Exploring the world of film
Lots of cosy film nights, complete with popcorn and snacks, are planned as part of Tea Tree Gully Library’s movie theme this winter. Children can hit the movie trail in the library from 4 to 19 July to find answers to hidden clues about movies, with prizes for all who finish.
Our youth book club, Cover 2 Cover, will host The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party on 8 July, devoted to celebrating the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland.
As part of National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) Week, the Australian musical-comedy drama Bran Nue Dae, will be shown on 6 July.
A recent version of the film, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter, will be shown on the day. A special film panel, featuring authors and scriptwriters from the SA Film
Industry, will run in mid-July, while teens can enter a Hunger Games scavenger hunt and feast on 16 July. The movie theme was chosen through an online poll earlier this year. Another poll will be held in spring to determine our summer theme.

Community report card in Satisfaction is up in the City of Tea Tree Gully!
The results from our annual community survey conducted in March show more residents are satisfied with Council’s overall performance – up from 69% in 2014 to 76% this year. And satisfaction has also increased in a number of other areas, including the opportunity to have a say on Council issues; value for money in return for rates paid; litter and rubbish control; provision of street trees, parks, reserves and playing fields. Areas highlighted for improvement include footpaths, roadside verges and street tree maintenance, which we’ll be working hard to improve over the next year.
While satisfaction with provision of street trees has increased, the community survey has highlighted the need to improve street tree maintenance levels. 2

Exciting new play equipment will soon replace this 20-year-old Civic Park playground, which has reached the end of its useful life.
Swing to new playgrounds Local families can look forward to seeing exciting new play equipment installed at Civic Park playground by December.
While full details were unavailable at the time of going to print, we can tell you that we are working closely with playground specialists and Councillors to make sure it meets high standards on fun and excitement for children. It will be built largely on the site of the current outdated 20-yearold Civic Park playground, which is expected to be removed later this year. The upgrade is part of Council’s long-term plans to revitalise the Modbury area, including gradual improvements to Civic Park. We are seeking State Government funding to help fund the first stage of the playground upgrade, which is expected to cost up to $300,000. This funding would be on top of a $600,000 State Government grant announced in May this year to fund upgrades to local playgrounds at the following reserves: Canopus (Hope Valley), Illyarrie (Surrey Downs), Shannon (Banksia Park), Cronulla (Redwood Park), Bell (Highbury) and Fairview Park and Nagle (both Fairview Park). In addition to its regular playgrounds, outdoor fitness equipment is available at Veronica Reserve (Modbury North) and Bentley Reserve (Holden Hill).

More parking spaces There will soon be more public parking spaces available
at the Civic Centre and Tea Tree Gully Library, thanks to a new 29-space car park which will open shortly. The $65,000 car park is located between the Civic Centre and Sfera’s Park Suites and Convention Centre on Montague Road. It was funded through budget savings made over the past financial year so will not impact Council debt levels or rates. 3
Got rats on your property? We offer a free baiting service if you have rats in your roof space. Just call the Rat Control hotline on 1800 633 545 for assistance. However, we cannot assist with rat control elsewhere in your house or property. We recommend you call a pest controller or lay poison baits or traps to get rid of rats.
On the Wright Road to recovery Our road crews last month finished resurfacing a 1 km section of Wright Road at Modbury, addressing cracking and general wear and tear caused by age. The upgrade was part of an $800,000 funding package through the Australian Government’s Roads to Recovery grant program. Council rates funded an additional $4.7 million in roadworks in the past 12 months.
You can discourage them in the first place by: • Keeping food in sealed containers • Not piling wood on the ground or against sheds or fences. • Keeping your garden clean, including fruit or nuts that fall on the ground, and chicken coups and avaries.
Entrance statement! A big thank you to our multi-skilled graffiti removal volunteers, who are now turning their hands to refreshing estate entrance plaques in some suburbs. In addition to their regular roles of wiping out graffiti, they have repainted eight plaques in the past six months.

Water security continues to flow The City of Tea Tree Gully continues to have good water security, even after withdrawing from a $30 million eastern suburbs water recycling project.

You’re invited to join in our Planet Ark National Tree Day event when we’ll be planting 2,000 local native trees and shrubs at a local reserve. Our event is taking place at Holden Hill’s Baymor Reserve at 804 North East Road, with activities from 9.30am to 12.30pm on 26 July. Participating in National Tree Day is a great way to make a difference to your community while enjoying the great outdoors.

