Mary J. Hamel, MD

Medical Epidemiologist U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Senior Malaria Advisor Presidents Malaria Initiative After obtaining her medical degree at the University of Vermont, Mary Hamel, MD, trained in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of Colorado. She also completed an Epidemic Intelligence Fellowship at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and earned a diploma in tropical medicine at the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene.

For the past seven years, Hamel has led the Malaria Vaccines Program at the World Health Organization (WHO). She has steered global efforts in malaria vaccine implementation, including overseeing the $75 million Malaria Vaccine Implementation Program in Africa. Her career includes more than two decades of experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), focusing on malaria research and public health initiatives. Hamel has also been recognized with numerous awards for her leadership and contributions to global health including the WHO Director General Excellence Award in 2023, the University of Vermont Service to Medicine and Community Award and several CDC honorary awards.
