Lyons Practice Studio-Cult.
“A city is more than a place in space, it is drama in time”- Patrick Geddes In this studio we explore the discourse between Environmental Design in a Capitalist context. We engage specifically with Collins Street as a quintessential example of market success to experiment with our ideas that seek to create a dialogue. Each building that is nominated is important to the commercial, political and social history of Collins Street. The extension/remodelling will provide space for the new program and further the architectural conversation with the existing building. Each project advocates for a sustainability idea and approach which then develop into larger propositions for the city and about sustainability.
Each group presented with a set of ideas that they responded to with program attached. These were; • “Sustainability is only for those who can afford it”- Leyla and Sherri • “Sustainability is achieved by popular consensus” –Stephanie and Xiaolin • “Sustainability is led by consumers”- June, Shuhan & Rhys • “Sustainability is disrupting the economy”- Cathy & Qianbin • “Sustainability is achieved by everyday heroes”- Yucheng and Kithinji

Mcpherson’s Building.
Finally at the TOP of the climb!!
“Sustainability is achieved by everyday heroes This idea advocates that sustainability can be achieved by people taking small actions every day. In the city, this takes in the everyday experience of commuting for work, shopping and eating. An architectural expression that encompasses the life of the everyday hero in the city through the aforementioned functions as well as corporate life. Therein lies the point of discourse, a functional design in a capitalist context that celebrates and demonstrates the sustainable choices of the participating individuals. In a world of where change comes up against system inertia, this proposal is bold in its suggestions and expression to communicate a clear difference in experience through the building. The proposal then is driven to create a Microcosm that demonstrates the workings of the world to correct the detachment of small actions from their global effects. Demonstrating this through participation, exhibition and interactive architecture that engages with its context.
