Optimistic Outlook for 2021 Welcome to The Directory 2021, what a year 2020 has been, as I’m writing this we are about to enter the latest more restrictive 3 tier system to help reduce the spread of Covid -19, so depending on what part of the country you live in your social interaction will be at various levels ( Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland all have a different system) What I really want to concentrate on is all the positive news, there are vaccines that are highly effective and it will be a matter of just weeks before the rollout begins and once the most vulnerable members of society have been inoculated the restrictions on the rest of us can be relaxed significantly, and as more and more of us have protection we can get out and about again and enjoy what this country has to offer. One thing that has become apparent during this pandemic is that we didn’t realise how much we would have missed all the great places and things to do there are in our own back yards so to speak, it’s never been truer you don’t know what you’ve lost until it’s gone. When we were able to get out and about this year it was great to hear that a recent report highlighted the rise of the domestic “staycation” driven by travel restrictions and consumers less willing to go abroad meant that both Butlins and Centre Parcs saw increases of more than half (51%) year on year in the height of the summer and August was a bumper month with amusement parks such as Thorpe Park and Alton Towers up 29% and museums a whopping 55%.

In the next few months, many of us will be planning and booking our travel arrangements for 2021, this will be the year of recovery for Coach Tourism with many of us deciding to take excursions and holidays closer to home now that we’ve fallen back in love with what’s on offer in The Great British Isles. Here at Coach Touring, our thoughts are with all Coach Operators whose livelihood has been severely affected and unfortunately some will not have survived, but one thing is for sure, a more resilient professional group of travel professionals would be difficult to find anywhere else, and for this reason we know that it won’t be long before they’re back on the road again. Keep safe, Nigel

Coach Tourism Association John Wales, Chair, Coach Tourism Association

Looking ahead, my one greatest hope for our industry is that, when you read this we will be looking confidently ahead to a solid period of business recovery from Spring 2021 onwards.

It would be nice to be able to make predictions about an early uplift in the first three months of the year, but I do and realise the perils of such crystal ball gazing at this point. But I would say one thing. Mired as we are in the difficulties that COVID (and not to mention, BREXIT) have brought us, there will be a time when those sets of initials will be something that historians will refer to while entrepreneurial business people get on with running their companies.

The Directory bounding back onto coaches as if nothing had happened.

What it does mean is that we have to remember that, pre-COVID coach travel was responsible for 23 million visits to tourism providers every year. It means that we can be assured that, in the not too distant future ‘the thing’ will become part of everyday life and there is absolutely no reason why the people who made those 23m visits will not want to do so again, thus reinstating the £14bn they contribute to the economy and the 27,000 jobs they produce. We have only got to look at the lull of Summer 20 to realise how quickly bookings started to roll in.

But it will return. And when it does there will be an industry that is ready willing and able to provide the attractions, the accommodation and the wherewith all to get there; our coach tour operators. Fresh shoots will break through the topsoil as new companies start up, in many cases working with the expertise of those people who sadly had to give up their own companies at the depth of the pandemic.

So I just hope that, as you look through the pages of this excellent Coach Touring Year Book, you will be doing to find accommodation and attraction business partners to work with in the coming year which might even break a record; the speed with which holiday loving Brits forget the problems and take to the road once more. John Wales, Chair, Coach Tourism Association.

And, this being the case, I do know I can rely on both large corporate and mid-sized family-owned coach tour companies all over the country to grasp that nettle and make some wine out of it. My time as Chair of the CTA has continually proved to me that coach tour operators are there at the very top of the tree when it comes to business determination, flexibility and good old fashioned hard work – three qualities they have all demonstrated ‘above and beyond’ in 2020.

Above all, the important point to remember – whatever the conditions are as this yearbook goes to press – is that IT WILL PASS. That isn’t to say we’ll be able to pop a pill and never think about ‘it’ again, or that, having done so the Great British Public will be shutterstock_Lukasz Pajor

"We felt so safe" say Bakers Dolphin passengers

Having implemented many new procedures to comply with all relevant Covid-19 regulations and restrictions, to make their holidays as safe as they can possibly be.

The Directory Helmsley Walled Garden

Helmsley Walled Garden, is a tranquil and inviting space nestling at the foot of the North YorkMoors. Built-in 1758 the garden was originally designed to provide vegetables, fruit and flowers to the Feversham family at Duncombe Park. After World War One, the garden was leased out and became a commercial enterprise until 1982.It then fell into disuse and became overgrown. In 1994, a local lady Alison Ticehurst decided to restore the garden to a beautiful place for all toenjoy, and specifically as a place for horticultural therapy for those in need. Now it is a stunning visitor attraction, still changing and evolving and still providing a programme of social and therapeutic horticulture. The ethos of the Garden is to create a place where people can tap into the healing power of horticulture, or simply find a quiet place to sit and enjoy a stunning display of flowers throughout the seasons.

