culturale. Annoverata nella lista dei siti dichiarati Patrimonio Mondiale, emerge senza dubbio la città di Evora, ma anche altri luoghi dell’Alentejo Centrale presentano segni di un considerevole patrimonio culturale ed una fiorente attività economica ad esso collegata, che noi siamo fermamente intenzionati a promuovere e sviluppare. Vogliamo mettere in risalto le imprese ed altri soggetti operanti nei servizi locali, nel turismo, nel restauro del patrimonio storico-culturale, nella creazione artistica o nella animazione culturale. Essi costituiscono gli attori chiave per lo sviluppo territoriale e CIMAC intende vederne la crescita e l’espansione.

Málaga is a Spanish city, capital of the province in the region of Andalusia. Located on the south of Spain and just over 100 km from Africa, its township occupies 395 km2 and is located in the center of a bay surrounded by mountains and crossed by two rivers, the Guadalhorce and the Guadalmedina that flow into the Mediterranean. With 565,000 inhabitants, Málaga is the sixth largest city in Spain, second in Andalusia and also the most densely populated urban area of 160 km from the Costa del Sol.

Was Founded by the Phoenicians in the eighth century BC, Málaga was a confederate city of the Roman Empire and a prosperous medina four times capital from his own kingdom. During the nineteenth century the city experienced a remarkable and revolutionary industrial activity which placed the first industrial town in Spain. Was starring in the explosion of the tourist boom of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and today is a remarkable economic and cultural center at regional level. Its catchment area covers 12 other municipalities totaling more than 850,000 inhabitants.

An experimental Sound & Music creation school provides new nonformal high level, updated and personal training in the music and industry related fields, plus an extended support to develop their own pathways inside the music world. A core of consulting helps and works in common with a number of organizations, networks and groups, supporting and engaging diverses communities of practices. Luca Acito is a film director and author of several cultural projects on cinema and new technologies. Documentaries’ director (Wu-ming – Havana Glam, Adrian Tranquilli – The believer, Pornologos), video artist (Heritage, Extracreato – Project59), animator (GrandBrasserieCyrano drawings by Giuseppe Palumbo), he works with theatrical, research and innovation companies throughout Italy; among other things he conducts a survey on the contamination of languages between truth and theatrical virtual screenings. He has directed the feature film “The Legacy of Cain” by 89
Filippo Timi in 2006. He’s working with CinefabricaMatera since 2006. In 2008, he abandons all, becoming a beggar for the superfluous (www.surplusneedy.com).

Tarquinia’s necropolis is located 90km north from Rome in the province of Viterbo in a really interesting position as far as tourism is concerned: only 45 minutes away from the Rome - Fiumicino airport and 2 hours and a half from Florence and Pisa. Tivoli Villa Adriana is located near Tivoli’s centre, at 35km east of Rome; it represents one of the most massive Villas dating from Roman times. Villa d’Este located in the town center is one of the most outstanding works of hydraulic architecture of 16th century. Tivoli can be reached from Via Tiburtina.

Bir Mula Heritage is situated on St. Margerita Hill, one of the five hills of Bormla (Cospicua). From excavations at the site, many artefacts show that the site was inhabited from a very early age. Chert tools, red ochre, Neolithic sling stones, bones of animals and marine creatures and pottery show that the site was formerly, a site for settlers who had contact with the Sicilian Islands. Stone-works, graffiti and pottery indicate that the site was then a shrine or some spot integrated within the Punic cult. 109
The Punic cultured residents remained long through the Roman era.

Central Alentejo covers an area of 7.228,8 km2, with 170.640 habitants. In the regional context, this sub-region presents itself as one of the most dynamic territories, with reasonable levels of competitiveness and social cohesion. Its extensive territory is almost always flat, only interrupted by low mountains and hills and cut by small streams.
L’Alentejo centrale si estende su di un’area di 7.228,8 km2 ed ha una popolazione di 170.640 abitanti. Nel contesto regionale questa sub-regione si presenta come uno dei territori più dinamici, con accettabili livelli di competitività e coesione sociale. Il suo vasto territorio è per lo più pianeggiante, interrotto solamente da montagne di modesta altezza e colline ed attraversato da piccoli corsi d’acqua.

With a well-preserved rural landscape, the region presents highly personalized differentiating elements and high patterns of environmental quality. The region’s rich and vast natural and cultural heritage sets it up as a center of tourism attraction, namely Évora, classified by UNESCO as a world heritage city, but also other urban and rural clusters, with a magnificent heritage estate. Such strong cultural identity justifies a bet on its preservation and renders obvious the need to implement projects that take it on as a development agent.
La regione presenta considerevoli peculiarità e notevoli esempi di bellezze paesaggistiche perfettamente conservate. Il ricco e vasto patrimonio naturale e culturale della regione la innalzano a centro di grande attrazione turistica, come Evora, riconosciuta dall’UNESCO come Patrimonio Mondiale, ma anche altri agglomerati urbani e rurali, caratterizzati da magnifiche proprietà patrimoniali. Una così forte identità culturale impone di essere salvaguardata ad ogni costo, rendendo chiaramente necessaria la realizzazione di progetti che la considerino quale fattore di sviluppo e crescita.