News in brief Sports Community Club has been taking place over the past three years. Council has spent $430,000 on clubroom improvements, with the club contributing $70,000. Recent works include a $210,000 upgrade to the spectator viewing area, a disability accessible toilet, a new hall ceiling and a commercial kitchen.
The area was largely cleared of noxious weeds last year, including pest willow trees. However, some willow trees were temporarily retained to provide a screen for the nearby O-Bahn track until native plants can provide sufficient screening.
The insects (Marchalina hellenica) suck the sap from pine, fir and spruce trees, which can lead to tree death, posing a threat to pine plantations in our State. The insects were found on pine trees at Balmoral Reserve with outbreaks also identified nearby on five private properties and two street trees.

Anzac service – We attended with our families the Anzac service at Tea Tree Gully, which was well conducted with dignity and reverence for those who made the supreme sacrifice for us.
It has been a time of reflection with this year being the 100th anniversary of Anzac.
We have both been heavily involved with meeting and assisting residents.
This centenary event was attended by approximately 4,000 residents who paid their respect to the words ‘lest we forget’. Budget – As members of the Audit Committee we are mindful of keeping our budget on track for reducing the level of debt as outlined in our LongTerm Financial Plan. Our intention is to keep our Council rate below 4% while still providing increased attention to parks, playgrounds, footpaths and general amenities as suggested by residents.

I’m also active on Council’s Traffic Management Safety Committee, working to make our streets safer. Modbury Hospital’s emergency department continues to receive attention, with Channel 7 holding a public forum in Drumminor Ward.

Sandy marched at the Tea Tree Gully RSL Anzac Dawn Service in honour of her grandfather who served from 1914–1919 with the 9th Light Horse in Gallipoli and Middle East. The Field of Remembrance on 1 May was a fantastic initiative for people to nominate a family member who served in World War I. Individual poppies were handmade to honour the nominee so family members could plant the poppies at a ceremony on Civic Park. Thank you to everyone involved for making these events special. Wynn Vale street beautification works are continuing and the Sherry Court playground equipment has been upgraded, plus shade sails will be installed later this year. Planning of the Modbury Heights precinct and in particular redevelopment of Hargraves Reserve is ongoing. Emma Reserve has been marked for a playground renewal and reserve rectification. We welcome residents’ calls and contact.
Together we attended an event to award grants to community groups and heard great stories about the benefits past grants had brought our community. Additionally, we both proudly attended the April 25 100 year of Anzac Dawn Service at Memorial Garden, Tea Tree Gully. Paula attended a gathering of residents from across the City to hear concerns about possible changes to the Modbury Hospital services and joined the annual Newroz Celebrations with the Adelaide Kurdish Youth Society. Bernie represented Mayor Knight to commemorate the Centenary of Anzac at the Field of Remembrance at Civic Park and attended the Gleeson College, Golden Grove High and Pedare Christian College celebration of the Gallipoli landing. More than 3,000 students were involved in these events. Paula and Bernie successfully called for a review of the Council support of small businesses in our City, exploring ways to stimulate our local economy and employment opportunities.

The service clubs in our community are quiet achievers, but members make a big difference to the lives of many people, both locally, nationally and sometimes internationally. They raise money with sausage sizzles, raffles and events to invest into local community projects, such as helping people with disabilities and children in need, medical research and international aid projects. While service clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions are active in our community, many have ageing memberships.
They need an injection of new, young members so they can pass the baton on to the next generation to continue the legacy of community service. I have been a long-time supporter of service clubs and strongly encourage younger community members to get involved. You’ll certainly sacrifice time and energy in the process, but the rewards are great! There’s the opportunity to make friends, get involved in community projects and have a lot of fun along the way.

A provocative series of prints and plates about inking paper and skin will be on display at Gallery 1855 from 8 July to 1 August. Curator Simone Tippett from the Union St Printmakers says the works are by contemporary Adelaide artists responding to the nexus between printmaking and tattooing in popular culture. “Many printmakers have an appreciation and interest in different forms of tattooing, piercing and scarification – and not just of skin – as these processes are akin to those of printmaking. “We are all fascinated with ink and surfaces, regardless of whether we own tattoos or not,” said Tippett.

Small business expo
Up to 80 businesses are expected to participate in a local small business expo on 20 August at the Golden Grove Arts Centre. “This will be a great networking and promotional opportunity for local businesses,” said Caren Brougham of the Tea Tree Gully Business Enterprise Centre (BEC), organisers of the annual event. “We’re expecting to build on the momentum of last year’s expo that featured a record 45 exhibitors,” she said. The BEC at St Agnes provides independent and practical help for local businesses throughout the year, including a number of networking and training events. The BEC is a not-for profit organisation receiving funding from the City of Tea Tree Gully and the Australian Government.