They welcome groups and coach parties to the garden, for groups of over fifteen people they offer discounted rates of entry. If you would like to discover even more on your visit then they can arrange a guided tour with one of their guides, these tours last around one hour. You can relax in the Vine House Café as part of your day dependingon the time of your visit, the Vine House Café can serve you morning coffee, a light lunch or afternoon tea. Bedfordshire Many country lanes and paths criss-cross Bedfordshire through splendid scenery. It is home to some of the world's most endangered species at some of the UK's best animal attractions including Woburn Safari Park and Whipsnade Wild Animal Park. Bedford is the county town and is dominated by the river and its many fine buildings. The Hangars at Cardington are a reminder of the areas rich aviation heritage. Groups can follow the WW11 'Airfield Trail' around the north of the county. For a real 'vintage' experience, groups will enjoy the Shuttleworth Collection where aircraft are kept in full flying order. Antique lovers will love to browse in the quaint shops of Georgian Ampthill and Woburn where they can also visit the magnificent Abbey. Cumbria Cumbria is one of the most popular destinations in the country for coach excursions. With its breathtaking scenery of crystal-clear lakes, soaring mountains and picture-postcard villages, it's easy to see why.

The heart of Cumbria is the Lake District National Park. Each of the lakes has its own charm and character. Windermere, England's longest lake is surrounded by rolling hills. At Coniston, visitors can enjoy a trip on the restored Steam Yacht Gondola, while the natural beauty of the scenery around the lakes at Rydal and Grasmere inspired much of William Wordsworth's poetry. Hampshire

Its historic towns and cities have great charm and character. Winchester, in particular, has particular appeal for groups, with its impressive Cathedral and period architecture. Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke and Eastleigh are thriving centres, contributing much to Hampshire's lively evening and cultural attractions. Portsmouth has successfully capitalised on its maritime heritage over the last fifteen years. New shopping and waterside developments in Portsmouth and Southampton add to the group visitor appeal. Herefordshire While the towns of Herefordshire are attractive and lively, to really experience the essence of this unspoilt county, visitors are advised to venture down the less travelled roads and explore the myriad of villages and hamlets that pepper the landscape in this unspoilt county.

There is much for groups to do and see, including the fairytale Georgian Eastnor Castle, which is dramatically situated in the Malvern Hills. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty and surrounded by a deer park, arboretum and lake, it boasts beautifully restored interiors.

Hertfordshire

The Directory

Hertfordshire, often described as London's back garden, is in fact a mosaic of nature reserves and green open spaces known as the Lee Valley Park, which stretches 26 miles from London's East End all the way to Broxbourne.

The historic city of St. Albans is a fascinating place, with its Georgian houses, antique shops and bustling market. The magnificent cathedral would be reason enough for groups to visit. It is dedicated to St Alban, a Roman who became the first Christian martyr when he died for his beliefs in the 3rd century. Hatfield House, childhood home of Queen Elizabeth I, is one of the jewels of England's heritage. To the north, Knebworth House sits in 250 acres of parkland and is well worth a visit. London The biggest city in Europe has something for everyone. It may not be the easiest place to navigate, but bring a party to London and they will never cease to thank you for your trouble. Take advantage of the extensive public transport system (only Londoners actually complain about it) and let your party alight at a convenient location, and let the underground train take the strain. With so much to take in, even the website weighs a ton. So sit comfortably and find that all of London's attractions can be reviewed at www.visitlondon.com Bateaux London Embankment Pier Victoria Embankment London WC2N 6NU Tel: Tel +44 (0)01753 202 302 Web: www.bateauxlondon.com BBC Tours Room G002 Broadcasting House Portland Place London W1A 1AA Tel: 0370 901 1227 Web:www.bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/tours/ Bank of England Museum Threadneedle St,London, EC2R 8AH Tel: 020 7601 5545 Big bus tour london 110 Buckingham Palace Road London Tel:020 7808 6753

Liverpool has become a European destination with a rich and diverse heritage. Liverpool has long played a leading role in the formation of the world's popular music culture. And it's a part that now goes way beyond the groundbreaking days of the 1960s. Tyne and Wear Tyne and Wear offers a variety of experiences for the group visitor, where dynamic city life meets culture, countryside, and coastline. Known for its Roman, Industrial, Maritime and Christian heritage, the region is home to many fascinating cultural and historical attractions. It is an area of extraordinary contrasts from an oasis of calm amongst the ruins of a monastery to all the fun of the fair in a traditional seaside resort. In fashioning its vibrant present, South Tyneside respectfully acknowledges its historic past. Its heritage has been beautifully preserved on the banks of the Tyne at Bede's World and stunningly recreated at Arbeia Roman Fort, whilst the wonderful coastline promises fun for all the family.
