JosephW.St.Geme,Jr.,MD,15thdeanoftheUniversityofColorado SchoolofMedicine,wasappointedtothatofficeonJanuary1,1985 andserveduntilhisuntimelydeathonSaturday,October11,1986at age55.Despitethebrevityofhistenure,hebroughtarenewedsenseof purposeanddirectiontotheschoolandarecordofaccomplishment thatwillbefeltformanyyearstocome.
Aforward-lookingleaderofgreatenergy,enthusiasm,imagination anddetermination,forwhomobstaclesexistedtobeovercome,Dr. St.Gemesuccessfullyrecruitedeightoutstandingdepartmental chairsduringhis21monthsinoffice.Hestrengthenedandexpanded theschool’sresearch,educationalandpatientcareprogramsto bettermeetthechallengesposedbythecurrentrevolutioninthe healthsciencesandhealthcaredelivery.
Dr.St.Gemereceivedbothhisbachelorofscienceanddoctorof medicinedegreesfromStanfordUniversity,wherehealsoplayed football–includingtheRoseBowlin1952–andreceivedAllPacificCoast andAll-Americanhonorablementions.Hesubsequentlycompleted residencytraininginpediatricsattheUniversityofMinnesotawherehe wentontobecomeassociateprofessorofpediatricsbeforejoiningthe medicalfacultyoftheUniversityofCaliforniainLosAngelesin1966as ChairmanofPediatrics,Harbor-UCLAHospital.From1981–83,hewas presidentoftheAssociationofMedicalSchoolPediatricDepartment ChairmenandpresidentoftheAmericanBoardofPediatrics.Atthetime ofhisdeath,hewaspresident-electoftheAmericanPediatricSociety.
InhonorofDr.St.Geme,theSt.GemefamilyestablishedtheSt.Geme LectureshipandtheJosephW.St.GemeMemorialEndowmentin1987. Eachyear,theJosephW.St.Geme,Jr.,MDAwardforOutstanding ResearchbyaResidentisgivenbytheDepartmentofPediatrics.Each yearatthelectureshipanawardisgiventoadeservingfourthyear medicalstudentwhohasdemonstratedoutstandingresearchwitha mentorandwhoisinterestedinacareerinacademicpediatrics.

Withmorethan15yearsofexperienceinherfield,sheisa physicianscientistfocusedonpreventionandtreatmentof neonatalviralinfectionsandleadsalaboratoryinvestigating immuneprotectionagainstvertically-transmittedviral pathogens,includingHIVandcytomegalovirus(CMV).
